UMass Amherst Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers 2016-2017 Annual Report
A Letter from the Leadership
Francis Tainter UMass ITE President
We are pleased to submit this 2016-2017 Annual Report for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Stu-
dent Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. Over the past year, our student chapter sought to continue
our storied success through the numerous conferences and meetings throughout the region and nationwide. The past
12 months have been filled with many activities that truly brought our group together.
After being honored with the Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year by the Northeastern District of ITE
in recent years, our chapter aimed to build upon these accomplishments by taking on new challenges within the past
year. In addition to attending conferences and meetings, the chapter focused primarily on philanthropic activities
throughout the Western Massachusetts region. Through the collaboration with other student chapters such as UMass
Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), our chapter was able to give back to the community in the form of tutor-
ing, fundraising, and mentorship.
Many of our successes as a group derive from the vast array of technical activities that UMass ITE partici-
pates in throughout the year. From traffic volume studies, to assisting in state-wide crash data audits, to working the
registration booths at local conferences, our chapter continues to provide excellent service with the ultimate goal of
providing our members with technical experience. These events and activities allowed our members to meet profes-
sionals from around the country, and for those nearing graduation; allowed them to pursue post-graduation opportu-
nities.
With this academic year nearing a close, the UMass ITE student chapter is happy to declare another ex-
tremely successful year. ITE has long been an integral part of the Transportation Engineering student life at UMass
Amherst and we are excited to continue this tradition.
Regards,
UMass ITE

Service Activities
Weekly Girls Inc. Volunteering—Holyoke, MA
Girls Inc. is an organization that works with young women
to help them grow academically and socially through and an
afterschool program. This program is a stigma free environ-
ment where gender, economic, and social barriers do not ex-
ist and these girls are encouraged to work towards an
educated, healthy and independent lifestyle. Eve-
ry Wednesday, members of our ITE and WTS chapters
had the chance to go to the Girls Inc. facility, in Ho-
lyoke MA, and bond with these young women as part
of a tutoring program to help and inspire them in their
schoolwork. Our members have become role models
for these young women and have shown them that
with confidence and reassurance, they too can contin-
ue to grow into smart, strong, independent women at-
tending college, just like many of our members.

Adopt-a-Highway—October 25th, 2016
Several of our student members rallied together to pick up trash on
Route 116 in Hadley, MA near the UMass Amherst campus. The stu-
dent chapter has been responsible for maintaining this segment of
Route 116 for over 10 years. Afterwards, participating members went
to Applebee’s for appetizers and drinks to celebrate a job well done.
Traffic Count Fundraiser—April 27th 2016
Many of our members participated in one of our favorite annual fundraiser in Northampton, MA this past spring. A local consult-
ing firm reached out to our group to assist them in performing turning movement counts (TMC’s) and obtaining automated traf-
fic recorder (ATR) data. Each student was individually trained on TMC count boards in order to collect traffic volumes of a par-
ticular intersection during the peak of hours of a day. The success of this event allows our chapter to fund other social and net-
working events throughout the academic year, while also providing students the opportunity to learn how to collect traffic data in
the field.
Page 10
Crash Data Audit Assistance—November, 2017
Last fall, many of our students assisted Massachusetts Depart-
ment of Transportation and the Massachusetts State Police in
an audit of state-wide crash reports. Along with learning the
various metrics of police crash reporting, our members were
able to contribute to the development of an improved crash
reporting system for Massachusetts.
The 2016 Moving Together Conference—September 29, 2016, Boston, MA
Our student chapter members assisted in the event operations of the MassDOT orga-
nized event at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Students were in charge of checking in and
registering the attendees. When not at the registration table, members were encouraged
to attend the technical sessions throughout the day. Some of our students assisted in
demonstration of our virtual reality simulator. We even had visits from Massachusetts
Secretary of Transportation and the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts!
MassDOT Innovation & Tech Transfer Exchange—March 7-8, 2017, Worcester, MA
Chapter members assisted in event operations for the two day event. Members were responsible for
checking in and registering all attendees as well as scribing technical sessions. Our students attended
technical sessions from advanced bus signal priority to transportation finance and much
more. As seen in the picture on the right, some of our students had the opportunity to try a
new holographic mixed-reality simulator that is currently being implemented by many civil
engineering design firms.
Accessibility Inventory Study—October, 2016
Throughout October 2016, our chapter members assisted in the
completion of an ADA inventory study in the city of North-
ampton, MA. Measurements of every sidewalk and curb cut
were taken for the entire city network. Our students truly en-
joyed the opportunity to assist in a study that will potentially
provide better handicap accessibility for Northampton, MA.
Transportation Trivia Nights—February, 2017
In preparation of the ITE Northeastern District Traffic Bowl, our chapter hosted
numerous transportation trivia nights. UMass ITE members gathered to answer
transportation related questions in the ITE Jeopardy format. Students competed
against one another in an effort to determine our official traffic bowl team for com-
petition. All competition aside, these events were great in building group comradery.

TRB Annual Meeting Orientation—December, 2016
Every year, many of our ITE members attend the Transportation Research
Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Due to the complexity of this
conference, our chapter leaders developed an orientation guide for all of the
1st time attendees. The guide consisted of hotel information, conference loca-
tion, as well as tips for navigating TRB. This meeting allowed for students to
finalize travel plans and address any questions about the meeting.
Development of New Graduate Student Seminar
A new graduate student seminar was developed during the
Spring of 2016. Each week, students participate in technical
workshops on various programs as well as presenting their
current research. This seminar promotes the advancement of
technical and oral skills which are crucial to the success of our
graduate students.
Celebrating 40+ Years of UMass Transit Reception
Many of our members attended a reception in
celebration of “40+ years” of UMass transit.
The transit system dates back to the late 60s,
and has provided excellent service to the Am-
herst, MA community ever since.
ITE Holiday Party—December 14th, 2016
With another successful calendar year in the books, our student chapter decided to
celebrate with a holiday party. Student chapter members, current and former, gath-
ered with faculty members at the local Hangar Pub & Grill for appetizers and drinks.
In addition to enjoying the tabletop and arcade games, the evening was topped off
with a fierce Yankee Swap gift exchange between members.
Page 11
Weekly Transportation Grad Student Dinners
This past fall, we initiated a weekly time-slot where members
would gather for dinner and drinks. Although our students work
diligently throughout the week, it’s nice to have a quick break
every now and then. These weekly dinners allowed our students
to get to know one another while trying out new restaurants in
the area.
NEITE Emerging Professionals Group Event
Our chapter co-hosted a networking and
social event in October 2016. This event
followed the Civil & Environmental Engi-
neering career fair, and students had the op-
portunity to network with UMass alumni
about potential job opportunities.

er sessions, led by researchers from all over the world. In addition, throughout the week there were numerous
opportunities to network with other students and professionals. Five of our student chapter members presented
their research in poster/lectern sessions, including: Cole Fitzpatrick, Nicholas Fournier, Somaye Garmroudi, Far-
noush Khalighi, and Mahour Rahimi.
Our UMass ITE chapter co-hosted our 5th Annual UMass Transportation Center (UMTC) TRB Recep-
tion at the Laughing Man Tavern in D.C. This year’s reception was another great success. The event serves as an
excellent opportunity for students and professionals to interact in a casual environment. In addition to this, our
student chapter attended the ITE Student Reception at ITE Headquarters, where we had the opportunity to so-
cialize with other student chapter members and ITE staff (including current ITE President Shawn Leight) after a
busy day of technical sessions.
