Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is an international research body established on the model of international technological centers.
Its aim is to promote excellence in both basic and applied research and to facilitate economic development at national level.
IIT scientific priorities belong to four research domains. They are robotics, nanomaterials, lifetech and computational sciences.
Research at IIT is carried out in the main laboratory in Genoa, 11 research centers across Italy and 2 outstations in US.
IIT scientific plan encompasses 16 scientific priorities belonging to the four research domains (RD).
There are currently approximately 70 independent PIs (and research lines) at IIT developing the four domains in a fully cross-disciplinary research environment.
Scientists with 21 different profiles (spanning from medicine to engineering) work together to implement the Institute’s Strategic Plan.
INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH
IIT’s total staff is above 1600 people from almost 60 countries. Average age is 34 and 41% of the staff are women. The scientific field is represented approximately by 80% of overall staff.
Today, the scientific staff, over 1300 people, consists of 7% principal investigators, 10% staff researchers and technologists, approximately 38% post docs and 44% Ph.D. students.

THE SCIENTIFIC PLAN 2018-2023
The IIT research activity can be displayed by a research matrix, where each research line produce its results in four research domains.
The Scientific Plan 2018-2023 consolidates and develops IIT activity facing both scientific and social challenges, against the backdrop of an intense technology transfer activity.
