Learning Objectives

increase our understanding of ICT integration

increase our ability to use ICT in our lessons

increase our understanding of how to use ICT to

facilitate improvements in students' learning and achievement

Brainstorm 1

What is ICT?

What is ICT integration?

Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication technologies(ICT) are:

The computing and communications facilities and features that support and enhance teaching, learning and a range of activities in education

ICT can involve:

Processes - decision making, problem-solving…Applications - Microsoft Office, educational software…

Equipment - digital and video cameras, computers, sound speakers…

ICT Integration

ICT integration is a process of using any ICT tool to enhance and support student learning (Williams 2003). (i.e. information resources on the internet, multimedia, PowerPoint, Word processing, digital and video cameras)

ICT integration is a process of applying technology to the curriculum to improve teaching and learning. Its success depends not only on the availability of technology, but also heavily on the pedagogy and methodology used (Honey 2000).

The computer should be fitted into the curriculum, not the curriculum into the computer (Earle 2002).

Page 6: Integrating ICT: Part 1

Why should we use ICT in our classes?

Research evidence has confirmed that effective ICT integration can promote student-engaged learning (Swann 2005).

ICT motivates students to be more interested in the lesson.

ICT assists the teacher in incorporating a variety of modern methodologies.

ICT meets the needs of a variety of learning styles, Multiple Intelligences and ability levels.

ICT can support various types of interaction: learner-content, learner-learner, learner-teacher (Chou 2003.) These types of interaction make the learning process more interactive and learners can become more active and engaged.

Using ICT to support learning means that we shift our focus from teachers using ICT during the lesson, to students using ICT during the lesson

Page 7: Integrating ICT: Part 1

Activity 1

1 .List all the ICT software and hardware available to you and students

2 .Make a wish list of any ICT software and hardware you would like to have in the school

3 .Discuss in groups how you could use these resources in your lessons

Page 8: Integrating ICT: Part 1

Many teachers are already using ICT to support teaching

We need to make sure we are also using ICT to support learning

This means we must shift our focus to students using ICT during learning (class) time

ICT and Modern Pedagogy

To teach using 21st Century pedagogy, educators must be student centred. Our planning and assessments must be inclusive, differentiated and contextual; based on real world examples .

Students must be key participants in the assessment process, involved in it from  start to finish, from establishing purpose and criteria, to assessing and moderating.

Educators must establish a safe environment for students to collaborate in but also to discuss, reflect and provide and receive feedback in.

We should make use of collaborative and project based learning, using enabling tools and technologies to facilitate this

What is a WebQuest?

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the internet

A WebQuest is set up so that students can work individually or co-operatively in groups to complete the tasks

A WebQuest includes an Introduction, Task, Process, Resources, Evaluation and Conclusion

Cyber safety and other safety policies

Why should students not be allowed on the internet without a teacher present?

Why is teacher supervision important?

Summary

Reflect in your teacher journal…

How are you using ICT to support teaching ?

How are you using ICT to support learning ?

What training and support do you need?
