Objective- To create a environmentally friendly
resort in Pulau Ubin, in terms of both construction and maintenance.
- To preserve the rustic outlook of Pulau Ubin.
We chose to build our Green Resort at the Noordin beach as the water is shallow, and the resort can overlook the vast water body.
Water body can be used for several activities for the tourists who is staying at the resort.
Noordin Beach
Noordin Beach
A wall of sand would be built at where the current wooden silts are. (Empoldering)
The water would be pumped out of the selected area.
The land would be then compressed.A granite wall would be built at the
side of the sand wall which is facing the sea to prevent erosion.
Usage of scrap/reused metal- By reusing old metal, energy and
fuels can be saved as new metal need not be produced.
- Carbon emissions can be reduced as lesser fossil fuels are burnt for the production of new metal.
Gutters on roofs- Guide rainwater down from the roofs to
the filters- Water used for other stuffs. Windows- One way mirrors will be used as it would
reflect sunlight out of the resort. This would cool the inside of the resort, hence reducing and energy needed to cool the place down.
Construction
The windows of the rooms will be facing the North and South of Pulau Ubin. This would prevent direct sunlight from entering the rooms throughout the day, hence reducing the energy needed to cool the room down.
Noordin beach has strong waves the ideal for harnessing of tidal energy.
Solar panels would be placed on the roofs of the resort.
- Since Pulau Ubin is generally sunny all year round, a lot of solar energy can be harnessed
- Excess energy produced during the day would be stored in rechargeable batteries, and use at night.
Powering the resort
Wind Mills- We thought of using windmills as a
source of energy.- However, the wind at Noordin Beach
is too gentle to generate any energy. Furthermore, we do not have enough area for windmills.
Solar panels
Flushing water is using rain waterPlaces without blockage will have
water catchment areas to trap rain water. The rainwater would be filtered and used for flushing.
Garden toilets:Toilets surrounded in trees thus
providing rustic experience
Garden Toilets
The roads will have two types of light1) LED2) Road lampsLED lights are very bright and
energy saving, hence reducing the amount of fossil fuel burnt.
Road lamps have solar panels to collect energy in the afternoon
Lights will only be on after 6.30pm
To not affect the rustic feel:Vans would be changed to
electrically powered ones so as to reduce gas emissions.
Bumboats will follow Singapore rivers converting it into electrically powered ones for the same reason.
India’s case study
Electrical cars are cleaner than petrol cars. This is because they secure their power from batteries, the sun or hydrogen fuel cells.
Electrical cars are also more fuel-efficient, get better mileage and have less moving parts to wear out.
Cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells are emission-free, lightweight, compact, three times as efficient as gas engines, have excellent ranges, easy refueling and are totally safe. By being more fuel efficient, the amount of money
saved on fuel is significant.
India’s case study
Furthermore, electrical cars are extremely easy to operate as they are basically the same. On top of that, they are silent which has many benefits – a more relaxing and comfortable ride.
Last but not least, electrical energy to power the car may be unable to depend on sustainable energy like wind completely, most of the energy comes from coal. This seem like going a big round just to arrive at the same problem. However, the problem has been greatly reduced because of the small amount of fossil fuel used.
Transport (LRT)
LRT- We thought of using LRT as another
form of transport from the jetty to our Green Resort for the following reasons:
1) It was more comfortable2) Faster
Transport (LRT)
However the following cons were taken into consideration:
1) Expensive2) May lose Pulau Ubin’s rustic feel3) A track have to be built, hence
endangering the habitats of animals.4) Tourists would lose out on seeing
the biodiversity of Pulau Ubin.
Includes: Jungle trailWater sportsPoints of interest: Quarries and
temple Stage
Jungle trail
Objectives:Go through different terrains.Gives tourist a close-up to flora and
fauna of Pulau Ubin. For the adventurous.
First Aid
First Aid post would be placed along the jungle trail.
The intervals for the First Aid post is roughly 200m apart.
Rationale:Since our resort is location at the
seaside, we have decided to use the sea for our advantage.
Water sports would attract many people, as this would be a rare opportunity for them.
Water Slides
The water sports we are taking into considerations are:
1) Canoe2) Kayaking3) Wind Surfing (Tentative)
Sports like jet skiing would be left out as petroleum would have to be used, and gas emissions would be produced.
Gives tourist an opportunity to check out places that is rustic and yet modern in its technologies.
Gives the tourist a new experience.
Any questions?
