Installing R / R Commander Package for Mac System

This document describes 1) how to install R software, 2) how to install R Commander, and 3)

how to fix R Commander problems by downloading and installing XQuartz software.

Install R Software for Mac System

Visit R project web site using the following URL: https://cran.r-project.org/

In R web site, click on the Download R for the system that you use. This instruction is for Mac OS X

system, so you will click on Download R for (Mac) OS X.

In the Download R for Mac OS web page click R-3.4.0.pkg or the most recent version of the package.

If you choose to Save File, you will need to go to Downloads folder and double click on the package file

to start the installation.

From the installation page, click on Continue to start the installation.

In the Read Me step, click on Continue to continue the installation process.


Click Continue in the Software License Agreement step, and click Agree to continue the process.

Click Install button to start the installation.

When you see the following screen then the installation is successful.

To check whether the R package is installed, go to Applications folder and find the R program and

double click R program to start R package.


Install R Commander Package

After installing R software, the next step is to install R Commander. R Commander is written using R

program. Therefore, we need to install R software before installing R Commander. To install R

Commander, you need to first run the R software. The following R Console window is the R software.

You can run R commands and programs in the R Console. Package & Data on the menu bar can be used

for installing R packages and run the R Commander and other R packages.

In order to run R Commander, you may need to download and install XQuartz software. The last part of

this instruction document is about downloading and installing XQuartz.

To install R Commander, click on Packages & Data.


In the R Package Installer, you first click on Get List button to get the list of available R packages.

Before you can see the list of package, you must choose a download mirror site. I chose USA (KS).

You can click on Yes to respond to the following question.

To choose a package to download, I choose RcmdrPlugin.IPSUR. IPSUR is a special R Package with some

additional functions added to the R Commander. If you install RcmdrPlugin.IPSUR, you will also install

the R Commander (Rcmdr).

To install R Commander, click on I will check on RcmdrPlugin.IPSUR and check the Install Dependencies

check box to also install all packages that are needed to run R Commander. Then, click on Install

Selected button to install the selected packages.

After successfully installed the R Commander, you will see the version number in the Installed Version

column.


Fix the R Commander Problems

When you first running the R Commander, it may not work because the Mac window system is not setup

properly. You will need to install additional software (XQuartz) to fix the problem.

To run R Commander, in the R Console click on Packages & Data on menu bar and select Package

Manager.

In the R Package Manager, click on Rcmdr or RcmdrPlugin.IPSUR check box to run R Commander.

Click on Install button in the following window to install other tools that are needed for R Commander.


Check Agree button to agree with the license agreement.

You will then see the following information to let you know the process of this installation.


Installing XQuartz

However, you will see other messages indicating that the R Commander is not ready. You need to

download the install XQuartz for R Commander to work. Please go to R Commander’s author’s web site

to download this package. URL: http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Misc/Rcmdr/installation-notes.html

For Mac users, please read the Mac section. To download and install XQuartz, you will need to click on

the link to it. The URL is https://www.xquartz.org/

In https://www.xquartz.org/ page, click on the XQuartz-2.7.11.dmg to download the software.

Check Open and click on OK button to start downloading the XQuartz file.

You will see the following message during installation.

When you see the following window, you can click on XQuartz.pkg to start installing the software.


Click Continue to continue the process.

Click Continue and then Agree button to agree with the license.

Click Install to start the installation.

Click OK to complete the installation.

Click OK button to acknowledge the message. I generally will log out of my Macbook and log back in

before I try the R Commander.

If you can see the following message that means the installation is successful.

When you run R Commander by click on Rcmdr checkbox you may see the following message. Click Yes

button when you see the following message to allow installing more packages to allow R Commander to

run.

Click OK button in the following window.

When you see the following window, the R Commander is ready to use!!!!!
