The Victorian Deaf Society (Vicdeaf) provides information, programs, skills development and education to over 16,000 deaf and hard of hearing adults each year through its diverse range of services across Victoria. Established in 1884, Vicdeaf is a progressive community business that provides relevant, responsive and accessible services so that people who are deaf or hard of hearing can enjoy equal opportunities across all areas of life. The Language Partnerships and Innovation Department is responsible for awareness and training programs, information resources, online and print communications, Auslan Classes, organising community activities and providing interpreting, notetaking and live captioning service through Auslan Connections. The Intern interpreting program is a fixed term position with the specific aim of providing a clear career pathway. The program will utilise the Auslan Connections booking office resources and staff interpreting team to ensure Interpreters have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings as well as with a mentor who will assist in advice, guidance and the upgrading of skills in preparation for completing the NAATI Certification test. Position PurposeThe Intern Interpreter position exists to provide support for the Intern to upgrade their interpreting credential as well as effective delivery of interpreting services for Auslan Connections. Mentoring and observation opportunities provided within the program allow for enhanced outcomes for the Intern interpreter as well as for deaf and hearing clients and organisations which Auslan Connections services. The Intern will be given opportunities to work with a mentor, and observe assignments undertaken by their mentor and/or other interpreters where appropriate and be provided with access to a team environment where individual and group discussion is facilitated.

KRA: Auslan InterpretingThe provision of professional and accurate Auslan interpreting for agreed assignments.

Actions Performance Indicators Provide a professional and accurate Auslan

interpreting service for all booked assignments. Actively participate (if available) in bookings

involving telephone interpreting, video conferencing and any other means of interpreting relevant to particular situations.

Bookings are accepted based on the belief that the assignment is within the skills and ability range of the incumbent.

The appropriate means of communication is used within all interpreting assignments.

Ensure that the Program Manager of Interpreting, Booking office Coordinators, or Auslan Connections booking officers are aware of your activities throughout the day.

Booking Officers are able to locate you as needed.

KRA: Auslan Connections Procedures and PoliciesEnsure that departmental procedures and policies are adhered to at all times.

Performance Indicators

Ensure that Auslan Connectionsand ASLIA policies and procedures are being abided by under all circumstances.

Policies and procedures from Auslan Connectionsand Vicdeaf are adhered to at all times.

KRA: Customer ServiceProviding the highest level of customer service

Actions Performance Indicators Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the

commencement of an interpreting assignment. Ensure that participants of interpreting

assignment are familiar with working with an interpreter.

Telephone Auslan Connections if client has not arrived after 30 minutes before leaving the assignment.

Give reasonable notice if unable to service a previously booked assignment.

Ensure client signs claim book (for Latrobe uni jobs only) and claim form is returned to Auslan Connections within seven days of assignment.

Ensure confidentiality is maintained. Ensure appropriate customer outcomes by

being flexible regarding daily schedule.

Punctual arrival at each assignment is achieved 100% of the time unless otherwise negotiated with the Booking Office.

Reasonable notice, as deemed by Auslan Connections, is given for all assignments unable to be attended.

All client claim forms are signed and received by Auslan Connections within the specified time frames.

Confidentiality is adhered to at all times as per the ASLIA code of ethics.

Be responsive to the needs of the Booking office regarding bookings

Keep clear, honest and regular communication with the booking office in relationship to performance and management of assignments

KRA: Professional Development/Team ActivitiesContinuation and extension of skill development

Actions Performance Indicators Participate in an induction with the

Program Manager or Booking Office Coordinator of Auslan Connections.

Participate in an organizational induction by Vicdeaf.

Participate when available in any training or workshops provided by Auslan Connections or Vicdeaf.

Performance appraisals are undertaken on an annual basis and a training and development plan generated from this process.

Attend team meetings and participate as practicable.

When representing Vicdeaf externally, agreed professional standards are maintained at all times.

Assist with internal Auslan Connections administration as requested in non interpreting time i.e. assisting booking officers, preparing professional development, planning team meetings.

Participate in an end of contract interview and review of the intern program

Use ‘down time appropriately

Directives by the Auslan Connections Manager of Interpreting or Booking Office Coordinator are undertaken.

Attend reflective practice sessions when available Take down time opportunities to do self and/or

mentor directed tasks for interpreting practice Use time to prepare appropriately for assignments Prepare for and attend an interview to review the

intern program
