Interior Signage
Pre-Construction Phase
1. During the Pre-Construction/Budgeting phase of your project determine if new
interior signs and possibly wayfinding signs (directional signs to office location
within building or for particular floor, or directory signs) will be needed for the
project.
2. For estimating purposes you can assume $80 per standard room ID sign
(based on UT Interior Signage Standard, dated Oct 2013). Larger sign types for
restrooms or conference rooms will be in $140 range.
3. The UT Interior ADA Signage standards can be found on PMCS website in the Staff
section under “PMCS Standard Operating Procedures-Project Delivery” section
“Standards”
http://www.utexas.edu/pmcs/staff/documents/UTInteriorSignStandards.pdf
4. It is advisable to use the above Interior Signage standards, on most of your
projects. The design offers great versatility in sign types, building wayfinding
signage and also building directory signage.
5. Choice of two color schemes offered, signs can be changed and updated and the
system has a unified look. C1/C2 brown beige color scheme can be regarded as
the standard color scheme. C4/C5 cool gray is the other option.
6. In some instances you may want to match to the existing older 1998 interior
signage system. This should only be considered for a small renovation area that is
trying to blend in with existing conditions.
7. Refer to page 3 of this document: Guidelines for Matching New Interior ADA
Signage to 1998 Style Standard Sign.
Programming Phase
New UT Interior Signage standards (dated October 2013)
1. If you have a PSP assigned to your project, the interior signage plan needs to be
part of their scope of work. They need to study the UT Interior signage standards
and develop a signage plan, identifying sign types per room. This will involve
client feedback and a client needs assessment.
2. If there is no PSP on the project, you can request Frauke as a team member,
depending on project size and Frauke’s current project load, determination will be
made if signage plan will be developed by Frauke or if a wayfinding consultant
needs to be hired.
2
3. Suitable wayfnding consultants that are on the ongoing PSP list are:
Dyal and Partners and Gensler
4. Other firm not on the ongoing PSP list is fd2s (they developed our interior
signage standards)

5. Once new construction floor plan is finalized check in with Space for new room
number assignments, if needed.
6. PSP or PM can contact Frauke for specific questions. The Interior Signage
document contains a detailed explanation for each sign type and its application.
7. Once PSP completes signage plan you can send to Frauke for review.
8. Include your signage plan in your TAS review for ADA compliance.
9. Once signage plan is signed off on by all parties the signs should be ordered by
the GC.
10. If signage is not part of the GC scope, they can be ordered via one of the two JOC
signage contractors.
New JOC contractors beginning end of August will be:

11. JOC paperwork for signage order will have to be completed by PM. Submit to
Emmy Mathes.
12. The UT sign shop can currently NOT fabricate any signs from the new standards
system. They are working on making this possible in the future with their new
shop set up.
3
Construction Phase
1. Sign Contractor will develop shop drawings of signage package, which will need to
be reviewed and checked for room number accuracy and room naming by PSP and
PM.
2. Average fabrication time for signage orders depending on order size is 3-4 weeks.
3. Check on parking needs for signage contractor for scheduled installation time.
4. PSP to do punch walk and provide punch list items to PM/GC/JOC contractor.
5. For sign types that use inserts, i.e. standard ST04 room sign
Contact Frauke, to provide a Word document template file to client, so they can
print their individual name inserts for their office.
6. Move in – happy client that will find their way around the new office with ease.
Warranty Phase
1. For any warranty issues contact the sign company directly within the first year.
Standard warranty one year.
2. Any questions on future sign changes contact Frauke for assistance or sign
company directly if changes are not complex.
3. A service request may have to be submitted by client depending on needed
changes and if warranty is expired.
4. Some changes can possibly be taken care of by UT sign shop with a direct work
order to them.
4
Guidelines for Matching New Interior ADA Room Signage to 1998 Style
Standard Sign
1. In order to match to the existing 1998 style room sign, new font requirements
and mounting requirements have to be followed to make the signs ADA
compliant to the latest 2012 TAS regulations.
2. Follow attached document, UT Box link to document:
https://utexas.box.com/s/ddadq2xcccfa0u1bw14h
3. Steven Lewandowski has reviewed and signed off on this document.
4. Existing 1998 signs come in three different font color schemes, cool grey, warm
grey, sand or white. Frauke has color samples available if match is unclear.
5. UT sign shop may also have information on color used for specific building.
6. UT sign shop can fabricate small number of signs according to the new ADA
specifications, estimated cost per sign $35 plus installation labor.
7. Construction Coordinator or Project Specialist to submit Supplemental Work
Order for project.
8. Austin Architectural Graphics and Building Image Group can also be used for the
order and are aware of the new requirements for the 1998 style sign.
BIG could be used for a PO under 5K.
BIG contact info: Building Image Group, Inc.

9. Original 1998 sign was sandblasted, revised new version can use acrylic or
photopolymer.
10. See Specifications samples from AAG and BIG:
UT Box link: https://utexas.box.com/s/gg6mdo8h3ny68zadjwtm
11. AAG is the only fabricator that still uses the sandblasting method. Micarta
material used for this method is not as easy to come by.

12. Sign Type options are:
For any questions contact Frauke:

6
Exterior Signage
1. If any of your project have a need for exterior signage, contact Frauke to discuss
specific needs and determine if this need can be addressed by a standard UT Exterior
Wayfinding sign or if it requires a custom design solution.
2. Frauke will be assigned as team member or SR10 request has to be submitted by
client to make request its own project.
3. Exterior wayfinding signage guidelines can be found on PMCS website in the Staff
section under “PMCS Standard Operating Procedures-Project Delivery” section
“Standards”
http://www.utexas.edu/pmcs/staff/documents/UTWayfindingSignageStandardsAugus
t2008_001.pdf
4. Any order of an exterior wayfinding sign should be coordinated with Frauke. Any
exterior wayfinding sign type and its suggested location will need to be reviewed by
Frauke and/or Mike Carmagnola.
5. JOC signage contractors are to fabricate exterior wayfinding signs.
6. Any exterior custom signage solution will need to be reviewed and signed off on by
Mike Carmagnola and possibly Dr. Clubb, based on complexity and impact of
individual request.
7. A PDF document should be provided for the review, it should contain before and after
photos of location and specifics about design/look of proposed sign.
8. PDF document will either be provided by PSP, Frauke as the project team member or
Frauke as the assigned PM.
9. If a client requests banners, this request will need to be submitted to David Rea via
Frauke. It will need to be reviewed and approved by the Campus Master Planning
Committee.
Banners should not be used for permanent building identification, or display
permanent department advertisements. In general, they should be used only for
temporary advertisements. Frauke can provide more details on specific project
requests.
10. Other possible exterior signage request could be exterior building lettering or any
kind of vinyl graphics for windows or customs sign.
11. In general the new or 1998 interior signage type style is not suited for exterior use,
for these rare instances Frauke will recommend alternate materials, for example
exterior grade zinc.
For any questions about your specific project contact Frauke:
