What is Integrated Library System

(ILS)?

Page 3: Integrated Library Systems

INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYTEMS

OAn Integrated Library System (ILS), also known as a Library Management System (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed.

Page 4: Integrated Library Systems

INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYTEMS

OAn Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) is an automated package of library services that contains several functions. These functional usually include circulation, acquisitions and cataloguing etc.

Page 5: Integrated Library Systems

INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYTEMS

OAn ILS usually comprises a relational database, software to interact with that database, and two graphical user interfaces (one for patrons, one for staff). Most ILSes separate software functions into discrete programs called modules, each of them integrated with a unified interface.

OA relational database is a digital database whose organization is based on the relational model of data, as proposed by E. F. Codd in 1970. The various software systems used to maintain relational databases are known as a relational database management system (RDBMS). Virtually all relational database systems use SQL(Structured Query Language) as the language for querying and maintaining the database.

INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYTEMS

OEach patron and item has a unique ID in the database that allows the ILS to track its activity.

OLarger libraries use an ILS to order and acquire, receive and invoice, catalog, circulate, track and shelve materials. Smaller libraries, such as those in private homes or non-profit organizations (like churches or synagogues, for instance), often forgo the expense and maintenance required to run an ILS, and instead use a library computer system.

Page 8: Integrated Library Systems

OGeneral information retrieval systems have become more advanced. Search engines such as Google and online sellers such as Amazon have created user-friendly interactive systems which appear more attractive to users. Library communities are also making efforts to develop more sophisticated, user-friendly systems equipped with a federated search engines.

INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYTEMS

Page 9: Integrated Library Systems

OA federated search engine can retrieve information from multiple subscription based databases (deep web), library holdings, and general web sources with one search query. Library communities are also increasingly looking into open source programs.

HISTORY

Page 11: Integrated Library Systems

HISTORYO Integrated library systems (ILS) were often

known as library automation systems or automated systems in the 1970s and early 1980s.

OBefore the advent of computers, libraries usually used a card catalog to index its holdings.

OComputers were used to automate the card catalog, thus the term automation system.

Page 12: Integrated Library Systems

OAutomation of the catalog saves the labor involved in resorting the card catalog, keeping it up-to-date with respect to the collection, etc.

OOther tasks automated include checking out and checking in books, generating statistics and reports, acquisitions and subscriptions, indexing journal articles and linking to them, as well as tracking interlibrary loans.

HISTORY

Page 13: Integrated Library Systems

OSince the late 1980s, windows and multi-tasking have allowed business functions to be integrated. Instead of having to open up separate applications, library staff could use a single application with multiple functional modules.

HISTORY

Page 14: Integrated Library Systems

OAs the Internet grew, ILS vendors offered more functionality related to the Internet. Major ILS systems now offer web-based portals where library users can log in to view their account, renew their books, and be authenticated to use online databases.

LIBRARY COMPUTER SYSTEM

OA LIBRARY COMPUTER SYSTEM is the software used to catalog, track circulation (where appropriate) and inventory a library's assets. It is intended for home, church, private enterprise or other small to medium sized collections. Larger libraries will typically use an integrated library system to manage the more complex activities such as acquisitions and the reference interview.

SOFTWARE CRITERIA

Page 18: Integrated Library Systems

Distributed software vs. web serviceOLibrary computer systems tend to fall into two offerings: software to be purchased on a perpetual license or purchased as a subscription service.

SOFTWARE CRITERIA

Page 19: Integrated Library Systems

OWith distributed software, the customer can choose to self install or have the system installed by the vendor on their own hardware and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the application and the data or can choose to be supported by the vendor with an annual maintenance contract.

SOFTWARE CRITERIA

Page 20: Integrated Library Systems

OSome vendors charge for upgrades to the software, and some do not. Customers who subscribe to a hosted service upload data to the vendor's remote server via the Internet and may pay a periodic fee to access their data.

SOFTWARE CRITERIA

Page 21: Integrated Library Systems

Data entry assistance based on ISBNOMany applications can reduce a major portion of manual data entry by populating data fields based upon the entered ISBN using MARC standards technology via the Internet.

SOFTWARE CRITERIA

Page 22: Integrated Library Systems

Barcode scanning and printingOWith most any software, users can eliminate some manual entry by using a barcode scanner. But some software is designed, or can be extended with an additional module, to integrate scanner functionality. While most software vendor provide some type of scanner integration, not all will print labels with barcodes.

What is an OPEN SOURCE

SOFTWARE?

Page 24: Integrated Library Systems

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES

OOpen source softwares are developed for the goodness of the community and ownership rest with public. Openness and cooperation in all stages of software development expands opportunity for collaborative work. So professionals and users attracted to open source software projects and make use their spare time for creative contribution.

Page 25: Integrated Library Systems

OOpen source ILS is a free alternative to proprietary integrated library management system. Libraries can obtain open source software freely and can use for the automation purposes.

OOpen source software’s are available with source code and if necessary libraries can make changes in software.

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES

Page 26: Integrated Library Systems

WHY IS IT SIGNIFICANT?

Page 27: Integrated Library Systems

OMain attraction of open source ILS is t hat it charges no license fee.

OInvesting in a proprietary library ILS is a never ending process. In addition to huge initial investment, libraries are compelled to shell out money to retain the ILS service. Purchase of a proprietary ILS does not mean that library have full control over the software.

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES

Page 28: Integrated Library Systems

OOwnership of the software will rest with the company and libraries should be continuing as mere users. If libraries dare to stop the service of commercial ILS, they will face the severe consequences including loss of control over bibliographic data.

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES

Page 29: Integrated Library Systems

OIn such cases companies may charge a good amount to give bibliographic records back to libraries.

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARES

Page 30: Integrated Library Systems

WHAT ARE THE

DOWNSIDES?

Page 31: Integrated Library Systems

OEven though open source ILS are available free, it is not ready to use. Many features in ILS are generalist and must be either customized before use or adjusted with existing features.

OOpen source ILS available with standardized features majority of libraries required.

EVERGREENOEvergreen is an open source,

consortial-quality Integrated Library System (ILS), initially developed by the Georgia Public Library Service for PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services), a statewide direct-lending consortium with over 270 member libraries.

Page 34: Integrated Library Systems

OEvergreen development began in 2004, when GPLS determined that no available ILS software could meet the needs of PINES. Evergreen 1.0 went live in September, 2006.

EVERGREEN

Page 35: Integrated Library Systems

O The Evergreen ILS is being used worldwide. Beyond PINES, organizations with live Evergreen implementations include SITKA a library consortium in British Columbia; the Indiana Open Source ILS Initiative; the Michigan Library Consortium; as well as smaller libraries such as Kent County Public Library in Maryland and Marshall Public Library in Marshall, Missouri. Other organizations committed to Evergreen include Project Conifer in Ontario, Canada.

EVERGREEN

Page 36: Integrated Library Systems

OThe original core developers of Evergreen have formed a commercial company around the software, Equinox Software which provides custom support, development, migration, training, and consultation for Evergreen.
