Parasitology 3

Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below: The Diagnostic Parasitology (BIOL 487/587) and the Parasitology courses (467/567) in the existing system catalog differ both in content and structure. The proposed course content:

1) highlights parasites of the Great Plains and Black Hills region 2) focuses on the evolutionary and ecological roles of parasites 3) looks at host-parasite interactions—including changes in host behavior, 4) investigates newly (re-)emerged and medically relevant parasites and vectors 5) includes elements of Archaeoparasitology to provide students with a perspective on the

far-reaching impacts parasites have had on human health through time 6) emphasizes on how parasites are used in research (e.g., engineering, conservation,

medicine) and student research interests. 7) does not focus on the ecological effects of heavy metals, aquatic and terrestrial

ecotoxicity and other topics related to wildlife toxicology (topics covered in the existing Parasitology 567 course).

Structurally, the proposed course:

1) does not have a separate lab section that is required 2) does not have a co-requisite 3) includes more in-depth exams and projects for graduate students, that are an extension

of the undergraduate course topics. 4) Prerequisite of BIOL 151 or permission of instructor

ME 269/269L

Energy Systems Product Development and Design/Lab (2-2) 4

Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below: ME 265/265L provides background in product development and culminates in students designing a simple physical product. ME 269/269L is a product development course focused on energy systems such as fossil, nuclear, and selected renewable sources. In contrast, CBE 467 is a course that focus specifically on design of processes and/or products, or the scale-up of such processes/products, that are not typically considered commodities. The CBE department teaches a capstone design course (CBE 466 Capstone Design for Chemical Engineering), which is traditionally concerned with commodity chemical process design. The proposed new course is dedicated to niche chemicals and/or products where the design of these are distinctly different from commodity or bulk chemicals. They are usually, produced in small quantities, can be high quality / high-value, can be produced through scale-up or batch process, and frequently they may have special or very specific properties. The focus on chemical-based products makes CBE 467 unique from ME 265/265L, and the scope of potential projects is broader than just energy systems products, which differentiates it from ME 269/269L.

1. Provide specific reasons for the proposal of this course and explain how the changes enhance

the curriculum. The chemical and biological industries have grown increasingly complex, with not only large scale or bulk commodity chemical production, but many industries are seeing a shift toward higher value-added products. Part of the distinction of these products from commodity chemicals is in quantity produced, production methods, value, and sometimes the need for unique structures or properties (for examples carbon nano tubes or high-value, low-quantity pharmaceuticals). The design of these processes or specific products can be quite different from traditional commodity chemical process, and thus a dedicated course is needed to best instruct students in these newer areas and products.

☐ Explain any additional minor changes proposed at this time below (if needed): 2.2. Add justification for all changes noted above: 1 credit hour of chemical engineering process safety lecture was added into the previous course content. The content is not new to the chemical engineering curriculum, but rather just an adjustment/removal from another course. This will allow for streamlined and just-in-time delivery of process safety as it might be needed within the design sequence. It also demonstrates the importance of this material by being a stand-alone course now focused on process safety specifically. 1 credit hour of the process equipment design content is moved out and may be included in or as an elective course.
