INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY

CRAIGE ROBERTS COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: UNITED STATES

“It makes a qualitative difference in my research that I can focus entirely on a single project here at IAS. With deep concentration new discoveries are possible. During my stay I plan to finish a book for Oxford University Press on topics in semantics that I have been working on for many years. It isnot only the great facilities and services that enhance my work, but also the stimulating talks with my colleagues and the inspiring intellectual life of CEU.”

CENTRAL EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY

The primary mission of CEU’s Institute forAdvanced Study (CEU IAS) is to support excel-lent scholars in their pursuit of knowledge in a multidisciplinary scholarly environment. Each year, CEU IAS invites some 20 research-ers in the social sciences and humanities to spend 3 to 10 months as fellows working on their own research projects. Visiting scholars benefit from the University’s academic and technical resources and from the vibrant cultural and intellectual scene in Budapest. CEU IAS seeks to build connections among its fellows, CEU faculty, and local and regional academic institutions to facilitate high-level interdisciplinary cooperation.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

CEU IAS shares calls for fellowship applica-tions widely in the first days of September including through posts on its website and Facebook page. All candidates must hold a PhD at the time of application and are required to submit a short research proposal, a CV with a list of publications, and an applica-tion form. Certain programs may stipulate additional requirements. In some cases, eligibility restrictions apply to applicants with previous or current CEU affiliations.

Applications are due in mid-October and the first round of evaluations is conducted in November by peer reviewers with relevant expertise. Final decisions are made in January by the CEU IAS International Selection Com-mittee. Applicants are notified by the end of March.

LIFE AT CEU IAS

Fellows participate in weekly events to exchange ideas and support each other’s re-search. They also find opportunities for discussion via social events including movie nights, field trips, dinners, and receptions. Fellows reside in spacious, fully furnished apartments in the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse located at the foot of Castle Hill, a short walk from CEU and downtown Budapest. CEU IAS provides financial and logisti-cal support to fellows interested in organizing workshops and/or inviting co-authors or pertinent speakers. Senior fellows are also eligible for research assistance from CEU PhD students.

FELLOWSHIPS

Core Senior and Junior Fellowships | Core fellowships are available in the socialsciences and humanities to scholars with excellent qualifications, a promising research agenda, and a track record of productivity. Fellowships are offered at the senior and jun-ior levels, junior meaning up to eight years after earning a PhD. There are no geographic or thematic restrictions. All core fellows receive a stipend and complimentary accommo-dation. Competition is intense, with some 500 people applying for 15 to 20 slots each year.

Affiliated Fellowships | Researchers seeking affiliation with CEU IAS are welcome toapply. Affiliated fellows participate in CEU IAS events but are self-funded. Occasion-ally, they are granted accommodation. To be considered, applications must includea letter of intent, a CV, and a research agenda. Decisions are based on availability of space and suitability for the cohort of fellows in residence.

EURIAS Fellowships | One fellowship is available annually at the junior level through the European Network of Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS). For moreinformation, visit the EURIAS website at http://www.2015-2016.eurias-fp.eu/.

CEU Faculty Fellowships | CEU faculty members may apply for a fellowship at CEU IAS in exchange for a small reduction in their teaching load. Faculty fellows participate actively in the life of CEU IAS while pursuing their own research and facilitate connec-tions among fellows and CEU colleagues.

CEU IAS Humanities Initiative Fellowship | CEU IAS selects two candidates eachyear to spend one semester as a core junior fellow at CEU IAS and a second semes-ter as an affiliated fellow while teaching a four-credit course at CEU. “Humanities” is defined broadly.
