    1 Introduction

    The Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Installation Manualdescribes how to install and to configure Microsoft SQLServer 2008 for use with the following SwissQual software:

    NetQual NQDI

    NetQual NQWeb

    NetQual NQView

    SQL Server 2008 Edit ions

    You can use the following versions of SQL Server 2008 with SwissQual software:

    SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition:Contains the complete SQL server functionality

    SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition: Offers the core functionality of the Enterprise Edition, which isusually sufficient for SwissQual software.

    Important: The 32 Bit version supports only up to 4 GB of RAM.

    SQL Server 2008 Express Edition:Offers the core functionality of the Enterprise Edition, but islimited to a maximum database size of 4 GB

    Important: The Express Edition is limited to a database size of 4 GB. You can download SQL Server2008 Express Edition software fromhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads.

    Note: For a detailed description of the hardware and software requirements of the SQL Server 2008Enterprise and Standard Editions, consult the relevant Microsoft documentation.

    2 Installing SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition

    This chapter describes how to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition. The installation procedurefor the Enterprise Edition is very similar to the Standard Edition and is not described.

    To install MS SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition

    1. Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installation disk and in the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup dialog box, click OK.

    Note: If AutoPlay is disabled, right-click the setup.exefile on the CD, and then click Run asadministrator.

    2. If required, install the prerequisite software for the SQL Server 2008 setup program.

    a In Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setupdialog box, click OK.

    b On the Welcomepage for the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Setup , click I have read andACCEPT the terms of the License Agreement , and then click Install.

    c On the License Agreementpage, click I Agree, and then click Next.

    d At the end of the process, restart the computer.

    e Follow the instructions to update Windows Installer.

    3. Open the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup program on the CD again, and start the installation.

    a In the SQL Server Installation Center, click Installation.

    4. Specify the license information.

    a On the Product Keypage, click Enter the product key, type the product key in the box, and thenclick Next.

    5. On the Setup Support Filespage, click Install.

    7. On the Instance Configurationpage, specify the name and the location of the SQL Server instance.

    a In the Instance IDbox, type a name for the instance.

    b In the Instance root directorybox, enter a location for the server instance, and then click Next.

    8. On the Server Configurationpage, specify the configuration for the server.

    a On the Service Accountstab, select NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEMin theAccount Namecolumn forthe SQL Server Agentand the SQL Server Database Engine.

    a On the Error and Usage Reportingpage, click Next.

    3 Installing SQL Server 2008 Express Edit ion

    This chapter describes how to install the MS SQL Server 2008 Express Edition, which has the corefunctionality of the Enterprise Edition, but is limited to a maximum database size of 4 GB.

    You can download SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and the prerequisite software fromhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads.

    The following instructions describe how to install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition R2 Service Pack 1.

    To install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

    1. Double-click the SQL Server 2008 Express Edition setup program, for example,SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe, and start the installation.

    a In the SQL Server Installation Center, click Installation.

    b On the Installationpage, click New installation or add features to an existing installation .

    2. On the Feature Selectionpage, select the features that SwissQual software uses.

    a Select the following check boxes:

    Database Engine Services

    Management Tools Basic

    b Clear the check boxes in front of the following features:

    SQL Server Replication

    SQL Client Connectivity SDK

    c Click Next.

    4 After You Install

    This chapter describes the tasks that you need to perform after you install the SQL server on your computer.

    Installing Service Packs

    After you install the server, you should download and install the relevant service packs from the Microsoftdownload page at:http://www.micosoft.com/downloads.

    Changing the Default Language to English

    For best results with Diversity, you need to set the default language of the SQL server to English.

    To set the default language of an SQL Server to Engl ish

    1. On the Startmenu, clickAl l Prog rams, click Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and then click SQL ServerManagement Studio Express.

    2. In the Connect to Serverwindow, type the name of your server in the Server namebox, and then clickConnect.

    3. In the Object Explorerpane, right-click your SQL server, and then click Properties.

    4. In the Select a pagelist, clickAdvanced .

    5. In the list of properties, ensure that Default Languageis set to English, and then click OK.

    6. On the Filemenu, click Exit.

    Configuring Memory Usage (Standard Edit ion Only)

    The amount of memory that the Standard and Enterprise Editions of the SQL Server can use is limited by themaximum amount of RAM that the operating system supports. For example, Windows XP and Windows

    2008 Server have the following RAM limitations. Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition (32 Bit) supports only up to 4 GB of RAM

    Windows 2008 Server Enterprise Edition (32 Bit) supports up to 64 GB of RAM

    Note: For the 32-Bit servers, you need to edit the boot.inifile of the Windows 2008 Server to increasethe amount of RAM for the SQL server.

    Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition (64 Bit) supports up to 32 GB of RAM

    To increase the amount of RAM for the SQL Server on a 32-bit Windows 2008 server

    1. Login as Administrator on the Windows 2008 server.

    2. Open the C:\boot.inifile in a text editor and locate the following section:

    3. Add the /3 GBswitch to the end of the following line:

    mul t i ( 0) di sk( 0) r di sk( 0) part i t i on( 2) \ WI NNT="????" /3 GB

    4. Save the file and restart Windows.

    Tip: You can also type the following command in a Command Prompt window to increase the available

    memory 3 GB: BCDEDIT /SET IncreaseUserVa 3072To return the setting to the default value, type the following command: BCDEDIT /DELETEIncreaseUserVa

    To specify the amount of RAM that a SQL server uses

    Important: You can only use this procedure for servers with more than 4 GB of RAM.

    1. Open SQL Server Management Studio.

    2. In the Object Explorer, right-click the name of the server, and then click Properties.

    3. In the Select a Pagepanel, click Memory.

    4. Select the Use AWE to allocate memorycheck box.

    5. Specify the minimum and maximum server memory.

    For best results, SwissQual recommends the following memory settings for a computer that operatesexclusively as a SQL server.

    2 GB RAM:Use standard settings

    4 GB RAM:Limit the maximum server memory to 3072 MB of RAM

    8 GB RAM:Limit the maximum server memory to 6144 MB of RAM

    Note: These settings depend on the amount of physical RAM that the server has.

    b In the Minimum server memorybox, enter the minimum amount of RAM in MB.

    c In the Maximum server memorybox, enter the maximum amount of RAM in MB.

    5 Troubleshooting

    This chapter provides solutions to SQL database problems that you might encounter when you useSwissQual software.

    Cannot Import Measurement File

    If you receive a series of error messages when you try to import a measurement file into an NQDI database,you need to change the network protocol settings of the SQL server.

    Import

    To change the network protocol settings of the SQL server

    1. Log in to the computer that hosts the server.

    2. On the Startmenu, clickAl l Prog rams, click Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, click ConfigurationTools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.

    3. In the console tree on the left, expand SQL Server Network Configuration, and then click Protocolsfor MSSQLSERVER.

    4. In the right pane, right-click the following protocols, and then click Enable:

    Named Pipes

    TCP/IP

    5. In the Warningdialog box, click OK.

    6. Exit SQL Server Configuration Manager.
