Our faculty in the newsGarold Minns, M.D., dean of KU School of Medicine-Wichita, was selected by the Gold Foundation as 2021 Champion of Humanistic Care. Champions were chosen for their compassion and courage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Minns was recognized virtually by the Gold Foundation last June for his essential role in managing our campuses through the ever-changing crisis.

Tiffany Schwasinger-Schmidt, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, was named a 40 Under 40 honoree! Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt is an assistant professor in our Department of Internal Medicine, neurology clerkship director and the director of our Center for Clinical Research. The 2021 40 Under 40 honorees were honored during a special event last July, with their profiles appearing in the July 30 Wichita Business Journal. In her 40 Under 40 profile in the Wichita Business Journal, Dr. Schwasinger-Schmidt shared her achievements, words to live by, community involvement and more. “I am passionate about serving the community through clinical outreach and bringing cutting edge care to Wichita and the surrounding region,” she said. “At the Center for Clinical Research at KU Wichita, we are changing the practice of medicine by advancing care and bringing cutting edge research to Kansans.”

Donna Sweet, M.D., AAHIVS, MACP, a professor of internal medicine at KU School of Medicine-Wichita and director of the KU Wichita Internal Medicine Midtown Clinic and Ryan White programs, was one of the first doctors in Kansas to provide care to HIV and AIDS patients, starting in 1983 when a Wichita native diagnosed with AIDS returned home from Philadelphia and asked who the local AIDS doctor was. Before then, Dr. Sweet had been reading up on the disease out of what she calls “academic purposes.” Forty years later, HIV/AIDS treatment and detection are better, but infection rates are still too high. Edgard Wehbe, M.D., nephrologist, volunteer facultyWhat do you enjoy most about being a volunteer faculty member?I enjoy teaching residents and medical students. I enjoy watching the residents

improving their clinical skills over the three years of internal medicine training

and the confidence they build over time.

How many years of experience do you have in your field?I have been practicing nephrology since 2012. I have been involved in teaching

students and residents for more than 10 years.

What are your interests, hobbies? Cooking, triathlon, tennis and reading.

Chaitra Gopinath, M.D., PGY 3 residentWhat drew you to a career in medicine? My earliest memories of medicine are that of my grandfather practicing as an internist

in rural India. Following him around the hospital listening to individual stories and

watching him connect with people was fascinating and drew me to choose medicine

as a career.

What do you enjoy most about residency?I enjoy that every day, every patient encounter is unique and a learning opportunity.

New challenges pop up often, but our program has amazing people and there is

always someone willing to help you navigate these challenges.

What are your interests, hobbies?  During my free time I enjoy cooking vegetarian dishes, watching Netflix, connecting

with family and friends back in India.
