Carling Technologies Multiplex SolutionsCarling Technologies is an industry leader, specializing in highly reliablesolutions for your multiplexing system applications. We provide expertise inthe mechanical, electronic and software development required for a total-vehicle-automation solution. All standard and custom components meet orexceed IEC and SAE mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic requirements.

What Is Multiplexing?Multiplexing is sending simultaneous multiple parallel digital signals orstreams of information on a carrier, in the form of a single, complex signal, and then recovering those separate signals at the receiving end. CAN bushas become the accepted standard for vehicle-multiplexed systems. CarlingTechnologies is experienced with the variations of CAN Bus protocol —J1939, ISO Bus 11783 and LIN bus — and we will develop the optimalsystem based on your specific needs.

In analog transmission, signals are commonly multiplexed using frequency-division multiplexing, in which the carrier bandwidth is divided intosub-channels of different frequency widths — each carrying identical parallelsignals. In digital transmission, signals are commonly multiplexed usingtime-division multiplexing, in which the multiple signals are carried over thesame channel in alternating time slots.

Benefits of Multiplexed Power Management• Minimizes overall weight by reducing wire size, length and complexity• Eliminates auxiliary components, including flashers and timers• Eliminates conventional fuse boxes, circuit breakers and relays• Simplifies diagnostics• Increases reliability• Manages loads — individual load voltage, current monitoring and reporting• Provides preventive maintenance capability for inductive loads,

It includes remote circuit reset and is offeredwith custom power management capabilities to increase battery life. The MPMM is flexible and includes programmable configurations.Software updates are easy to install, and single point of service canbe completed from a PC or from within the cab. Circuit characteristicsof the MPMM allow the operator to track current usage, shut downabnormal current usage, track load shedding, and handle inrushcurrent up to 90A. The MPMM greatly reduces switch panel wiringand simplifies the wire harness, while eliminating the fuse block, relaysand relay driver modules.

The MPMM includes eight discrete inputs, which can be used aslogic level inputs, switch level inputs (up to the supply voltage) analoginputs, or timer/counter inputs for RRM measurements.

Glossary of Terms

Analog SignalAn analog signal is one in which a basecarrier’s alternating current frequency ismodified in some way, such as by amplify-ing the strength of the signal or varyingthe frequency, in order to add informationto the signal. Broadcast and telephonetransmission have conventionally usedanalog technology.

CAN – Controller Area NetworkController Area Network (CAN or CAN-bus) is a computer network protocol andbus standard designed to allow microcon-trollers and devices to communicate witheach other without a host computer.

Digital TransmissionDigital transmission describes electronictechnology that generates, stores andprocesses data in terms of two states: posi-tive and non-positive. Positive is expressedor represented by the number 1 and non-positive by the number 0. Thus, data trans-mitted or stored with digital technology isexpressed as a string of 0’s and 1’s. Each ofthese state digits is referred to as a bit(and a string of bits that a computer canaddress individually as a group is a byte).

ECBElectronic circuit breaker

Electromagnetic InterferenceElectromagnetic interference (or EMI, alsocalled radio frequency interference or RFI)is a (usually undesirable) disturbance thataffects an electrical circuit due to electro-magnetic radiation emitted from an externalsource. The disturbance may interrupt, obstruct, or otherwise degrade or limitthe effective performance of the circuit. The source may be any object, artificial ornatural, that carries rapidly changingelectrical currents, such as an electricalcircuit, the sun or the northern lights.

FDM (Frequency-Division Multiplexing)Frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) is a

scheme in which numerous signals are

combined for transmission on a single

communications line or channel. Each sig-

nal is assigned a different frequency (sub

channel) within the main channel.

GatewayA gateway is a network point that acts asan entrance to another network.

GPS (Global Positioning System)The Global Positioning System (GPS) is theonly fully functional Global NavigationSatellite System (GNSS). Utilizing a constel-lation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbitsatellites that transmit precise microwavesignals, the system enables a GPS receiverto determine its location, speed, direction, and time.

HVACHeating, ventilating, and air conditioning

InternationalElectrotechnical CommissionThe International ElectrotechnicalCommission (IEC) is a not-for-profit,non-governmental international standardsorganization that prepares and publishesInternational Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies –collectively known as “electrotechnology.”

ISO 11783ISO 11783 (or ISO Bus or ISOBUS) is acommunication protocol based on the SAEJ1939 protocol (which includes CAN bus)for the agriculture industry. It is managedby the ISOBUS group in VDMA.

LIN-BusThe LIN-Bus (Local Interconnect Network)is a computer networking bus system usedwithin current automotive network archi-tectures. The LIN bus is a small and slownetwork system that is used as a low costsub-network of a CAN bus to integrateintelligent sensor devices or actuators intoday’s cars. Recently LIN may be usedalso over the vehicle’s battery power-linewith a special DC-LIN transceiver.
