The hardest thing to convey to our newest team members, or even a few
that have been here for 15+ years, are the personal benefits of delivering
exceptional guest service. Granted, it’s great for the guests and for the
organization. But addressing: “What’s in it for me?” with skeptical peers is
difficult because buying-in takes both effort and a leap of faith. On the
other hand, those that have bought-in already understand that guest service is actually for them because the world is largely governed by the rule of cause
& effect (i.e. whatever is given out must come back in one form or another).
So whether it’s for the Community, for promotion, for teamwork or for praise
from grateful guests, try guest service on for size if you haven’t already. By simply
picking a reason, work can transform from daily drudgery to a 15+ year vacation with friends, guaranteed.

For this month’s Team Member spotlight, I caught up with Karen Henthorn and believe me that is no easy task. As Assistant Beverage Manager at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino Karen is busy, busy, busy. Karen is part of a team that oversees the beverage department at Wild Horse Pass. “I help the bartenders and servers keep things running smoothly,” says Karen. “I make sure they have the tools to do their jobs and be as successful as they can be.”
Karen has been with Gila River Casinos since 2004 and she was among the Team Members who made the transition to the Ovations team when the new Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino opened in October of 2009. She loves her job and the people she gets to work with everyday. She appreciates that everyday in her position is different.
When Karen isn’t working here at Gila River Casinos, she loves to be in the kitchen. “I love to cook and bake,” she says. Her favorite recipes are for pickles and according to at least one of her Team Members, they are incredible.

She is always on the floor and available for help, questions or anything else that is needed. As a manager she is very visible and very willing to do whatever is needed to get the job done. Karen truly cares about her employees as well as the guests. I have never had a situation in which I ask her for something and she does not do everything possible to get it accomplished. Karen follows up on all requests and is very time
oriented on getting things turned into payroll to ensure that the employee has what they need”
Gila River Indian Community youth are making a difference in the areas of community service, heritage, healthy lifestyles and the environment. Members
of the Akimel O’odham/Pee-Posh Youth Council will attend the 2012 United National Indian Tribal Youth, (UNITY) conference held
in Phoenix during the month of July to learn how to be an effective influence in the community through Youth Council.The first shovels were in the ground at Vee Quiva
Casino & Hotel last month. Gila River Indian Community Governor Gregory Mendoza joined other speakers and
dignitaries involved in the project to kick off construction. Vee Quiva Casino & Hotel is scheduled for completion
in the summer of 2013.
