How to Select the Right Aron Alpha®

Cyanoacrylate Adhesive

A clear definition of your objectives is key in theselection of the proper adhesive for yourrequirement. Here is a checklist of information weneed to know to provide optimum solutions.

1. MATERIALS TO BE BONDED The chemical name and/or the trade nameof the materials to be adhered are requiredfor our Technical Assistance team. Othermaterial considerations are:• Cleanliness/pre-treatment• Porosity of the substrates• Substrate sensitivity to cyanoacrylates

(i.e. plastics)• Surface area of the bond

2. MATING OF BONDED SURFACEThe gap between the two surfaces to be joined candetermine the viscosity of the cyanoacrylate.Whether the adhesive is applied pre-assembly orpost-assembly on the two surfaces is anotherdetermining factor. Aron Alpha® cyanoacrylateformulas range from wicking (permeation)between two tightly mated surfaces, to thixotropicgel formulations designed to fill gaps in unevensurfaces. Some surfaces may have to bepre-treated by cleaning, sanding, orpriming to ensure a strong, permanentbond.

3. SPEED OF CUREThe manufacturing/assembly process plays apart in the proper selection. High speedautomated equipment generally requires a veryfast setting adhesive, while manual assemblyand the pieces to be bonded may require timefor proper positioning or re-positioning.

4. AESTHETIC REQUIREMENTSVisible bonded joints may require additionalconsideration…such as chlorosis (bloom)potential, stringiness of adhesive, productclarity and method of application.

5. ASSEMBLY ENVIRONMENTTemperature, humidity, ventilation, assembly methods, equipment and materials being bonded can influence theperformance of the adhesive. Less than ideal conditionsshould be factored into your adhesive selection.

6. END-USE ENVIRONMENTThe final use and/or operating environment of theadhered parts is critical in specifying the rightcyanoacrylate. Key conditions to assess are:• Temperature• Humidity• Chemical interaction/corrosion

7. BOND STRESSIf the bonded assembly is to be subjected to stress in itsfinal environment, the proper adhesive becomes criticalto strength and durability. Types of stress to consider are:

• Tensile Load• Compression Load• Shear Load• Impact Load• Peel Load• Cleave loadJoint design can influence the functionality ofthe bond and, in conjunction with the properadhesive selection, bonded parts can providebetter, more cost efficient assembly solutions.

ACHIEVING OPTIMUM BOND STRENGTH

HOW TO APPLY ARON ALPHA® ADHESIVES

1. Remove oil, grease, rust, releaseagents, and other residue fromthe surface to be bonded.Degrease with a suitable solvent.Remove rust or paint withsandpaper.

2. Protective eyewear andpolyethylene gloves should beworn to protect againstaccidental bonding of fingers orspraying adhesive into eyes. Thesubstrates should be dry and at orabove 68°F (20°C). Keep area wellventilated to remove fumes andprevent chlorosis.

3. Use as little adhesive as possibleon the smallest surface to bebonded. Press two surfacestogether to ensure a close fit. Thesetting time will vary with thematerials and the adhesive used. The bond will set within a fewseconds…up to a few minutes atmost. Maximum strength isachieved in 24 hours.

— 7 —

Apply a minimum amount ofadhesive to one surface. Press lightly to let adhesive spread

across surface. Use gel formula forporous or poor-fitting surfaces.

When it is difficult to position two surfacesbecause of fast set time, mate surfaces and apply adrop of glue at the crack. Capillary action willspread the adhesive.

PROPER BONDING SURFACES: Close fitting, nonporous surfaces provide the best bond. A clearance of upto .001 to .003 inches between the bonding surface isideal. A slightly rough surface produces the best bond. For porous surfaces or wider gaps consider a higherviscosity Aron Alpha® adhesive.

PLASTIC CRACKING OR DISSOLVING: Plastics suchas PS, ABS, AS, acrylics, cellulose or polycarbonate resinscan swell, crack or dissolve when exposed tocyanoacrylate liquids. Avoid this by applying a very thinlayer of the fastest setting formula, or use an acceleratorto speed curing.

HIGH TEMPERATURES: Temperatures above 176°F(80°C) will cause failure of most cyanoacrylates. AronAlpha® offers special high temperature resistant adhesives(400X or 400T Series) that retain bond strength up to248°F (120°C).

IMPACT STRENGTH: Cyanoacrylates provide hightensile strength but comparatively poor resistance topeeling or impact loads. Proper design of the adhesivejoint—tongue and groove or sleeve joints, and rubberinserts—will improve bond performance. Aron Alpha®

400X and 400T Series provide significantly higherimpact resistance.

CHLOROSIS (BLOOMING): Cyanoacrylates canproduce a white powder resin when applied in very

humid conditions or when the bonded materials areimmediately placed in a closed space. The cyanoacrylateliquid will volatilize from the bonded area, polymerize inthe adjacent air, and attach itself to the immediate area. There are a number of ways to avoid chlorosis:

• Do not use excessive amounts of the adhesive

• Keep the environment dry and temperatures at 68°F(20°C) or higher.

• Disperse the volatilized monomer with a fan orventilator

• Use an accelerator to speed curing.

• Use Aron Alpha® 800 series, specially formulated tominimize chlorosis

• If chlorosis occurs, remove the deposit with a drycloth, or use a solvent that will not dissolve thesubstrate.

Please refer to the Aron Alpha® CyanoacrylateSelection Guide on the previous pages to aid in theselection of the right Aron Alpha® product type for yourapplication.

Our Technical Service Representatives are available tohelp determine the best Aron Alpha® product type foryour process and environment, and Materials Safety DataSheets (MSDS) on each of the Aron Alpha product typesare available by calling 1-800-338-5192.

CARE AND HANDLING OF ARON ALPHA®

1. Avoid moist or humid conditions. Replace captightly. Store in airtight conditions with a desiccantfor best results. NEVER store Aron Alpha® adhesiveswith an accelerator.

2. Ultraviolet rays (sunshine) will reduce the shelf lifeof cyanoacrylates. High temperatures can deterioratethe original bonding strength of the adhesive. Storein a cool dark location. Refrigeration at 40-50°F (5-10°C) is recommended for extended storage.

3. Aron Alpha® may instantly bond fingers and skin.Caution should be exercised and protective clothingand eyewear worn when using the adhesives. DONOT try to pull bonded skin apart. Skin can be de-bonded with warm soapy water (and gentlemanipulation of the bonded area to break thebond); a releasing agent, acetone, or other solvents, including Aron Alpha® debonder.

4. If Aron Alpha® comes in contact with the eye, immediately wash thoroughly with water and seekmedical attention. NEVER use solvents or rub theeye. Aron Alpha® is a powerful adhesive. Keep awayfrom infants and young children.

5. In a liquid state the adhesive may have a slightlyirritating odor, so provide adequate ventilationwhen using it for a longer period of time. Contactour Technical Assistance Team at 1-800-338-5192 fordetailed Technical Information and Materials SafetyData Sheets (MSDS).

6. Aron Alpha® will produce an exothermic reactionwhen it is polymerized (resinified). The exothermicreaction is particularly strong when large amountsof Aron Alpha® monomer permeates a porousmaterial, such as a woven cloth or urethane rubber, and quickly solidifies. If an accelerator such ascaustic soda or amine is contained in such materials, the exothermic reaction will take place and can giveoff sufficient heat to cause burns.
