FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Kia ora koutou, Congratulations to all students involved in our school athletics this week. Participation, enthusiasm and behaviour was excellent. Well done team! Reminder to our skateboarders: Omanu Walking School has contacted us concerned about the speed of skateboarders when passing little ones. They have had a couple of near misses with students coming up behind them on the footpath and passing at reasonable speed. Look out for little ones, slow down when passing on the footpath, and share with care. Congratulations to the Mount Maunganui Intermediate Jump Jam team, who came second place in last weekend’s North Island final. The girls performed superbly. They were a credit to our school. Please read their article below. Sandals: As stated in the last newsletter, we have given out a number of pairs of roman sandals, at a considerable cost to the school. Moving forward, to cover costs, we will bill student accounts, for brand new sandals and footwear. If families have old uniforms, sandals and footwear that is no longer required, please consider donating these back to school for it to be donated to families in need. Have a great weekend, the sun is shining. Ma te wa Lisa Morresey Principal

JUMP JAM 2016 On Saturday, 5th November, our team, the 'Mount Majestics', competed at Baycourt in the Year 7 & 8 Open section - the top division of the competition. The girls were nervous and excited, but ready for the big challenge ahead of them. Bodies were warmed up, numerous photos taken, extra glitter spray applied and then, there they were, poised, ready to perform. And perform they did! The 1920's, synchronized swimming influenced aerobic routine, was performed by sassy, elegant, confident and fierce young ladies... with one small hitch,.a rogue shoe. Off it came, but the girls didn't let that phase them. They kept their character right until the end. Prizegiving had the whole audience, including Ms Morresey and Ms Harrison, up on their feet and dancing. And then the results. Well we just couldn't believe it! Second! And only 0.5 from the winner. We also received awards in every category for: Sportsmanship, Technical Execution, Presentation, Creativity & Costumes. We are so proud of our students: Lana Beck, Rebecca Chatfield, Kahlia Cullwick, Amber Daisley, Maddie Donovan, Emma Dooney, Maia Fleming, Maddie Ford, Ashtyn Foster, Ella Hight, Ashleigh MacLeod, Samara Manzenares, Millicent Pinder and Heidi Seymour.

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT NEWS Host Families Needed

Groups Arriving - February 2017

We are now looking for host families for groups coming at the start of next year. Please read about one host family's recent experience and see if this could be you. We need to find families before the end of the term. If you are considering hosting students, can you please contact [email protected] for further information and to register your interest.

Being an International Student Home Stay Family When the recent group of Japanese students were coming to The Mount and home stays were required, we decided to put our hand up. It was the first time we had done anything like this and thought it would be a great experience that we would all enjoy. We received a photo of our student before he arrived and some information about what he liked to eat, things he enjoyed and activities he liked to do. His name was Genki. We went to pick up Genki from school on the Sunday night along with the other host families. We were a bit nervous; fear of the unknown and about being able to communicate straight away. However, we realised there that everyone involved was in the same boat. All we could do was try and we would work it out with the student together. It was actually easier for us kiwis as the students were the ones in a strange land plus there was three of us and only one of him. When Genki arrived at home with us, he was shy at first. He liked his room and was very happy to be having his favourite food for dinner; hamburgers! Once he knew what the house rules were and what was expected of him, he seemed quite comfortable in our home. He hung out with us in the living parts of the house, joining in and immersing himself in kiwi life. It was great to be able to communicate with each other through playing games and sports, which were his favourite activities as well as with humour. He had a great sense of humour and we all had a lot of laughs. It was also great having the dog who loves playing ball. Genki really got to know her and what tricks he could play on her. It was so funny to watch. We also included Genki in our conversations and told him about how we do things. If he couldn’t understand what we were trying to say, we would write it down. His written English was amazing. He also had a translator device. We also enjoyed getting to know Genki and learning about his life in Japan. We were thrilled to receive his gifts from Japan which were yummy biscuits and chocolates, a variety of stationery and the board game; Reversi. He also wrote us a lovely letter, left in his room for us to find after he left, along with an awesome story album of his life in Japan. He also painted a large Kanji; symbols in Japanese writing, his favourite, meaning ‘Shine’, which we have framed. Genki was so polite and very respectful, a really lovely person. He was a perfect fit for our family, enjoying the same things as we do. He was happy to try new foods we offered. It was fun to prepare a variety of NZ food that we like, for him and see him like them too. He also willingly participated in all the activities we planned. It was great to see him thoroughly enjoy the things we do but also like doing other things that we take for granted. We got to do some awesome activities and introduced him to new board games plus we enjoyed playing the game he gave us. We are so pleased how our son dealt with Genki. It seemed to give him confidence and he talked freely with him and said it was fun to have him to stay.

This truly was an awesome experience. We got to go to the school for the farewell afternoon tea and see traditional performances and songs by the Japanese students that were really exceptional. Each student read out a thank you message to their host families. It was fun to also see games they played and pastimes they enjoyed there.

We feel like we now have a personal connection with a country on the other side of the world, not like our own but somehow so familiar. It really does help to make the world a smaller place. We thoroughly enjoyed having Genki to stay in our home; we didn’t want him to leave. We miss him very much. We are keeping in contact with him via email and definitely hope to see him again.

We will certainly be putting our hand up to do an International Home Stay again.

Relationships Under Crisis

Our learning about empathy

Over term 3 and the beginning of term 4, we have been learning about the way relationships are

affected by crisis. We have discussed empathy and the way people respond to and act when under

crisis. Part of our learning has been about putting ourselves in other people’s shoes and thinking

about how they might feel, what they might say, and how they might act under a crisis. We

investigated a number of famous photos showing crises that have occurred in the past. By using the

aurasma app (a virtual reality app), and spoken voice, we have thought about and shared the feelings

of the different people in each photo. To hear these, you can download the aurasma app for free

from https://www.aurasma.com/. Logon onto the account room142016 (password – banana), focus

‘Flee to Safety’ - 1965 (Photo of the Year)

Kyoichi (b. 22-02-36, d. 20-10-70)

Kyoichi became a photographer for the UPI. During the Vietnam War Kyoichi asked for a transfer

but he was denied. He used his holiday to go to Vietnam and cover the conflict by himself. Kyoichi

was later shot in the chest several times.

‘Flee to Safety’ shows two families crossing a river to escape the U.S bombing. All three children

are still alive, their names are Nguyen Van Anh, Nguyen Thi Kim Lien and Nguyen Thi Hue. The

mothers, Tran Thi Ba and Le Thi Dao have passed away. Kyoichi’s wife visited Loc Thuong

village, where Kyoichi shot the famous photo and gave Anh an album of his photos taken between

1954 and 1970.

The Vietnam Conflict

The Vietnam war started because North Vietnam was a communist place and South Vietnam

didn’t want to become communists which was what Ho Chi Minh wanted. America supported the

South Vietnam side. During the war 3 million people, including 58,000 Americans, were killed in

the war, more than half were Vietnamese civilians.

Tank man

Photographer: Jeff Widener

Jeff Widener D.O.B .August 11 1989

In 1989 the Chinese government forcefully suppressed protests in Tiananmen Square, troops achieved this by shooting people with assault rifles and driving tanks. Hundreds to thousands of demonstrators blocking the military’s way to Tiananmen Square were killed.

The massacre (aka June 4th incident or Tiananmen Square protests of 1989) started when students protested for a social reform to bring better opportunities and employment conditions.

‘Tank Man’ is the nickname for an unidentified student who stood in front of a column of T-59 tanks (30 of them in total) on June 5 1989 (the day after the incident). When the tank tried to move around him he continually blocked their path by moving in front of the tanks.

The photo is linked to the crisis because ‘Tank Man’ is protesting about the job opportunities the day after hundreds of people were killed for protesting.

Can you help our School and the Environment?

Earlier this year we had a ‘waste assessment’ carried out at MMI as part of the ‘Resource Wise Schools’ programme offered by Tauranga City Council. The results revealed that we currently send approximately 1700 kg of non-recyclable plastic waste to landfill each year. Most of this non-recyclable plastic waste consists of plastic food packaging. Imagine a pile of plastic food packaging 36 cubic metres in size! The challenge to our school community is to

help us REDUCE this type of waste. This term we ask you to consider some form of ‘litter-less’ snacks for your child’s lunchbox. Fruit comes in its own natural wrapping. Reusable containers and zip-lock bags are a great alternative to plastic wrapping for items such as chippies and yoghurt. We would appreciate your help as this will save us money in waste disposal as well as helping the environment we live in. Thank you to those who already follow these principles. Every little bit helps! Five Easy Ideas for Packaging Reduction

1. Buy in bulk. Chips, drinks, raisins, yoghurt, cheese and lots more can be found in bulk bins or family-size packs.

2. Use a drink bottle - water is waste-free, healthy and costs nothing. 3. Ditch the cling-film and foil. Neither are recyclable. Instead wrap food in paper or

cloth (Nifty sandwich-wraps are available online). 4. Choose a lunch box that is well made, and has lots of small compartments for neatly

fitting in snacks and sandwiches. 5. Look for alternatives to packaged items. Home-made yoghurt, muesli bars and

biscuits are yummier and just as cheap.
