Page 2: Intermediate restorative material (Dentistry)

• A wide variety of direct restorative materials are placed in dentin close proximity to the pulp.• That may have adverse reaction on pulp

• A range of materials, termed intermediate restorative materials (IRMs), has been developed to be applied to the dentin prior to the placement of restorative materials.

• its applied as base and liners

The main group of materials that fall into the category of cavity bases and liners are

Varnishes :

Two of the most popular bases are Glass ionomer

Zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE)

type of sealer that seals the dentinal tubules and flows easily but evaporates quickly.

• can releases fluoride ions• bonds to enamel and dentin,• radiopaque • compatible with all dental restorative

materials.

• sedative (soothing) to the pulp• insulates the pulp from thermal forces• protects the pulp• Oil of cloves in the eugenol calming effect

on pulp.

The main group of materials that fall into the category of cavity bases and liners are

• Dental liners which provide a thin barrier that protects the pulpal tissue from irritation.

One of the most popular liners is calcium hydroxide

• Protects the pulp from chemical irritation by its sealing ability

• Stimulates the production of reparative or secondary dentin

• Compatible with all types of restorative materials.

Resin-modified glass – ionomer cements

• The advantages of using RMGI as the base or liner are:

• bonds to dentin with a chemical chelation interaction and does not require use of a dentin bonding agent before placement.• It has been shown to release fluoride ion during service with the potential

preventive effect of this chemical• It is relatively easy to use.• The very fluid flowable resin fills irregularities easily because of the

flowable characteristics.• the flowable resin color can match the tooth structure almost exactly

without causing any disagreeable final color in the restoration.

The disadvantages of RMGI used as a liner or base are:

• Final set of the material requires many hours.• On initial placement, it is not strong.• Color of the material is not as close

to tooth color as flowable resin.• Placement of the material is

somewhat more difficult than flowable resin.
