ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT OF THE IQAC
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi applied for re-accreditation by NAAC
in the month of July 2009 and peer team visited the college on 21st – 23rd Jan 2010. The
NAAC has awarded B Grade on 4 point scale to the college in the month of March 2010.
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell was re-constituted as per the revised
guidelines for the preparation of the Report for the year 2010-11.

PART – A
The plan of action chalked out by IQAC in the beginning of the yeartowards quality enhancement:
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College got reaccredited with B grade on 4 point
scale in 2010 by NAAC Accreditation Board. According to the Peer team – “Mahatma
Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi conveys an optimistic message of how a growth
oriented educational Institution can bring about rapid transformation of an extremely
backward rural area through a dynamic process of education and cultural activities ……
cherishing and cultivating a chain of academic institutions of different hues, but serving
the basic cause of educating minds, is indeed rare among Indian Affiliated Colleges”.
The Vision & Mission statements of the college and the encouraging words of
Peer team have made the IQAC members of the college to chalk-out a detailed plan of
action for the academic year under report.
IQAC requested teachers to increase their participation in various forums, which
directly or indirectly involve in the designing and updating of the curriculum. As far as
the student support and progression is concerned, besides strengthening Parent Teacher
Association and Alumni Association, IQAC felt that students should be made employable
through career counseling and placement assistance. Likewise it was decided to improve
the organization by obtaining student feedback regarding the teaching staff of the college.
IQAC decided to take following steps for the quality enhancement among students:
Conducting periodical tests, seminars for the Students.
Taking Students to the Industries to have interaction.
Arranging students’ visit to the Courts, Zilla Panchayat and other Local
Government offices.

To arrange remedial courses to the needy students.
Conducting study tours to the students.
To arrange career workshops to expose the students for career opportunities.
To organize workshops to enable the students to face interview and participate in
the group discussions.
To organize quiz programmes for the improvement of General knowledge of
students.
To organize special coaching camps for various sports and games.
To motivate students to participate in workshops / seminars in other colleges.
For quality enhancement of teachers, IQAC decided to encourage the teachers....
To participate in Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.
To present papers in Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.
To conduct minor/major research projects with the help of ICSSR, UGC, NAAC
and other Agencies.
To publish articles in Journals and Newspapers.
To participate in Orientation Programmes and Refresher Courses.
To write and publish text books.
Achievements by the end of the year:
Students’ quality enhancement:The IQAC has noted that the subject Seminars, Quiz, Industrial Visit have been
carried out in the year by many Departments. The IQAC has noted that HRD
programmes and many other programmes by different Departments have been organized
to enable the students to acquire more general knowledge and skill. IQAC is happy to
observe that the remedial courses have been conducted by the faculty to the needy
students. IQAC has also noted that special encouragement has been given to talented
students of NCC, NSS and Sports men and women during the year.

NCC, NSS, Sports etc., are mentioned in respective places of PART – B of the report.
Teachers’ quality enhancement:
The IQAC has observed that many faculty members have attended / presented
papers in various Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.
Six staff members have attended Refresher courses & three staff members have
attended Orientation Courses held at different places during the year of report.

PART – B
1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution:
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi was established in 1949 by lateDr.T.M.A. Pai. It is sponsored by the Academy of General Education, Manipal and isaffiliated to Mangalore University. The college campus houses two Auditoriums –Nutana Ravindra Mantapa & Muddanna Mantapa (Open Air Auditorium), RashtrakaviGovinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra, Regional Resource Centre for Folk performing arts,well catalogued RRC archives, Yakshagana Kendra, well equipped Computer Centre, anextensive A.L.N.Rao playground and a Library with a difference – Granthaloka.
The college is a premier Institution with rich legacy in terms of facilities,equipments, staff and achievements. For six decades, the college has served as the focalpoint in all-round development of students of Udupi region.
The college offers B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.C.A., PGDCA, and part-time courses inGerman to the students irrespective of castes, communities, class, religion and place ofbirth. The college provides free Mid-day meals to the needy students. The managementhas taken lot of efforts to support and encourage sports and extra-curricular activities likeMusic, NCC, NSS, Rangers, Youth Red Cross etc. The college has also organizedremedial courses to the slow learners. The college is providing number of scholarshipsand free ships to the meritorious students.
2. New Academic Programmes initiated:
English, History and Economics as optional subjects in BA stream has beenrevived during this academic year.
UGC sponsored career oriented course namely Networking with Netsim wasalso introduced this academic year.
The Computer Department conducts certificate courses during lunch hours andvacations for the benefit of the students. The Department has also organized free Internetclasses for students and staff.

Many faculty members have contributed in re-designing of various coursematerials by working as the members of the Board of Studies of Mangalore Universityand a few autonomous colleges

21. Improvement in the Library Services:
The MGM College houses a state of the art library. It caters to the needs of thenearly 2600 borrowers and will be open from 8.30am 6 pm. It is one of the biggestlibraries among the affiliated college libraries of Mangalore University. Theimplementation of automation facilities has created user friendly atmosphere and hasbeen appreciated by the students. It also serves the public as well as KSOU students. Ason today, our library collection has 89,991 books, 99 periodicals and 11 dailies.
This year we have provided Del-net service, inflibnet, nlist -resources. The libraryhas 75 thousand e-books and nearly 2500 e-journals on different subjects.
Bar coding system has been completed in the library in this academic year. CCTVhas been installed in the library at a cost of 90,000/-
In order to familiarize the library for new comers, ‘know your library’ programmewas conducted in the beginning of the year. The Library is computerized and Internetfacility is extended to the students. Students can take printout of the downloadedmaterials. The CD writing facility is also given to students. The library is also equippedwith a Xerox Machine.

The Students’ feed back is taken from all the students in all the courses for all theteachers. Overall feedback is good on all the teachers. The Principal is monitoring theperformance of all staff members regularly.

25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions andexamination results, issue of certificates:
All members of the office staff are undergoing training in order to Computerizethe office work.
26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:
The Ladies Hostel is going to be expanded at a cost of Rs 70 lakh from the UGCgiven under the XI Plan and with a matching grant of Rs 70 lakh from the management.The foundation stone was laid by Sri T Mohandas Pai, the President of the Trust on23rd Jan 2011.
The work of ‘Vajrasoudha’, the Diamond Jubilee commemorative building isunder progress and the construction will be completed by Dec 2011. The estimate for thebuilding is Rs 5 crore.
Chairs with writing pads have been purchased worth of nearly 2 lakhs.
27. Technology Upgradation:
All the Departments of the college are provided with a computer. Somedepartments are also provided with a printer and CD writer.
28. Computer and Internet access and training to Teachers and Students:
The Students and Teachers are getting trained to use computer and they can enroll(Both full time and part-time) as the students of Diploma course in Computer Science.Internet facility is available in the college library and college office.
29. Financial Aid to Students:
Apart from the Government Freeships and Scholarships, the college offers 132endowment and scholarship prizes to the meritorious and deserving students. The detailsof various Government scholarships given to the students apart fromendowment/scholarship are enclosed in Annexure – 7.

30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:
Apart from spreading goodwill, the Association is encouraging the students bygiving a few Scholarships and Endowments.

31. Activities and Support from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA):
Apart from spreading goodwill, the Association is encouraging the students bygiving a few Scholarships, Endowments and donation to Mid-day Meals’ fund. TheAssociation honoured the rank holders, who brought laurels to the college in the previousUniversity Examinations 2010. Retired staff member was also honoured during theCollege Day Celebrations.

The College is continuously encouraging students to participate in Sports andGames. Many of our students have actively participated in various sports and games meetat University level and State-level.

Encouragement is given, by providing tracksuits and refreshments to the studentsduring the time of rehearsals and coaching camps. Freeship has been given to the specialSportsman.

Guidance and counseling unit is functioning under the leadership of Prof.Yashawanthi Salian, Dept of commerce and Prof. Sandhya Nambiar, Dept of English.
37. Placement Services provided to students:
The Placement Cell has put Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College on the map ofCampus recruitment. The cell under the guidance of Mr Vishwanath Pai, HOD ofComputer Science has facilitated several placement drives and motivated many studentsto be career oriented even before they get their degrees. The cell has conducted freetraining classes for the students to face the aptitude test & Interview. This year we havedone ‘POOLED CAMPUS DRIVE’ wherein, many students of the nearby colleges likeSri Bhuvanendra College-Karkala, Poorna Prajna College & Govt. College for women-Udupi, Vijaya College-Mulky, Bhandarkars College-Kundapur and SMS college-Bramhavara and many other nearby colleges were also benefited.
The prominent companies who visited our campus were Wipro Technologies,iGate Global Solutions, Wipro BPO, Infosys BPO, Balaji Telefilms etc. We are happy tostate that more than 70 students have been selected by different companies.

Community Services rendered:
NCC Naval wing:
The Naval NCC Sub Unit in MGM College entered 16th year of function after histimely Rejuvenation in 1995-1996. Our NCC Naval sub Unit is affiliated to 6 KAR NavalUnit, NCC Udupi. Lt. Dr S.R.Shet is working as ANO of the NCC unit of the college.
This year our cadets actively participated in tree plantation in the month Aug,Boat Pulling during September – October and donated Blood on variousoccasions for a number of patients in need.
On 15th August 2010 our college sub unit presented impressive March Past & theGuard of honour to the Chief Guest, Principal Dr. P V Gowda in the college andalso attended the Independence day Parade at Ajjarkad.
On January 26th 2011, our cadets presented most impressive march past and theGuard of honour to the chief guest Principal Dr. P V Gowda in the college andattended Republic day parade at Ajjarakad & got First place in March pastcompetition.
Our cadets participated in the rally, held in connection with the commonwealthBaton held in Udupi city on 6th Sept 2010.
A few cadets attended the Legal & Literacy workshop held in Udupi court on30th and 31st Oct 2010.
Our cadets participated in the Pulse polio camp held in the month of Sept 2010.
NCC Army Wing:
The N.C.C. Army wing of the college is sub-unit of 21 Kar BN N.C.C. Udupi. Ithas stepped into 11th year of functioning. It is working under the guidance ofSmt. Jyothi Nayak, Lecturer, Dept of Mathematics.
All the cadets of NCC Army wing have participated in all the community servicesrendered by the NCC naval unit.

N.S.S. programme for the academic year was inaugurated with the celebration ofVanamhahotsav on 15th Aug 2010, the Independence day.
An Orientation Progrmme for the N.S.S. volunteers was conducted on 4th Sept2010. Mr. Laxminarayana Karanth, Dept of Economics was the Resource person.
On 18th Sept 2010 eight volunteers of our college participated in the LegalAwareness Workshop organized by the National Law Authority in BhavaniMantapa, Janardhana Mahakali Temple, Ambalpady.
Mr.Vinay of JCI, Udupi city conducted a Leadership Training Programme for theNSS Volunteers on 18th Sept 2010.
Five volunteers participated in the Legal Awareness Seminar organized by theDistrict Court, Udupi, in the MIT Auditorium on 30th October, 2010.
A trekking expedition to Koosally for the volunteers was conducted on 26th Feb.2011. 32 students were accompanied by six staff members.
On 22nd March, 2011 an AIDS awareness programme was organized andSignature campaign programme, in association with the District AIDS PreventionSociety.
Kasturba Rangers Unit:
Kasturba Rangers Unit of the College is functioning under the able leadership ofSmt. Vasumathi Bhat, Dept of Sanskrit & Smt. Vanitha, Dept of commerce as RangerLeaders.
The Kasturba Rangers Unit activities were inaugurated on 8th Sept2010 by Mrs.Shantha V. Acharya, Karnataka state Commissioner for guides.
On 15th of October, 2010, a demonstration on embroidery was conducted bySmt. Jayashree Nayak.
The rangers participated in the procession which took place on the occasion of80th birthday of his holiness Sri. Pejavara Swamiji.

The details of the healthy practices of the Institution are as follows:
The members of the staff submit self appraisal report every year to themanagement and the Joint Director of Collegiate Education. The confidentialreports of The Principal submitted to the management help to maintain therequired standard and discipline.
The Principal and the heads of the Departments will monitor the work done bythe Staff members written in ‘Work Diary’.
The academic performance of the students is checked by adopting thefollowing mechanism:
The Staff members will play the role of Academic Advisors of thestudents. The students of each class are divided into small groups of twentyor twenty five. The over all academic performance, character, discipline andparticipation in co-curricular activities of these groups are supervised by theconcerned Academic Advisors. The cumulative record is the documentmaintained by the Academic Advisor. This document is signed by theAcademic Advisors and forwarded to Parents/Guardian/Warden to appraisethem of the students’ performance.
Two tests are conducted to equip the students for the University SemesterExaminations and also for the calculation of Internal Assessment marks.Proficiency prizes are awarded on the basis of these examinations and thishelps the students to perform better in Final Examinations.
Parent – Teacher meet is organized twice a year in order to provide an openplatform for free and healthy interaction.
The Staff Council consisting of Heads of Departments helps the Principal totake decisions regarding academic matters, examinations, co-curricularactivities etc.
The HRD and TQM Cell conduct Personality Development Programmes onevery Saturday afternoons. The other programmes conducted includes PublicSpeaking courses, confidence building exercises, mind skill exercises andleadership development programmes.

Vadiraja Vidyarthini Nilaya – Ladies Hostel:
We have 181 inmates in the Ladies Hostel. From time to time variousprogrammes and talks have been held in this academic year for the all roundpersonality development of the students. Yoga classes were held every day. Theinmates have been very active participants in the various co-curricular activitiesof the college.
Mid-day Meals scheme:
The Mid-day Meals Club of the College has been providing free meals to theunder privileged students of the college. We are happy to acknowledge thevoluntary contribution made by various donors towards the Mid-day Meals’ Fund.This year 140 students have been the beneficiaries of this scheme.

MG.M. College Students’ Co-operative Stores:
The Co-operative store of the college provides books and stationery to thestudents at reasonable rates. Dr. P V Gowda as the Honorary president,Dr. N Hala Naik as the Honorary Secretary with the support of the Directors fromamong the teachers and student representatives has ably managed the working ofthe Co-operative Stores. A certain percentage of the profits from the sales is setaside every year for the granting of scholarships to deserving students. Mr Udaya,the clerk is the in-charge of the Stores in conducting the business. The accountsof the stores are audited by the Government auditors of the Co-operativeDepartment from time to time.
Department of German:
The Department of German provides facilities for teaching German at the basicand intermediate level. In spite of several obstacles nine students of the collegehave succeed themselves to join the Basic course and a lone student is attendingthe Intermediate level course in German. At the beginning of the academic year,departmental examinations were held in which four candidates passed the Basiccertificate examination, and one candidate each passed the Junior Diploma andSenior Diploma Examination.
Students Welfare Council:
We have a promising and enthusiastic band of members in the Students WelfareCouncil. The SWC, under the guidance of Dr N Hala Naik- Student WelfareOfficer and two Chief Staff Co-coordinators namely Sri M Radhakrishna andDr. H.S. Shivaswamy, helped in conducting the various activities.
Science club:
The club is functioning under the guidance of Smt Kusuma kamath, HODPhysics.
Mr Abhiram Soori an alumnus of our college who is doing PhD in Physicsat IISc, Bangalore interacted with our III BSc students, in physics on 8th
Aug 2010.
On 3rd Sept 2010, Dr. K.V Rao- Director, Science Centre, Pilikula and DrNarasimha Bhat- CEO Manipal dot net, both alumni of MGM Collegeinteracted with the science teachers regarding setting up and developingthe science Museum in the College.
Ms. Shrilatha, who is pursuing her higher studies in Physics at NITKaddressed our BSc students and spoke on ‘THE UNIVERSE’ on 4th Sept2010.

IT club in association with the Microsoft student partners conductedseminars on modern it technologies.
Arts club:
Arts club is functioning actively under the guidance of Smt H S Jayashree, HODEconomics.
Rtd. Prof. Ramesh Kedilaya, Canara college, Mangalore inaugurated thearts club activities on 31st Aug 2010 and spoke on the importance of‘ARTS’ in life of students.
On 14th Sep 2010, elocution competition was conducted on behalf ofForum of Free enterprise Mumbai.
On 18th Sep 2010, enlightenment, empowerment of employability trainingprogramme was conducted for the arts students by Maj Radha Krishna.

It is has been conducted for the past 32 years and this is 33 year of Celebrations.Vadiraja Kanakadasa Music Festival was held from 14th to 16th Jan 2011. Eminentmusicians- Dr.Sukanya Praphakar, Ms.Kasthuri, Sri Balachandra Prabhu, SriShantheri Kamath, Sri Prashanth N R and others participated in the festival.Dance, Dramas, musical concerts, music appreciation and rendering of Dasa’ssongs are some of the highlights of this festival.
Gandhian Study Centre:
Gandhian Study Centre has the following objectives –

8 day ‘De-addiction camp’ was held in Jan 2011 at Nutana RavindraMantapa, in association with Sri Dharmasthala Rural Development Trustand Udupi De-addiction council. 44 addicted persons participated and gotbenefit from the camp.
In collaboration with Bharathiya Vikas Trust, extension lecture series wereorganized for high school students on Gandhian Principles. Eminentresource persons delivered lectures in more than 50 schools.
A portrait drawing competition on ‘Gandhi’ was organized for high schoolstudents on Gandhi Jayanthi day.
A UGC grant of Rs. 3,75, 000 has been received by the college to conductmore activities under this Gandhi Study Centre.

In hisacceptance speech Dr Ganesh explained the close contact that has developed withthe coastal Districts of Karnataka.

Kadangodlu Award :The Annual Kadangodlu Poetry Award was presented to Smt Dr Geetha Vasanthand Smt Sukanya Kalasa at a function held under the auspices of the Kendra andKarkala Sahitya Sanga on 8th Aug 2010. Dr. Niranjan Vanalli delivered theKadangodlu Memorial Lecture on the occasion.
Publication :The Centre has taken up the reprinting of Bannanje Govindacharya’sKanakopanishat as part of the Project of Kanaka Adhayayana Peetha. Prof A VNavada represented the Kendra at a meeting convened by the Director of KanakaAbhivriddhi Foundation at Kaginele in June 2010.
Ati ParbaIt was a joint venture with the participation of Dharmasthala Rural DevelopmentCell, Udupi. This was a whole day programme. There were competitions held fornative games and a lunch was organized by sharing the varieties of food preparedby individual families.
‘Bunts in Culture and History’ :The prestigious work, after a long strenuous field work, and analysis has beencompleted. The work authored by Prof B Surendra Rao was released on 7th Nov2010 by Justice Santhosh Hedge. The first 1000 copies have been sold out and thesecond edition is on the anvil. The entire expenditure of the production and thepreparatory field work was borne by the World Bunts organizations.
Felicitation to A Ishwaraiah :The Govind Pai Samshodhana Kendra joined hands with the A IshwariahFelicitation Committee in organizing a felicitation programme for him on 5th Dec2010 on the premises of Sri Ambalpadi Temple under the patronage ofDharmadarshi Dr Vijaya Ballal.
‘Kanaka Festival in Kaginele’:The Kanaka Adhayayana Peetha, the sub-unit of Govind Pai SamshodhanaKendra extended its cooperation to the Kanaka Festival Committee of Kagineleby deputing ‘Samskriti –Bharathi’- a Bhajan troupe from Udupi to participate inthe festival.

Dr Taltaje Keshva Bhat Award :The annual Keshava Prashasthi in honour of the late Taltaje Keshava Bhat -was awarded on 24th Oct 2010 to Dr G. Venkata Subbaiah, a nonagenarianscholar specialized in dictionaries, in a special programme in Bangalore andthe Chief guest was Dr. Mallepuram G. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor,Samskrita Vishwavidyalaya.
Dr Bhaskaranand Kumar wrote and published a drama both in Tulu &Kannada- Bheeshmana Koneya Dinagalu. The Kannada Drama was selectedby the Mangalore University as a text book for the Degree students. TheMangalore University requested our Kendra to publish this play for thestudents of Degree classes and the Kendra has published the book as per theUniversity norms.

A seminar on the newly published work ‘Sirikavya Loka’ (edited by Dr AshokAlva, RRC) was held on 10th Apr 2010 under the joint auspices of Karnataka TuluAcademy, Karnataka Janapada Parishat-Udupi Unit, RRC and MGM College-Udupi. SriArya Laxminarayana Alva presided over the function. Dr Chinnappa Gowda presented apaper on the work. The PG students of Govt. College, Tenkanidiyur specially took part inthe programme. Two folk artistes, Smt A Kargi Shedthy, singer of Siri epic and Sri DoguNalike, a senior Bhoota dance Artist were honoured on the occasion.
Recording both in audio/video of Sri Babu Saheb of Kaup was undertaken onSept 2010 with the special help of Sri Manohar Kunder and Dr Raghavan Nambiar. Thefamily belonging to the Muslim Community participates in the Vadyamela at the localtemple festivals and Bhoota kolas. The head of the troupe Sri Babu Saheb knows morethan 12 types of piping and this shows his high regard for the Hindu traditions andcustoms.
A dissemination programme was held by the RRC team for the residents ofYenagudde, Katapadi, the children of the neighboring schools and the members of theNSS wings of MGM College. The screening of RRC holdings was well received by thespectators.
YAKSHAGANA KENDRA :
With a change in the pattern of offering training, the Yakshagana Kendra has adopted thepolicy of allowing students of Yakshagana to pursue formal schooling during the normalworking hours of schools and utilizing morning and evening hours for teachingYakshagana in the Kendra. It is hoped that this would give them the option of eithergoing to professional Yakshagana troupes if they so desire, or taking up otheroccupations and continuing with Yakshagana as hobby artistes. During 2010-2011, 20students have been admitted for Yakshagana training. 7 of them attend the Pre-UniversityCourse, 2 are attending a job oriented ITI Course, 8 are attending High school and two

are going to secondary schools. The expenses of their school education are met by theKendra through donations received from philanthropists. Regular sessions of Yakshaganadance training are going on in the Kendra.
The following special programmes were held during the period:
On the recommendations of Dr Mohan Alva of Moodabidre, Sri M Ramachandra Hegde,leader of the Kannadiga Society in Singapore invited the members of the YaksharangaKendra, to give performances during the Karnataka Vaibhava festival from 13th to 19th
April 2010. Three episodes Jambavati Kalyana, Hidimba Vivaha and Jatayu Mokshawere presented by members of kendra during the festival. Director of the troupe SriSanjeeva Suvarna was honoured with the title ‘Yakshakala Rathna’
From May 28 to June 1, 2010 Yaksharanga participated in the ‘5 day Theatre Workshop’held under the auspices of Shivakumar Theatre in Sanehalli, Chitradurga District. Theworkshop was inaugurated by Sri A V Prasanna, Director of NSD. His Holiness SriShivakumara Swamiji graced the occasion. Sri G K Govind Rao, Chidambara Rao Jambeand Tripurari Sharma spoke at the inaugural session. Artistes of Yaksharanga Kendrademonstrated a variety of Yakshagana dances under the Direction of Guru Sri SanjeevaSuvarna. A Yakshagana performance of Yakshothama Kalaga was presented on thestage.
The next tour of the artistes was in Mumbai from 4th to 16th June 2010. They presented 10shows under the auspices of different organizations which were co-ordinated by KannadaKala Kendra as part of ‘Yakshotsava’. They had the distinction of offering training to 25art-enthusiasts for five days and getting them to present a show at the end of the period.
In a demonstration programme that was held in the course of the 2 day PrasangaWorkshop on 3rd and 4th July 2010 at MGM College Udupi under the auspices ofYakshagana Academy, the artistes of Yakshagana Kendra gave a demonstration ofYakshagana songs and dances in new Ragas and Talas as requested by the great scholarof Yakshagana Dr. S. Narayana Shetty.
Yaksharanga had a unique opportunity to present two Yakshagana performances on theoccasion of 500th coronation Day of Krishna Deva Raya in Hyderabad held under thejoint auspices of Govt. of Andrapradesh, State Dept. of Culture and TirumalaDevasthanam. President of India Smt. Prathibha Devi Patil, Governor of AndhrapradeshSri ESL Narasimhan, Sri K Rosaiah, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr J. GeetaReddy, Minister of I & PR were among the distinguished guests.
The Kendra has brought out a critical work on Yakshagana poets and their life written byDr. Kabbinale Vasanth Bharadwaj.
A dramatic work on Bhishma’s last days written by Dr Bhaskarananda Kumar, one ofthe members of the Executive Committee of Yakshagana Kendra, has been prescribed asa text book by Mangalore University for the students of the Degree classes. As per therequest of Dr. Bhaskaranda Kumar the Kendra has taken up the publication of the2nd edition of the book.

Dr. Vasudeva Aithal, an NRI from the USA has donated a sum of Rs. 30,000/- toYakshagana Kendra to meet the expenses of the children who attend schools along withgetting comprehensive training in Yakshagana dance and music in the Kendra.
The Yaksharanga troupe of the Kendra participated in the World Festival held at Dublin,Ireland in July. The programme was sponsored by the ICCR New Delhi. Sri RameshBhat, Second Secretary of the Embassy was our old student and took special care of thetroupe and our performances were viewed by many. There was a special programme forthe media people to record and publicize the programme. It was a new experience to ourartistes to give a live show that too on the beach.
Department of Culture, New Delhi has sanctioned an additional grant for conducting aworkshop on the traditional theatres of the South Akin to Yakshagana.
The Yaksharanga was invited to participate in the Poorvottara Natya Samaroha inAssam- Ban theatre in Tejpur and Ravindranath Tagore theatre in Guwahathi. GuruSanjeeva Suvarna was recognized as one of the best theatre/art directors of the festival.Yaksharanga was highly appreciated for its team work, excellent dance, make-up andcostumes.
Guru Sri Sanjeeva Suvarna was awarded the ‘Rajyotsava Award 2010’ on 1st Nov 2010at Ravindra Kalakshethra, Bangalore.
‘Desi Utsava’ was celebrated in Feb 2011 in collaboration with RRC and folk artorganizations from Kerala.
