Where is Data Communication Taking Us?
February proved to be a busy month for ISA Los Angeles. Last monthwe were privileged to have professional organizer, Jennifer Palais discusseffective business practices and time management strategies forinstrumentation and process control sales representatives and projectmanagers.
February was also a record setting month – well at least in regards to ourannual expo and training event, Instrumentation 2008. On February 28, wewelcome industry professionals from all over Southern California to theCarson Center. This year for the first time ever, we sold out of exhibit space,as over 80 companies presented their products and services.
Training was also a huge success. Our members have been asking fortraining and this year, in addition to the exceptional training offered at ourmonthly meetings, we have packed Instrumentation 2008 with four separate
training areas offering everything from basic applications and tutorials, to technological advancementsand important issues our industry is currently facing.
This is a great opportunity for exhibitors to reach out to the Southern California market and I hopethat all attendees will take advantage of all of the free resources and information available to them.
Instrumentation 2008 event is sort of like a wedding – there were countless hours of planning tomake sure everything went just right, from the location and all of the logistics, all the way down toorganizing the seating chart (a.k.a. the floor plan) so that all of the exhibitors were happy andcompetitors “play nice”. All of this time, effort and hard work all builds in anticipation for the “bigday” and before you can take a breath, the entire event is over.
Then someone on the Section Board reminds me… Instrumentation 2009 is less than a year away!Stay tuned for photos and event highlights!
In the meantime…. Our March meeting will focus on Wireless, Modbus, Ethernet and FiberOptics with Byron Postma of Carollo Engineers leading a panel discussion of leading experts in thedata communications field. Check out all of the details in the Annunciator as well as on your local ISAwebsite: www.isala.org.
Kristina L. Balobeck, PresidentISA Los Angeles Section

Modbus - Still With Us After All TheseYears. Even though Modbus(r) has been withus for over twenty-five years it remains aviable option for data transmission in SCADAand control applications. More and moreproducts and devices are supporting Modbusas a means for communications. Developed byModicon(r) in 1979 for use with its PLCs ithas become the “de facto” standard forcommunications in the automation and controlsindustry.

Data communication panel discussion“Wireless, Modbus, Ethernet, Fiber Optic”
Removing the Confusion aboutWireless Standards. Are you confused withthe Wireless Standards? Should you adaptHART 7.0 or wait for ISA SP 100 standard? Many customers are considering wirelesstechnology as a means to cost effectivelyreduce risk and improve the operationalperformance of their plant assets.Implementing wireless solutions is increasinglybeing used to achieve these improvements. One technology, Wireless Self OrganizingNetworks (IEEE 802.15.4) is emerging as thepreferred method for monitoring assets due toits advantages in providing HART informationwirelessly while mitigating line of sightconsiderations.
Fiber Optic’s EMI-Immune Solutionsfor Harsh or Hazardous Motion Control. There are five major reasons for upgrading ordesigning with fiber optics versus copper: (1)provides immunity (not just resistance) toEMI/RFI, lightning and static electricity; (2)can operate over wider temperature extremes;(3) inert & intrinsically safe for use inhazardous environments; (4) offers high
bandwidth & low loss over long distances; and(5) reduced size & weight compared to coppersystems. For the industrial world, fiber opticsolutions range from passive sensors to fiberoptic media converters to enterprise-wide HighSpeed GbE/10GbE fiber optic networks. We’llbriefly explore the options available today aswell as the products and lessons-learned tohelp you implement a successful fiber opticsolution.
About the panelByron Postma has 33 years of experience
in the design of instrumentation and controlsystems for water and wastewater facilities, nuclear and hydroelectric power plants andpumping stations. He has designed radio-basedSCADA systems for clients from New York toChina, and a utility-wide distributed controlsystem and fiber optic network for San Diego. He is currently employed by Carollo Engineersin Fountain Valley, California. During Instrumentation 2008 Cal Poly Pomonastudents and faculty will demonstrate two of theprojects students developed during the last year.Hands-on project design is one of the requirementsall engineering students must satisfy beforegraduation.
The Extended Communication CouchProject was completed jointly by students in thedepartments of Architecture and Electrical and
Computer Engineering and was exhibitedin New Orleans during the Des Courseexhibition last January.
The couch illumination can becontrolled remotely over the internet andis locally controlled using amicrocontroller. A regular outlet isrequired for operation. The couch ismodular so it can be made larger as spaceallows.
In the Camera on a Chip projectstudents design a CMOS camera chipfrom scratch all the way to fabrication. Thanks to industry donations Cal Poly
Instrumentation 2008
by Salomón Oldak, Ph.D, Cal Poly Student Section Advisor
Pomona is one of the few universities in the country offering toundergraduate students the opportunity of fabricating an actual chip.Students highly benefit from this experience as they learn the use ofvarious design and simulation tools for VLSI design plus they are ableto verify their design in a practical manner towards the completion ofthe project.
Salomón Oldak, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair, Electrical andComputer Engineering Department, Cal Poly Pomona [email protected]. For more information about Cal Poly, pleasecontact Dr. Oldak at [email protected].

I&C training advisorycommittee formed
ISA Los Angeles has formed an industry training advisory commit-tee to address the shortage of instrumentation and controls personnel inthe Los Angeles basin. The primary goal of the project is to identify thedifferent types of personnel who would benefit from training, identifywhat types of training would benefit both the employee and employer, and either locate existing training programs or establish new programsthrough the ISA, the Los Angeles Section, with independent instructorsand/or in conjunction with local colleges and universities.
A great deal of basic information and feedback about current trainingprograms was provided by ISA members from Chevron, Tesoro andSouthern California Gas Company at this meeting. This discussion wasdesigned to be the kick-off to bringing I&C training directly to those whoneed it, at or near the job site. Follow-up meetings will be held over thenext few weeks with the hope to have an ongoing training schedule inplace by early spring.
Anyone interested in taking part in this program – either as aninstructor or if you would like to see world class hands-on instrumenta-tion training by professional instructors at a reasonable cost, or if yourin-house training staff needs help in meeting the need — please contactJohn Prince at 714 968-5501 or [email protected].
The first meeting was held Wednesday, December 19 at the trainingfacility at Wilmington Instrument Company, Inc., an ISO9001:2000 (ISO17025:1999) registered calibration facility and full service distributor, providing test, measurement, and process instrumentation solutions forthe plant maintenance professional. For information about the company,
please contact Doug Larson at (800) 544-2843, or via their website atwww.wilmingtoninstrument.com.
The meeting was followed by a tour of Wilmington InstrumentCompany state of the art calibration lab and dinner at Shamrock Seafoodcourtesy of the ISALA Long Range Planning Committee. ProfessionalDevelopment Hours Certificates were awarded to those who RSVP’d inadvance.
For more information about brining training to your facility, pleasecontact the committee chair, John Prince, at (714) 968-5501.
