A number of you have been asking about insurance for your groups. However small or informal your group is, you're going to need insurance. You can insure yourself against almost anything, but it costs money. The high cost of insurance has been an ongoing problem for many community & voluntary groups. Hopefully we’ll never need it but it is a way of protecting ourselves as groups and our most valuable asset, our members. Common Policies The most common policies cover Public liability, Building and contents cover and Ve- hicles. If your group is a limited company, charity or employs people you might also want to consider Employer’s liability, Directors’ and Officers’ liability and Professional indemnity.

Common Policies

The most common policies cover Public liability, Building and contents cover and Ve-hicles. If your group is a limited company, charity or employs people you might also want to consider Employer’s liability, Directors’ and Officers’ liability and Professional indemnity.

Shopping Around

Your group may be affiliated to a wider organisation that offers member cover, but it is still worth while shopping around to see if you can do better than the suggested cover. Also, ask if your insurance will cover accidents to members during and/or on the way to activities if this is something that is relevant to your group. Can groups in your area doing similar things come under a blanket insurance?

What it won’t cover:

Getting into debt

Defamation., or

Breach of contract.

Think very carefully, therefore, before entering into

any legal undertakings, such as renting premises,

hiring staff, leasing a photocopier, etc.

Each organisation must decide for itself which types

of insurance are most crucial for their operation.

Who covers Groups in Ireland?

A quick internet search for Insurance for community groups Ireland will provide you with a wide range of companies and brokers that specialise in community and voluntary group cover. They may not be the only ones and you should always check with your own broker, someone you trust and/or other groups to see if they are happy with their insurance.

Happy Hunting and may you never need the insurance!

Fun is like life insurance; the older you get, the more it costs.

Like everyone, Leitrim PPN has had a busy year. Even without support for over six months dealings with the Department and Leitrim County Council were successfully maintained and training was provided in the use of Social Media for community groups and an induction to the PPN for Leitrim Council Personnel.

YOUTH WORK in Leitrim & Sligo

Leitrim on TV— Ireland’s Fittest Family

Well done to the Beirne Family from Mohill who recently won the title of Ireland’s Fittest Family on RTE TV. The family completed eight weeks of challenges under the watchful eye of Ireland International and Munster rugby great, Donncha O’Callaghan. The Beirnes—a father, daughter and two sons team—secured a cash prize of € 15,000 just in time for Christmas. Congratulations.

The North West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force invite applications for the St Patrick’s Day 2018 Small Grants Scheme for once-off funding to Community and Not-for-profit Voluntary groups/agencies who are working to tackle drug and alcohol misuse in counties Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

· Grants will be awarded to organisations whose sole purpose will be the delivery of alternative, alco-hol free events/activities with an education/prevention focus for St Patrick’s Day celebrations in March 2018.

· Priority will be given to groups/agencies who can demonstrate that they have an existing drug and alcohol brief.

Like everyone, Leitrim PPN had a busy year. Even without support for half the year, Social Media Training and work with Leitrim Council Staff was undertaken and the membership of the Network continued to grow.

The Environmental and Community Awards in October were a great success and we all look forward to loads of nominations and new initiatives in this area in 2018. County Plenary took place in November and vacancies on Committees were filled at this time so lots of work done between September and Decem-ber to ensure Leitrim Public Participation Network is in a strong position to start the planned work for 2018. This will include enhanced communications in all directions between yourselves and the committees through linkage groups and making sure there is a better under-standing of the work of Leitrim PPN and how YOU can affect the policy decisions through this network. We’ll

also be looking at training for the groups so make sure you have your say with the training survey above.

All the Representatives, the members of the Secretariat and myself wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas and every good fortune and health in 2018.

Page 3 Community Event—Rossinver 26th Dec

Fancy getting out for a dance over the Christmas and helping the community at the same time? Paul Kelly and His Band are at the Rossinver Community Centre on Tuesday 26th December and tickets are a very reasonably priced €10. They would make a great stocking filler for the dancer in your life.

All proceeds go to the running and upkeep of the Centre which has been a great boon to the community life of Rossinver and all around.

Call in to the Centre to pick up your tickets or give them a call at 071 98 32970. Tickets also available at the venue on the night. Doors Open 9:00 pm. Happy dancing.

Capacity Building—2018

The PPN supports capacity building for its members and Representatives. We want to include training in the Workplan for 2018 so maybe you could tell us what you want. Please complete the survey at:
