If your vessel requres assstance, contact other vessels and the Coast Guard by sendng a dstress call on Channel 16.

RECOMMENDATION

CLEAN THE TRANSCEIVER THOROUGHLY WITH FRESH WATER after exposure to saltwater, and dry t before opera-ton. Otherwse, the transcever’s keys, swtches and control-lers may become noperable due to salt crystallzaton.

NOTE: DO NOT wash the transcever n water f there s any reason to suspect the waterproofng may not be effectve. For example, n cases where the battery pack rubber seal s damaged, the transcever/battery pack s cracked or broken, or has been dropped, or when the battery pack s detached from the transcever.

PRECAUTIONRWARNING! NEVER connect the transcever to an AC outlet. Ths may pose a fire hazard or result n an electrc shock.

RWARNING! NEVER hold the transcever so that the antenna s very close to, or touchng exposed parts of the body, especally the face or eyes, whle transmttng. The transcever wll perform best f the mcrophone s 5 to 10 cm away from the lps and the transcever s vertcal.

RWARNING! NEVER connect the transcever to a power source other than the BP-223, BP-224, or BP-252. Such a connecton wll run the transcever.

DO NOT use or place the transcever n drect sunlght or n areas wth temperatures below –15°C or above +55°C.

KEEP the transcever out of the reach of chldren.

KEEP the transcever at least 0.9 meters away from your vessel’s magnetc navgaton compass.

BE CAREFUL! The transcever’s rght-sde panel wll become hot when operatng contnuously for long perods.

BE CAREFUL! The transcever meets IPX7* requre-ments for waterproof protecton. However, once the trans-cever has been dropped, waterproof protecton cannot be guaranteed because of possble damage to the transcever's case or the waterproof seal.* Only when the battery pack, top plate and flexble antenna are at-

tached.

MAKE SURE the flexble antenna, top plate and battery pack are securely attached to the transcever, and that the antenna, top plate and battery pack are dry before attach-ment. Exposng the nsde of the transcever to water wll result n serous damage to the transcever.After exposure to water, clean the battery contacts thor-oughly wth fresh water and dry them completely to remove any water or salt resdue.

OPERATING RULES1D Priorities• Read all rules and regulatons pertanng to prortes and

keep an up-to-date copy handy. Safety and dstress calls take prorty over all others.

• You must montor Channel 16 when you are not operatng on another channel.

• False or fraudulent dstress calls are prohbted under law.

D Privacy• Informaton overheard but not ntended for you cannot law-

D Radio licenses(1) SHIP STATION LICENSEWhen your craft s equpped wth a VHF FM transcever, you must have a current rado staton lcense before usng the transcever. It s unlawful to operate a shp staton whch s not lcensed.

Inqure through your dealer or the approprate government agency for a Shp-Radotelephone lcense. Ths lcense ncludes the call sgn whch s your craft’s dentfcaton for rado purposes.

(2) OPERATOR’S LICENSEA restrcted Radotelephone Operator Permt s the lcense most often held by small vessel rado operators when a rado s not requred for safety purposes.

The Restrcted Radotelephone Operator Permt must be posted near the transcever or be kept wth the operator. Only a lcensed rado operator may operate a transcever.

However, non-lcensed ndvduals may talk over a trans-cever f a lcensed operator starts, supervses, ends the call and makes the necessary log entres.

A current copy of the applcable government rules and regu-latons s only requred to be on hand for vessels n whch a rado telephone s compulsory. However, even f you are not requred to have these on hand t s your responsblty to be thoroughly acquanted wth all pertnent rules and regula-tons.

D Battery packTo remove the battery pack:Turn the screw counterclockwse, then pull the battery pack n the drecton of the arrow as shown below.

To attach the battery pack:Insert the battery pack n the IC-M31 completely, then turn the screw clockwse.

NEVER remove or nsert the battery pack when the transcever s wet or soled. Ths may result water or dust gettng nto the transcever/battery pack and may result n the transcever beng damaged.

NOTE: When removng or attachng the battery pack, use a con or flat-blade screwdrver to loosen or tghten the bottom screw.

CAUTION: When attachng or removng a battery pack, make sure the rubber seal s set n the groove of the battery pack correctly. If the seal s not neatly n the groove t may be damaged when attachng the battery pack. If the seal s damaged, waterproofing s not guaranteed.

BASIC OPERATION4 Channel selection

IMPORTANT: Pror to usng the transcever for the frst tme, the battery pack must be fully charged for optmum lfe and operaton. To avod damage to the transcever, turn the power OFF whle chargng.

D Channel 16Channel 16 (Dstress channel) s used for establshng ntal contact wth another staton and for emergency communca-tons. Channel 16 s automatcally montored durng both du-alwatch and tr-watch. Whle standng by, you must montor Channel 16.

q Push [16•C] to select Channel 16.w Push [DIAL] to return to the condton before selectng

Channel 16, or push [Y]/[Z] to select the operatng chan-nel.

D Call channelEach regular channel group has a separate call channel. In addton, the call channel s montored durng tr-watch. The call channels can be re-programmed (p. 11) and are used to store your most often used channels n each channel group for quck recall.

q Push [16•C] for 1 sec. to select the call channel n the se-lected channel group.

• “CALL” and the call channel number appear. • Each channel group may have ts own call channel after pro-

grammng a call channel. See the “Call channel programmng” on p. 11 for detals.

Adjusting the volume levelThe volume level can be adjusted wth [+]/[–].

Push [+]/[–] to adjust the volume level. • “VOL” ndcator starts blnkng. • There are 32 volume levels to choose. • When no key s pushed for 5 sec., the transcever returns to

normal condton.

Adjusting the squelch levelThe IC-M31 has a squelch level adjustment, even though there s no control knob for t. In order to receve sgnals properly, as well as for the scan to functon effectvely, the squelch must be adjusted to the proper level.q Push [SQL•MONI], then adjust the squelch level wth [+]/[–]. - “SQL” ndcator starts blnkng. - There are 11 squelch levels to choose from: “OP” s completely

open; “10” s tght squelch; “1” s loose squelch level. - When no key s pushed for 5 sec., the transcever returns to

normal condton.

w Push [SQL•MONI] agan to return to normal condton.

CONVENIENT!The squelch level adjustment key can be selected from [Y]/[Z] and [+]/[–] wth followng operaton.

• Whle pushng both [SQL•MONI] and [Y], turn the power ON to set [Y]/[Z] to the squelch level adjustment key.

• Whle pushng both [SQL•MONI] and [+], turn the power ON to set [+]/[–] to the squelch level adjustment key.

Receiving and transmittingCAUTION: Transmttng wthout an antenna may damage the transcever.

q Push and hold [PWR] to turn power ON.w Set the volume and squelch levels. Push [SQL•MONI], and push [–] to open the squelch. Push [SQL•MONI] to stop “SQL” ndcator blnkng, then

push [+]/[–] to set the volume level. Push [SQL•MONI], and push [+]/[–] to set the squelch

level.e Push [Y]/[Z] to select the desred channel. - When recevng a sgnal, “ ” appears and audo s emtted

from the speaker. - Further adjustment of the volume may be necessary at ths

pont.r Push [H/L•LOCK] to select the output power f necessary. - “LOW” appears when low power s selected; no ndcaton when

hgh power s selected. - Choose low power to conserve battery power, choose hgh

power for longer dstance communcatons. - Some channels are for low power only.t Push and hold [PTT] to transmt, then speak nto the

mcrophone. - “ ” appears. - Channel 70 cannot be used for transmsson.y Release [PTT] to receve.

IMPORTANT: To maxmze the readablty of your trans-mtted sgnal, pause a few sec. after pushng [PTT], hold the mcrophone 5 to 10 cm from your mouth and speak nto the mcrophone at a normal voce level.

NOTE: The transcever has a power save functon to conserve the battery power. The power save functon ac-tvates automatcally when no sgnal s receved for 5 sec.

Call channel programmingThe call channel key s used to select the default channel, however, you can program your most often-used channel n each channel group for quck recall.

q Push [DIAL] for 1 sec. several tmes to select the desred chan-nel group (INT, USA, ATIS) to be programmed.

w Push [16•C] for 1 sec. to select the call channel.

• “CALL” and call channel number ap-pear.

e Push [16•C] agan for 3 sec. (untl a long beep changes to 2 short beeps) to enter call channel pro-grammng condton.

• Call channel number to be pro-grammed flashes.

r Push [Y]/[Z] to select the desred channel.

t Push [16•C] to program the ds-played channel as the call chan-nel.

• The call channel number stop flashng.

Lock functionThs functon electroncally locks all keys (except for [+]/[–], [PTT], [SQL•MONI] and [H/L•LOCK]) to prevent accdental channel changes and functon access.

Push [H/L•LOCK] for 1 sec. to turn the lock functon ON and OFF.

SCAN OPERATION5 Scan typesScannng s an efficent way to locate sgnals quckly over a wde frequency range. The transcever has prorty scan and normal scan.

In addton, an auto scan functon s avalable for standby convenence.

Set the tag channels (scanned channel) before scannng. Clear the tag channels whch nconvenently stop scannng, such as dgtal communcatons.

PRIORITY SCAN

BATTERY CHARGING8 Battery charging

Please refer to the BC-162 nstructon manual when chargng the BP-252 li-ion battery pack wth the BC-162 desktop charger.

Pror to usng the transcever for the frst tme, the battery pack must be fully charged for optmum lfe and operaton.

CAUTION: To avod damage to the transcever, turn the power OFF whle chargng.

• Recommended temperature range for chargng: +10°C to +40°C• Use the specfed chargers (BC-150, BC-119N and BC-

121N). NEVER use another manufacture’s charger.• Use the suppled AC adapte for BC-150. NEVER use an-

other manufacture’s adapters.

NEVER connect DC power to the battery case when n-stallng alkalne batteres. Such a connecton wll damage the transcever.

Battery cautionsCAUTION! NEVER nsert battery pack/transcever (wth the battery pack attached) wth wet or soled nto the charger. Ths may result n corroson of the charger termnals or damage to the charger. The charger s not waterproof and water can easly get nto t.

NEVER ncnerate used battery pack. Internal battery gas may cause an exploson.

NEVER mmerse batteres n water. If the battery pack becomes wet, be sure to wpe t dry BEFORE attachng t to the transcever.

NEVER short the termnals of the battery pack. Also, cur-rent may flow nto nearby metal objects, such as a necklace, etc. Therefore, be careful when carryng wth, or placng near metal objects, carryng n handbags, etc.

If your battery pack seem to have no capacty even after beng charged, completely dscharge them by leavng the power ON overnght. Then, fully charge the battery pack agan. If the batteres stll do not retan a charge (or very lt-tle), new battery pack must be purchased.
