EGPWS (with or without) Internal GPS

The Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) is available either with or without an internalGPS card. When the card is used, position information (ex. latitude, longitude, altitude, accuracy) is providedby the card directly to the EGPWS. A coaxial cable will be needed to interface the card to an active antennarequired on the aircraft surface; coax and antenna become part of the installation kit which is sold separately.

If an external GPS source is interfaced with the EGPWS, the internal card is not needed. If the card is in theunit, it can remain without affecting operation; position input is still taken from the external source.

A number of operators who initially purchased EGPWS without internal GPS have found they now wantinternal GPS. To this end, Honeywell has created two options:

Option 1:The standard internal GPS card available today provides data only to the EGPWS; no GPS data is outputfrom the unit. Converting an EGPWS without an internal GPS card to one with a standard GPS card involvesa modification (Part Number 011-2477-000 for MK VII and Part Number 011-2456-000 for the MKV EGPWS)and associated kit implemented by a Honeywell Service Center.

Option 2:A number of operators are interested in a card internal the EGPWS that is able to output GPS data to otheravionics as well as the EGPWS. The Mercury GPS card will provide this capability. Outputs providedexternal to the EGPWS will be two ARINC 429 channels. These two outputs will be TSO-C129a (Class C3)and ARINC 743A compliant. One output will be internally looped back to the EGPWS for use as its GPSposition source, and the other being an independent output for use by an FMS. Certification of the output'suse with other systems (such as a Flight Management System) will be the user's responsibility. The MercuryGPS is a 24-channel GNSSU with internal RAIM and FDE capability. This single channel GPS output willsupport en route, terminal, and non-precision approach navigation in accordance with TSO-C129a for ClassC3 equipment. EGPWS units cannot be upgraded to the Mercury GPS. Customers should contact Honeywellfor the current price to swap their current non-GPS unit for one with the "Mercury" GPS card.
