The Japan and Exchange Teaching (JET) Programme is one of the world's largest exchange programmes that employs foreign

youths to Japan with the aim of enhancing mutual understanding between Japan and other nations, while at the same time,

promote internationalization in Japan's local communities through improving its foreign language education. Started since 1987,

the JET Programme has since welcomed over 68,000 participants from 73 countries to Japan, including from Singapore.

What is the JET Programme?

There are basically 2 types of positions that you can apply for under the JET Programme. Assistant Language Teacher (ALT): Participants employed as ALTs are placed in a local school in Japan, where their main work

is to assist in the teaching of English or Foreign language classes. Majority of JETs are employed as ALTs. Coordinator for International Relations (CIR): Participants employed as CIRs will be placed in local Prefectural Offices or City

Halls in Japan and assist Japanese local governments in various international relations work. CIRs are required to have a

functional command of the Japanese language and hold at least a JLPT Level N2 Certificate.

What type of JET Positions can I apply for?

In principle, JET Programme appointments are for a 1-year period, with reappointments available

for a maximum of 5 years. Majority of JETs are with the programme for 2 – 3 years.
