INTERESTING TITLEThe Last Stand? Right for now, 2018?  I Suspect so.5 years ago? No, on track.

Everyone that lives in the Wheatbelt has a shared responsibility to the health and sustainability of the WB, don’t they?  

I suspect that responsibility has waned, in fact I’m certain it has.

So what’s changed? A few examples; •WB Shires have ramped up the destructive clearing of roadside verges. 

•The dramatic spread of weeds (e.g.; love grass & fleabane). 

•There has been a ramp up of selective clearing & clearing of stand alone trees on farms and shires.   

•Spray drift that continues to wipe out road side remnants. 

•Salt encroachment which has escalated since last year’s big Feb rains,

•The tonnes of precious WB top soil that blew to SA early this winter?

An ordinary picture I paint. There is excellent work going on across the WB in conservation, on farm & off farm. 

Is this good work keeping up with what I see? I don’t think so. 

If you do, then please do not become complacent in this regard.

Is the WB going to survive? Its only 120 years old; what’s it going to be like in 500 years?

I don’t know, but I do know that everyone with some interest in the WB needs to get on board with a shared responsibility to its sustainability.  Everyone. 

It should have a brilliant future, our farmers are worlds best at what they do in not the best soils or rainfall, there are challenges ahead as they keep telling us we will have various degrees of climate change in front of us, etc. 

We do have extended dry periods here, we don’t call them droughts, and that’s a most and very mature way to look at extended dry periods. 

Enough of this, I want to tell you about my passion how each farm can do some little things that can make a big difference to the farm environment and importantly, assist the farm asset value. And add to the Shires similarly.

Across the WB we have 160 different species of eucalypts, all of them special, each with their own unique habitats. 

In the early days of landcare many plants that were considered to be good for revegetation aspects have somewhat proved to be otherwise but over the last 20 years we have learnt a lot about our native plants, and in particular the eucalypts, their habit strengths or weaknesses and strengths as to fire, strong winds, saline adaptability, dry or wet adaptability, flowering periods, etc.

Planting a few of the right plants in the right places can make a big difference to a farm in regards to the ecology and health of a farm or the Shire.

If you have knocked over some trees for whatever reason then put some back in another area. You will always find a space where they won’t get in the way of your operations, they will sit there and do their thing and help you along the way.

How’s this. A nice avenue of mallees. 

Whats the –‘s  here. Ferals?What are the +’s. Mallee, revegative strategy. Flowering. Wind. Shelter. Aesthetics. Fire suspression.  

Our WB plants have so much to offer, can add very simply, value to farms and Shires similarly. 

If the WB gets into strife, our plants can assist. They need to be treated like gold.

Our plants are incredible survivors against all odds.

Look at this! 

The WB has incredible ornamental plants that have never or rarely been cultivated. Add some of these to our gardens and parks, and tree avenues, they’ll add value & and guess what, you will feel good about it. 

Imagine if every farm planted a small clump of these: 

A quick message to farmers. 

By doing some little environmental enhancements smartly, you’re farm asset value is definitely enhanced.

Having being involved in the sale of more land than anyone else here in Australia, I can say that.

A message for Shires I believe they should have an Enviro plan and be judged accordingly as to outcomes. 

To get the balance right on the track to sustainability in all facets of the WB, for the health of our WB, our well being here, you have an excellent NRM team around, get on board with some urgency.
