Objective Look at alternative ways of presenting mathematics to
students which involve multi media to enhance learning for
the digital native or e generation.

Why Multi Media? Why Digital Education?
“Technology has always been an important factor for education, but the
rapid development of Internet and digital technology over the past decade
is changing more than just the equipment used in the classroom:
kids' learning styles and school behavior are constantly being shaped
by the growing presence of the Internet”. Marc Prenksy www.digitalnative.org
What? Who?
What is multi media?
In general, multimedia includes a combination of different content forms such as text, audio, still images, animation, video, and
interactivity.
Multimedia can recorded and played, displayed or accessed by
computerized and electronic devices and can also be part of a
live performance. Wikipedia
Who are we teaching?
A. The students who are truly self-motivated.
B. The students who go through the motions.
C. The students who “tune us out.” The motto of this group? “Engage me or Enrage me”
Rules of AcademicEngagement
1. Create a rewarding learning environment – make learning a social event
2. Put your students in charge of their learning
3. Specify your expectations
4. Provide early, rapid and continuous feedback

What is Cognitive Theory in Multi Media Learning?
Professor Richard Mayer has shown learners are better able to transfer their learning given multimodal instruction

What is multi media learning and how can it foster learning?
1. Modality principle:
+
Students learn better from animation and narration than from animation, narration, and on-screen text“(Mayer, 2001,p.184)
2.The Redundancy Principle Limited Capacity Assumption
Where do your eyes focus during this?

To Show Geometrically That (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
(a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
We are going to show geometrically that (a+b)2 = a2 +2ab + b2
The area of the first piece is a2
Split your square into four piecesThe area of the third piece is also abThe last piece is b2Let’s start off with a square with side a +b
The area of the second piece is ab
Use few words to summarise than many extraneous words and pictures.
3. Active Processing Assumption

Multi Media
Richard Mayer defines multimedia as any environment where material is presented in more than one format

1. Basic Functions
Pen, writing, view slide show, saving annotations- saving students’ solutions.
2. Custom AnimationCustom animation- Flash Once / DisappearYou can make object appear to be moving using this custom animation option
Flash Once
You can make any object to appear to be moving using this custom animation option
Here you entrance flash once. Subsequent moons must start after previous.

You can easily solve this”

I hope you feel inspired to join me on the journey from being a digital immigrant and using minimal multi media in the classroom to adopting and utilising the resources available to fully integrate multi media into the mathematics classroom to enhance the learning for the digital natives.
We have responsibility to engage not enrage our Digital Natives, Generation M our E generation…
