1 Introduction
The Enraf 873 SmartRadar is a radar based level gauge.
It is designed to measure accurately and reliable the product level
in large storage tanks.
One of the optional functions in the SmartRadar is the hard alarm
output contacts.
The APU board is then equipped with two alarm relays. The alarm
relays can be used as level alarm output or as digital output.
The relays are of the SPDT type and are standard wired as
normally closed (NC). If the normally open (NO) contact is required, the wiring at the APU board has to be
changed from NC to NO (refer to figure 1.1).
Operation of the relays
· Relays as hard alarm output contact:
Both relays can be linked to one of the four level alarms (HA, HH, LA, LL) which can be
programmed in the 873 SmartRadar.
For instance, relay 1 (RL1, contacts at terminal 5 and 6) operates on the high high level
alarm setting (item HH). The linking is realised by software (item settings). The action on
alarm condition (energized or de-energized) can also be obtained via software (item setting).
· Relay as digital output:
Another way of operating the relays is "remote controlled". One item controls both relays.
This item has to be issued by the host or via the 847 PET (Portable Enraf Terminal).
Commissioning
Page 6
2 Commissioning
For information how to program items, refer to the instruction manual 873 SmartRadar or to the Instruction
manual 847 Portable Enraf Terminal.
For the connection of the external circuit wiring, refer to the Installation guide 873 SmartRadar Control Unit &
Antenna Unit.
2.1 Changing contact wiring from NC to NO
Refer to figure 2.1. If the alarm contact wiring has to be changed from normally closed to normally open, then
proceed as follows:
1 Switch off supply of the Control Unit;
2 Open cover of electronic compartment;
3 Remove PCB retaining screw and slide locking latch on the XPU 2 board to the right and remove
XPU 2 board;
4 On the APU board, change over the wiring at terminal strips CN2 and CN3 from NC to NO;
5 Replace XPU 2 board, slide locking latch to the left and place PCB retaining screw;
6 Close electronic compartment cover;
7 Apply mains power.

2.2 Control setting for relay output contacts
Item AX needs to be set (checked) for the proper operation of the alarm relays on the APU board.
Item Name Description
W2= Protection level 2 Enter protection level 2
AX.0.1= Relay mode 12 ASCII characters; default setting: ME - - - - - - - - - -.
With this item control settings are given to the relays.
Item AX is an indexed item consisting of two elements:
element 1 for relay 1;
element 2 for relay 2.
The construction of each element is:
Pos.: Description: Selection:
1 Mounted M relays are mounted
- relays are not mounted
2 Energized E normally energized
D normally de-energized
3 Remote control R relay set-up for remote control
(via item RN)
- relay set-up for level alarm
4 General APU failure G relay activated if general APU failure
- relay not activated if general APU failure
5 Level failure F relay activated if level failure
- relay not activated if level failure
6 Blocked B relay activated if level blocked
- relay not activated if level blocked
7 Out of range O relay activated if level out of range
- relay not activated if level out of range
8 Last valid level L relay activated if last valid level
- relay not activated if last valid level
9 Reduced accuracy R relay activated if reduced accuracy
- relay not activated if reduced accuracy
10 Warning W relay activated if warning
- relay not activated if warning
11,12 Alarm HH relay linked to HH level alarm setting
HA relay linked to HA level alarm setting
LA relay linked to LA level alarm setting
LL relay linked to LL level alarm setting
- - relay not linked to one of the level alarm
settings
EX Exit Exit protection level 2.
Note:
Item AX is an indexed item. Therefore, to program relay 1, give: AX.0.1="desired setting" and to program
relay 2, give: AX.1.1="desired setting". To read the relay mode setting of both relays, give: AX.0.2.
Operation
Page 8
3 Operation
The alarm relays can be remotely controlled by the host.
Item RN controls the relays:
Item Name Description
RN Relay command 8 ASCII characters: (C1, T1, T2, T3, C2, T4, T5, T6).
C1, T1, T2, T3: for relay output 1;
C2, T4, T5, T6: for relay output 2.
Command / data item; not protected. C1 (C2): Relay 1 (2) command:
A Activate relay 1 (2)
D De-activate relay 1 (2)
K Alarm acknowledge
- Don't change
T1, T2, T3 (T4, T5, T6): Relay 1 (2) time data field:
000 - 999: Time setting in seconds for 'Activate' command
only. If the time field is set to 000, the relay is
continuously activated.
For the other commands, dummy values must
be specified (e.g. RN=K000-000).
The 'Acknowledge' command can only be given when the relay is
programmed for level alarm operation (item AX, pos. 3 set on "-"). The
other commands can only be given as the relay is set for remote control
(item AX, pos. 3 set on "R").
The actual relay status can be checked by data item RX (relay status):
Item Name Description
RX Relay status 2 ASCII characters (B0, B1) status information from resp. Relay 1 and
Relay 2. Data item; read only. The characters are the same for relay 1
and 2 and their meaning is: B0 (B1): Relay 1 (2) status:
K Acknowledge alarm
D De-activate relay
A Activate relay
T Relay is active with time-setting
F Relay failure
N Relay is not mounted
Troubleshooting

4 Troubleshooting
The 873 SmartRadar is a self diagnostic instrument. Detected errors can be requested by the host, or by the
847 Portable Enraf Terminal.
Item EE (error APU request; indexed item!) contains three codes for alarm relay malfunction. These are:
18001 Relay 1 failure
18002 Relay 2 failure
18003 Relay 1 and relay 2 failure
Note: The relay status and relay error condition is also signalled on the display of the Control Unit with display
format A and display format B.
