genreShort, dramatic comedy, silent
Interference is a dramatic comedy silent film depict-ing a universal story about humans trying to control their environment at all price. Erin, a middle aged woman, has lived all her life in solitude and concealed from the outside world. Her house is a fortress where she controls everything.
To be kept undetected from society, Erin puts foam on every single thing she owns that could produce the smallest sound. She has wired every electronic device and connected them to an earphone that she uses to listen to radio, television and music. On the televi-sion, the weather reporter announces that a storm is coming. Police patrols are evacuating the houses. Erin thinks she is secured until the uncontrollable rides over her fortifications. An insect that chirps enters the frame and then, begins a pursuit for control over external and internal threats.
synopsis
director's statmentInterference is a drama with comic over-tones; a silent film depicting a universal story about people trying to control their environment at all costs and failing. The script is pure visual storytelling. Without any dialogue, the script stages a pursuit for control between Erin and a grasshop-per that unhinges her controlled world.
When I first read the script written by Mick Dow, I was unaware of the amount of meanings that the story could convey. Control, loneliness, fear of the unknown, and friendship are many topics portrayed in this film. In this fast-paced world we are living in, everyone has a part of Erin in him. Nothing would make us leave from our fortress that we have built with our hands. We found ourselves retreated into silence, trying to overcome our internal demons and external threats that puts our obsession with control in jeopardy.
I have always been interested in surre-alism depicted in a realistic way. In this respect, I believe that Interference man-ages to link together those contraries by telling a universal story about people trying to control their environment at all costs and failing.
