INTEGRATING POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY INTO OUR TEACHING: THE ROLE OF

MINDSET, HOPE, GRIT AND CHARACTER STRENGTHS REVEALED IN

LITERATURE AND HISTORY

Course Number: EDU 524 Section: 14

(3 graduate credits or 2 in-service credits)

June 25-June 28; M-Thursday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., RVC Campus

Tuition and Fees: Graduate: $900 or In-Service: $495

This course will share the most recent research in positive psychology including mindset

(attribution theory), hope, grit and character strengths combined with understandings in the field

of brain research into the teaching through lessons made clear in literature and history. The secrets

of the positive psychology character traits will be unlocked through the power of the messages that

can be revealed and embedded in lessons. Students will view literature/history through the lens of

positive psychology and in the process be directed to unlock the nature of their own self-belief.

Teachers will discover the character strengths of their students and will develop a curriculum unit

to teach to those strengths. This course has the power to help your students discover the power of

hope in their own lives through the teaching of social studies. Instructor: Kevin Sheehan Ed. D.,

Molloy College is an associate professor at Molloy College, where he has served on the faculty for

over a decade. In 2013, Molloy College recognized Kevin with its Faculty Leadership Award for his

Kevin the Distinguished Social Studies Educator Award for his efforts in preparing social studies

teachers. Prior to his work at Molloy College, Kevin was the K-12 Social Studies Director for the

Oceanside School District and was recognized as the outstanding supervisor for social studies by the

New York State Council for Social Studies in 2002.
