YOUR HERMÈS WATCH

Designed to meet the most strin-gent demands in terms of pre-cision, your Hermès watch has been subjected to a full set of quality tests before leaving the La Montre Hermès workshops in Bienne, Switzerland.

The materials used have been carefully selected by La Montre Hermès to guarantee the reliability of your watch.

The movement

Your Hermès watch is a complica-tion watch equipped with a moon-phase module fitted on a Swiss made mechanical self-winding movement.– It is wound by means of an os-

cillating weight that reacts to natural wrist movements; it turns and transmits its energy to the barrel spring (mainspring).

– The barrel contains a coiled spring and acts as an energy ac-cumulator that gives the move-ment its autonomy, referred to as the power reserve.

– Over 42-hour power reserve. The power reserve corresponds to the time the watch can run on its own energy reserves without any external supply. The move-ment will thus not require any manual winding unless you stop wearing your watch for more than 42 hours.

The metals used

316L steel: a stainless alloy.

Gold plating: the steel is coated with a layer of gold at least 10 μm thick.

750 gold and steel: 750 solid gold and 316L steel, or 316L steel

coated with a layer of 750 gold at least 250 μm thick.

750 gold: an alloy composed of pure gold, silver, copper or pal-ladium in variable proportions ac-cording to its colour (yellow gold, pink gold or white gold).

Diamonds

Whatever their shape or cut, they are of Top Wesselton V.V.S. clarity and F/G colour.

Hermès leather strap

Traditional Hermès strap, available in several first-rate types of leather (alligator, smooth or grained calf-skin, ostrich, goatskin…).

“Saddle stitching” based on fine leather craftsmanship, a guaran-tee of resistance and sturdiness.

Natural leather treatments de-signed to preserve the authentic-ity and the feel of the straps. The latter acquire a natural patina over time, one of the signature charac-teristics of Hermès leather goods. This great respect for quality makes the straps more sensitive to splashing or to damp surround-ings.

Wearing a Hermès watch fitted with a leather strap is not advis-able for sports activities. In such cases it is better to wear a metal bracelet or a rubber strap, when such are available.

Double-safety folding clasp

Your Hermès strap may be fitted with an articulated buckle that unfolds when opened. It has been specially designed to guarantee maximum security thanks to two devices.

1. It is opened by simultaneously pressing on two lateral push-buttons on either side of the buckle. The device is thus held closed by a click system.

2. A press is also enough to lock the pin into the buckle.

Watch glass

Scratch-resistant anti-glare sap-phire crystal.

Water resistance

Water resistance tested to 3 bar (30 m) or to 5 bar (50 m) for all models.

It is important to always push the crown back against the case in order to guarantee water resist-ance. The crown and pushbuttons must not be pressed or otherwise handled under water.

Caring for your Hermès watch

We recommend that you have your watch checked every three years by a watchmaker duly au-thorised by La Montre Hermès, for the following reasons:

Regular maintenance of the move-mentThe movement of your watch must be regularly maintained and tested in order to guarantee its reliability.

Preserving water resistanceYour water-resistant watch has been tested according to the pre-vailing watch industry norms. Its water resistance depends on the hermetically sealed assembly of the parts composing the case, the glass and the winding-crown, as well as on the maintenance of a number of joints or gaskets.

To avoid any unpleasant surprises, it is important to avoid:– Exposing your watch to mag-

netic fields that might affect the running of the movement or even bring it to a halt – which would then require the interven-

Hermes_PhasesLune_def.indd 7 29.01.13 10:42

8

tion of a watchmaker in order to demagnetise it.

– Taking part in “risky” activities involving violent impacts that might damage the movement, despite the shock-absorbing system meeting Swiss and inter-national standards in this field.

– Swimming if your watch is fit-ted with a leather or natural silk strap. In case of use in salt water, your watch fitted with a metal bracelet or rubber strap should be rinsed under fresh warm water.

International Warranty

Your Hermès Warranty has a two (2) year worldwide cover once you get the International Warranty booklet filled in, dated and signed by the retailer on the day of pur-chase of your Hermès watch.

These instructions do not serve as an international warranty. Kindly refer to the International Warranty Booklet for further information in this respect, as well as detailed recommendations on caring for your Hermès watch. The document also contains after-sales service addresses.

If you follow our advice in terms of maintenance and use, we sincerely trust you will always be satisfied with your Hermès watch, and we thank you for your confidence.

Mankind has always been fasci-nated by the moon and the ma-jority of primitive peoples from bygone days looked upon the moon as the goddess of rain, who dispensed fertilising moisture and ensured abundant harvests.

The moon’s power to produce rain was not its only virtue: it was also held responsible for the morning dew.

But along with its life-creating role, the moon was also the mistress of destructive life forces. In its wax-ing phase, from waxing crescent to full moon, it was believed to be helpful, auspicious and benevo-lent; in its waning phase, from waning crescent to the new moon or dark moon (when the lunar face is hidden), it was believed to be evil, cruel and destructive.

Today, the moon still retains something of its ancient mystery in the hearts of the people of the 21st century, even though we deny it more often than not. In particular, gardeners and sailors refer to it, the former in connec-tion with planting and the latter to estimate tidal range, and they will happily maintain that the weather changes with the new and full moon. Astrologers claim that each of the lunar phases is distinctive and exercises a specific influence on reactions and behaviour, both in our personal life and in our re-lationships with those around us.

MOON PHASES

Hermes_PhasesLune_def.indd 9 29.01.13 10:42

10

The four phases

The four lunar phases, each of which lasts about one week, are called the first quarter, full moon, last (or third) quarter and new moon, with this last marking the end of the cycle and the start of another complete lunar cycle.

The first quarter, which corre-sponds to the waxing crescent moon, appears seven days after the beginning of the lunar cycle and the moon appears as a cres-cent in the shape of a capital “D”. The moon is seen thus in the northern hemisphere, while in the southern hemisphere, it appears in the shape of a “C”.

Then, seven days later, the full moon shines resplendent in the night sky, disturbs the sleep of

sensitive people, increases the tidal range and tarnishes the paint on your car…

In another seven days, the moon is in its last quarter and appears as a crescent in the shape of a capital “C” in the northern hemisphere, while it appears in the shape of a “D” in the southern hemisphere. It is then in its waning phase.

Lastly, seven days later the moon disappears into the shadow of the earth, with its dark face hidden from human sight.

But the moon is still very much present and, in conjunction with the sun, it once again amplifies the daily tidal range.

11

Moon-phase module

The moon-phase module is a cal-endar system based on the length of a month or a lunar cycle which comprises the four main phases of the moon, namely the new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter, with each lasting about 7 days. This month or lunar cycle lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 min-utes and 2.8 seconds.

ADJUSTMENTS

IMPORTANT

To ensure the proper functioning of the movement, please follow all the following steps in their correct order. Setting the time is possible at any moment. But to avoid risking any potential dam-age to your watch, please avoid making any other settings between 3 p.m. and 1 a.m. If you find that one of the correctors locks during one of the four adjustments, please do not force it, but instead revert to the start of the setting process (1. Preparing the movement for correction).

The “Moon phases 2013–2022” chapter at the end of these in-structions will enable you to adjust the moon-phase indication of your Hermès watch. These pages indi-cate the year, the day and the time (GMT) of full moons according to the year.

The algorithms used to predict moon phases are taken from the book “Astronomical Algorithms” by Jean Meesus (published by Willmann-Bell, Inc., Richmond, 1991, ISBN 0-943396-35-2).

All the calculations are by Fred Espenak and he assumes full re-sponsibility for their accuracy.
