COLD OPEN

OPEN ON:

CUE CARD: FRIDAY

INT. HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Greendale has been redecorated to resemble a NASCAR track,complete with a group of STUDENTS and TEACHERS waiting aroundthe tracks edge.

A RUMBLE OF ENGINES is heard. Everyone perks up. GO-KARTSscream around the corner. JEFF and RACER XYZ lead the pack.

Racer XYZ is wearing a full tracksuit and a giant helmet:completely masking his identity.

A CRASH occurs, Go-Karts pile into each other. Jeff and RacerXYZ look back at the vehicular slaughter.

Theyre the last two racers.

They slam into each other, trying to knock the other personoff the track. Racer XYZ presses a button and spikes appearon the side of his kart ala Ben Hur .

The spikes tear up the side of Jeffs Go-Kart. Fuel begins topour out of Jeffs Go-Kart. They slam into each other again-

INT. STUDY ROOM - MORNING

JEFF, BRITTA, TROY, and ABED are all fighting sleep as PIERCEcontinues telling a long, drawn-out story.

PIERCE...which was the reason PrincessDiana faked her death to get out ofgiving me one of her kidneys. Shesaid she was never going to playanother game of Siberian solitairebut I convinced her-

Annie and Shirley enter with a tray of cupcakes.

SHIRLEYLooks like everyone can use alittle sugar-boost.

Everyone grabs one. Right as theyre about to bite in Brittastops everyone and eyes Shirley.

BRITTA (suspicious)

Did you bake these?

ANNIEDont worry, I helped.

Everyone is relieved and eats them. Pierce forgets his place.

PIERCEWhere was I at?

JEFFThe end. You were done.

PIERCE

TIGHT on everyones dramatic stares at each other. Its tenselike a Spaghetti Western. No one moves. A tumbleweed rollsby.

INT. DEAN PELTONS OFFICE - AFTERNOON

DEAN PELTON is trying on wigs in a mirror. Abed, Pierce,Britta, Troy and Shirley burst in, each speaking over theother.

Pelton is so overwhelmed he passes out. Everyone stopstalking. On Peltons desk is a SIGN UP sheet: 5th AnnualGreendale Derby. Everyone signs up and casually leaves.

INT. STUDY ROOM - AFTERNOON

Annie is putting the cupcakes away. Jeff is still sitting.

ANNIEDont you want to run off and takethe easy way out with the rest of

them?JEFF

I dont do Go-Karts anymore. Notsince...

(looks off dramatically)... that night .

ANNIEDo you want to talk about it?

JEFF(real pain)

When I was younger-Britta, Pierce, Abed, Troy, and Shirley return triumphantly.

Troy and Abed are piling up spare parts.

Did we ever figure out how to workthe burninator?

Abed shakes No. Troy rips open the oven and pulls whateverhe can out and dumps it on the growing pile of junk.

ABEDWe definitely have all the parts weneed.

They begin pulling the junk into the Dreamatorium.

TROY

$10,000, thats like a millionbucks.

ABEDTheres no way that doesnt makesense.

Troy holds up a crayon drawing of a maze inside in a larger maze, which itself is encompassed by an ever larger maze.

TROYWere building a life-sized worldinside the Dreamatorium.

ABEDExactly. In the Dreamatorium is anapartment possessing its ownDreamatorium. Time moves slowerdown there.

Troy and Abed do their friendship clap. Annie hands twostacks of papers over.

FLASHING LIGHTS, THICK FOG, and LOUD EXPLOSIONS happen thesecond Troy and Abed enter the Dreamatorium. Annie runs out.

INT. CAFETERIA - AFTERNOON

The room has been rearranged into a giant automotive shop.STUDENTS work on their GO-KARTS. Annie enters carrying studyguides. Shirley and Britta are working on their Go-Karts.

ANNIEYou two as well?

SHIRLEY$5,000 is a lot of money.

ANNIEIsnt first prize $10,000?

BRITTA Shirley and I formed an alliance.Were working together and aresplitting the prize.

SHIRLEY

We even compromised on a team name.SHIRLEY/BRITTA

They hold up a team flag - its baby Jesus wearing a Che hat.

Annie looks worried. She looks around the school and sees itbeing transformed: CONSTRUCTION WORKERS are building thetrack. STUDENTS string up banners.

Jeff notices a Go-Kart in the corner. Its beat-up butcharming.

PIERCEThat old thing? Havent driven that

for years. Not sure it still runs.(points to his kart)This one is the prize-winner. Shesbeautiful.

JEFF(looking at old Go-Kart)

She is beautiful.

Jeff reaches out, almost touching the busted Go-Kart. Rightas hes about to Britta rushes in.

BRITTA

You two need to see this.


Jeff, Pierce, and Britta arrive. Abed, and Troy are alreadythere. Racer XYZ is doing his qualifying round.

Racer XYZ finishes his lap. STUDENTS cheer as his time isdisplayed. He drives up to the group. Pierce isnt impressed.

INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT

The school is closed. Pierce is sitting in his Go-Kart at thestarting line. Jeff, Troy, Abed, Britta, and Annie are there.

PIERCEI knew he wasnt going to show up.

ANNIEMaybe we should get out of here.

JEFF(to Pierce)

Shes right - we should leavebefore someone gets hurt.

(beat)And I wasnt referring to him. I

was referring to you.(beat)

Because youre very old and closeto death already.

(beat)Youre practically dead right now,so - oh here he is.

Racer XYZ races to the starting line.

Everyone shrugs, unsure.

Racer XYZ revs his engine. Britta walks between the Go-Kartsand holds a flag in the air ala Fast and Furious .

Pierce and Racer XYZ rev their engines.

BRITTA (CONTD)2.

Both Go-Karts jump forward a bit, eager to race.

BRITTA (CONTD)1!

Britta drops the flag. Both Go-Karts burst forwards.

INT. HALLWAY - FURTHER ALONG TRACK - CONTINUOUS

Racer XYZ and Pierce battle for the lead. Sparks fly witheach collision. Pierce takes the lead heading into the finalstretch.

INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

The gang cheers as Pierce races towards the finish line.

JEFFI didnt think he was gonna do it.

Annie rubs Jeffs back.

ANNIEHave a little faith. Things aregoing to be OK.

ABEDYou should never say that.

Too late - Racer XYZ preforms a pit maneuver on Pierce.Pierce slams into the rail. Racer XYZ easily wins the race.

TIGHT ON PIERCE - Hes disoriented. He sees the group yellingat him - its DULL and SLOW. Gas pours out of his crashed Go-

Kart. He fumbles with unbuckling his seat belt.Jeff hops over the guardrail and runs to him. Abed and Troychase after him, holding him back.

INT. IN DOOR GO-KART RING - FLASHBACK

Flashbacks are in black and white. A tense race is happening.KIDS (8) slam into each other, racing brutally. Among them isJeff, the exact same age he is now.

Hes in the lead. A REDHEAD pulls up next to him.

REDHEADHey grandpa, who taught you how todrive? Henry Ford?

JEFFHow the hell do you know who that

is?REDHEAD

Wikipedia bitch.

Jeff ignores him. The Redhead whips out a laser pointer andblast Jeff in the eyes, causing him to crash into theguardrail.

Jeff starts crying uncontrollably. As other Kids pass himthey laugh and point. Pierce is in the stands watching.

Same as before.

JEFF(tough)

And I said Im never going to raceagain. That was over two weeksago, and I havent been near a GoKart since.

ANNIEIm confused, you said thishappened when you were younger.

JEFF(hurt)

Jeff leans against a wall, looking down at the old Go-Kart.He jingles the keys in his hand.

DEAN PELTON (O.S.)Its a warm day outside, perfectfor racing. And sunbathing withyour potential best friend.

(cough)JEFF.

INT. CAFATERIA - MORNING

Britta and Shirley are putting the finishing touches on theirGo-Karts. They exchange competitive glances. Britta fixes abumper sticker on her kart - Pro Choice or Death!. Shirleyfixes her own bumper sticker - Jesus Aborted Your Sins.

DEAN PELTON (O.S.)

Everyone should begin lining uptheir karts now.

INT. TROY AND ABEDS APARTMENT - MORNING

Troy and Abed exit the Dreamatorium with their Go-Kart. Inreality its a piece of crap. They dont notice.

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - MORNING

Jeff drives Pierces old kart down an idyllic Coastal

Highway. The ocean stretches out in front of him.

INT. HALLWAY - MORNING

People begin lining up their karts. Racer XYZ is in front.

EXT. COASTAL HIGHWAY - CLIFF LOOKING OVER BEACH - MORNING

Jeff sits on the hood of the Go-Kart and looks out at thesea. Hes holding a picture of Pierce.

JEFFI wish you were still here oldfriend.

INT. HOSPITAL - MORNING

A HOT NURSE is giving Pierce a sponge bath.

PIERCEGod bless private health care. You

missed a spot.(points)

Just so theres no misunderstanding, Im pointing to my penis.

INT. GROUP STUDY ROOM - MORNING

Britta, Shirley, Troy and Abed mill around. All are wearingNASCAR uniforms. Dean Pelton walks in.

DEAN PELTONAlmost ready everyone?

JEFF (O.S.)Not yet.

Jeff, also wearing a NASCAR uniform, strides in.

JEFF (CONTD)Is it too late to sign up?

DEAN PELTONFor everyone who isnt you, yes.

TROYYou didnt make a qualifying run.

ABEDHes right - Jeff will have to beat the end.

Everyone heads for the exit.

No one says anything. Dean Pelton coughs loudly.

DEAN PELTONLooks like someone didnt forget totake their overreaction pills this

morning.

Dean Pelton laughs to himself. No one joins in.

ANNIEFine. The study group is finished.

Annie leaves.


Everyone is lined up to race. Jeff is in the back. Abed andTroy are on their two-seater. Shirley and Britta are side-by-side. Racer XYZ is in the front.

Dean Pelton, wearing a pair of skimpy shorts and a tight-fitting jersey, aims a revolver in the air and speaks into ablow horn.

DEAN PELTON3.

Everyone revs their engines.

Jeffs hands grip his wheel tightly.

DEAN PELTON (CONTD)1!

Dean Pelton fires the gun. The sound terrifies him and hedrops the gun. It hits the ground and fires again, severing arope the rope that was holding a banner up, causing thebanner to fall.

Go-Karts take off down the track, but most are caught in thefalling banner. Jeff, Shirley, and Britta dodge it.

Troy and Abeds Go-Kart doesnt move. Both are confused.

ABED(snaps his finger)

Engine.

TROYKnew we forgot something.

INT. HALLWAY - FURTHER ALONG TRACK - AFTERNOON

Britta and Shirley repeatedly slam into each other.

SHIRLEY

Theres no way Im letting you winhippie!

BRITTA I cant let you continue the right-

wing, religious take over of thiscountry!

Britta and Shirley slam into each other again. Their Go-Kartsget connected. They pull away from each other, ripping offparts of the others engine. Both Go-Karts start smoking.

They roll to a pathetic stop. Everyone else passes them. They

both sigh.

INT. HALLWAY - FURTHER ALONG TRACK - AFTERNOON

Jeff and Racer XYZ vie for the lead. A CRASH occurs behindthem, Go-Karts pile into each other. Jeff and Racer XYZ lookback at the vehicular slaughter. Theyre the only ones left.

They turn a corner and Students hold out cups of water as ifit were a marathon. They both grab one. Jeff drinks hiseasily. Racer XYZ tries to drink his but it pours down hisclosed helmet and gets into his engine, causing smoke torise.

Jeff easily takes the lead as Racer XYZ struggles.

INT. HALLWAY - NEAR FINISH LINE - AFTERNOON

Jeff races towards the finish line. Students cheer.

SLOW MOTION - Jeff drives. Racer XYZ is slowly gaining onhim.

CUT TO:

Jeff crossing the finish line. Quick series of scenes:

1. Jeff accepting an oversized check. BEAUTIFUL WOMEN are oneach of his arms. Annie is disappointed and walks away.

2. Jeff is a lawyer again and defending a child murderer.

3. Jeff in a large mansion. A wild party is going on.4. Jeff as an old man, watching TV by himself.

5. Jeff in a wheelchair in the backyard of his mansion. Hedies alone ala Godfather III .

CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY - NEAR FINISH LINE - SAME AS BEFORE

Jeff is still in the lead. Racer XYZ is gaining on him.

This flashback is also in black and white. The group aresharing the cupcakes, smiling at each other; a family.

INT. HALLWAY - NEAR FINISH LINE - SAME AS BEFORE

Jeff slams on the brakes. He stops inches from the finishline. Racer XYZ races past him, winning the race.

Abed, Troy, Shirley, and Britta stand near the finish line.Confetti falls down, people cheer. Dean Pelton hands over abottle of Champagne to the victor. Racer XYZ gets on top ofhis Go-Kart and raises his arms in triumph.

BRITTA Oh! I get it. Racer XYZ is Chang.

TROY/SHIRLEY/ABEDOhhhhhh/Makes Sense/Thats why wehavent see him all week.

CHANG (O.S.)Whos a Chang?

Everyone turns - Chang is behind them, eating a sandwich.

TROYWait - if youre here, then who is-

Racer XYZ removes his helmet - its the Redhead from Jeffsflashback. The height disparity is never mentioned. Clearlyunderage, Dean Pelton tries to get the bottle of champagneback. The Redhead kicks Dean Pelton, pops the bottle andstarts chugging it.

Jeff, sitting in his kart inches from the finish line, watches the celebration.

INT. ANNIES BEDROOM - LATER

Annie is studying when she gets a text message: MEET IN STUDY

ROOM.

INT. HALLWAY - LATER

Annie walks through the hallways. Construction workers aredismantling the track. She steps over the drunk Redhead.

Annie enters - the entire group is there. They all have thestudy guides she made them.

ANNIEIs that my study guide?

BRITTA Were so sorry Annie, we shouldhave listened to you.

Everyone hugs Annie one at a time. They all take their seatsafter.

TROYJeff, I gotta ask - whyd you throwthe race?

JEFF(thinks)

Ive been taking short cuts my whole life. And they always catch

up to me. Its how I ended up atGreendale. I saw what my life mighthave been like if I won today, andI know I would have just acted likehow I was before I came here,before I met all of you.

(beat)Whatever this is, and however long

it takes, were all in thistogether.

Jeff smiles at Annie. She blushes.

PIERCECant last forever.

JEFFNothing does.

A long beat.

JEFF (CONTD)Annie.

ANNIE(startled)

JEFFThat final is still coming up.
