Institute for Accountable CareThe Institute for Accountable Care is a new 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is, first, to build the evidence base on the impact of accountable care delivery strategies on both quality and cost, and second, to identify and disseminate best practices in the pursuit of improved population health care. This two-fold mission allows the Institute to quickly translate research findings into actionable resources for health care organizations, whether they work with private commercial payers or public federal and state payers.
Our WorkIn its first year, the Institute for Accountable Care has launched an ambitious research agenda to produce studies and reports that will be available both to care providers, as well as to researchers, policy makers and health care system stakeholders.
To accelerate its research agenda, the Institute is partnering with major academic and philanthropic institutions. The Institute’s research portfolio has four areas of focus:
1. Help health care organizations develop successful strategies for improving care and controlling cost growth;
2. Improve data available to researchers for the analysis of accountable care strategies and performance;
3. Promote collaboration among health care organizations to achieve better health care outcomes; and
4. Test innovative approaches that health care organizations can use to further improve health care while also controlling cost growth.
The Institute’s research activities are in full swing. For example, the Institute is currently conducting a study funded by the SCAN Foundation that is collecting information on ACO strategies for improving care for High Need High Cost individuals. This study will identify early adopters and best practices for potential case studies.
The Institute will produce studies and reports that will be available both to care providers, as well as to researchers, policy makers and health care system stakeholders.

About UsRecognizing the scarcity of objective science on accountable care strategies, the National Association of ACOs (NAACOS) provided initial funding to launch the Institute in 2017, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. While the Institute will benefit from its unique access to NAACOS’ membership, the Institute is a separate organization, and conducts objective and independent research. The two organizations will cooperate on select Institute projects, working with NAACOS members to implement results of research and demonstration projects. NAACOS is a member organization founded in 2013 as the only national organization fostering the growth of ACO models of care.
The Institute is led by Rob Mechanic, MBA, a leading expert on healthcare payment systems and the adaptation of organizations to new payment models.
