Cuneo Hall officially opens its doors this summer to host ori-entation sessions for the Class of 2016. The four-story building,

What are the family requirements for working in the business? • We have finally nailed that down, with the help of Loyola’s Family Business Center. Our family busi-ness policy is that there are five years of outside employment. If there is an opening, and if a family member is qualified, they aren’t given any more consideration, but they also aren’t given any less consideration.

How do you maintain your privacy? • No one on the planet has more strangers saying, “I am however many years old, and you need to win before I die.” The media does a pretty good job; you set rules, treat them fairly, and they keep your privacy.

Loyola, Harvard join forces in VietnamLoyola’s School of Business Administration is collaborating with Harvard University faculty and staff to expand its presence in Vietnam. Har-vard’s Kennedy School and Ash Center, which administers the Fulbright Economics Teaching Program, offers more than 15 years of experi-ence in Vietnam to complement Loyola’s dedi-cation to expanding a permanent educational center in this emerging market. Faculty and staff from both schools are cooperating on execu-

tive education programs, research projects, and MBA site-studies. As the only two American universities to make long-term commitments to Vietnam, both hope to continue to explore ways in which stakeholders of Vietnam, Loyola, and Harvard will be best served.

understanding gender, culture, and consumersHow do commercials on TV, radio, the web, and in magazines and newspapers affect consumers? Associate professor Linda Tuncay Zayer, PhD, who teaches marketing in the School of Business Administration, answers this and more in her first edited book, Gender, Culture, and Consumer Behavior.

Co-edited with Cele Otnes, PhD, professor in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Cham-paign’s College of Business and renowned scholar in the area of consumer behavior and ritual consumption, the book is a compilation of the latest research on gender, culture, and consumer behavior. Chapters cover topics ranging from media literacy to feminism, and sustainable consumption to advertising and consumption related to masculinity.

meeting their matchOn March 16, the atrium at the Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) was filled with screams and tears of joy as 127 medical students learned the locations of where they would see their first patients as MDs.

“This is a day of opportunity. We don’t know what’s ahead,” says Dr. Linda Brubaker, dean of the Stritch School of Medicine, moments before the students opened envelopes that would reveal where they had matched for their residency. “Wherever you go, whatever you do know that we have unconditional pride in you. We know that you will be a success and bloom where you are planted, leaving each place better than when you arrived.”

Elected by the SSOM Class of 2012, Kevin Simpson, MD, received the award for outstanding clinical faculty, and Theresa Kristopaitis, MD, received the award for outstanding basic science faculty.

Joint project aims at a zero waste facilityLoyola’s biodiesel program and Solutions to Environmental Problems: Water students have collaborated on a research project within the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy to find an efficient way to clean and recycle the water used in the biodiesel pro-duction process. More specifically, the project will further research and test constructed wet-lands to determine the best way to clean the water for reuse.

Since its launch, researchers and students have identified the beginning biological agents (wetlands) to clear up the water, which resulted in identifying possible means to recycle the water into windshield wiper fluid. This preliminary data allowed the students to apply for an EPA P3 grant last winter to aid in funding for future research. Grant results are pending.

Local leaders tackle “The Family Business of Sports”

Pictured left to right: George H. McCaskey, Tom Ricketts, and Michael Alter

Candace Asiedu (MD ’12) finds out she’ll be a family medicine resident at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois.

Tackling the tender, often tenuous, issues of family and business was the focus of the evening as George H. McCaskey, chairman of the Chicago Bears; Tom Ricketts, chairman of the Chicago Cubs; and Michael Alter, owner of the Chicago Sky; came together to discuss “The Family Busi-ness of Sports” at the Union League Club on April 3. The event marked the 10th chapter in the

Dean’s Speaker Series hosted by Loyola’s School of Business Administration and drew a packed crowd of nearly 200. After a welcome from Dean Kathleen Getz, PhD, the event’s moderator, Keith Lambrecht, PhD, director of the Sport Manage-ment program, peppered the powerhouse panel with a slew of questions.

For the class of 2012, their time studying at Loyola is coming to a close, and that means one thing: Commencement weekend. Commencement ceremonies will run May 10–12, the School of Law ceremony will be on Saturday, May 19, and the Stritch School of Medicine ceremony will be held on June 3. In addition to ceremonies held at Gentile Arena, Mundelein Auditorium, and Navy Pier Ballroom, Commencement 2012 will also be streamed online at the Loyola website. • Luc.edu/commencement

How much attention do you pay to the press? • I have a very different problem with the media. There is frustration about minimal coverage. But when women’s sports are covered, the response is great.
