What is a Digitally Contoured Back Surface design ?
It is a Computer Aided Progressive Design which is placed on the back surface of the lens and contains both the patients prescription and the progressive addition.
What is needed to produce theses lenses?
First, a highly sophisticated calculation converts the patient’s prescription and other parameters into a surface map of up to 15,000 points.
Second, an extremely accurate CNC (Computer Numeric Control) Machine cuts this point map onto the back surface of a single vision lens. The machine cuts with such fine precision that the lens is almost polished by the cutting process.
Third, a very sophisticated CNC Polishing machine is used along with a specially made foam tool and polishing slurry to finalize the lens surface to a high luster.
Next , a Laser Engraver is used to engrave
reference marks and add power marks on the
Back surface of the lens.
Note: Equipment is a Minimum 2 Million USD not including Research and development
Finally, you need a Lab that understands this new technology and is constantly innovating and tweaking the process to produce the highest quality product.
You need a lab that maintains high standards for quality and service.
A Lab that will keep your practice on the cutting edge of technology far into the future.
You need CSC !
CSC FreeForm Laboratory
Why should I be putting patients in this lens?
Because you can now give your patient a completely customized lens for his particular visual need.
You can give them a prescription that is more accurate by a factor of 10.
You can improve their visual field by up to 15%
They can’t get this lens from Lenscrafters !
What is Intellect and What are the benefits of each design?
is a series of Two Progressive Designs and Four Special Purpose Designs.
Progressive Designs Special Purpose Designs
1. The Fixed Design 1. The Professional 2. The Personalized Variable 2. The Outdoor
3. The Drive 4. The Golf
The Personalized Variable Design - Advantages over conventional PAL Designs
Wider Field of Vision since the Progressive surface is on the rear (CC) surface. The Keyhole Effect.
Distribution of lateral aberrations gives more comfortable vision in the periphery.
Progressive design that integrates additional parameters in its calculation
Higher level of personalization applied - Adapted to the user's physiognomy
More accurate lens design in power, convergence and optimized visual fields.Ensures that the optimum progressive-lens design is created for thechosen frames. Prescription more accurately produced than a conventional PAL by a factor of 10
The Personalized Variable Design – The Six Parameters for Success
1. Reading Distance 2. Monocular Pupillary Distance
The Personalized Variable Design – The Six Parameters for Success

6. Fitting Height
Variable fitting height: 16mm as minimum.
The Personalized Variable Design – Why do I need to take the measurements ?
* Your Patient will have greater satisfaction and visual comfort.
* Your patient will have a wide range of sharp vision at all distances.
* Your Patient’s reading addition will be optomized for his actual reading distance
* Your Patient will have smoother transition between zones
* Your Patient will not be bothered by distortions due to Pantoscopic angle or Frame Wrap.
* Your Patient will appreciate the fact that you’ve taken the time to fully customize a visual solution just for them.
* Your Patient will notice the difference in the accuracy of the Rx
The Personalized Variable Design – What happens if I don’t take the extra measurements?
Standard PAL Parameters:
Right/Left eye pupillary distance.
Fitting height
EXTRA PARAMETERS RANGES
Working distance (cm) Min. 25 / max 50Vertex distance (mm) Min 6 / max. 30Pantoscopic angle (°) Min. -5 / max. 25Wrap angle (°) Min. 0 / max. 15
You already measure these !
But look at the range of other items which affect the accuracy of the patient’s prescription !
Note: 1 Centimeter = 0.3937008 Inches
Parameters Default Value
Wrap angle (°) 5
Pantoscopic angle (°) 10
Vertex Dist. (mm) 12
Working Dist. (cm) 40
The Personalized Variable Design – What happens if I don’t take the extra measurements?
Then these are the default values used.
What if the patient reads at 35 cm
vs the 40 cm default?
The Personalized Variable Design – What happens if I don’t take the extra measurements?
You have allowed the patients Frame Selection to compromise his visual acuity.
The Personalized Variable Design – How do I take the measurements ?

Have we got a tool for you !
• Why should I present these lenses to patients.
– They will feel that they had the most personalized service they ever had in an Optical Practice. They will feel that your office is on the cutting edge of visual technology. This equates to more referrals and more business.
– You can offer them true visual solutions instead of compromises or one size fits all technology.
– You can offer them this cutting edge technology at a price that is competitive with older technology while maintaining a healthy profit margin.
– You will not lose these patients to Large Retail Chains or Big Box Stores.
2. If I can’t take these measurements does the patient still benefit from using the default measurements for the Personalized Variable Design ?
Yes - Their visual field is still as much as 15% Wider than a conventional PAL.
Yes – The Rx is more accurate than a conventional PAL.
Yes - Some of the defaults such as Vertex Depth and Reading Distance may
closely approximate the actual measurement.
Yes – They will usually have more increments of transition in power than a
conventional PAL.
Is there an Option other than the Variable Design ?
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which Designs require special measurements ?
The Professional requires a Near Working Distance and Far Working Distance in inches
The Personalized Variable requires Fitting Ht, Mono Distance PD, Vertex Depth, Panto-
scopic Angle, Wrap Angle, and Reading Distance in Inches
The Fixed Design - Advantages over conventional PAL Designs
Has 3 fixed corridor lengths (22, 19, 16,)
Wider Field of Vision since the Progressive surface is on the rear (CC) surface. The Keyhole Effect.
More corridor length options and wider distortion free corridors make it easier to convert 1st time Presbyopes. Less Non-adapts.
Distribution of lateral aberrations gives more comfortable vision in the periphery.
Conventional PAL Intellect Back Surface Design
Prescription more accurately produced than a conventional PAL by a factor of 10.
So What Else Is New ? - Four Special Purpose Designs
1. The Professional Design - A virtually distortion free occupational lens which is customizable for virtually any working distance while maintaining clear near vision.
2. The Outdoor Design - The first progressive lens designed to practice outdoor activities. Provides clear field of far vision which is 20% wider than conventional PAL’s and wider distortion free intermediate zones plus better depth perception.

Yes – It has been submitted to VSP for inclusion in the Eyefinity Drop Down Menus but
until their review process is complete these Designs may be ordered using the
procedure for Special Lenses. This will require you to charge your patient
according to this procedure. We have enclosed an instruction sheet for your
convenience and there is an online calculator for determining what to charge on
the Eyefinity Website.
The Formula for Special Lens Charge is – 80% of your U&C Fee minus the lens allowance plus your lens dispensing fee. Please note that Options normally covered under the patients plan are not covered under the Special Lens Calculation.
(See Example Next Page)
Example of Special Lens Charge Procedure:
Lab Charge for CR39 Personalized Variable Progressive Lens = $ 85.00
Times 3 to get U&C Fee (Example Only) = $ 255.00
Charge 80% of U&C Fee = $ 204.00
Subtract $ 35.00 For Progressive lens allowance (Example only) = $ 169.00
Minus your Dispensing Fee of $40.00 (Example Only) = $ 129.00
You should collect $129.00 from your Patient.
