Enthusiasm!Enthusiasm is the word I think that best describes the 2016 BigR/RematecUSA Show attendee’s and exhibitors. What really excited me this year was the number of exhibitors selling equipment and product right off of their booth. I watched the Armex guys sell an ultrasonic washer on the first day, and hey, it was a great deal! Our headliner, Bogi Lateiner, from the All Girls Garage had a great and interesting presentation as well as Mike Rayne our breakfast speaker on Sunday.

I am sure you have heard or read by now that Prof. Rolf Steinhilper of Bayreuth University in Germany won the prestigous Remanufacturer of the Year Award. I have had the pleasure of visiting Rolf at the University and have been very impressed by the facility dedicated to remanufacturing and the curriculum he has built there. Rolf has contributed to the Remanufacturing Industry most of his life and we at APRA appreciate his dedication and passion for Reman.

As the year begins to wind down it has been an extremely busy one for the Remanufacturing Industry with various mergers and acquisitions as well as the Remanufacturing Definition being completed, APRA continues to monitor and react to challenges facing Remanufacturing and constantly aim to protect our members, our most important asset!

ISO Specification on Remanufacturing of Mechanical Products ISO TSP 239.

On October 12, 2016, an initiative for a new field of ISO remanufacturing technical activity was put to a vote. The initiative was defeated.

APRA actively worked to defeat the initiative. APRA believed that the proposal would undermine the association’s stance that each remanufacturer should be able to compete openly and freely based on the merits of its products and services, and the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations.

The original proposal was developed by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) which is the Chinese member body to the International Organization of Standardization (ISO). The US member body to ISO is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) gathered comments from interested parties, including APRA.

According to the original ANSI press release, the technical activity would focus on work related to standardization involving the remanufacturing of mechanical products, including basic standards, terminology, general technical requirements, and related specifications, and the evaluation of existing remanufacturing standards, among other work. While some standards related to the remanufacturing of mechanical products have been developed by ISO and by standards developing organizations based in some of its member nations, ISO does not currently have a dedicated group focused on the activity. Most small rebuilders have accepted the inevitable erosion of certain segments of our supply market, thus the quest for finding specialty drives, armatures,

stators and rotors continues to be a challenge. Gone are the days when there were dozens of armature and stator rewinding companies across the country. They met the needs of the rebuilding industry, from the smallest to the largest operation. When any one of them remains, like Van Bergen & Greener for example, it is a very big exception to the norm.

Currently we have begun using the services of a company that goes by the name of Drive Doctor. It is a division of Standard Starter Drive, Inc., run under the watchful eye of industry veteran Mike Tweed. He has years of experience in product engineering for Accurate Parts.

Drive Doctor has established a quick turnaround service for drives, which is very helpful. The starter drives which they receive are rebuilt the very same day and are returned immediately. This quick turnaround comes in very handy when a starter needs to be rebuilt quickly, and the drive is not readily available or is too far away to be practical. All of this is done at a very reasonable price, and we can justify the shipping cost, because these drives usually go into pricier units for special industrial or ag machinery, instead of common automotive and light truck applications.

Figure-1 shows a pricey Iskra/Mahle MSX242 (16.911.597) starter drive they rebuilt for us at less than one third of the price of a new one. It fit and worked perfectly fine.

There are some other companies like: International Winding Inc. (Villa Park, IL—Chicagoland), C.C. Battery (Corpus Christie, TX), Zorko’s (Home, PA), and Western Motors Inc. (Rockford, IL). There are also others companies who, through their special niches, can provide necessary parts for rebuilders who encounter odd units. These companies need to be supported by all of us in order to keep them going,

otherwise the alternatives for the industry would be bleak. My list of such companies is by no means complete, and I am sure I have missed a few. But supporting them (even at a slightly higher cost at times) is essential to our own survival. We need them to be in business for us to stay in business!

Battery Draw and GPSExcessive parasitic drain can cause the occasional dead battery and finally force a customer to fix his car. This type of drain can have many different causes. Tracing and repairing some of

them can be challenging and can even be interesting. We had this 2000 Dodge Stratus, which came to us with just such a problem. Thorough testing of the charging system showed it to be fine, and the new battery also tested fine after a deep-cycle

charge. The battery was run completely flat when the car sat idle for a week while the owner was away.

The measured and stabilized parasitic draw was 180mA, a figure which certainly indicates a problem. Today’s cars have a high initial draw after the immediate engine shut-down, and it takes a while for various

modules to time-out and go into sleep mode. There are times and cases that for various reasons, a module (or modules) would not go into sleep mode. This would cause excessive draw.

For example, a deteriorated door jamb switch, under certain temperature or humidity conditions, may signal the BCM (Body Control Module) of an open-door status. Thus, the BCM may turn the interior lights on or activate certain internal circuits which may keep it awake! An amount of 180mA was far above the norm for the aforementioned vehicle and needed to be looked into.

After another set of inspections, and before measuring amp-draw from each of the fuses (to see which one could be conducting the excessive draw), it became necessary to inspect the car for any additional add-ons (i.e. audio, alarm,

or remote start). It was then that we discovered … wired in behind the headlight switch cavity … a hidden GPS module, that continuously reported the position of the car. This was unbeknownst to the driver. (Figure-2)

Some lending institutions, which arrange financing through a used car dealer, require such a device to be installed. In fact, we have done many such installations. If the terms of payment are not met, the financing dealer can locate the car and regain possession of the vehicle by contacting a vehicle recovery agency and providing them with the car’s location. Some such devices, like the one in our case, have the ability to remotely disable the starting system so the vehicle would not be able to move again.

The module itself draws about 40-45mA, which is manageable. But as the vehicle ages, and its own parasitic draw increases, the additional 45mA can tip the scale and cause a battery rundown problem when the car sits for a few days. In our case, the GPS module had failed and was drawing a lot more than its specs.

I am not certain of the legal details, but I asked the customer if this vehicle had been purchased or financed recently. She said no. So the GPS was removed, and the car was wired to its original condition. The parasitic draw dropped to a minimal amount of 8mA, which was fine. Figure-3 shows the failed module and its associated wiring.

Fire Hazard…Bean Dust…!One of the issues that our farming customers encounter

each year—one which puts pressure on rebuilders who handle their alternators—is the possibility of fire … mostly in combines.

The amount of bean dust or corn dust trapped in the alternator prevents proper cooling. The excessive heat can eventually destroy the rectifier and the stator, making very suitable conditions for combustion. The slightest spark can ignite dust and engulf the machine in flames.

Combine fires are not isolated incidents. The chances of fires happening with today’s larger alternators are more often than you would expect. Figure-4 shows a dust-saturated stator from a Gleaner combine. The melted insulator sheet behind the connector indicates that the possibility of a serious fire perhaps was not too far away.

There is not much that can be done for any piece of machinery that works in such a dusty environment … except blowing the dirt off with compressed air at the end of a workday and hoping for the best. So, a fully charged battery, a properly-sized alternator and frequent clearing away of debris will go a long way toward preventing a disaster.

Well … that is all for this issue. Until I see you again, keep up the good work! n

The Ford Motor Company, as we know it today,

began in 1903. Several models were tried in the first few years until the famous, reliable, simple to operate and affordable Model T was introduced late in 1908.

For 19 years Ford produced the Model T in numbers of about 15 million. One of those 1911 Model T Ford Touring Cars eventually ended up in the hands of a Model T aficionado. Nearby lived a young boy who was infatuated with the old Ford.

That young boy, Kevin Shields, now of Rockledge, Florida, recalls that his mentor would only let him polish the painted parts of the car. The brass parts were off limits.

As the years went by young Shields grew to be a man and became well acquainted with the 1911 Model T Ford. He learned that the front tires were 30x3-inch models with NONSKID lettering providing the tread pattern.

Because only the rear wheels were equipped with brakes the rear tires were wider. Those wheels were 30.3.5 inches wide. Both front and rear tires are mounted on the red, 12-spoke wooden wheels.

The 102-year-old Ford delivers 20 horsepower complements of a single barrel Holley side-draft carburetor. The carburetor can be adjusted via a lever on the dashboard.

There are no brake lights but the taillight and the cowl lights are really just kerosene lanterns. The headlights, however, are illuminated via carbide acetylene gas provided from a brass canister mounted on the left running board.

Four brass spokes secure the wooden steering wheel to the steering column which also is where the spark advance and hand throttle are located.

As a youth Shields remembers riding in the passenger seat of the 1911 Model T in 1964 with its distinctive squeeze-bulb horn.

Now, all these years later, after his mentor’s death, Shields was able in 1990 to quire the old Ford. Because of where it was parked, he says, there was no paint on the right side of the vehicle. Shields then began what turned into a three-year restoration project.

The early Model T Fords had no front doors but this one is equipped with four side curtains. The flap with the back plastic window can be rolled up. The two-piece at glass windshield in a brass frame has no wipers.

Three foot pedals to make the Model T function are from the left: Clutch – Reverse – Brake.

In an emergency if you want to stop fast, step on all three pedals at once.

As Shields was restoring the Model T that he used to ride in as a child, he had the seats reupholstered in Greer, S.C.

The white pinstriping that contrasts with the red body work and black fenders was applied at a shop in Charlotte, N.C.

There are no rear doors on the touring car nor are there any bumpers. The gasoline gauge that Shields displays, is a wooden stick with graduated markings. Inserting the stick into the gasoline tank accurately measures the amount of fuel remaining in the tank.

This month I’m addressing thecommon complaint of intermit-

tent and erratic torque-converterclutch cycling between 45-60 mphexperienced in Dodge CumminsDiesel pickups from years 1998-2003. After 60 mph, the issueseems to go away. This has been awell-documented problem over theyears with many bulletins pub-lished from the manufacturer.

When the issue first showed it-self several years back, it seemedlike reprogramming the PCM,cleaning the battery terminals, re-moving paint from the bodyground point, and reconnectingthe wiring was the cure. As theyears went by, things began get-ting worse, and also more difficultto correct. One very popular fixwas to install a noise filter on theTPS signal wire back to the PCM,as the cause of the TCC cyclingproblem was a noisy or erratic TPSsignal. This is generally commonknowledge, and most have seengraphs and screenshots of the er-ratic TPS signal. What has alwaysbothered me is, why? Why does atruck that has worked fine foryears all of a sudden need a noisefilter installed to make the trans-mission work properly, as de-signed?

My recent experience involved aconstruction worker’s truck, specifically a 2001 Dodge 2500Cummins diesel. A wholesale cus-tomer that specializes in diesel en-

gines had been working on this ve-hicle, attempting to diagnose thecause of the TCC cycling in andout. I started my diagnosis withthe usual procedure: connectingthe scanner, checking out the fluid, and going for a road test to con-firm the problem. Sure enough, theTCC was cycling in and out, so Itook a quick screenshot of the scantool data (Figure 1) and, as shownin the screenshot, the TCC is actu-ally being commanded by the PCMto go in and out, and the transmis-sion is responding as commanded.

I took the truck back into theshop to check the battery for corro-sion and inspect the body grounds.Everything was clean, and it ap-peared that someone had just doneexactly what I was going to do. Tobe sure, I did it again because, up

to this point, that fix had beenworking. Despite my efforts, nodice.

Well (as I scratch my head),what now?

I went to the checklist and start-ed with a charging system testwith the Midtronics ESP-1000tester (this is the higher-end testerfrom Midtronics that we havefound to be really reliable and ac-curate). Sure enough, the alterna-tor had excessive ripple of over750MV. Seeing this, I unbolted thealternator V+ wire, and took thetruck out for a drive. It didn’t actup at all. It appeared that the ex-cessive electrical noise from the al-ternator was causing the issue, sowe sold and installed a new alter-nator, drove it some more, and stillhad no problems. It was workinggreat. We handed the customerback his keys, and off he went.

This is where that “intermittent”word starts biting me in the you-know-what. Two days later thecustomer is back with the sameproblem, and he isn’t a very happycustomer at this point. My manag-er showed him the old printout ofthe charging system, showing himwhat we saw, and why he neededan alternator. We took him out tothe shop, tested his vehicle again, and compared the two sheets for

him to see whatwe were talkingabout. He agreedwith us therewas a problemthere with the al-ternator, but, since it is stillhappening, thereis something elsegoing on there. We told the cus-tomer that wewere going toneed more timewith the truck. He said it is hiswork truck, andwithout the truckhe can’t makemoney. Weagreed that onthe next rainyday, he woulddrop it off withus. A few dayslater, it was backat the shop fortesting.

Back to mychecklist.

The systemhad no codes init, the PCM wasup to date, APPreadings weregood, throttlelinkage workinggreat with noplay in it, andthe engine wasrunning good. Ithought to my-self, “Am I goingto have to install a noise filter onthis truck?” I did not want to, butif I did not find something causingit, I might have to.

I reviewed wiring diagramslooking for anything that mightstand out, and I noticed that thereare two PCM grounds at the mainbattery ground (Figure 2). Two

grounds connect at S126 and endup at G115 on the passenger sideof the battery cable. As I am look-ing at the battery, I noticed twoconnectors on the passenger siderear of the battery. You can see oneconnector is hiding behind the bat-tery case (Figure 3). See a close-upof the connector (Figure 4).

I proceeded to do a voltage-drop test again, and for the thirdtime I really didn’t see anythingthat raised a red flag regardingpoor grounds. Across the twospade connectors referenced inFigure 3, there was only a smallamount of voltage drop, so Ipulled these connectors apart look-

ing for corrosion or anything elsethat could be wrong. I found noproblems there, so I put a little di-electric grease on them andplugged them back in. At thispoint I was desperate to find thereal issue, so I decide to eliminatethese connections entirely. We usea hydraulic battery terminalcrimper to repair cable ends, so Igot a couple of 4-gauge solderlessbutt connectors and cut the wireson each end of the spade, thencrimped them and sealed themwith shrink tube (Figure 5).

After completing this work, there was virtually no voltagedrop. Off for another road test Ihave a pretty good feel for thistruck by now and have been ableto get it in the right situations forthe problem to duplicate fairlyconsistently. This time everythingseems to be working as designed, but I wanted to have more timewith it to verify the fix 100%, butthe owner is up in the office to pickup the truck when I got back, working or not. He drives off andsays he will bring it back on anoth-er rainy day.

One week goes by, and we don’tsee him. A second week goes backand still nothing. So by this point,I’ve kind of forgotten about thetruck getting back into our dailywork routine. A couple of monthslater, another Dodge shows upwith the same problem. At thispoint I got to wondering what hap-pened to the other one we had thisproblem with. I had the managerlook up the paperwork for thatcustomer, to give him a call andsee how that truck is doing. Hesays it is doing great, and hasn’thad that problem since. Awesome!

With the truck I was now facing

with the same problem, I figured Iwould eliminate these connectorsjust to see what would happen.Once completed, I rechecked it andthe problem was gone.

There is a lot of talk about noisefilters, and Identifix has 27-plusfixes using noise filters. What I’dfound is that in lieu of installing anoise filter, eliminate these connec-tors and make sure there is almostno voltage drop in this side of thecircuit. If you compare the snap-shot shown in Figure 6 after the re-pair, versus before the repair asshown in Figure 1, you can see thatthe TPS voltage is a lot smootherand the TCC problem is gone.

There is one spike on the TCCwhen it goes into fourth gear, butthat is normal and how it is de-signed to work. Since the firsttruck that was repaired in thisfashion, I have performed this re-pair on more than 20 trucks and ineach case, never seen a comeback

Is Non-DestructiveCleaning Critical?

Pantone2758 C

ARMEX Is The Only ChoiceWhen cleaning parts that cannot have the specifications or surface tolerances change, the only blasting abrasive to use is ARMEX. Other hard blasting abrasives can remove surface materials from parts damaging threads and changing the specifications along with surface tolerances rendering the parts unusable.

The gentle physical propriety of baking soda but yet aggressive cleaning ability is what makes ARMEX the only choice. ARMEX is also environmentally-friendly and soluble. Meaning blasting particles will dissolve in either water or oil. ARMEX will never leave blasting particles behind in critical passageways like other hard blasting abrasives which can increases the risk of parts failure when placed back into service.

Use ARMEX to clean, degrease and remove burnt on carbon and paint on a wide variety of materials including steel, aluminum, lead, alloys, plastics, rubber and composites.

Globally aligned Industry definition for Automotive

Remanufacturing.A major milestone in raising the profile and awareness

of the Automotive Remanufacturing Industry.By Peter Bartel

2009, in one of my very early APRA European board meetings we discussed how APRA could best support the development of the remanufacturing

industry whilst taking into account the lack of awareness of our industry within European Governments, political circles and especially the political decision makers. Around this time the NDRC had started with the first round of licenses for Reman in China and we were also hearing about the growth of Automotive remanufacturing in Latin America.

The outcome of this meeting was a commitment to raise the profile of remanufacturing in Europe and to promote the commercial, social and ecological benefits of our industry.

The initial challenge was to address the inconsistencies with definitions and wording used in publications that existed within our industry. We recognized the need to have a common definition so that our message was clear when we were seeking support. With many different products and a variety of stakeholders from industry, foundations and associations, this was no easy task especially when the global remanufacturing footprint was also rapidly expanding.

In this context, achieving a common definition for Automotive Remanufacturing, which has been underwritten by APRA (automotive parts remanufacturing industry worldwide), FIRM (engine remanufacturing industry in Europe), CLEPA (European automotive parts suppliers), MERA (large automotive remanufacturing industry in USA), CPRA (automotive remanufacturing industry in China) and ANRAP (Brazilian automotive remanufacturing industry) and published on 13th September 2016, is a historic event and a solid foundation for the future of our industry.

Further details: www.apra-europe.orgToday Automotive Remanufacturing is now recognized

and on the political agenda of the decision makers in government, it is also regarded as the catalyst for further development of the entire remanufacturing industry. We have to maintain our profile over the forthcoming years and seek to align our definition with remanufacturers from the non-automotive industries.

We are grateful for your continued support in our quest. n

In memory of the late Richard Vensel, the Electrical Rebuilder’s Association will extend member pricing for ERA Expo 2017 to all members of the Automotive Parts

Remanufacturers Association. The event will be held in Dearborn, Michigan April 7-9, 2017.

Richard Vensel was an active member and strong supporter of both organizations throughout his working life. A wish that he expressed often was for both associations to work closely together toward the common goals that they both shared. He strongly believed that the entire rebuilding industry would benefit greatly from increased cooperation between the two associations. If he ever had your ear, you have probably heard this heartfelt desire on this matter.

“Sadly he passed away too soon to see it happen”, said ERA President Mike Dietrich when announcing the discount. “We would like to invite APRA members to join us in Dearborn next April, and we offer them our own member discount if they choose to come.”

“Richard Vensel was a Charter Member, Advisory Board Member and Honorary Member of the ERA,” stated ERA Executive Vice President Ken Plourde when he proposed the discount. “He was instrumental in bringing our organization to where it is today. This gesture of goodwill is, in my opinion, the best way that we can honor his contribution to both organizations.”

ERA Expo 2017 will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Dearborn.

Scheduled events include:• Exhibition hours on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.• Seminars by Mohammad Samii, Dan Marinucci,

Tim Weyandt and Bill Bowman.• A tour of Ford’s Rouge River plant on Friday morning.• A vendor sponsored reception prior to the show’s floor

opening on Friday afternoon.• Luncheon buffets on both Friday and Saturday.• Sunday morning breakfast followed by the ERA’s annual

meeting.

In the spirit of cooperation, APRA will offer member pricing to ERA members who register as attendees to the International Big R Show that will be held in Las Vegas, October 28-30, 2017.

APRA Association Manager Scott Parker stated, “As our industry continues to develop, it is critical that industry participants work together. By doing so, we can all work together to help grow and protect the entire remanufacturing industry.” n

Beyond Theory – The Passion that Built a Career

Steinhilper Honored as the 2016 Remanufacturer of the Year

By Fernand J. Weiland

R E M A N U F A C T U R E R O F T H E Y E A R

Professor Rolf Steinhilper is without a doubt one of the top global academic leaders

in remanufacturing today. Since 2001, Professor Steinhilper has been instrumental in the advancement of remanufacturing research at the University Institute on Manufacturing & Remanufacturing and the Fraunhofer Initiative on Process Innovation. “Rolf ’s work has contributed significantly to the international reputation of remanufacturing in the political, industrial and academic world,” said Fernand Weiland, former APRA Europe Chairman.

Rolf Steinhilper was recently honored during a ceremony at the 2016 Big R – ReMaTec Show in Las Vegas with the prestigious ReMaTec News Award for his outstanding achievements in the field of remanufacturing. “This award,” Steinhilper said, “represents the peak of my career in remanufacturing, which started back in 1982 when I was a young engineer asked to speak at a pioneering conference at the world famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology

(MIT). I was the only participant from Europe invited to make

a presentation on design for remanufacturing. My talk was

entitled ‘Remanufacturing - Remaking the Future’.”

During his long career in remanufacturing, Rolf Steinhilper has brought together many teams of expert engineers who have provided R&D support

to the manufacturing and remanufacturing industries

in Europe and worldwide. These hand-selected teams

not only worked on projects for the Institutes, but later joined

the remanufacturing industry and contributed to elevate remanufacturing to

even higher levels. “Rolf has allowed the reman industry to share his relevant R&D progress,” said Carsten Bücker, Chairman of APRA Europe, who has worked on several projects with Rolf ’s Institutes.

Rolf and his engineers have built successful laboratories filled with state-of-the-art equipment. The main processes which they have developed are disassembly, cleaning, diagnosis & testing, machining and last, but not least, reassembling.

ISSUE 11 | REMAN CONNEC TION 19

Rolf recently told Fernand Weiland, “I think of remanufacturing as the enabling technology that will bring us to a future of renewable manufacturing and consumption patterns. Renewable power generation like solar and wind energy are booming, and remanufacturing deserves the same attention! That’s why I love and support it with such a passion.”

As a young man Rolf repaired his father’s car. Now he owns his own garage filled with more than two dozen classic cars — SIMCA/Chryslers, Citroens, Jaguars — model years 1969-79. Some he has already remanufactured, others are waiting to be renovated.

In 1987 Rolf delivered Stuttgart University’s first PhD thesis on remanufacturing and received the Doctor of Engineering title for his work, “Remanufacturing of Mechanical Engineering Products.” Rolf said of this time, “It was an important step, not just for my reman career, but for remanufacturing itself. The scientific community became aware of the importance of remanufacturing and then other European universities started to support it with R&D activities.”

Then in 1993 Rolf was awarded a European Environmental Prize, presented by the industry for “Developing Comprehensive Concepts for Product Recycling and Remanufacturing.”

During the 10-year period between 2006-2016, Rolf initiated six major remanufacturing R&D project consortia with industrial remanufacturing players, all which were supported by the European Union in Brussels — SIRO, eCleaner, Minimise, ResCom, and ERN (European Remanufacturing Network). Working with industry has always been high on Rolf and his team’s agenda. He believes that academia should remain independent and never take part in activities like lobbying, however, due to the high positive impact on the environment he strongly feels that the remanufacturing industry deserves academia’s full support.

Rolf Steinhilper is not only a man of research and development. His passion leads him to share his knowledge with the world, which is precisely what drove him to be a founding member of APRA Europe in 1990 and become a regular exhibitor with his team at the ReMaTec Exhibition in Amsterdam. Always looking to the future, in 2012 Rolf launched the first “World Remanufacturing Summit,” which was followed by the summits in 2013 in Shanghai, 2014 in Rochester, 2015 in Amsterdam, 2016 in Beijing and soon in 2017 in Singapore.

Congratulations to Rolf Steinhilper upon receiving this most distinguished and deserved award. His academic contributions and social responsibility continue to advance the case for remanufacturing around the world. n
