    Limited Warranty

    GCTS warrants to the original Buyer only, that the equipment of its manufacture will be free from

    defects in material or workmanship for a period of 12 months after shipment from its factory or 12

    months from acceptance in the case of GCTS installation. In no case shall warranty be extended

    beyond a period of 15 months past shipment date (allowing a maximum of 3 months for installation

    and acceptance). GCTS shall, at its option, repair or replace free of charge within the warranty

    period any components or assemblies supplied by GCTS which prove to be defective in

    workmanship or materials, subject to the following:

    GCTS reserves the right to request the prepaid return of such defective items to its factory for inspection and evaluation.

    Expendable items (oil, seals, filters, etc.) and items subject to normal wear and/or replacement will not be covered under warranty if their failure is the result of normal wear.

    Items supplied by GCTS but not of its manufacture (computers, oscilloscopes, commercial software packages, etc.) carry the original manufacturers warranty which is passed on to the customer who is responsible to deal directly with the manufacturer on warranty issues.

    This warranty does not apply to damage due to accident, improper use, negligence, or modification of any part of the testing system.

    This warranty is extended only to the original Buyer of the equipment.

    User Responsibilities

    : Read the safety considerations before operating the hydraulic power

    supply. Failure to read and understand the operations manual and/or

    follow the recommended safety practices can result in serious personal

    injuries and/or damage to the equipment.

    Safety Practices

    Review these guidelines to ensure that your current operating procedures do not result in

    hazardous situations. Although all hazards may not be able to be eliminated, the following

    guidelines can be used to identify hazards so that the proper training, operating procedures,

    and safety equipment can be implemented.

    System operators should fully review the documentation supplied to gain an understanding

    of the system functions. Figures will be placed throughout the manual and should be

    reviewed.

    To ensure smooth system operation during the first execution of the control software, the

    user should be very familiar with this section and the specific test module to be used.

    After the documentation (for this device) has been reviewed, make modifications to your

    current operating procedures which will minimize hazards. It may be beneficial to make an

    adjustment checklist that corresponds to your specific hardware.

    OPERATING SAFETY CONDITIONS

    The following operating safety considerations are applicable to most testing systems. The

    user is required to read each item below and determine if it is applicable to the testing

    system for which this (device) will be used. The user is also required to obtain and review

    all safety instructions on specific testing equipment used in the system.

    EMERGENCY STOPS

    Determine the location of system emergency stop buttons to allow for quick emergency

    stops. Refer to the individual product manuals for instructions on how to wire

    additional emergency stop circuits.

    POTENTIAL CRUSH POINTS

    Know where the potential loads units pinch and crush points are and take appropriate

    safety precautions.

    SYSTEM INTERLOCKS

    System interlock devices should always be used and properly adjusted. Test all

    interlock devices for proper operation immediately before a test. Because of the

    possibility of operator error, system misadjustment, or component failure, interlock

    devices cannot be relied on to protect personnel, test specimens, or test equipment.

    USE AND HANDLING

    Do not disturb sensors.

    Ensure secure cable connections.

    Keep bystanders away.

    Stay clear of moving equipment.

    Be aware of electrical hazards.

    1.0 INTRODUCTION

    The GCTS Point Load Tester is an easy to use apparatus for measuring the point load

    strength index of random and irregular shaped rock specimens. It incorporates digital

    technology to increase precision and ease of use while reducing size and weight. The

    introduction of a pressure sensor to indicate load provides a better accuracy at any load

    level eliminating the imprecision of traditional pressure gauges at low loads.

    The point load test does not require costly specimen preparation and is a quick and simple

    test. The test can be performed in the field on irregular pieces of rocks allowing a large

    number of test results. Typically, tests are performed on pieces of drill core at least 1.4

    times as long as the diameter. Shape errors should be avoided for platy or discoid

    specimens by applying the load along the shortest specimen dimension. The point load

    strength index, Is, is defined as:

    D = Distance between the loading point.

    The point load strength index is corrected for a specimen with a 50 mm diameter, and the

    following formula gives the size corrected point load strength index:

    Franklin and Dusseault give a size correction factor when there is no data to interpolate or

    extrapolate. The correction factor, F, is calculated as:

    A typical frequently used correlation between size corrected point load strength index and

    Unconfined compression strength is:

    The Conversion Factor C has traditionally been taken as 24 (Goodman, 1989, p.37),

    however since point load testing is an index testing it is the responsibility of the user to

    ensure that they are using the right conversion factor for their rock type. This can be done

    by either relying on past data to establish a correlation between to or by testing

    several rock cores to establish a correlation. Conversion Factor C may vary

    significantly. According to Franklin and Dusseault, while the conversion factor is usually

    between 20 and 25, it can vary between 15 and 50. Rusnak and Mark found that the low

    end can even be 12.6. In theory, each rock type should have its own conversion factor.

    The user is encouraged to pick a Conversion Factor C of 24 only if such a conversion

    factor is justifiable.

    The system includes a meter display to read the applied load calibrated in kN as default.

    Other load units can also be used but recalibration of the meter display is necessary. A 0 to

    2 VDC output is also provided to connect to a data acquisition device.

    An advanced option for the GCTS Point Load Tester is the ultrasonic platens for the

    measurement of P wave velocity. The P wave velocity is a more rational and better

    correlation to strength than the point load index. The major advantage of the ultrasonic

    velocity option is that, like the point load test, it does not require expensive specimen

    preparation. With this option the P wave velocity is measured during the point load test.

    This option also gives the advantage of being able to correlate the P wave velocity with the

    point load strength on the same specimen in a very short period of time.

    Other options include unconfined compression loading platens, triaxial cells, and frames for

    performing indirect tension, uniaxial, and triaxial tests on small specimens. Loads up to 100

    kN (22 kips) can be applied. These options include software to capture the complete stress-

    strain curve and automatically calculate strength parameters.

    3.0 CALIBRATION PROCEDURES

    Gauge Setup

    It is advantageous to setup the Gauge to remember and display the peak/maximum load,

    especially if the PLT is not connected to the PntLoad software. The instruction manuals for

    these gauges can either be downloaded from the internet or you can request them from

    GCTS by sending an email to [email protected] and identifying your gauge type (PG-

    10000 or PG10).

    For the model PG-10000 (old) gauges, the following procedure can be used to enable the

    PEAK Hi feature (section 2.0 in the instructions):

    Select PEAK Hi mode by pressing and holding the MODE key until the reading starts

    flashing. Release the MODE key, then press MODE key once more, the display will

    read HOLD. Press ENTR key once, the display will read NO H. Using keys to

    select H Hi (Peak High Hold). Press ENTR key to lock your selection.

    NOTE: When the hold function is enabled, PEAK is displayed.

    For the model PG10 (new) gauges, the Peak-Hold feature is already enabled at the factory.

    To enable or disable it please see page 11 in the instructions. If the user does not like the

    Peak-Hold feature (because it only displays the peak/maximum at all times), the user can

    disable the Peak-Hold feature and use instead the Maximum/Minimum feature. This

    Maximum/Minimum feature does not need to be enabled, resetting it can be quite

    cumbersome, and the instructions to do that are given on page 8 in the instructions.

    4.0 RUNNING A TEST

    4.1 Test Set-Up Procedure

    For testing, the pump reservoir cap must be in the Vent position. The unit was shipped

    with the pump reservoir cap in the Closed position for transport, but during usage the

    pump reservoir cap must be in the Vent position!

    The operation of the GCTS Point Load Tester set up is simple and straightforward. First

    open the relief valve on the hand pump. If the meter displays an offset load use the TARE

    OUT or Zero feature.

    For the model PG-10000 (old) gauges, the following procedure can be used to TARE

    OUT or Zero (section 1.0 in the instructions): Press and hold the MODE key until the

    reading starts flashing. Release the MODE key. Press the ENTER key until the

    reading becomes 0.00.

    For the model PG10 (new) gauges, the following procedure can be used to TARE OUT or

    Zero (page 4 in the instructions, Enter Button Secondary Function): Press and hold the

    Enter Button for approximately 3seconds. If it displays No Zero, the Tare Feature

    has to be enabled (see page 26 of the instructions).

    4.2 Performing a test

    Adjust the location of the upper crosshead so that the piston will not be fully extended

    during the test. It is best to have the loading piston operate within the lower region of its

    stroke to prevent alignment damage to the piston. This can occur when the piston is

    fully extended and loading against an uneven surface.

    Close the pump relief valve.

    Hold the specimen in between loading points, and begin pumping the handle until the

    load display indicates some initial contact.

    Read the displacement on the side ruler (or in the optional deformation meter display if

    available) and calculate the distance "D" between the point loads.

    Once "D" has been recorded, proceed pumping until the specimen fails (indicated by a

    sudden loss of the applied load).

    While the digital gage is in PEAK mode, the display will show the maximum load at all

    times. You must remember to reset the PEAK value before each test.

    To reset after capturing a Hi Peak:

    For the model PG-10000 (old) gauges, the following procedure can be used to TARE

    OUT or Zero (section 2.0 in the instructions): Press and hold MODE key until the

    reading starts flashing. Release the MODE key, then press ENTR, hold momentarily

    then release.

    For the model PG10 (new) gauges, the following procedure can be used to reset the Peak

    value (page 11 in the instructions): Press the (up arrow) key.

    5.0 SAFETY

    Safety guideline while operating equipment:

    : Always use protective clothing and equipment to eliminate risk of personal

    injury. Do not operate this unit without goggles, gloves, and lab coat to

    protect your eyes, hands, and any other exposed body part. Specimen

    particles will explode outwards at failure.

    : Do not exceed the maximum pressure range for the installed sensor as

    indicated by the pressure gauge.

    IMPORTANT: Do not forget to reset the peak load on the meter before the next test is

    performed or the new failure load may not be recorded.

    6.0 SOFTWARE

    The GCTS PntLoad software for Windows has been designed to go along with the

    GCTS Point Load testing System in order to provide a complete package to test numerous

    specimens fast and with ease and to present the statistical results in a neat and organized

    format. The software can be configured to provide an automated system whereas very

    minimal interaction from the operator is needed as test can be started and stopped

    automatically based upon a threshold load value.

    Take care of your device

    Handle your device and accessories with care. The following suggestions help you protect

    your warranty coverage.

    Do not use or store the device in dusty areas. Moving parts and electronic components

    can be damaged.

    Do not attempt to open the device other than as instructed in the user guide.

    Unauthorized modifications may damage the device.

    APG warrants its products to be free from defects of material and workmanship

    and will, without charge, replace or repair any equipment found defective

    upon inspection at its factory, provided the equipment has been returned,

    transportation prepaid, within 24 months from date of shipment from factory.

    Proper installation, operation and maintenance of the product becomes the

    responsibility of the user upon receipt of the product.

    Returns and allowances must be authorized by APG in advance. APG will

    assign a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number which must appear

    on all related papers and the outside of the shipping carton. All returns are

    subject to the fi nal review by APG. Returns are subject to restocking charges as

    Primary Function: Used to access the main setup menu or to return to

    the main setup menu from any of the submenus.

    Secondary Function: Used to cycle the gauge on and off by pressing and

    Operating Modes: The PG10 has 4 standard operating modes to choose from:

    Mode 000: Full Access

    - Provides access to all menu settings. If no buttons are pushed for 1 minute,

    the gauge will revert back to Mode 003 (factory default).

    Mode 002: Limited Access

    - Menu is locked.

    - zeros the reading (press and hold for 3 seconds).

    Advanced Settings (AdVSET): The Advanced Settings menu is used to customize the LCD display and to setup

    any optional features, such as an analog output.

    Auto-Off (AUTO): This function is applicable to battery powered units only. The Auto-Off feature

    allows the user to designate the time of inactivity (no buttons pushed) until the

    gauge automatically powers down.

    Options: OFF, 2 MIN, 4 MIN, 8 MIN, 16 MIN, 32 MIN and LIGHT

    NOTE 1: Selecting OFF disables the Auto-Off feature; the gauge will then remain powered indefi nitely so long as suffi cient voltage is being supplied

    (>1.8V).

    NOTE 2: Selecting LIGHT will keep the gauge continuously powered as

    Bar Graph 0% (bAR 0) & Bar Graph 100% (bAR100) Settings: Allows the user to defi ne the reading values associated with 0% and 100% on

    the 2700 display bar graph. Bars will appear/disappear in 10% increments of the

    total span between the two values.

    NOTE: The 0% reference does not have to be the lower pressure setting; 0% can be set as the higher pressure setting, thereby causing the bar graph to

    increase as the pressure decreases. Negative pressure settings can also be used

    as either the 0% or 100% reference points.

    Full-Scale Range Adjust (RANGE): Allows the user to adjust the reading at full-scale pressure. The reading can be

    adjusted by +/-10% full-scale.

    NOTE: The pressure reading must be within 5% of the full-scale value in order to make Range adjustments. For example, a 1000 psi gauge would need

    to be reading between 950 psi and 1050 psi in order to adjust the Range

    feature. If the reading is not within 5% of full scale, NOAdJU (No

    Adjustment) will be displayed when trying to adjust the Range.

    Adjusting the Full-Scale Range: Step 1: Ensure that the pressure reading is within 5% of full-scale.

    Step 2: Press to enter the main setup menu.

    Step 3: Press or to cycle through the options until AdVSET is

    Fast Calibration (CALIBR): Allows the user to perform a fast calibration of the zero and span.

    NOTE: Both zero pressure and full-scale pressure must be applied to the gauge in order to complete the quick calibration process.

    Datalogging (dATLOG): When datalogging is enabled, the PG10 will log the pressure readings, along

    with the associated date/time stamps, at an interval determined by the Logging

    Sample Rate setting (see page 20).

    The PG10 can be confi gured to log continuously, based solely on the Logging

    Sample Rate setting, or to log only when user defi ned pressure conditions exist

    (event logging). The gauge will continue to log readings at the Logging Sample

    Rate interval for as long as the event conditions persist.

    The gauge can store a maximum of 60 records. Each record is logged in

    a FIFO (fi rst-in, fi rst-out) buffer. This means that once the buffer is full (60

    Tare (TARE): Enabling the Tare function will set the current pressure reading as the zero

    reference pressure in order to measure a net change in pressure as opposed to

    measuring the gross pressure.

    Enabling the Tare feature: Step 1: Press to enter the main setup menu.

    Step 2: Press or to cycle through the options until TARE is displayed.

    Step 3: Press to access the Tare setting options.

    Step 4: Press or to toggle between OFF and ON.

    Step 5: Press button to apply the displayed option and return to main setup

    menu.

    NOTE 1: When tare function is enabled, the icon will appear in the upper center of the display.

    WARNING: Do NOT disconnect the gauge from the pressure fi tting while the tare function is enabled. The gauge could still be under pressure even

    though the reading shows 0.

    NOTE 2: If the maximum gross full-scale pressure value is reached while the Tare feature is enabled, the PG10 will automatically disable the Tare feature

    and return to reading the gross pressure in order to help prevent the user from

    accidently overpressuring the gauge.

    NOTE 3: Pressing and holding with the tare function enabled will re-tare the gauge at the current pressure value. MODE

    Analog Low (AL SET) & Analog High (AH SET) Setpoints: Allows the user to defi ne the reading values associated with the Low Analog

    signal (i.e. 4mA or 0V) and the High Analog signal (i.e. 20mA, 2V or 5V).

    NOTE: The analog setpoints must be entered using the gauges base unit of measure (typically PSI).

    Setting the Analog Signal Span: Step 1: Press to enter the main setup menu.

    Step 2: Press or to cycle through the options until OUTPUT is

    displayed.

    Step 3: Press to access the Output Settings menu.

    Step 4: Press or to cycle through the options until AL SET is displayed.

    Analog Low (AL CAL) & Analog High (AH CAL) Calibration: Allows the user to calibrate or trim the endpoints of the analog signal output (i.e. 4mA & 20mA or 0V & 2V/5V)

    Calibrating the Analog Signal End-Points: Step 1: Use a calibrated meter to monitor the analog output signal.

    Step 2: Force a low analog output signal (i.e. 4mA or 0V) either by adjusting

    the applied pressure or by adjusting the Analog Setpoints (see Analog Setpointson page 18 for details). Step 3: Press to enter the main setup menu.

    Step 4: Press or to cycle through the options until Output is displayed.

    Step 5: Press to access the Output Settings menu.

    Step 6: Press or to cycle through the setup options until AL CAL is

    Trip Points: The PG10 can be confi gured with dual relay trip-point outputs. The relays can either be solid-state or SPDT mechanical in form. Each trip point

    (T1 and T2) can be confi gured to perform one of six different logic functions as

    described below and on the chart on the next page.

    NOTE: The or icon will appear in the upper left area of the display whenever the associated trip point is active.

    Trip Relay Output Types (T1TYPE or T2TYPE): determines the logic function of the output relays (see chart on next page).

    Type 0 or Normally Closed setting will close the trip relay whenever the pressure is less than the Trip Pressure setting.

    Type 1 or Exclusive setting will close the trip relay whenever the pressure is less than the Trip Pressure or greater than the Trip Pressure + Trip Window.

    Type 2 or Normally Closed with Hysteresis setting will close the trip relay when the pressure drops below the Trip Pressure. Once closed, the trip relay

    will remain closed until the pressure becomes greater than the Trip Pressure +

    Trip Window, at which point the trip relay will open. Once open the trip relay

    will remain open until the pressure once again drops below the Trip Pressure

    setting.

    Type 3 or Normally Open setting will close the relay whenever the pressure is greater than the Trip Pressure setting.

    Type 4 or Inclusive setting will close the relay whenever the pressure is within the Trip Window pressure range (greater than the Trip Pressure, less than

    the Trip Pressure + Trip Window).

    Type 5 or Normally Open with Hysteresis is used for pump up applications, or for a low level alarm with hysteresis function. This is the opposite function

    of the Type 2.
