Executive Summary

This paper addresses Juniper Network’s packet optical and timing solutions provided for mobile networks. This includes discussion of the challenges and trends in the industry, use cases, solutions, our products, and proof points for Juniper’s Mobile Cloud Architecture.

Industry Trends

Mobile networks are facing a shift in infrastructure. Megatrends like the 5G and IOT, delivery of video, increased social networking, and the building up the mega-clouds are changing the way networks are built. IP traffics growth is pushing the envelope: traffic is increasing, but revenue is not. This forces an atomic collision in the networks, where network providers can no longer build separate transport access networks and packet networks. There needs to be one homogeneous solution and central layer of control. Fiber optic transport is getting deeper: fiber access is going beyond the tower into the residential areas. How do we take advantage of this? Also, looking at the fixed mobile conversion side, more things are happening, more organizations are involved. Metro aggregation networks are increasing. There is more at the data center at the tower site, and at the mobile data center.

Customer Challenges

This new network infrastructure is changing our traditional optical networks and our traditional packet networks. Once, there was quite a lot of manual provisioning: people would put orders into the transport organization or orders into the packet organizations, and these would take time. This provisioning time would actually take longer than the need and demand time for the bandwidth. The lack of visibility between the silos in the organization caused many problems: redundancy, wasted effort, and wasted resources. A more open infrastructure allows for faster provisioning of services, automated control, and simple IP optical control.

Juniper Networks Packet Optical Strategy

Juniper Networks packet optical strategy is a full end-to-end architecture. It starts with routing and switching platforms, and goes all the way to the optical core with Juniper Network’s BTI product line. It is focused on Layer 0 to Layer 3, and provides management control at all layers, both at the packet provisioning layer as well as control at the optical layer. It makes sure that the information is exchanged between layers, creating an automated and simplified line. No longer does the network have layers of engineers to configure an optical circuit. There is no need for a large-scale IT infrastructure to provide these services.

Integration Versus Disaggregation

When it comes to building optical networks, two approaches can be taken. There is the traditional, disaggregated solution with simple, separate optical and packet solutions. In this approach, the link converts the signal from the router to a DWDM signal transported across the network and then demultiplexed at the far end site. Juniper Networks provides this solution through use of our BTI products and an integrated transponder is available through the BTI system. Juniper Networks also provides an integrated solution. Putting the integrated interfaces on the router reduces the additional components provides a higher level of visibility to the packet at the packet layer and reduces the equipment footprint in colocation areas. However, one size does not fit all, and Juniper Networks provides mix-and-match solutions, or even a hybrid solution with a combination of an integrated solution on one end, and a disaggregated solution on the far end.

Use Case: Packet Optical for Data Center Interconnect

Data Center Interconnect (DCI) is an increasing market for Juniper Networks. The need and demand for large-scale traffic exchange between data centers requires a new look at Juniper Networks optical networking. The complex optical networks in place in long-haul systems do not often have large enough pipes. More importantly, as speed increases and moves from 10G to 40G to 100G – and now to 200G and beyond – support is required for faster services. The BTI7800 platform is capable of providing multiple 200G links between locations, providing the high-level control to interact with the switches and the routers in the data center, and provide information to the common management platforms for these data centers.

Use Case: Packet Optical for Mobile Backhaul

Optical is an increasing part of the entire mobile backhaul (MBH) solution. If a network operator has a common optical solution with the routers and switches, then the operator can provide and build a seamless system all the way from the tower site back into the data center. Juniper Networks MX platforms, ACX platforms, PTX platforms (along with BTI as an optical layer) provide a complete solution. One of the best timing solutions on the market is integrated in the MX and ACX platforms, providing both phase and frequency synchronization for a complete end-to-end mobile solution, and doing so more efficiently. A common management solution provides the automation needed to be able to scale to 5G networks and beyond.

Solution: Integrated Packet Optical

Juniper Networks optical solutions span all product lines, from the PTX series of large core routers to our MX series. These products offer both 10 and 40G interfaces directly in the router. The PTX series also offers integrated mux and demux capabilities, as well as an amplifier solution for a self-contained network. The BTI series consists of the 7000s and 7800 series, providing multi-rate transponders below 10G, 10G transponders, 100G transponders, and now 200G transponders, including the multiplexing equipment and multi-degree remotely operated add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). There is also a complete management system to manage and design your optical systems. These management solutions all communicate with the provisioning systems (the CSD provisioning platform) used for the routing systems to provision services and look at the health of the network. They also communicate with the Juniper Networks NorthStar controller to take the information from both the optical layer and the packet layer, optimize the network, and provide the best use of valuable resources on the network. NorthStar also evaluates contention and ensures delivery of services and the service level agreements (SLAs) required.

Solution: Integrated Timing

Juniper Networks has one of the best timing solutions on the market. As you move to LTE-A and into 5G, accurate phase synchronization and latency are key. The ability to employ phase synchronization closer to the cell towers is more and more of a requirement. Deliverables such as video and other features like the CoMP and the inter-site CA, geolocation – all these services require an accurate timing solution. The next generation of interfaces is going to put new demands on the metro network for scaling and accurate timing. The ability of platforms to deliver low latency is the key to success when moving to 5G and beyond.

Solution: Personalized Subscriber Services

Juniper Networks MX routers are a key part of solutions involving Gi-LAN solutions or service gateways. The MX Series router sits at the heart of these networks and provides the deep packet inspection needed to analyze packets coming into the data center and the redirection required by the solution. Operators now have the ability to offer additional solutions. One example is parental control over their children’s cell phones, where they can roam, times of use, and other limitations. This is accomplished by creating a service chain through the solution with the MX Series router as the key. The MX Series router is a full-featured router with interface speeds from DS-1 to 100G Ethernet. With additional services modules, the MX Series router can provide packet interface solutions, features like CGNAT, and any other subscriber management solutions required on the wireline side of the system.

Products: Comprehensive Routing Portfolio

Juniper Networks products range from the small to the very large, and include both hardened and non-hardened products. The ACX series is an ideal platform for location all the way from the tower to the aggregation location. The MX Series router sits at the edge, and the PTX Series router at the core. These products offer speeds all the way from DS-1 to 100G Ethernet, with developments into 400G and beyond. The modular designs and redundancy are field-proven, have been in the industry for years, and are the performance leader in many service provider networks.

Juniper Networks offers a full array of services to build, plan, and operate networks. These services are key to being able to install new technologies, as well as providing the automation, assessments, and designs. They can also look at the optimization on the network and provide maintenance services. Juniper Networks can offer everything from education to on-site consulting, resident engineers, and spare parts and maintenance programs. Juniper Networks services are key to successful deployment of any of these products, especially as we move into automation and virtual solutions.

Proof Points

Juniper Network is committed to optical networking. The recent acquisition of the BTI Systems expands the market into data center interconnect as well as both aggregated and disaggregated solutions. Juniper Networks recently made investments into silicon photonics and is developing higher-speed interfaces, more integrated solutions, and making optical networking and routed networks easier for the operator to provide.

Integrated Packet, Optical, and Timing Solutions Within Juniper’s Mobile Cloud Architecture

Here is Juniper Networks’ selection of integrated packet, optical, and timing solutions. If you look at the products involved, the ACX Series, MX Series, and PTX series products are key for the routed side, while the BTI Series is for aggregated optical networking. Just as important is the management system, which consists of the proNX management system, Junos Space, and NorthStar.

Together, these control the networks as one, seamless, end-to-end optical network. This suite fits well in the access and aggregation network, the core network, as well as the Internet roaming network.
