1 SCOPE

1.1 Purpose

This document sets out the physical interface definitions of the Avionics Rigs for use in the MA-AFASFlight Trials.

1.2 System Overview

All Avionics Rigs comprise a VME chassis with two MVME5100 PowerPC cards, an ARINC 429interface card and an MVME761 interface module. Internal to the chassis is a 9.1 Gbyte SCSI HardDisk Drive (HDD). One of the PowerPC cards supports a discrete I/O module and the other a graphicsadapter.

Associated with the Avionics Rig are Multi-function Control and Display Unit (MCDU) manufactured byCanadian Marconi Corporation (CMC), a standard PC serial mouse/trackball and a standard PCSVGA monitor. Being a common standard, the interfaces to the latter two units will not be described inthis document.

Three variants of the rig are required; a desk top unit for in-house development work, a flying rig foruse in the BAC 1-11 aircraft operated by QinetiQ, and a flying rig for use in the ATTAS aircraftoperated by DLR.

The operating system for the Avionics Rig processors will be VxWorks provided by Wind RiverSystems, and software will be provided by MA-AFAS consortium members and integrated by BAESYSTEMS. The software will be written such that it will run with or without the use of theARINC429/discrete interface hardware; the ethernet link will be used instead and this will facilitate theuse of a laptop computer when the IHTP is required to support aircraft or simulator set-ups.

1.2.1 Rig Descriptions

1.2.1.1 Bench Rigs

The rigs used for in-house testing and development will utilise the connections on the front of theVME cards. Figure 1 identifies the positions of the connectors

Note that only one ARINC 429 interface card is depicted in Figure 1 although the wiring detailsprovided in this document allow for an additional module. This can be seen fitted to the BAC1-11 rigdepicted in Fig 2.

1.2.1.3 ATTAS Flying Rig

The rig for the ATTAS fit is the same as the bench rig but uses a chassis provided by DLR.

1.3 Document Overview

This document sets out the interface connections that are available to the user for each of the 3configurations. These connections will be used to connect the Avionics Rack to the IHTP and/or thevarious rigs and aircraft used in the MA-AFAS trials.

Document D41 defines the installation of the system using cables specified in this document.

3.2 ARINC 429 Interfaces

A single 44 pin D-type connector on the front of each SBS ARINC 429 card provides the ARINC 429connectivity. Part number for the mating connector is HDB44PTD manufactured by ITW MCMURDOand available from Farnell under order code 225-228. Fig 5 shows the pin numbering.

Figure 5 ARINC 429 connector pinout

The IHTP will support both low and high bus speeds as defined in section 2.4 of ARINC 429.Individual channels will be configurable to select the required speed. The tables below identify thespeed of each channel as required in the BAC 1-11 installation. Note that only the MCDU is drivenusing ARINC 429 in the ATTAS configuration.

All voltage levels associated with the ARINC 429 interfaces will conform to section 2.2 of ARINC 429.

3.3 RS232 Interfaces

Two RS232 interfaces are provided on an Avionics Rig; identified as COM1 and COM2. COM 1 willbe used to drive a standard serial mouse (or other pointing device). COM 2 will drive a number ofdifferent units, dependant upon the installation. In all cases, the wiring required is a standard 9 pin nullmodem cable; as such, no further definition will be given here.

3.4 RS422 Interfaces

Two RS422 interfaces are provided on each Avionics Rig (identified as SERIAL3 and SERIAL4)although only one is required. Each channel is identical and is configured for use by software. Fig 6shows the pin out.
