MONEY MATTERS

Do Not Fall Victim to a Tech Support ScamTechnology has made life easier in many ways, but it has also provided another avenue for criminals to take advantage of unsuspecting users. One scam that has become increasingly popular recently involves being contacted about an alleged virus or other problem with your computer.

HOW IT WORKS In this scam, a caller identifies themselves as an employee of a well-known tech company, like Microsoft® or Norton®, and says that a problem has been detected on your computer, and they will claim to fix it by remotely accessing your computer for a fee. When you provide the information to the caller, they not only charge the fee, but may also gain access to the personal information stored on your computer.

WHY IT WORKSScammers take advantage of the reputation of these respectable companies to convince you to part with information you ordinarily would not provide. They also rely on your concern of having a virus infecting your computer.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELFWhile this particular scam often involves a phone call, the same caution should be exercised with emails or other online messages. Here are ways that you can protect yourself against potential scams:• Legitimate companies should not contact you without

solicitation on your part. Even if concerns over your computer security seem authentic, refrain from giving out information over the phone or through email. Thank the other party for alerting you but do not agree to anything. Contact a reputable company directly through a legitimate phone number you find in a phone book or on the company’s official website.

• Do not allow remote access to your computer unless you initiated the call to a reputable company.

• Sensitive financial information should never be given over the phone.

• When making payments over the Internet, use a credit card to increase your ability to dispute fraudulent charges.

Visit Chemical Bank’s Security Center at https://www.chemical-bank.com/security-center/ for additional guidance on safe com-puting, reporting fraud, and other resources related to protecting your personal and financial information.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE A VICTIMIf you feel that you have been a victim of a scam or suspect fraud on your account, contact Chemical Bank right away at (800) 867-9757. You should also contact your credit card company and ask for any fraudulent charges to be reversed. It is also important to notify the major credit-reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) of the potential for fraud on your account.

Notes from the PresidentGifts have been opened, the tree is down and holiday decorations are back in storage once again until next year. It is my hope that you and yours made some wonderful memories this Christmas while looking forward to a happy and healthy New Year.

It is our sincere wish at the Interlochen Area Chamber of Commerce that 2017 brings joy, success and prosperity to all of you. Our resolution is to help usher our town into the new year with a sense of community. We enjoy helping you make new friends and reconnect with old friends while working together to make Interlochen a great place to live, work and play. Our goal is to encourage others to visit and spend time here so they may enjoy our restaurants, stores, parks, and entertainment. We want visitors to feel welcome here. We want them to be happy they came. We want them to return again.

We all know how great this place is that we are fortunate to call home… let’s spread the word!

Keep Your Winter Hair HappyIt’s that time of year for winter hair blues. That means putting product on the hair to prevent static and dryness. Always moisturize and nourish your hair with the right product and drink lots of water to rehydrate. Stop by Hairold’s Hair Design to pick up the products that you will need.

To Floss or Not To Floss? You’ve probably heard the big news: “no studies to prove flossing helps your dental health!”

Perhaps that’s a good excuse to stop flossing but it’s not necessarily a good reason! The U.S. Surgeon General, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the U.S. Department of Human Services, your caring dental hygienist, and your dentist ALL recommend cleaning between your teeth daily.

We all know food debris, bacteria, and sticky dental plaque buildup on our teeth every day. When your teeth are feeling fuzzy the plaque is multiplying. Tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease can develop when the plaque is allowed to build up on teeth and along the gum line. Professional cleaning, tooth brushing, and cleaning between the teeth—whether you’re flossing or using other tools like interden-tal brushes, picks, or even water flossers—disrupt and remove the plaque. Less plaque means firm, healthy pink gums with no bleeding, better breath, and a brighter smile.

To maintain good health, the American Dental Association recom-mends:

1. Brush for 2 minutes 2 times a day using a fluoride toothpaste, flavor of your choice

2. Clean between your teeth at least 1 time a day with interdental cleaners (like floss!!)

3. Have regular visits with your dentist.
