I am always looking for plays that reveal a fascinatingcharacter, explore a little-known idea, dig a little

deeper into a misunderstood issue, or offer asurprising and theatrical take on a familiar story.

In this age of ever-revolving news headlines and24-hour constant coverage, the personal narrativesof the people whose lives are affected by “the bigevents” often get lost or obscured. So my goal is

to bring these narratives to life through the intimate, communal, commercial-free experience of live theatre.

Our 2011/2012 season will expose you to a mosaicof extraordinary people, stories, issues and ideas

that go beyond the headlines, fly under the radarand exist off the grid.

InterAct Theatre Company is a theatrefor today’s world, producing new and

contemporary plays that explore the social, political, and cultural issues of our time.

The Philadelphia premiere of TTHHEE HHOOWW AANNDD TTHHEEWWHHYY, by Sarah Treem, puts the female body frontand center as it pits two generations of brilliant anddaring evolutionary biologists against each other ina battle for academic survival. The Philadelphiapremiere of MMIICCRROOCCRRIISSIISS, by Mike Lew, imagines aglobal lending scheme run amok when a hard-partyingfinancial entrepreneur bites off more than he canchew. The world premiere of EETTCCHHEEDD IINN SSKKIINN OONN AASSUUNNLLIITT NNIIGGHHTT, by Kara Lee Corthron, follows anAfrican American painter who grapples with racialand other demons after exiling herself to the whitestplace on earth. And our inaugural OOUUTTSSIIDDEE TTHHEEFFRRAAMMEE festival of presented works will feature amultiplicity of dynamic and compelling voicesexploring the ever-widening boundaries of ourcultural landscape.

On the eve of a prestigious conference, anup-and-coming evolutionary biologist wrestles

for the truth with an established leader in the field.Their real challenge has been negotiating the fiercely

male-dominated enterprise of academic science, wherea female perspective has rarely been considered… untilnow. But the two trail blazing women share more than apassion for science, as the revelation of long-held secretsthreatens to change their personal trajectories. Evolutionand emotion collide in this thought-provoking new playabout science, family and the survival of the fittest.

JUNE 1 – 24, 2012 WRITTEN By: KARA LEE CORTHRONDIRECTED BY: WHIT MACLAUGHLIN

Originally commissioned by InterAct in 2009, this

intense and theatrical drama about lust, betrayal, and

culture clash marks the arrival of one of the most exciting

new voices in American theatre. The compelling story follows

Jules, an African-American painter who has fled the U.S. under

mysterious circumstances and embraced a whole new life

and family in Iceland. As Barack Obama’s meteoric presidential

campaign makes Jules more homesick than ever, her husband

presents their biracial daughter with a shocking present,

and a hometown visitor shows up at Jules’ studio.

This whirlwind of events brings the demons of Jules’

past crashing down on her new family and

challenges her sense of racial

and personal identity.
