We are nearing the end of another successful academic year for some courses in T. John Group of Institutions. This is that time of the year when final semester

students are getting ready to face their final exams and step into the big world outside. My prayers and best wishes are with you and wish all of you taste success and glory. Looking back, this year we have achieved more and progressed ahead

as compared to last year whether in academics or extra-curricular activities and this is immensely heartening. I extend my greetings to the entire family of TJGI for having put their best efforts forward with dedication and we look ahead to continue in the same vein creating new frontiers in the field of educational excellence.

As another academic year draws to a close, it is a heartfelt feeling to see the institutions excel in all the fields year on year. Whether it is academics

or sports, students have set and achieved high standards in both. This year saw many more activities in the form of national and state conferences and seminars, presentations, industrial visits and placements have also begun on a war footing. I wish all the even semester students score high marks in their forthcoming exams and a successful life ahead wherein they enter into the strata of real life challenges. I ensure that they are well prepared to cope with any unfamiliar situations and emerge with great success. I also appreciate all T. Chairman Dr. Thomas P. John joined the Congress Party on February 18, 2013. He was welcomed by the Karnataka State Congress President, Dr. Parameshwar, at the party office on Queens Road. Present on the occasion were Sri. H. Vishwanath, Member of Parliament, Sri. N.A. Haris, MLA, Sri. T. John MLC, Sri. M.M. Nanaiah, Ex-Minister, Smt. Rani Satish, Ex-Minister and many others.

CelebraTion of 150Th birThDay of swami ViVekananaDa TJIT celebrated the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on January 12, 2013. The occasion was graced by the Campus Director, Dr. S. Padmanabha, (Principal,TJIT) and Dr. Prabhu Kumar (Dean, TJIT). The Campus Director enlightened the gathering about the life and ideals of Swami Vivekanada through a wonderful presentation. This was followed by a motivational speech by Dr. S. Padmanabha. He quoted real life examples on how we can emulate Swami Vivekananda. The next speaker was Dr. Prabhu Kumar. Through his speech he stressed on the need for changing our attitude.

TJiT Tarang 2013Talent Search Event ‘Tarang-13’ was inaugurated at TJIT on March 14, 2013. The fest began with an inaugural function which was attended by Wg. Cmdr. P. Sambasivan, (Campus Director), Dr. S. Padmanabha, (Principal, TJIT) and Mr. Joseph Vaseegaran, (Administrative Officer, TJGOI). The focal event for the day was the ‘Talent Show’.

On March 15, 2013, various sports events were held and the winners were Cricket - CSE Team, Cricket (Faculty) – ECE Team, Volleyball– Mechanical Team, Football – Mechanical Team, Throwball – First Year BE Team.

The event owes its grand success to the hard work and dedication of the cultural coordinator Mr. Narayanaswamy (Associate Professor, ECE Department) and sports coordinator Mr. Govind Kumar (Physical Education Director) and their teams which included faculty members and student volunteers.

Talk on uniVersiTy of leeDsDr. Andy Bulpit, from the Department of Computer Science, University of Leeds addressed postgraduate students from CSE on January 21, 2013. The talk focused mainly on the opportunities and courses available for students at the University of Leeds. He was accompanied by Ms. Anuradha Ajit, (Dean, The Chopras) as well as Ms. Sujatha (International Officer for the University).

TCs TeChbyTes iT QuizTCS TechBytes IT Quiz first level was organized by the Dept of CSE on March 15, 2013. Dr. T R Mahesh, Professor & Head, CSE was the Chief Coordinator. More than 44 students from different engineering disciplines (CSE/ISE/MECH/ECE) took part and 10 best teams (2 members each) were selected for the regional level IT Quiz which will be held at SJBIT on April 9, 2013.

iDa ConneCTIndia Didactics Association (IDA) in collaboration with Academy for Creative Teaching (ACT) organized IDA Connect ‘The Education and Training Forum’ on January 17, 2013 at Hotel Lalit Ashok. Dr. G P Prabhu Kumar, Dean, TJIT, Mr. Srinivasa H.P, Dept of CSE represented TJIT at the forum.

workshoP on eThiCal haCking anD Cyber forensiCs

A two day ethical hacking and cyber forensics workshop was organized by the Dept. of CSE, TJIT on February 22, 2013, in association with Tech Bharat Consulting, New Delhi. Mr. Kislay Bharadwaj from Tech Bharat Consulting participated in the inaugural ceremony. The workshop provided an overview of the fundamental principles of ethical hacking, network

security, web application security, vulnerabilities of security aspects and developing solutions for them.

raTe 2013The 2nd National Conference ‘RATE 2013’ (Recent Advances in Technology and Engineering) was organized by TJIT from March 27-28, 2013. It was aimed at bringing together researchers and experts across emerging fields of science and technology. The conference covered a broad spectrum of topics such as wireless systems, mobile computing, cloud and grid computing and artificial intelligence. Over a hundred papers from all over India were presented at the conference.

Dr. K Ramchand, Chief Controller, R&D, DRDO (Ret’d), Bangalore was the Chief Guest. Dr. Shreekrishna Kumar, Director, AICTE - South Western Regional Office and Mr. Ganesh Shenoy, Vice President of HR Dept., HSBC were the Guests of Honour. Dr. Thomas P. John, Chairman, T. John Group of Institutions presided over the conference.

inDusTrial VisiT To CDaCVIII Sem CSE students visited CDAC (Center for Development of Advanced Computing) on March 1, 2013. There was a presentation on supercomputer ‘PARAM PADMA’ developed by CDAC. Mr. Soundary Rajan, CDAC Technical Engineer explained the working of the supercomputer.

Staff Development Programme was organized in TJCN on March 13, 2013 by Mrs. Ramalakshmi R, HOD of Pediatric Department under the guidance of Dr. Ruby John. Group of professionals met as part of the journal club where recent nursing research articles were

critically evaluated in five different specialties of Nursing. All the PG and UG faculties attended the programme.

VisiTs• The Pediatric Dept. conducted an observation visit to juvenile

home and mentally retarded children’s home for III Year B.Sc (N) and M.Sc (N) students on February 2013. Ms. Uma Maheshwari and Ms. Smitha Mathew, lecturers from the department accompanied the students.

• As a part of the curriculum, Pediatric department of TJCN had conducted an observation visit to kidzee International School (Day Care Center and Pre-School). The programme was conducted on February 28, 2013 by 31 III Year B.Sc (N) students under the support of faculties Ms. Jisha Ajo and Ms. Suma.

• As part of the curriculum, students of TJCN PB B.Sc II Year, B.Sc III Year and M.Sc I Year visited Nightingales Centre for Ageing and Alzheimer’s on February 19 and 27, accompanied by Ms. Josephine

Cynthia, Mr. Rejith Kumar and Ms. Yaga Jeyanthi. A brief orientation and a class on Dementia was taken by Ms. Shruthi, Psychologist from Nightingales.

Measurement’ in IEEE EMBS Special Topic Conference on Point-of-Care Healthcare Technologies from January 16-18, 2013 at Sheraton Bangalore.

• Dr.P V Rao of Telecom Engg. Dept. was a subject expert in the Doctoral programme of Jain University in Electronics Engineering. He also took a special session for PHD students on March 23, 2013.

• Dr.P V Rao of Telecom Engg. Dept. delivered a talk on ‘Need of Low Power in Current Technologies’ on March 1, 2013 for UG and PG students of Dept. of Electronics and Communication Engineering of Francis Xavier Engineering College.

Former President of India, a recipient of India’s Highest Civilian Award Bharat Ratna and a Chief Architect of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Program, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam visited T. John College of Pharmacy on February 20, 2013 for a motivational interactive session with the students of T. John Group of

Institutions. A visionary who has donned many a hats in a glittering career of technological and social achievements, Dr. Kalam floored the students with his talk.

Highlights of Dr. Kalam’s talk were:

• Recitation of a poem named “I will fly and fly”

• His walk down memory lane as a student and the scientific temper at those times when the technology was still in developing mode

• Motivating students across professional lines to collaborate and involve in innovative work for the society

• His achievements in Biomedical Field – Development of Kalam-Raju Tent and Light Weight Caliper (LWC)

• Oathforthestudents:* I will have a goal and work hard to achieve that goal. I realize

that small aim is a crime

The event began with a welcome speech by Principal of TJCP, Dr. Vineeth Chandy followed by an introductory speech by the Chairman of T. John Group of Institutions, Dr. Thomas P. John, address by Shri. T. John, MLC and Founder of TJGI and concluded with the vote of thanks by Campus Director of TJGI, Wing Commander (Ret’d) Shri. P. Sambasivan.

Apart from TJGI students, students from other colleges across Bangalore such as Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy, Acharya BM Reddy College of Pharmacy, PES College of Pharmacy, Hill Side College of Pharmacy, Oxford College of Pharmacy, East point College of Pharmacy, Dayanand College of Health Sciences, Islamiah Institute of Technology attended the session. Scientists of Raman Research Institute were also among the attendees.

Before departure, Dr. Kalam planted a tree sapling in the T. John Campus premises symbolizing ‘Go Green and Save the Planet’ mantra of his. He also presented his new book to the Chairman of TJGI Dr. Thomas P. John. VisiTs• M. Pharma students of TJCP visited Mycure Pharma Private Limited, Bangalore on March 11 & March 30, 2013. The company formulates Nutraceuticals like protein powders and multivitamin powders. PG research students of Pharmaceutics

Department received huge quantities of blend mix for their research work ahead.

• Mrs. Khalida Khanum, Dr. Sandhya and Mr. Ranajith, staff of TJCP attended the International Conference held under India BIO 2013 from February 4-6, 2013 at the Lalit Ashok Hotel. It was an opportunity for the staff to get exposed to various sophisticated and improvised equipments exhibited by industry leaders like Biocon, CFTRI and Biocenter.

• Students of TJCP visited Sagar Multispecialty Hospital, Bangalore on March 19, 2013. The visit was to familiarize the students on use of sophisticated medical instruments and the functioning of different wings such as Dialysis Unit, Blood Unit, CT & MRI Scan Dept. in a multi-specialty hospital.

• TJCP has been permitted for one year (monthly visit) to access Library of Regional Research Institute, Bangalore. This development presents a unique and invaluable opportunity for Pharmacy Dept. students to avail the mammoth literature surveys available at the library for their herbal drug formulations. An enormous development was the authentication of many a medicinal plants from TJCP garden by the research scientists of RRI for better research. TJCP takes this opportunity to congratulate all its faculty members and staff for their efforts.

• On March 19, 2013, TIMS organized a guest lecture by Professor Vijaykumar, Chief Mentor of Mindkap Career Solutions on behavioral skills for MBA II and IV Sem students. This was held to hone the students as future managers with a focus on developing their soft skills.

• TIMS organized a guest lecture on January 18, 2013 by Mr. Shiva Raj accompanied by Mr. Krishnan from Mukesh Info Serve who delivered a presentation on SAP course. The main purpose of the lecture was to enhance education by enabling students through SAP course. They have offered a certified course for interested students.

naTional youTh weekTJC celebrated the 150th Birth A n n i v e r s a r y of Swami Vivekananda as National Youth Week from January 12-18, 2013. Dignitaries comprised of the Campus Director, Wg. Cdr. (Ret’d) P. Sambasivan, Guest of Honor, Mr. Tapas Datta,

the Principal, Dr. Shikha Tiwari and the Vice Principal, Dr. Nilanjana Basu. The guest speaker Mr. Tapas Datta, is a scholar in the sphere of Swamiji’s ideals and teachings and is also responsible for an ‘International Film Project’ on Swami Vivekananda. He enlightened the audience regarding Swamiji’s life and his philosophy. An exhibition was also held on Swamiji’s pictures and quotations, done by the students of TJC.

• Blood Donation Camp - TJC conducted a blood donation camp on January 18, 2013 in co-ordination with Lion’s Blood Bank and Victoria Hospital. In all 136 units of blood was collected.

Programme on imPaCT of union buDgeTA programme on the impact of the Union Budget was organized by the Department of Management Studies on March 4, 2013. Principal of TJC Dr. Shika Tiwari gave the welcome address to the gathering. Dr.

D. Loganathan, Director of Management studies gave the introductory address and Campus Director Wg. Com. P Sambasivan delivered a special address for this occasion. The IV-Sem

MBA students participated and presented the Impact on Union Budget covering problems in economic development, society, enterprise levels and individual levels. Shri Kameshwarn, Auditor of major reputed companies in Hosur of Tamil Nadu state was the Chief Guest who delivered the pros and cons of the Union Budget.

Pre-PlaCemenT TrainingDepartment of Management Studies organized an interactive session on Logical Reasoning and Comprehensive Problem Solving Ability for MBA IV Sem students as a part of pre-placement training activity. fDP Program CfTriMr. Sathish Kumar R, Sr. Lecturer from Department of Hotel Management attended a five day workshop on ‘Alcoholic Beverage – Quality & Safety Aspects’, which was organized by CFTRI Mysore from February 18-22, 2013. He learned the various techniques involved in the preparation of beverages such as wine and fenni. He also had an opportunity to learn the quality and safety aspects behind the processing and bottling of various beverages. • Students of M.sc Biotechnology IV Sem visited Bangalore Bio exhibition held on February 5, 2013 at the Lalit Ashok Hotel. The

exhibition was on different types of biotech related companies and instruments. Companies like Biocon, CFTRI, Biocenter etc. were present in full force.

• B.Sc Biotechnology students under the guidance of Mr. Adil Khan were taken for an industrial visit to Bangalore Dairy on February 20, 2013, Mr. Srinivasa Murthy, Dy. Manager, Marketing, explained the complete milk processing from procurement from the rural areas till it reaches the mega dairy in Bangalore.

T. John siXes - 2013‘T. John Sixes 2013’ was organized by

Sri Lankan students at T. John Group of Institutions on February 16, 2013. 12 teams from different colleges across Bangalore city which included Sri Lankan students as their team members participated in the tournament. T. John College A team won the trophy while T. John College B team was the first runners-up and Sambrama College team received the second runners-up trophy.

lankan fooTball ChamPions -2013Sri Lankan students of T. John College participated in A B I M A N A - 2 0 1 3 , an event for Sri Lankan students organized by Acharya Institute on March 31, 2013. For the second time in a row TJC Sri Lankan students won the Football Championship Trophy in ABIMANA-2013. Kevinda Hettiarachchi BBM II Sem was chosen as the ‘Best’ football player.

John College secured 1st place in the Chess Tournament held under KREEDA 2013, an intercollegiate sports fest conducted by the PES institute of Hotel management from January 17-18, 2013. The tournament was coordinated by Mr. Ravi Chander Reddy (Dept. of Hotel Management) and Mr. Govinda Kumar B (Physical Education Director, TJGI).
