FeaturesThe RM-VL600T Remote Commander provides centralised control of allyour AV components from a single remote commander and saves thetrouble of operating different AV components with different remotecontrol devices. The following are its main features.

Centralised control of Sony AV components with this one remotecommanderThis Commander is preset at the factory to operate Sony brandcomponents, so you can use it out of the box as a control centre for yourSony AV components.

Remote control signals for non-Sony components are also presetThis Commander is preset for most major brands components as well asSony. You can remote control your non-Sony components by setting thetype and code number of each component (page 10).

Learning function for programming various other remote controlsignalsThis Commander has a Learning function, to “learn” the remote controlsignals needed to operate other non-preset components or functions. (To“teach” such signals to this Commander, use the remote control suppliedwith the non-preset components.) (page 16)In addition, the Commander can “learn” remote control signals (infraredsignals only) of non-Audio Visual components such as air-conditioners,lights, etc. (Some specific appliances or functions may not be available.)(page 24)

Reassigning new componentsYou can assign Component Select buttons to freely operate othercomponents. This is useful when you have more than two of the samekind of AV component (only if a Component Select button is free.) Getting Started

Installing theBatteriesSlide open the batterycompartment lid and insert twoR6 (size AA) batteries (notsupplied). Be sure to match up the+ and – indications on thebatteries with the + and –indications on the batterycompartment.

When to replace thebatteries

Batteries for remote controloperation (two R6 (size AA)batteries)Under normal conditions, thebatteries will last up to sixmonths. If the Commander doesnot operate properly, the batteriesmight be drained. When thishappens, replace the batteries withnew ones.

NoteDo not take more than one hour toreplace the batteries. Otherwise, yourcode number settings (page 10) and“learned” remote control signals (page16) will be erased.

Notes on batteries• Do not use an old battery with a new

one, or mix different types ofbatteries together.

• If the electrolyte inside the batteryshould leak, wipe the contaminatedarea of the battery compartment witha cloth and replace the old batterieswith new ones. To prevent electrolytefrom leaking, remove the batteries ifyou plan not to use the Commanderfor a long period of time.

Insert the batteries (negative endfirst) through the guide clampwithin each compartment asshown above.

Setting the Code fornon-Sony PresetAudio and VisualComponents— Settingcomponent codesThe Commander is preset at thefactory to operate Sony brand AVcomponents (see the table below).If you are using the Commanderwith a factory-set Sonycomponents, skip the followingprocedures.You can use the Commander withother major brand preset AVcomponents also. To use withother AV components, or Sonycomponents which do notfunction with the Commander,you need to follow the proceduresto set the correct codes for eachcomponent.

number that is not on the table in thesupplied “Component codenumbers,” or if you press a button inthe wrong order, the ComponentSelect button flashes five times, andthen turns off. Check the componentcode number, and try setting it again.

• If you do not input anything into theCommander within 20 secondsbetween each step, the setupprocedure will be cancelled. To set thecode, start over from Step 2.

• If you press SET while setting thecomponent code, all code numbers willbe lost, and the setup procedure willbe cancelled. Start over from Step 2.

Checking if the codenumber works

1 Power on the componentwith its power switch.

2 Press the correspondingComponent Select buttonfor the component youhave set up.The Component Select buttonlights up when you press it,and turns off when you releaseit.

3 Aim the Commander at thecomponent and press 1.The selected Component Selectbutton lights up when youpress a function button, andturns off when you release it.

The component should poweroff.

4 If you have succeeded,check that the Commanderis operating the otherfunctions of yourcomponent, such asprogramme and volumecontrol.See page 14 for details.

If the Commander does notseem to be workingTry repeating the setup procedureusing the other codes listed for yourcomponent, or try setting the codenumber using the Search function(page 13).

Note on the 2 +/– and %buttonsWhen you operate a visualcomponent, the TV button lightsup to indicate that theCommander is controlling ormuting the TV’s volume.

When you operate an audiocomponent, the AMP button lightsup to indicate that theCommander is controlling ormuting the amplifier’s volume.

It is recommended that you firstset the TV and AMP codes beforesetting up any other components.

Note on buttons that havealready “learned” remotecontrol signalsIf another signal has already beenprogrammed on a button usingthe Learning function (page 16),that “learned” signal will continueto work even after you set thecomponent code number. To use itas a preset function button, youmust first erase its “learned”signal (page 22).

To control the volumePress 2 +/– to control thevolume. Press % to mute thesound.When you select a visualcomponent, the TV’s volume willbe controlled (TV ComponentSelect button lights up), and whenyou select an audio component,the amplifier’s volume will becontrolled (AMP ComponentSelect button lights up). You canchange this setting (page 25).

Notes• If you used the Learning function

(page 16) to programme the 2 +/–or % button to send a signal to anyother component, that signal will betransmitted instead of the volume ormuting of the TV or amplifier whenyou select that component.

• If you used the Learning function(page 16) to programme the 2 +/–or % button for the TV or AMPbuttons to send a signal to any othercomponent, that signal will betransmitted only when you select TVor AMP. When you select anothercomponent, the preset volume controlsignals for TV or AMP will betransmitted.

• If you have assigned anothercomponent to the TV or AMP buttons(page 33), the volume of the TV oramplifier cannot be controlled even ifyou select another component.

Programming Signalsof Another RemoteControl — LearningFunctionTo operate components orfunctions which do not work evenif you set a component codenumber, use the followingLearning procedure to “teach” anyof the programmable buttons ofthe Commander to operate thefunctions of another remotecontrol. You can also use theLearning function to change thesignals of individual buttons aftersetting the component codenumber (page 10). It isrecommended that you make anote of the “learned” keyfunctions. (It is possible to make anote on the back of the supplied“Component code numbers.”)

may not be “learned.”• You can also use a display monitor

for computer display (including abuilt-in tuner type), if theCommander is “learned.”

If the Commander does notseem to be workingIf the “learned” button does notoperate properly, “teach” once again.(For example, if the volume becomesvery loud after pressing 2 + onlyonce, noise may have interfered duringthe Learning procedure.)

If you set a component codeafter “learning” a signalIf you have programmed any signal ona button by the Learning function, thatsignal will work even after you set acomponent code.

Note on the REC z signalYou can only “teach” to one button at atime. Therefore you cannot teach asequential button operation (forexample REC z + B) to a single buttonon the Commander. In this case,“teach” the functions of each button onyour component to the Commander.

When you “teach” signals to 2+/– or %•If you used the Learning

function to programme the 2 +/– or % buttons to send anysignal to components other thanthe TV or AMP, that signal willbe transmitted only by pressing2 +/– or % when you selectthat component.

•If you used the Learningfunction to programme the 2 +/– or % buttons to send anysignal to the TV or AMP, thatsignal will be transmitted onlyafter you select TV or AMP.When you select othercomponents, the “learned”signal will be transmitted.

To “teach” the signals for anair-conditionerSee “Notes on programming thesignals for an air-conditioner” onpage 24.

For accurate Learning•Do not move the remote units

during the Learning procedure.•Be sure to keep holding down

the “learning” button until yourCommander reacts as described.

•Use fresh batteries in bothremote units.

•Avoid Learning in places subjectto direct sunlight or a strongfluorescent light. (Noise mayinterfere during the Learningprocedure.)

•The remote control detector areamay differ depending on eachremote unit. If Learning does notwork, try changing the positionsof the two remote control units.

•When you teach signals of aninteractive signal exchangesystem remote control unit(supplied with some of Sony’samplifiers) to the Commander,the response signal of the mainunit may interfere with thelearning of the Commander. Insuch a case, move to a placewhere the signals will not reachthe main unit (e.g. other rooms,etc.).

IMPORTANTBe sure to place theCommander out of the reach ofsmall children or pets, and lockthe controls using the Holdfunction (page 34).Components such as air -conditioners, heaters, electricappliances, and electricshutters or curtains receivingan infrared signal can bedangerous if misused.

2 Press and hold theComponent Select buttonfor the component whosesignals are to be “learned”for over 3 seconds.

To teach signals to the SYSTEMCONTROL buttons, press andhold the desired SYSTEMCONTROL button for over 3seconds.

Both the SET indicator and theselected Component Selectbutton light up.

When you “teach” signals tothe SYSTEM CONTROLbuttons, only the SET indicatorlights up.

When the SET indicator lightsup, you can release theComponent Select button. TheSET indicator flashes and theselected Component Selectbutton lights up (Learningfunction standby).

When you “teach” signals tothe SYSTEM CONTROLbuttons, you can release theSYSTEM CONTROL buttonwhen the SET indicator lightsup. The SET indicator lightsup, but the SYSTEMCONTROL button does notlight up.

Programming remotecontrol signals to theComponent Select buttonsand System Controlbuttons

You can “teach” one operatingprocedure to a Component Selectbutton and System Controlbuttons, so that when you pressthe Component Select button andSystem Control buttons, theoperation is also automaticallydone.For example, if it is necessary toswitch the input selection of anamplifier to DVD when you use aDVD player, “teach” an inputselect signal to the DVD button.After “learning,” the inputselection of an amplifier isautomatically switched to DVDjust by pressing DVD. (For thisoperation, the amplifier shouldfirst be turned on.)

Example: To “teach” the DVDinput remote control signal ofyour amplifier to the DVDComponent Select button of theCommander

TroubleshootingIf you have problems setting up or using the Remote Commander, firstcheck the batteries (page 8), then check the items below.

Remedy• Move closer to the component. The maximum operating

distance is approximately 10 m. (32.8 ft).• Check that you are aiming the Commander directly at the

component, and that there are no obstructions between theCommander and the component.

• Power on the components first, if necessary.• Make sure you have pressed the correct Component Select

button. In case of MD or DAT, make sure the desiredcomponent is selected.

• Check that the component has infrared remote capability. Forexample, if your component did not come with a remotecommander, it probably is not capable of being controlled bya remote commander.

• You have assigned a different component to the ComponentSelect button. Check the component assigned to that buttonand the component code.

• If your visual components are connected to an audio system,make sure you have set up the Commander as described in“Controlling the Volume of Visual Components Connected toan Audio System” (page 25).

• You have assigned another component on the TV or AMPbutton (page 33). In this case, the volume cannot be controlledwhen you select components other than a TV or AMP.

• Batteries are weakened.Replace them with new ones.

• Set the component code correctly. If the code that is listed firstfor your component does not work, try all the codes for yourcomponent in the order in which they are listed in thesupplied “Component code numbers.”

• Some features may not be preset. If some or all of the buttonsdo not function correctly even after you have set thecomponent codes, then use the Learning function toprogramme the remote control signals for the component(page 16).

• The component may be operated with a code number that isnot listed in the “Component code numbers.” See “Setting aComponent Code by the Search Function” (page 13) and trysetting a code number again with the Search function.

• When you teach signals of an interactive signal exchangesystem remote control unit (supplied with some of Sony’samplifiers) to the Commander, the response signal of themain unit may interfere with the learning of the Commander.In such a case, move to a place where the signals will notreach the main unit (e.g., another room, etc.).

• Make sure that the Remote Commander has “learned” thecorrect signals. If not, see “For accurate Learning” (page 19)and try the Learning procedure again (page 16).

• A Learning function has already been set on the ComponentSelect button. If a Learning function has been set (page 16),you can programme the Power-On function on theComponent Select button (page 27) but the Power-On settingwill not work until you clear the “learned” function. Erase the“learned” function after setting the Power-On function.This function is for Sony components only.

• When you programme a System Control function or ControlProgramme function, make sure to follow the correct steps(pages 29, 32).

• Change the direction the Remote Commander is aimed. If theproblem persists, position the programmed componentscloser together.

• If the remote control receivers of the components are too farapart, or if something is blocking the signals between them,some of the components may not operate in sequence evenafter you press the programmed button. If some of thecomponents do not operate correctly because of the above orany other reason, position the components back to the waythey were before you set the System Control function orControl Programme function. Failure to do this can result inincorrect operation when you use these functions again.

• Some components may not always be powered on by theSystem Control function or Control Programme function.This is because the power of the component turns on and offalternately when receiving the power on/off signal. In thiscase, check the operating component‘s power on/off statebefore using the System Control function.

• If you change the AV brands‘ component code number (page10) set on a Component Select button that has beenprogrammed for a series of commands by the ControlProgramme function, the new signal will be transmittedwhen you press the corresponding Component Select button.

• The intervals between steps may be too short. Depending onthe components, you may need to insert an interval betweenconsecutive controls. You can insert an interval by changingthe order of pressing the buttons. (You can insert an intervalbetween steps when programming the Component Selectbutton.)

• If a SYSTEM CONTROL button or a Component Select buttonhas already “learned” a remote control signal (page 16), youcan programme a System Control function (System ControlMacro) or a Control Programme function (ComponentMacro), but the function will not work until you clear theLearned function. To clear the Learned function, see“Changing or erasing the function of a “learned” button” onpage 22.

Installation des pilesOuvrez le couvercle ducompartiment des piles et insérezdeux piles R6 (taille AA) (nonfournies). Veillez à fairecorrespondre les indications + et –des piles avec les indications + et –indiquées dans le compartiment.

Quand faut-il remplacer lespiles ?

En cas de fonctionnement surpiles (deux piles alcalines R6(taille AA))Dans des conditions normalesd’utilisation, les piles durentjusqu’à 6 mois. Si latélécommande ne fonctionne pascorrectement, les piles sont sansdoute usées. Dans ce cas,remplacez-les par des neuves.

RemarqueN’attendez pas plus d’une heure avantde remplacer les piles. Sinon vosenregistrements de code (page 10) et lessignaux de commande à distancemémorisés (page 16) seront effacés.

Remarques sur les piles• Ne mélangez pas des piles usées et

des piles neuves ou des piles de typesdifférents.

• En cas de fuite de l’électrolyte despiles, essuyez la zone contaminée ducompartiment des piles avec unchiffon et remplacez les piles uséespar des neuves. Pour éviter quel’électrolyte des piles ne fuie, enlevezles piles si vous prévoyez de ne pasutiliser la télécommande pendant uncertain temps.

Insérez les piles dans les rainuresde guidage de chaquecompartiment en commençant parle pole négatif, comme indiqué ci-dessus.

DépannageEn cas de problème concernant le réglage ou l’utilisation de latélécommande, commencez par vérifier les piles (page 8), puis les pointssuivants.

Solution• Rapprochez-vous de l’appareil. La portée maximale est

d’environ 10 m.• Vérifiez que la télécommande est pointée directement vers

l’appareil et qu’aucun obstacle ne se trouve entre latélécommande et l’appareil.

• Mettez d’abord les appareils sous tension, si nécessaire.• Vérifiez que vous avez appuyé sur la touche de sélection

d’appareil adéquate. Dans le cas de MD ou de DAT, vérifiezque l’appareil souhaité est sélectionné.

• Vérifiez que l’appareil est équipé d’un dispositif decommande à distance infrarouge. Par exemple, si votreappareil n’a pas été livré avec une télécommande, il estprobable qu’il ne puisse pas être commandé par unetélécommande.

• Vous avez affecté un appareil différent à la touche desélection d’appareil. Vérifiez l’appareil affecté à cette toucheet le code d’appareil.

• Si vos appareils vidéo sont raccordés à une chaîne audio,assurez-vous que vous avez réglé la télécommande commedécrit dans la section « Contrôle du volume des appareilsvidéo raccordés à une chaîne audio » (page 25).

• Vous avez affecté un autre appareil à la touche TV ou AMP(page 33). Dans ce cas, le volume ne peut pas être contrôléquand vous sélectionnez des appareils autres qu’un téléviseurou un amplificateur.

• Les piles sont faibles.Remplacez-les par des neuves.

• Réglez le code d’appareil correctement. Si le code occupant lapremière place dans la liste des codes de votre appareil nefonctionne pas, essayez tous les autres codes correspondantsà votre appareil dans l’ordre dans lequel ils apparaissent dansla liste « Codes d’appareil » fournie.

• Certaines fonctions peuvent ne pas avoir été préréglées. Sicertaines ou l’ensemble des touches ne fonctionnent pascorrectement, même après avoir enregistré les codesd’appareil, utilisez alors la fonction de mémorisation pourprogrammer les signaux de commande à distance pourl’appareil concerné (page 16).

• Il est possible que l’appareil puisse fonctionner avec un codene se trouvant pas dans la liste « Codes d’appareil ».Reportez-vous à la section « Enregistrement d’un coded’appareil à l’aide de la fonction de recherche » (page 13) etessayez d’enregistrer un nouveau code avec la fonction derecherche.

• Quand vous programmez les signaux d’une télécommande àsystème d’échange de signaux interactif (fournie avec certainsamplificateurs Sony) sur la télécommande, le signal deréponse de l’appareil principal peut interférer avec laprocédure de mémorisation de la télécommande. Dans ce cas,déplacez-la vers un endroit où les signaux n’atteindront pasl’appareil principal (ex. une autre pièce, etc.).

• Les codes d’appareil ne peuvent pas être enregistrés.Reportez-vous à la liste des « Codes d’appareil » fournie etrecommencez le réglage des codes d’appareil (page 10).

• Une touche de sélection d’appareil sélectionnée ou une autretouche contient déjà des signaux de commande à distanceprogrammés à l’aide de la fonction de mémorisation(page 16). Recommencez le réglage après avoir supprimé lessignaux mémorisés (page 22) ou sélectionné une touche surlaquelle aucun signal n’est mémorisé.

• La fonction de verrouillage est activée. Désactivez cettefonction (page 34).

• Une fonction de mémorisation a déjà été enregistrée sur latouche de sélection d’appareil. Si une fonction demémorisation a déjà été enregistrée (page 16), vous pouvezprogrammer la fonction de mise sous tension sur la touche desélection d’appareil (page 27), mais le réglage de mise soustension ne pourra pas être utilisé tant que vous n’aurez paseffacé la fonction mémorisée. Effacez la fonction mémoriséeaprès le réglage, la mise sous tension fonctionne.Cette fonction s’applique aux appareils Sony uniquement.

• Lorsque vous programmez une fonction de contrôle dusystème ou une fonction de programme de contrôle, veillez àsuivre les étapes appropriées (pages 29, 32).

• Changez l’orientation de la télécommande. Si le problèmepersiste, rapprochez les appareils programmés les uns desautres.

• Si les récepteurs de commande à distance des appareils sonttrop éloignés ou si quelque chose bloque les signaux entreeux, certains des appareils risquent de ne pas fonctionnerdans l’ordre, même si vous appuyez sur la toucheprogrammée. Si certains des appareils ne fonctionnent pascorrectement pour la raison mentionnée ci-dessus ou pourune toute autre raison, remettez les appareils dans la positionoù ils se trouvaient avant d’enregistrer la fonction de contrôledu système ou la fonction de programme de contrôle. Sinon,il peut en résulter une opération incorrecte lors de laprochaine utilisation de ces fonctions.

• Certains appareils peuvent ne pas toujours être mis soustension par la fonction de contrôle du système ou la fonctionde programme de contrôle. Cela est dû au fait que l’appareilest mis sous et hors tension lorsqu’il reçoit le signal de misesous tension et hors tension. Dans ce cas, vérifiez l’état demise sous tension/hors tension de l’appareil avant d’utiliserla fonction de contrôle du système.

• Si vous changez le code d’appareil audio/vidéo de marque(page 10) enregistré sur une touche de sélection d’appareil viaune série de commandes à l’aide de la fonction de programmede contrôle, le nouveau signal est transmis lorsque vousappuyez sur la touche de sélection d’appareil correspondante.

• L’intervalle entre les étapes est peut-être trop court. Selon lesappareils, vous pouvez avoir besoin d’insérer un intervalleentre des commandes consécutives. Vous pouvez insérer unintervalle en appuyant sur les touches dans un ordredifférent. (Vous pouvez insérer un intervalle entre les étapeslors de la programmation de la touche de sélectiond’appareil.)

• Si une touche SYSTEM CONTROL ou une touche de sélectiond’appareil a déjà mémorisé un signal de commande àdistance (page 16), vous pouvez programmer une fonction decontrôle (macro d’appareil), mais celle-ci ne pourra pas êtreutilisée tant que vous n’aurez pas effacé la fonctionmémorisée. Pour effacer la fonction mémorisée, reportez-vousà la section « Changement ou effacement de la fonction d’unetouche mémorisée », page 22.
