This brochure is an overview of the grade one curriculum. For a complete list of

curriculum outcomes, please visit the school website.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

The ELA program is designed to have the students read, write, listen, speak, view, and represent in order to develop an understanding of the world.

READING & VIEWING

Guided lessons begin each reading class focusing on how particular reading strategies are used to make sense of text. We will be developing comprehension skills, such as: making connections, making mental images, questioning/wondering, retelling, predicting and summarizing. Following class mini-lesson, children are given the opportunity to practice the strategies independently while the teacher confers with individual children or works with a small group on a particular strategy or focus. The workshop ends with a sharing time where children are given an opportunity to share their learning.

WRITING & REPRESENTING

Students will also learn about and write a variety of written products, such as personal narratives, creative stories, lists, cards, directions, poems, etc. We will learn about these written forms through teacher modeling, shared and interactive writing, and finally independent writing.

SPEAKING & LISTENING

Through presentations of work, Star Student, Classroom Circle, and Reader’s Theatre, students will have the opportunity to speak in front of the class, share about themselves, as well as answer and direct classroom discussion.

MATHEMATICSThe goal of the mathematics curriculum is to develop the students’ ability to do logical and creative thinking, as well as problem solving in authentic situations.

The following is a yearly plan for Mathematics. The plan is divided into twelve units of varying lengths.

Here is the basis for this year’s math units.

The majority of math instruction will take place in a workshop-style format. Students will practice concepts through games that encourage and strengthen learning. Students will work independently, with partners, or in small groups, allowing us time to conduct guided math groups.

New concepts will be introduced through a group activity and teacher demonstration. Students will then have an opportunity to practice the skill/concept through a guided session before working independently, with a partner, or with a small group.

HOME READING PROGRAMYour child will be asked to read a book to you or another adult each evening. This book will be chosen by your child from a bag of books kept in his or her desk and should be at his or her own reading level. You will be asked to sit with him or her and offer support as he/she reads. You will also be asked to record the name of the book in a Read-At-Home Booklet which has already begun going back and forth. The Read-At-Home Booklet can be found inside your child’s Message Bag.
