Welcome to issue 70 of InTallaght

Magazine!We are still unsure if

summer has arrived in Ireland, although there was a day or two of sunshine that got our hopes up last week! With the summer festivals getting off to a rainy start (Slane and Forbidden Fruit), we hope that the sun will come out for upcoming Body & Soul, Longitude and all the other festivals taking place in June and July.

Just in case the weather doesn’t pick up, we decided to give you some cheering up by interviewing the wonderful Ian McKellen, famous for his roles as Gandalf in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, and Magneto in X Men. McKellen tells us about his latest role as an ageing and forgetful Sherlock Holmes in Mr Holmes and how at 75, it is something that

concerns him. We also turned our focus

to kickboxing champion Roy Baker who told us all about life since retiring from the sport and how coaching is his favourite thing to do now. Despite competing Irish Kickboxers being ranked fifth in the world, Roy tells us why the sport doesn’t seem to get the recognition in Ireland and how he hopes to change that.

Finally, we have a whole range of reviews from movies to games, books to music, or if you like fiction, check out our Writers’

Corner section, which are submitted by readers just like you. Or if sport is your thing, see our Shamrock Rovers section or our sports features– this issue we have Shane Robinson telling us about kids trials this summer.

We’d love to hear from you, so if you have anything you want to share with the readers of InTallaght Magazine, please get in touch with us by emailing [email protected].

Happy reading,

Genna Patterson

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) have announced the Tallaght Wayfinding Signage project, which is part of the Village Initiative. Tallaght has been chosen to pilot the project and is the first area in South Dublin County to experience the introduction of the Wayfinding signage and panels.

Mayor Fintan Warfield said, “The vision of the project is for South Dublin County’s villages and town centres to become more open and accessible, facilitating walking and cycling, increasing footfall and encouraging social and community encounters and interaction in festivals and performances.”

The Wayfinding signage will include highly visual signs aimed at directing cyclists and pedestrians around the Tallaght area, information and direction to the key heritage interest points in the Village area and information on the main services and points of interest within a five-seven minute walking radius of each map.

The main panels will include a QR code feature that provides links to heritage information as developed by South Dublin Library Services and there will be six map panels at key points in Tallaght Village and Town Centre and a series of finger post signs in the area. As further trails and walks are developed additional panels will be added to encourage people to explore the other amenities in the area such as Tymon Park, Sean Walsh Park and the Dodder Linear Park.

Tallafest15 was launched on June 5th in Molloy’s Pub conservatory and will take place as part of Heritage Week later this summer on August 15th.

This one day festival will run from lunchtime to tea time and will again include free family-friendly outdoor activities.

The festival will primarily be held in The Priory and St Maelruain’s grounds in Tallaght village and will include activities such as kid’s zone, a craft market, history lectures, walks, a sports zone, farm zone, live stage and art and culture zone.

The festival brought 6,000 people to Tallaght last year and will no doubt be a great success again. Tallafest are welcoming businesses and volunteers to get involved in the event.

Fáilte Ireland announced a rise in tourism figures to Dublin so far this year. The news was welcomed by South Dublin County Council (SDCC). Latest CSO figures have recently revealed that the number of trips made to Ireland in the first three months of 2015 is steadily increasing and it’s expected to be a bumper year for Irish tourism.

South Dublin’s chief executive, Daniel McLoughlin said that the local authority has been playing a key role in the promotion of tourism locally and looks forward to growing visitor numbers further through its five year Tourism Strategy launched in April this year.

He said, “The re-development of Rathfarnham Castle, scheduled to reopen in June and planned initiatives in the form of a Dublin Mountains Visitor Centre, the Clondalkin Round Tower Visitor Centre,

the Dodder and Grand Canal Greenways and many other proposals will benefit local businesses and communities.”

SDCC have been working with Fáilte Ireland and their partners locally to promote South Dublin County as a tourism destination and this seems to be paying off with an increase in visitor numbers.

McLoughlin said, “We are also busy working in collaboration with the business community and a network of local and national agencies to further develop our tourism potential. From driving festivals and events like our Red Line Book Festival and our Summer of Heritage Programme that support employment in the region, local government support is also critical to the success of a range of initiatives which support enterprise and economic development at a local level.”

South Dublin County Council is calling for applications for the new Community Initiative Fund 2015. The Council has provided a fund of €170,000 to enable Community Groups to bid for funding support for projects which is not available from other sources.

The initiative is designed to fund or provide an opportunity for access by communities or groups to funds for significant community and cultural or heritage enhancement and neighbourhood projects which they could not start or complete on their own.

Mayor of South Dublin, Councillor Fintan Warfield said, “It was very important that applicants give as much information as possible on their application as applications will be

judged on their merits and on the evidence of strong community support. Grants from €1,000 to €50,000 will be available to support projects.”

He said that applicants will be required to show that they will be able to provide some of their own funding and or volunteerism for a project. Projects which best demonstrate this aspect of the project will be encouraged according to the Mayor.

In addition, for those who require help with their application, the Council’s Community Services Team is available. The closing date for the receipt of applications is close of business (5.00pm) on Friday June 26th, 2015. World-famous for roles like Gandalf and Magneto, actor Sir Ian McKellen has now tackled the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Inspectin Ian

Holmes is not an attractive person – you wouldn’t want to spend any time with him, would you? I wouldn’t.

“”

Ian McKellen has played many famous roles; Magneto in X Men, Gandalf in The Hobbit and Lord

of the Rings and he even had a part on Coronation Street back in 2005 as a con-man. But now the accomplished actor is taking on an entirely new famous face, that of Sherlock Holmes in the movie Mr. Holmes. However, this movie is far from the standard ‘whodunnit’ detective genre, instead it is a reimagined version of Holmes as a real person, based on American author Mitch Cullin’s acclaimed novel A Slight Trick of the Mind.

The Holmes character is an ever-popular one, especially in recent years when he has been revived a number of times. McKellen says, “There have been 150 films [about Holmes], apparently. That’s a lot but it shows that this is a character that people are endlessly fascinated by.” In the story Holmes is a real–rather than fictional–man and his legendary exploits have been chronicled by Dr Watson, who has now passed away, rather than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the actual writer of the fictional characters. The character Sherlock Holmes was first seen in print over 120 years ago, but still resonates with audiences in both print and on screen today, including TV series and movies. McKellen says

popular, despite being over a century old, and it is difficult to say why of all the famous detective characters out there, he interests audiences so much. McKellen sheds some light on the character, “I really don’t know why he endures so well. I mean, he’s not an attractive person – you wouldn’t want to spend any time with him, would you? I wouldn’t. He’d have nothing to say to you, and he wouldn’t be interested in you, unless you were interesting to him. He’s not friendly, he’s not sociable but there is something about him that we are intrigued by.”

In Mr Holmes, McKellan plays a 93-year-old Holmes in 1947, who is struggling to come to terms with early dementia as he tries to recall his last case some thirty years earlier. Living in rural Sussex with his housekeeper, Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her bright young son, Roger (Milo Parker), Holmes spends his retirement tending to his beloved bees and trying to piece together what happened to a missing woman, Ann Kelmot (Hattie Morahan).

Aging Gracefully

“I get to play the standard, the expected, the Conan Doyle, John Watson version, and then this other

that he supposes that the stories are an invention that struck some sort of chord with people. “I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know who Sherlock Holmes was. I don’t remember being introduced to him; he’s always been there… What’s interesting is that he was so clearly a man of his time, but you can remove him from his time and he remains himself.”

Mr Holmes shows the aging detective, long retired, struggling to remember his last case, and essentially, investigating himself, which has never been done before in a Holmes movie. Holmes is reluctantly aided by his housekeeper’s son Roger in uncovering the reason behind the end of his career as a world famous detective. The character is one that continues to be

Page 18: InTallaght EDITION 70

imagined version, which actually turns out to be more real than the traditional,” says McKellen. “The way the film plays with all that, and does it in the style of a Conan Doyle story is what’s clever about it, I think. You could, if you didn’t know anything about it, think, ‘Oh, this is just another Sherlock Holmes story–about a man investigating himself, for the first time.”

McKellen, aged 75, found that the themes of aging and failing memory resonated with him as he played a man slowly losing himself to age. “Yes, well, old age, if you’re 75, is of interest to you,” he says. “Some people never reach it, of course, and I had contemporaries who are dead. Some are struggling towards it with dreadful illnesses, and some people seem to be immortal, and each day is a new blessing.” He says that he thinks of Sherlock Holmes as an old man, coping, and coping better than most. In the movie McKellen plays two versions of Holmes, one in his 60s and one in his early 90s. He spent a long time in the make up chair to play both versions, both younger and older than himself. He says that they needed more make up to make him look 60 than 90 and thinks he had a likeness to John Gielgud, the late English actor and theatre director.

McKellen explains that it was very much the make-up that helped him get into the Holmes frame of mind during shooting. “Although when they put the young make-up on–because I needed more make-up to look 60 than I do to look 93 (laughs) – the process is different.” McKellen agrees that like with the character he plays, that aging can affect memory, and in turn a job as an actor could be made more difficult as a result, with so many lines to remember. He says, “I have good friends who have had to stop, because they can’t remember [their lines], but I’m not one of them (knocks on wood). But of course it’s not just

that – It’s not just mental energy; it’s energy of all sorts. Can you get up in the morning at six o’clock and drive to location? Keep your attention? Not keep falling asleep? (Laughs). What keeps you going is your genes, and the company you’re keeping, really. Going to work with (director) Bill Condon and (actress) Laura Linney, you think, ‘Well, that’s worth getting up for, isn’t it?’”

In fact, McKellen feels that the Holmes character often does a fair bit of acting himself, to play up to the part of the famous detective to an extent. “Well, he has elements of an actor, and he does act. In the novels, the stories, he’s always going into disguise, literally, with false moustaches and wigs, and limps, and accents. But I don’t know whether the style of observation is the same. The difference between him and an actor is that an actor might well observe, and if you were a mimic, you would then be able to copy, but it’s not going to work unless you actually imagine what it’s like to be there. I don’t know whether that’s quite what Sherlock Holmes does.”

McKellen says that where Holmes differs from actors is that he is not very empathetic, and that is what an actor has to be. He explains, “It’s a funny thing; if DNA was a phrase that we all understood… it almost seems to be the most important thing about human beings these days–that we’ve got DNA. I discovered it through my work, that if you walk like somebody,

18 // intallaght magazine

COVER STORY

I needed more make-up to look 60 than I do to look 93 – the process is different.

“” if you copy someone’s walk, you begin to feel what it’s like to be them, and you begin to think like them, and find yourself talking like them, because you’re the same all the way through. It’s just getting the DNA–you might get some little clue, and it might be as little as that, and then you’ll be in there. One day in rehearsal you’ll do something and the director will say, ‘That was right, just when you landed on that word, Ian,’ or ‘When you stood up! Do you remember that? That’s the character.’ And then you’re away.”

Despite Holmes’ apparent lack of empathy and other misgivings, McKellen enjoyed playing him. “I would have quite liked to just play him straight, and to have done a Conan Doyle story, but there’s absolutely no need for that, because there’s been so many of them. Who needs any more Sherlock Holmes? Well, you do, because you want to find out what the real Sherlock Holmes is like. I enjoyed working with Bill Condon again, and working with Laura Linney, and a lot of my friends came to be in the film, which was lovely – Roger Allam (who plays Dr Barrie), for example.”

Another benefit to playing the role was that McKellen was able to live at home in London for most of it, which he says is very unusual when you’re making a film. “Not many films are made in London,

Page 19: InTallaght EDITION 70

IAN MCKELLEN

Page 20: InTallaght EDITION 70

and not in a studio. So there was all that side of it, which was fun. I couldn’t anticipate until I saw the film, actually, how clever it was, dipping in and out of reality, and these things that sound rather boring, but you get involved and it’s actually rather intriguing. It’s all based on the premise that Sherlock Holmes was a real person, which of course he wasn’t (laughs). But don’t you, when you’re seeing this film, think, ‘Well, of course we’re not seeing the real one – McKellen is acting the part – but he is a real person’?”

Roles of Recognition

In terms of playing a role, McKellen often gets recognised for his recurring parts of Gandalf and Magneto, which he says doesn’t bother him too much as their roles are so different from each other that people don’t tend to assume he actually is those characters. “They’re rather respectful, because they think I’m connected with Gandalf and Magneto, and you don’t tangle with either of those two. You don’t make any assumptions of intimacy (laughs).”

Unlike those characters, McKellen says that he is “a very amiable person.” He says, “Sometimes people thank you for doing something and it was nothing, so it’s embarrassing to be thanked. You think, ‘I’d do that for

anybody, it was nothing special.’ This is what life’s about – you never find out who you are, do you? You live with yourself all day long, but you need help to discover who you are, if you ever want to bother discovering who you are. I often don’t recognise myself in other people’s things.”

McKellen is actually quite glad that his Gandalf days are over now, because he says that he has other parts that he’d like to be getting on with. “I had doubts about going back to do The Hobbit. It’s a long period of time, and something I’ve done before. And as much as I enjoyed it when I got there, I wondered whether it was

the right thing. But it wasn’t as simple as, ‘Would you

come and do this?’ There was another director involved, and it was off, then it was on, then it was off again. You began to adjust to the idea of not doing it, but in the end I’m very glad I did. But yes, I think there are other things to do now.”

And with Mr Holmes as

a promising start to that, we support McKellen in his choices, and hope that there will be many

more as good as that.

Mr Holmes is released on June 19th in cinemas nationwide.

INTERVIEW

Padraig Conlon spoke to legendary kick boxer Roy Baker about his past successes and how he enjoys coaching more than anything now he’s retired.

The Real Roy

Former World Champion Kickboxer Roy Baker has been described as one of the most

impressive sportsmen this country has ever produced. In a career that lasted twenty years the Ballyfermot native won over 50 titles and retired in 2002 as champion once again. Since retiring he has devoted his time to coaching and has proved extremely successful in this branch of the sport as well.

He is also the President of Kickboxing Ireland, the Vice President of the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO), Chief Instructor and founder of Bushido Martial Arts and the Operations Manager at energy giant Airtricity. I sat down recently with the man credited with introducing kickboxing to Ireland to find out more about this fast growing sport and the man who has devoted his life to it.

Roy Baker began fighting in the WAKO in 1982. He wasn’t exactly the type of boy one would imagine as a fighter. He explains why, “I was one of these kind and quiet little kids sitting in the corner who always sat there and was unspoken. I found that martial arts made me feel good about me. It’s an individual sport with personal accountability. I found something I was able to grow in,” he says about his first foray into the sport.

Kickboxing would not have been very big in Ireland in the early 80’s, so what was it about the sport that led him to get so involved? He says, “I can tell you definitely what it gave me; the courage to stand up for myself. It gave me the courage to speak

and you come home not only do you get a scholarship but within the scholarship you get credits for being a World or European Champion because they recognise that you’ve dedicated a significant portion of your life for the nation on the basis. They do a lot of stuff in other countries but Ireland doesn’t seem to get that, the model that’s been created by the other countries and federations of sport are recognising the competence an individual has to attain to become a world class athlete.”

I’m curious to know why our country is so against rewarding our champion kickboxers and I ask Roy is it down to good old fashioned ignorance about the sport? He says, “Ignorance is a strong word, I think it’s from having looked at things from a different perspective other societies and national federations have looked at it and seen the benefits that sport itself can drive and if you have some good role models in sport it creates further generations of people coming through and to be an athlete at the top level you have to have dedication, perseverance, intellect, courage, all the things that make you successful

when I needed to speak, it gave me confidence, which I didn’t have before. It gave me an inner belief that I also didn’t have before. It created a circle of friends I’d never had before, so it kind of gave me a better position, it gave me a better understanding of me.”

Once he got going the titles started rolling in. European champion, World Champion, every single honour available was bestowed on the Dubliner. If he had been claiming these titles in any other sport then national recognition for his achievements would be massive. But it wasn’t. I ask him if it’s true that as a nation we have produced more world champions in Kickboxing than in any other sport yet none of these champion athletes would be even close to being household names.

“We have yes,” he says. “We only recognise one world body which is WAKO. We have produced some really amazing athletes like Robbie McMenamy, Martin McDermott, Shauna Bannon. Robbie and Shauna are exceptional athletes, we’ve other people like Elaine Small, Mark McDermott, Robert Hurley. We’re very lucky in Ireland, at the moment we’re ranked fifth in the world. You have to take that into context that the majority of people we compete against are being fully funded. As athletes they get everything paid for and more importantly when the athlete is successful and they come back to their country and they’ve won a medal at the World championships they get a scholarship for two years. In places like Norway if you get a WAKO medal

Page 23: InTallaght EDITION 70

ROY BAKER

in business, in college and in life. When you meet people who have got to that level they’re very competent, capable people and we haven’t got to that point where we are recognising their capability. I think we should in the future. We are hoping with our new model we’ll be able to start funding our athletes. At the moment what Kickboxing Ireland is investing in is its infrastructure. We have to do that to make the foundation right for Kickboxing Ireland and then we have to invest in the athletes–they’re the future, without athletes we’ve nobody.”

Since his retirement Roy has embraced teaching the sport with the same vigour he used to become a champion. He teaches four times a week and travels the world “practically every weekend.” As well as this he manages to maintain his executive role at Airtricity. He says, “I get more enjoyment out of coaching than I do out of anything else in my life including my children. I have a very big club in Leixlip, around 400/450 students. I love teaching, every single one of my staff have been with me since they were five years of age, some of them are in their 30’s now. I hope to continue as long as I can in this sport because it brings a balance into my life.

“I’ve a highly pressurised chief executive role in Airtricity with a lot of financial responsibilities. I don’t do a lot, I just make decisions, but what kickboxing allows me to do is absolutely switch off to teach the children or go in and spar or organise a tournament. It’s a big job, I’ve a couple of thousand staff, it’s an interesting job. I read a lot, I’m a ferocious reader, I read at least two books a week and I like to be active and I like to do things that I enjoy. Where I get my energy is that I’m not doing anything in my life that I don’t want to do.”

I tell him he must have a very strong mind that gives him the ability to concentrate on all his different

roles, but he disagrees. “I wouldn’t call myself strong, I have a phenomenal work ethic, when I was competing if other kickboxers were getting up at 7 I’d be up at 5 in the morning doing what I’m doing. I got [it] from my Dad, for me it’s just keep working hard and at some stage it will happen. It may not happen overnight but hard work will always come through in the end,” he says.

After everything he has achieved in the sport I was surprised that the moment he picked as his favourite didn’t involve him fighting. “The thing that brought me most pleasure was I had five of my own students in the European Finals; Elaine, Darragh, Illijon, Colm and Daniel and that was exceptional,” he says. “For a country to get five people into a finals is amazing but to get them all from one club was exceptional. Then I’ve had some of my juniors winning titles and I have my students winning world and European titles and that is very fulfilling for me. It’s a very different thing being a good coach and a good fighter. Not many people make that transition.”

The WAKO World Championships are coming to Ireland in November, which of course makes Roy very proud. “Yes we’re delighted we’ve got them here in November,” he says. “It’s the second time we’ll have had

them here, the last time was 2011 and it was a huge success, so the 2015 full contact will run from November 22nd to 29th and I’m very excited about that. It’s extraordinary that we’re getting it back here again but we are recognised here in Ireland as being a very experienced event promoter. The Irish Open is now the biggest fighting tournament in the world. It’s great for our country.”

Finally Roy says what it is about martial arts that he loves the most. “It gives you a personal presence and what I mean by that is it gives a confidence and an understanding. Because the martial arts isn’t just about fighting, kickboxing is not about fighting, only 15 to 20% of kick boxers actually compete, most people do it to feel good and feel healthy. It’s one of the sports that’s very, very technical, I’m still learning new things all the time. Every once in a while something new comes along and you just go ‘How the hell did I not think of that?’ For me any martial art really gives you a good grounding.” Roy continues saying that the biggest thing martial arts brings, which no other sport does is discipline. “There’s absolute discipline in a martial arts class. My children do Cub Scouts, they do football, rugby, camogie – all the sports, and I’m not saying they’re not disciplined, the children stand up and learn, they bow, they speak sensai. There’s a culture of discipline with absolutely clear boundaries and there’s not many sports that do that. In martial arts you can be what you want to be whereas in team sports there’s a huge pressure to perform, to be number one, I have a big issue with relying on other people so I never took to team sports.”

With such dedication and commitment it is no surprise that Roy inspires his club to do so well. Hopefully some of his motivation will rub off and kickboxing will receive the recognition it needs in Ireland, once and for all.

june 2015 // 23

I found that martial arts made me feel good about me. It’s an individual sport with personal accountability. I found something I was able to grow in.

The new collection captures everything that is special about this season putting “a tropical spin on summer”. Dreamy Escape takes inspiration from vibrant flora and fauna, from palm trees and leaves to orchids, as well as exotic animals such as snakes, dolphins and sea turtles.

Hand-crafted from sterling silver or 14k gold and embellished with clear and coloured stones, the collection includes charms, leather bracelets, rings, necklaces and pendants in

colours of green and blue. PANDORA has been around since 1982 and is one of the most iconic jewellery brands in the world. With PANDORA jewellery you can create and combine to express your own distinctive style and share your personal story.

The collection comprises genuine, hand-finished jewellery to fit every look and occasion and offers many new and exciting choices for personal creations and stunning combinations.

A surprise for some may be that PANDORA does not just stock the original

charm bracelet it is famous for. There are a number of different pieces to choose from. They have a range of sterling silver necklaces available from their unique necklace concept, which can be layered and dressed up with clips from the charms range, and the patented charms bracelets can be combined with a diversity of charms to create beautiful and personal pieces of jewellery.

PANDORA sterling silver charms start from €19 and sterling silver rings from €39 which make it affordable luxury. Add to that PANDORA’s range of rings and earrings and there really is something for everyone.

Store manager Rosin Carvill tells us about the new summer collection which has just been officially launched, “The New Tropical Summer Collection brings you right back to that tropical paradise holiday that you have been on. You can come in and build your bracelet by putting the memories on your bracelet, maybe its rings? You can stack them. The new collection has loads of vibrant colours as well. We also have leather bracelets not just silver which you might want to use as the casual alternative.”

Check in store today and begin the charm building journey. PANDORA’s store here in The Square Town Centre has a huge range of stock so bring in that wish list and the team will help you match up everything today.

Welcome to the new InProperty

section of InTallaght Magazine. We asked REA McGee Real Estate Alliance to give us the Top cost-effective ‘R’s to improve your house before viewings.

REA’s Antony McGee gives us part one below, check out our next issue for more.

Remove

Change the impression of a room by taking out that extra piece of furniture that has been sitting there for years with no purpose. Now is the perfect time to go through those closets, shelves, garages and cabinets for “stuff” that is beginning to own you, rather than the other way around.

Repaint

It is amazing what a coat of paint can do for a boring table or chair. Country cream or French cream is all the trend at the moment in all the furniture stores. Also repainting your interior walls is a relatively low-cost

solution to updating your interior look, especially if you paint them yourself.

Rearrange

Don’t be afraid to move furniture from one room to another to give it new life. It’s amazing how you learn how to optimise space once you’ve removed everything out of the room and set out to restart with a blank canvas. Change your seating arrangements to either open up a room or to make it cosier. Get rid of anything that does not fit properly and is rarely used.

Reuse

Reuse what you already have–there are so many items around the home that can be ‘recycled’. Have a good look as you may already have the items suited for that chosen style hidden away or simply just being used in the wrong environment. Reuse fabric from sheets and quilts even old clothes to make cushions and curtain tie backs. A fresh group of cushions or a throw can update an old sofa instantly!

Page 38: InTallaght EDITION 70

With the economy picking up again, Colm O’Cochlain from O’Cochlain solicitors gives InTallaght readers some guidelines on how to go about buying a house.

The first thing you need to consider is your budget, how much money can you borrow? What savings have you and what extra costs such as solicitors fees, outlays and Stamp Duty are payable?

The Central Bank brought in new guidelines in January 2015 in respect to house purchases. Purchasers can only borrow 3.5 times their gross salary/salaries. This is also subject to a limit of 90% of the purchase price for properties up to €220,000.00 and 80% thereafter.

If you purchase for €300,000.00 then you can borrow 90% of the first €220,000 and 80% of the balance. That means the purchaser can borrow €264,000.00 and will have to come up with the balance of €36,000.00. So it is vital that you are loan approved for the €264,000.00 and you have savings for the balance.

When applying for a loan a Bank will

take into account the

security of your job, your expenditure and savings. If you have a good savings history and no loans or credit card bills you will be in a good position to get a loan. If you have car loans or other loans you will need to show that you have a good credit history and can afford to continue to pay the loan and mortgage. Interest rates are low but the Banks want to make sure you can pay any extra amounts if rates rise. In the 1980’s interest rates were 15% compared to an average of around 4% now.

Once you get a provisional approval from the Bank and you have the balance in savings you can start your search. You may want to just get on the property ladder but remember a better built property in a good location will hold its value better than other properties.

Is the property near public transport, shops, schools etc–these are important considerations. If there is a garden when does it get the sun, how will the sun affect the light in the house? If you are buying an apartment then you need to consider management fees and how the property is managed. Is there a

sinking fund for repairs to apartment blocks? If not it could fall on

the owners to pay for repairs.

New to the market this week is this high specification A-rated development built by Anthony Neville Homes.

Within moments of Saggart Main Street just 20 properties are launching with a wide range of choice for every purchaser from first time buyer to those ready to trade up.

Two, three and four bedroom homes range in size from 969 sq ft (90 sq m) to a generously proportioned 1,733sq ft (161 sq m) while all are finished to an exceptional standard. Externally, the properties are modern in finish with an attractive brick elevation complimented by

maintenance free plastered render. Most properties benefit from south facing rear gardens which are levelled, seeded and finished with cobble-locked paved patios with generous parking provisions to the front.

Internally, the units comprise a living room to front, bathroom off the spacious hall, and an open plan-style kitchen/dining/family room to the rear with double doors leading to the garden. Upstairs accommodation ranges from two to four bedrooms (master ensuite, some with a walk-in wardrobes) and a family bathroom.

Unusually for modern

housing schemes, the Type B1 4 bed boasts a second spacious reception room at first floor level which makes a fantastic lounge area for the family to retreat to in the evening with the more formal sitting room area at ground floor level.

The highest standards of insulation have been used to ensure these homes are comfortable and energy efficient and the provision of photo voltaic panels ensures that electricity bills are kept to the minimum with savings in the region of 30%*.

Strategically located within a five minute walk of the Luas stop, the commute time to the city centre

comes in at less than 35 minutes. A host of local amenities are within striking distance with schools, shops, sports clubs, restaurants and bars located on your doorstep.

Known for attention to detail and achieving the highest standards in energy efficiency, this is the second development launched by Anthony Neville Homes this year, while a third launch of luxury homes at Emsworth on Kinsealy Lane is planned for September.

Prices are starting at €260,000.

An effective horror sequel that you can

enjoy even if you havent seen the previous two.

The third installment of the Insidious horrors moves away from the previous movie characters but is nonetheless just as terrifying.

It follows teenager Quinn’s story which has a refreshing simplicity to it when compared to previous installments.

Her mother has died and her father is struggling to cope. Quinn begins to sense the presence of her late mother who she believes is trying to contact her.

She seeks help from psychic Elise Rainier (also in the previous Insidious movies). However, Elise’s tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities.

After Quinn is attacked by what can only be described as a demonic ghost, her father pleads with

Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into ‘The Further’ where she finds a powerful demon who will make her wish she had never begun the process.

Insidious 3 is full of scares to make you jump and you’ll certainly sleep with the lights on after watching.

INSIDIOUSCHAPTER 3

MAN UP

A British rom com worth a watch.

Man Up finally achieves what a number of movies have been trying to do since the release of Love Actually in 2003; it’s a decent, actually funny and brilliant rom com. Surprisingly Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), not one likely to be a romantic lead, is the love interest Jack while Lake Bell (It’s Complicated) swaps her native American accent for a convincing English one as Nancy.

Fed up of being single and berated by her sister to take a chance and put herself out there, Nancy finds herself mistaken for a blind date by Jack at Waterloo Station. Instead of telling him she is not the Jessica he had planned to meet, Nancy goes on the date

and starts to hit it off with Jack. Of course, like all rom coms, there are some unfortunate mishaps and Nancy’s cover is blown by an old school friend Sean (Rory Kennear), who steals the limelight in every scene he is in.

Man Up is laugh-out-loud, cover-your-mouth in shock funny, but also incredibly sweet without being sickening, or subscribing to over-the-top gestures of romantic movies. Nancy and Jack are realistic characters, one a romantic at heart, the other a hardened cynic and yet a chemistry builds between them that is believable and downright hilarious.

This is one rom com that both guys and girls will like, and had the whole cinema laughing regardless of gender. Definitely one to watch.

Mr Holmes stars Ian McKellen

as the legendary detective trying to solve his last case.

Aged 93 and retired to the Sussex countryside for the past 30 years, Holmes resides with his housekeeper Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker).

As his mind starts to fail, Holmes tries to remember the outcome of his last professional case that drove him to leave London for the countryside, but struggles until Roger takes an interest and helps him.

Told through a series of flashbacks, the movie slowly uncovers the truth behind his colleague Dr Watson’s fictionalised versions of Holme’s case, all while he inadvertently develops a friendship with Roger.

This movie is based on the 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by American writer Mitch Cullin despite the original Sherlock Holmes novels being written by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Mr Holmes is a sweet story, yet sometimes overpoweringly sad due to Holme’s

regrets from the past. McKellen is excellent as both the 60-year-old and 93-year-old detective but while the movie is a sort of detective case itself, it is not exactly seat-gripping.

Linney is more than convincing as the stern Mrs Munroe, while Parker will steal your heart as the earnest Roger. Watch it if you fancy a sweet and gentle tale of reflection and memoirs of a once exhilarating life.

ENTERTAINMENT

This year’s IFTA Awards were held in the Mansion House last month and once again InTallaght Magazine was there to help celebrate the good and the great of Irish TV and film.

The IFTA Awards

Last year’s ceremony copped a bit of criticism due to some organisational difficulties

but it’s safe to say this year’s event, which was the twelfth installment of the awards since its inception in 2003, passed off with out any complaints.

The big winners on the night were Frank, the comedy from Lenny Abrahamson, the mental health drama Patrick’s Day which was directed by Terry McMahon and of course the much loved TV drama Love/Hate, as each took three awards home.

Killinarden girl Jordanne Jones, who became the youngest IFTA nominee ever at the age of 14, was nominated for Best Lead Actress in Film for her portrayal of Amy in the movie I Used To Live Here, which was filmed in Tallaght. Even though she missed out on the award this time it is still an amazing achievement to be nominated for a first film.

There was quite the surprise in the Best Film category as Tomm Moore’s animated piece Song of the Sea, which just missed out an Oscar a few months ago, landed the big prize.

Even though RTÉ decided against broadcasting this year’s show, new partner TV3 did a great job putting together an edited recording of the ceremony a week after the event.

As the stars arrived on the red carpet, on what was a lovely sunny evening, most of them remarked on the results of the Marriage Referendum from the day before.

former InTallaght cover star Amy Huberman as she made her arrival accompanied by her brother Mark. Amy is currently finishing the second draft of her feature film Bolt, and is enjoying the writing process.

“I’ve been writing a lot and the second draft of the film has gone in. It’s been a learning curve because I haven’t done it before,” she said.

On a very sad note however RTÉ legend Bill O’Herlihy seemed to be in great form as he worked his way up the red carpet chatting about his recent trip to the Cannes Film Festival and laughing and joking with press and photographers. He seemed full of life which made the news of his death from a heart attack the next day all the more shocking.

In contrast to last year many of our best known actors were missing at this year’s ceremony. Neither Colin Farrell, Michael Fassbender or Jack Reynor, who

were all nominated in the Best Actor category, were available and the award went to rising star Moe Dunford for his critically-acclaimed performance in Patrick’s Day.

Meanwhile Aidan Gillen won Best Actor in a Drama for his outstanding performance in political drama Charlie.

Deirdre O’Kane won Best Lead Actress Film for her portrayal of charity campaigner Christina Noble while Charlie Murphy, who plays Siobhan on Love/Hate, took home the

Dubliner and Sherlock star Andrew Scott said, “It’s been an absolutely amazing weekend. I’m so overwhelmed that I got to be here. I haven’t given much thought to winning or losing. I just feel like everyone’s a winner this weekend.”

Cork actress Sarah Greene, who took home two awards, also made reference to the historic events of the day before when asked whether winning was the new highpoint of her weekend. “No, yesterday was the highpoint of my weekend,” she said.We were also able to catch up with

award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Drama.

Jim Sheridan was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the actor Sean Bean, and some of the people who spoke glowingly of his work were director Neil Jordan, actor John Hurt and rapper 50 Cent.

Sheridan was acknowledged for his outstanding contribution to Irish film for his work including My Left Foot, In America, The Field and, of course, 50 Cents’ 2005 biopic Get Rich or Die Tryin’.

“This means a huge amount to me,” Sheridan said. “Getting recognised in your home town is always special. But more important than getting this award is having so many members of my family here tonight to celebrate with me.”After the calls last year to scrap the IFTA Awards it seems this year’s event has given the annual ceremony a much needed shot in the arm. 2015’s IFTA Winners

A s we are halfway through 2015 we decided to take a

look at some of the tech products to keep an eye on in the latter stages of 2015, from the practical to the not so practical.

USB Type-CThe first thing to look out for in the next few months and years is the new USB Type-C. With its inclusion on

the new Apple MacBook the new USB Type-C will also be in new PCs.

One of the main features of the new

USB is the quicker charge times from USB outlets. This

means that your device will charge at the

same speed from the port in the PC as it would if it were

plugged into the plugs in your wall, which as we all know is much quicker at the moment.

The USB Type-C will also be a benefit to PCs going forward as it will be the only port in the computers leaving more space for batteries and processor benefits etc to improve your computer going forward in the future.

Steam MachinesSteam Machines are set to be released later in 2015 and this will give the power of PC gaming but on a console. The price of the machines aren’t cheap with the Alienware machine costing $449/€400.45 and the Syber machine costing $499/€445.04.

Both machines are in full 1080p HD and give you access to a library of games to choose to purchase from. The Syber system gives you the higher quality and performance of PC games but in console form. The Syber system can also be upgraded quickly and hassle-free from off the shelf PC components to keep the machine up to date.

Windows 10Windows 10 which we looked at in the previous issue of InTallaght is something to look out for going forward. If like myself you are using a Windows-powered PC you will have gotten a notification to upgrade to Windows 10 at this stage.

The release date of July 29th for Windows 10 has also been announced meaning that it is coming sooner rather than later in the summer of 2015.

Samsung Galaxy S6The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is expected to be released before the end of 2015 with photos of the phone leaked recently along with its manual. We know that it looks rugged

and great and that it is virtually waterproof.

The phone has a camouflage colour in white and black in

the two leaked pictures and it looks completely

different to previous Galaxy phones.

Hendo HoverboardThe final tech product to

keep an eye on in 2015 is the Hendo Hoverboard. Although a

downside is that you apparently need copper streets for the board to

work, it is a major leap forward in hoverboard technology.

Although it is not quite at the spec Marty McFly had in Back to the Future II when he visited 2015, hopefully we are not that far off with the technology.

TECH

FIVE TECH PRODUCTS TO LOOK AT IN 2015

Page 45: InTallaght EDITION 70

After four years Florence and her machine are back with their third

record–an album title that is full of truths.

’Cause that’s exactly what this new effort is; big, blue and absolutely beautiful. With HBHBHB Florence Welch is in a different cosmos than what we are used to. The song lyrics

are more raw and undressed than the elusive and dreamy lyrics that we normally know her for.

Coldplay/Adele-producer Paul Epworth is now exchanged with Mumford & Sons/Arcade Fire-producer Markus Dravs. He wanted to strip these songs down and that worked perfectly. Most of the mystical metaphors are gone and replaced with a direct and honest expression. At the same time it still has all the melodrama and emotional depth that you would be expecting from a Florence + the Machine album.

This is a dramatic heartbreak album made by a lovesick Florence. Her song writing and vocals are as strong as ever, and the core is still her voice as a dreamy blanket over the music. Each and every one of these intense and spellbinding songs are massive with their strings and horns, and they are made to be played in packed-out stadiums.

Opener Ship To Wreck is a super catchy, rocking tune with jangly acoustic guitars, and Florence is honestly asking; “Did I drink too much? / Am I losing touch? / Did I build this ship to wreck?”

It follows up with lead single What Kind of Man, yet another breakup tune, where Florence has a drunken

settlement with a man, sneeringly asking; “What kind of man loves like this?” It has stomping guitar riffs, trumpets, and epic chants. “So I’d reasoned I was drunk enough to deal with it / You were on the other side / Like always, you could never make your mind,” tells Florence.

The title track is a stunning and dramatic experience, while Delilah is an instantly catchy and powerful song of hope. The more peaceful and dreamy ballads Various Storms & Saints and Long & Lost are

more in the melancholic department with a calmer, but yet big, sound.

With HBHBHB Florence Welch once again gives her peers a run for their money. It’s a technical masterpiece, and that combined with the lyrical honesty makes it the strongest Florence + the Machine album to date. The genius Florence Welch has most definitely still Got the Love.

MUSIC

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE

Charlotte Aitchison has more than proved that she

can write high class pop songs.

She penned one of last year’s big pop highlights Boom Clap, collaborated with Iggy Azalea on Fancy and last but not least co-wrote I Love It with Icona Pop.

She released her second studio album Sucker in December last year and Famous is the fourth single to be released from the album. Much like the rest of the record, the party factor on Famous is as sky-high as the heels, and the genre could be called something like ‘snarling power-pop in a miniskirt’. With glam, glitter, girl power and rebellious guitar riffs the song is super sassy with a confidence on the edge of cockiness.

With the Sucker album and Famous, Charli XCX shows that she has no problems being the voice of her own songs. There is nothing forced about her music –she keeps it real and uncomplicated and she has delivered a kickass album, where Famous is a more than a respectable power-pop tune.

From Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros

comes the upcoming action adventure game, and personally my most anticipated game of the next gen consoles and 2015, Batman Arkham Knight.

Arkham Knight will be the third and final game in the Batman Arkham trilogy and it is set one year after the events of Arkham City. Scarecrow is the main villain in the game and he has launched an attack on Gotham City which Batman must stop.

Scarecrow is not the only Batman villain in Arkham Knight with the Riddler, and his Riddler trophies returning, as well as Two Face, Poison Ivy, Penguin and Harley Quinn to name a few. Rocksteady have also created their own Batman nemesis, the Arkham Knight.

Batman won’t be on his own though with one

of the new features of the game being dual play. This is where players can switch between Batman and one of his allies, either Robin, Nightwing or Cat Woman while in free-flow combat to help take out the thugs of Gotham City.

There are many new features in Arkham Knight that were not in the other games, however the main one is the fact that you can drive the Batmobile. The Batmobile can be driven by Batman, or also by remote control, and it features two different modes to choose from, Pursuit Mode and Battle Mode.

Arkham Knight will have side missions like the Riddler trophies which is reported to have 243 optional challenges to solve. Batman can also investigate crimes which happen throughout Gotham City such as murders.

As amazing as Arkham Knight looks, one of the main controversies is the amount of additional DLC and the cost of the Season Pass. Depending on where you pre-order the game also depends on what DLC you get and the price of the game also varies from store to store.

Volkswagen are one of the most popular models here in Ireland for a list

of reasons and not just their famous reliability.

The Passat in particular has been a favourite amongst large families over the years due to its style and size. Volkswagen really broke the mould when they designed the Passat CC, it’s based on the more practical Passat saloon but the CC is far sleeker and is designed to take on more expensive rivals like the Audi A5 Sportsback and BMW 3 Series.

I had the pleasure of driving a Passat CC for the past week. Initially I was put off by how long the car seemed and worried about parking a car I felt seemed quite awkward in size but it never seemed an issue.

As with all Volkswagens the interior impresses and as you can imagine the higher you go in trim levels the more impressive it gets. There are 3 levels available from the standard CC to the better specified GT and top of the range R-Line. The whole range comes with plenty of kit too, all CC’s have Bluetooth phone connectivity, touch screen sat nav, climate control rain-sensing windscreen wipers and automatic headlights.

The controls inside are all similar to the Passat and are simple and easy

to use. The interior also features an analogue clock which was sourced from the latest Volkswagen Phaeton luxury saloon, the positioning of which I found strange at first but I can see what Volkswagen were doing as it certainly fits in well with the style of the dashboard.

The level of comfort is second to none and the room in the back is unbelievable for a car that is essentially a coupé, while the boot shocked me with its huge storage capacity.

The model I drove was a 2.0 Litre Diesel automatic and it’s the first automatic I have ever driven. I was amazed at how much power was behind the engine not to mention how impressively fast the model changed through the gears.

Ok let’s talk about the price, it is relatively expensive and will set you back roughly upwards of €39,000 for a 2015 model. Yes it’s not cheap but when you compare it to its rivals (Audi and BMW) it’s not too bad. What are the pros? Well it looks great, it’s quiet in the cabin and there are plenty of engine sizes to choose from. The cons? Well it’s not cheap, but for the quality and space I really can’t see why this wouldn’t be top of everyone’s wish list.

Irish bestselling author Marian Keyes has just released her latest novel on

paperback to rave reviews. It is no surprise that Marian Keyes

has written another brilliant bestselling novel, which just got released on paperback this month. What is surprising is that Keyes continues to be witty, funny and moving all in a genre described as ‘chick lit’ that often diminishes brilliant writing as nothing more than a beach read for dumb women. On a personal note, Keyes has suffered greatly from depression, something she is very public about to raise awareness of, so she says herself it can take her a long time to write a book, and what a book indeed.

The story follows a female protagonist, Stella Sweeney, a 41 year old beautician-turned-writer who has returned to Ireland with her tail between her legs after a failure in New York. While the story is told through a series of flashbacks, we don’t quite know from the offset what the failure was, although it is alluded to bit by bit as part career and part romance-based.

Stella has two children, one boy finishing his Leaving Cert and an adult daughter who remained in New York. She also has a narcissistic, irritating and manipulative ex-husband, who for me was beyond annoying and the only part of the book that put me off. Stella is a bit of a pushover at times, and at times I felt like shaking her and telling her to stand up for herself, although

thankfully she does evolve and grow as the book goes on.

One of the biggest story points is a flashback to four years previously where Stella falls ill with a type of paralysis called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which throws her life into chaos and leads to the demise of her marriage. Because she has been doing so much for her family, they don’t know how to survive

without her. Only through the efforts of one of the doctors does she pull through. The illness Stella gets could be a metaphorical version of Keyes depression–something that pins her down, she cannot move or function without the help of medical professionals and feels she is a burden to her family.

Keyes manages to gracefully craft the story as it progresses both in the past flashbacks and the present, a difficult task for any author. All the

while she keeps the reader entertained, and despite some difficult moments, does not get too maudlin and instead shows the funny side of things in a wry manner. What could have been a harrowing and upsetting tale of a life where bad things happen to good people, Keyes effortlessly creates an upbeat, funny and brilliant tale.

This book is definitely worth a read, and just because you might see

people reading it on the beach, don’t dismiss it for a forgettable beach read, its much, much more than that.

BOOK

The Woman Who Stole My Life

MARIAN KEYES

Marian Keyes is one of the most successful

Irish novelists of all time. She studied law and accountancy and finally started writing short stories in 1993 “out of the blue.”

Though she had no intention of ever writing a novel (“It would take too long”) she sent her short stories to a publisher, with a letter saying she’d started work on a novel.

The publishers replied, asking to see the novel, and once her panic had subsided, she began to write what subsequently became her first book Watermelon.

Since then she has published seven further novels and two collections of non-fiction, and has sold 15 million copies of her books in 30 languages.

She now lives in Dún Laoghaire with her husband Tony.

WRITERS’ CORNER

by Peter Walsh

‘It was hard being old,’ he mused, it wasn’t just the tiredness, it was the layer of aching nostalgia

clinging to his each and every thought, like lichen growing on the cold stone of his brain; and the silence that came to him when the others left. It wasn’t even a silence, it was more an absence of old sounds that meant his loved ones had departed, left him sitting there listening to the tick of a clock, the boil of a kettle and the crackle of a fading radio, while he struggled through the crossword for words all too content to stay curled up and sleeping by the embers of his mind.

The doorbell rang, and then began the slow rise and shuffle to the door. The safety latch, that second lock, his dirty auld fingers long lost of their dexterity, the door finally opened and there stood before him was a girl chewing gum, she was 22. To him, she looked about seven or eight.

“Kompany.”“Sorry?”She showed him her I.D. “I’m

with Kompany, you know, to help old people, you.”

“Oh, that’s not till Wednesday.“This is Wednesday.”“Oh.”Their eyes met briefly in what was

an act of abstract doorstep combat, the old world bending powerless to the new world’s will. A pink bubble rose from the victor’s mouth, burst, and strange magic spread into the air like a leaked gas.

“Are you going to let me in?” “Oh, yes, only I was expecting

someone…”

“Less attractive? Sorry gramps, I don’t go over 40.”

He flushed, “Older, I mean, I…”She wasn’t about to wait for the

cogs to complete their complex series of rotations, she flew by him into the house and was in the kitchen surveying its dated infrastructure by the time his head had made the slow arc back in her direction. Suddenly, she sprang into action, turned the radio off, grabbed another cup, poured water into the two cups there and took a brief glance at the paper.

“Relief,” she said. “Hah?”“Relief, 8 down.”“Oh,” he said, thank you.”He closed the door behind him

and made his way slowly back into the kitchen. There was that within him that realised that whatever odd thing it was that had just come through the door, it might be somehow good.

She plonked two mugs down before him.

“Biscuits?”“Hah?”“BIS-CUITS,” she repeated slow

and loud. “Oh, press above the sink.”She was off again, dashing and

scooping in blurs of movement, with the ease of someone yet to realise that back trouble is actually a thing. A couple of moments later she appeared before him again, smiling all of a sudden and he couldn’t but help return that smile, soft and disarming as it was. The way it spread and shot out of her eyes in mischievous sparkles. It was like Mary Poppins but directed by David Lynch.

“Sally,” she said, throwing out a hand met gently by his own.

“William.”“Got a telly, William?”“Yes.”“Come on so, Hollyoaks is about to

start.” “Holly what?”

“You’ll love it, I’ll fill you in.”“Oh.”And with that she was gone,

pushing through a door she assumed rightly as the sitting room, and him left standing there in the wake of her arrival, like a man behind a rocket as it launched. He paused a moment then tottered off into the sitting room to where the creature waited. For the first time in a long time he felt the death of his mundanity, which for so long now had been close the death of him.

Boxing Mourns Loss Of Local Legend HylandThe Irish boxing

community and Tallaght are

mourning the loss of Paddy Hyland Senior who tragically passed away at the beginning of June.

Hyland, founder of the hugely successful Golden Cobra Boxing Club in Tallaght, was a massively popular and respected coach in Irish boxing and was the driving force behind the success of his three sons, Patrick, Paul and Eddie who simultaneously held the National titles in their respective divisions.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association paid tribute to Paddy saying, “Patrick was a very active and well liked member of the Association who had coached multiple Junior, Youth and Senior National Champions. He also represented Ireland as a Coach. Paddy was instrumental in developing his club in the community having worked tirelessly over the years with all of the members, both male

and female to help grow to a current size of over 50 athletes. He also hosted a number of very successful Amateur and Pro-Shows in the National Stadium and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”

With the Golden Cobra BC celebrating its 25th anniversary this year the club has amassed an amazing 52 national titles including in women’s boxing over the years and has seen success across all levels of domestic amateur boxing, all thanks to the hard work and dedication of Hyland.

Tributes have been pouring in for Paddy from across the boxing community in Ireland with Carl Frampton saying in a Tweet: “Very sad to hear the terrible news about Paddy Hyland Snr. Always laughing. I remember him

cheering me on in Irish seniors 2009. RIP,” while Barry McGuigan added, “Tragic news to hear of the passing of Paddy Hyland Sr RIP. Deepest condolences and prayers to his boys and his entire family.”

Paddy is survived by his wife Dinah, sons Eddie, Patrick and Paul and daughters Leanne and Charmaine.

The students involved were from the surrounding area and also Foxrock and one of the deceased, Eoghan Culligan was a member of Ballyboden St Enda’s GAA Club who posted this statement on their website:

“It is with great regret and sadness that we inform you that Ballyboden St Enda’s member Eoghan Culligan was one of the six people who tragically lost their lives in Berkeley, California earlier today (June 16th 2015).

Eoghan has been a member of Ballyboden St Enda’s since childhood and was part of the Minor A Championship team that were beaten by Castleknock

Since undergoing a major overhaul last year the Shamrock Rover’s Schoolboy Section continues to go from strength to strength.

Schoolboy Trials

Next month all aspiring young local players have the chance to show what they can do in Rovers’ annual

schoolboy trials. The trials, which are open to everybody,

take place on July 4th and all players aged from Under 8 to Under 15 are welcome to come along and take part.

Having taken over as Head of Youth Development last year Shane Robinson has shown the same dedication to revamping Rover’s underage structure as he did representing the club on the pitch.

“When we started overhauling the underage structure here the target has been to get children from eight years old into the club and provide them with the best facilities and the best coaching available. I feel that now with the calibre of coaches we have working within our Schoolboy Section we can offer the very best coaching. All of our coaches are highly qualified and very ambitious. For example Stephen Bradley, who is the main coach in the 8-11 bracket

is a UEFA A Licensed Coach and also the current Shamrock Rovers First Team Coach as well. Keith O’Halloran and Graham Gartland are both UEFA B Licensed and Stuart McSweeney, Carl Davis, Paul Fox and Lee Rathourne have all played a large role in developing players.

“A lot of schoolboy teams do not put the same emphasis on coaching as we do here and quite often some of their teams will be coached by a father of one of the players. There’s nothing wrong with this but we feel that when the children come to us at a young age we can develop them into footballers. If I had a child I would want them to be coached by someone who is qualified and knows what they’re doing and that is exactly why we have created this project with such a high calibre of coaches,” he said.

For the younger children the Junior Academy is open to anyone 4 - 7 years of age and takes place every Sunday morning from 10am to 11.30am in the Spawell.

Page 57: InTallaght EDITION 70

As well as the trials Shamrock Rovers will also be hosting the FAI Summer Schools in July and August in Tallaght Stadium.

Coaches Currently Involved In The 8 - 11 Teams

Has won every major honour in Irish football and also had spells in Australia and Finland where he was twice voted his club’s player of the year. Currently doing his UEFA A and is qualified in Exercise, Health Studies & Personal Training.

Stephen BradleyLead coach in the 8–11 age bracket. Stephen is a UEFA A Licensed Coach ex-Arsenal and Shamrock Rovers player and current 1st Team Coach. Capped at all ages up to U21 for the Rep of Ireland he has also won every major honour in Irish football.

Best Home Game so far…Rovers 2 Dundalk 2 April 17th

If ever a game had everything this was it! After Dundalk went 2-0 up in the first minute of the second half with a goal from ex-Hoop Ronan Finn, it looked like the three points were heading to the league leaders.

Then came the backlash from The Hoops. On 53 minutes Dundalk keeper Gary Rogers saw red after he hauled down Ryan Brennan just inside the penalty area. Mikey Drennan stepped up to confidently score the resultant penalty and suddenly it was game on.

Six minutes later Drennan was at it again as he scored with a brilliant left foot strike to send the home crowd into raptures. Rovers smelled blood and they continued to batter Dundalk for long spells, substitute keeper Sava saved from Drennan then in the last four minutes the Kilkenny man should have had his hat trick after brilliant work from Miele to tee him up six yards from goal.

Unfortunately Mikey couldn’t find the back of the empty net for the winning goal that his performance deserved. There was still time for another scare at the other end as Dundalk almost snatched the points in the dying moments but Craig Hyland did well to keep out David McMillan.

Best Away Game so far…Sligo 1 Rovers 2 March 24th

The Hoops fourth game of the season, and third on the bounce away from home, was a potentially tricky away tie. Even though Sligo hadn’t made the best of starts to their campaign Rovers were going to have to be at it if they wanted to win in The Showgrounds.

Sean O’Connor gave Rovers the lead after only five minutes after great work from Keith Fahey before ex-Hoop Danny Ledwith drew the hosts level. Five minutes into the second half Mikey Drennan gave Rovers the lead again after some shocking defending from Sligo. Craig Hyland produced some fine saves to deny Sligo a share of the spoils but The Hoops ran out deserved winners.

Best Goal so far…Mikey Drennan (second goal) v Dundalk.

Not only was this a technically fine goal, it may turn out to be even more important come the end of the season. There was absolutely nothing on when Drennan decided to press Andy Boyle on the right hand side of the Dundalk penalty area. But showing the desire and hunger of a striker in form Mikey proceeded to outmuscle Dundalk’s skipper before

unleashing an excellent left footed effort into top corner to draw The Hoops level.

Best Player so far…

Mikey Drennan has come in and done exactly what’s been expected of him and scored goals. Ten in the first half of the season is a great return and he can be proud of what he has achieved so far. He has struck up a great understanding with Brandon Miele and I’m looking forward to seeing him kick on in the second half of the season.

Lowest point so far… Bohs 3 Rovers 1

Having remained unbeaten right up to the last game of the first half of the season the derby defeat in Dalyer was a tough one to take especially after the first half performance.

Going into the match it looked like Rovers had really started to find themselves after scoring nine goals in two games and confidence was high going into this clash. Marty Waters scored for his third game in a row and The

Hoops looked comfortable until half time.

Conor Kenna had pulled up with a hamstring injury before the break and when he didn’t emerge for the second half home manager Keith Long must have fancied his chances. Sure enough, and to make it even more annoying it had to be an ex-Hoop to inflict the damage as Dean Kelly came off the bench to score twice and end Rover’s proud unbeaten record.

Last but not least the Civic Theatre have lots to offer this month too:

Coming up in the Civic Theatre on June 26th and 27th one of Ireland’s most renowned actors and performers, Des Keogh returns to the Civic in My Fair Ladies. Celebrating his 80th year in 2015, Des gets to fulfil a life-long ambition to play legendary Irish man of letters George Bernard Shaw, author of Pygmalion, which became the universally acclaimed film My Fair Lady.

On July 3rd and 4th, the ever-popular Beezneez Theatre Company return to the Civic with a cracking production of Michael Carey’s hit, Thy Will Be Done.

And on July 11th composer Trevor Knight

and singer Honor Heffernan are delighted to present The Whistling Girl, featuring new musical settings of the poetry of the great Dorothy Parker. Audiences can expect a darkly sardonic evening’s entertainment in which the American wit and critic’s words are given a sonic face-lift fusing ‘dirty’-cabaret, electronic-vaudeville, rock and jazz.

Did you know… When the Civic opened in 1999, The first ever performance was of Howie The Rookie by Mark O’Rowe (from Tallaght), directed by Mike Bradwell and starring Aidan Kelly and Karl Shiels. This production has since been staged all over the world most recently performed by Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (‘Nidge’ in RTÉ’s Love/Hate) in an astounding solo performance, for which he was named Best Actor at the 2014 Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards.
