Songs and Music

Cardinal Directions (sing to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”) If you like the oceans best, Travel east or travel west. If you like the cold and snow, North is the way you should go. If you like the hot, hot sun, Head down south for lots of fun.

Websites for Students

BrainPOP Jr.This website is an interactive design for students to use, and some features includes movies, quizzes, games, and activity pages. For teachers, it includes lesson plan ideas and the accompanying materials. It is aligned to GLCEs and covers all content areas. While there is free content available most of the website requires a paid membership for use. This website is specifically designed for grades K-3.

Cardinal DirectionsThis website is fun and interactive for students to explore. The activity will teach the students what the cardinal directions are, show them how to use the cardinal directions with a map to describe the relative location of significant places in the immediate environment, provide a review quiz over the mnemonic device (Never Eat Soggy Waffles), provide a quiz using cities on a map (their example is AZ but you could modify it for MI), emphasis on why cardinal directions are important, and it provides a follow up activity to use in the classroom.

Online Resources for Teachers

Cardinal Direction Mnemonics with 3rd GradersThis website contains an activity in which each student will create their own mnemonic device to help them remember the cardinal direction, and construct a visual representation to hang in the classroom. By having the students create their own mnemonic device this will make it more meaningful to them. This activity is directly aligned to the third grade Common Core State Standard on cardinal directions, which is equivalent to the GLCE version.

Digging into the PastThe Calhoun ISD Collaborative Social Studies Curriculum is a great resource for grades K-12. In their 3rd grade section, the unit ‘Digging into the Past’ contains Lesson 1, which is called ‘Cardinal and Intermediate Directions’. This lesson is directly aligned with the GLCE and it includes accompanying resources such as maps, songs, and activities.
