IMPORTANT

This installation manual is intended to provide information that will enable designers, builders and owners to execute their projects effectively. Not all project types, design requirements and installation scenarios will be covered. The Sculptform team are happy to assist with project-specific solutions by contacting them on 1800 008 828.

Product recommendations throughout the manual are based on proven performance, however this does not mean that alternative uses are not possible. Differing expectations of what is considered “good performance” will vary, and Sculptform takes no responsibility for what may be considered “product failure.” It is important for designers, builders and owners to fully understand the product before making final selections.

It is the responsibility of designers, builders and owners to ensure that the information in this manual is current, by checking with Sculptform or referring to our website sculptform.com.au. As new technology is introduced or industry standards are altered, Sculptform reserves the right to alter existing specifications and delete product without notice.

The use of this manual does not:

› guarantee acceptance or accreditation of a design, material or building solution by any entity authorised to do so under law;

› mean that a design, material or building solution complies with the National Construction Code; or

› absolve the user from complying with any local, State, Territory or Government legal requirements.

Taking delivery

After being tallied and quality checked, each order is carefully packed, strapped and shrink wrapped. Our logistics department then arrange transport directly to your job site.

The following steps should be taken when accepting delivery:

1. Check against the consignment note that you have the correct quantity of packs.

2. Assess the overall condition of the packs. If there is any damage it should be recorded on the delivery document which is returned to the driver and the supplier must be notified immediately.

3. Find the packing slip which will be in a clear plastic sleeve on one of the packs. Check that every item is there and that the quantity is correct.

4. Do a quality check. Sculptform has to supply according to the following product quality supply specification.

5. Notify Sculptform within 7 days of delivery if any items are out of specification.

Onsite storage

Sculptform kiln dry the timber to the midpoint of the average moisture content annual cycle in Australia. For this reason it is normally unnecessary to acclimatise the timber prior to installation. In actual fact it is best to install the timber as soon as possible after machining so that it maintains its accuracy and straightness.

• If possible the cladding should be kept in its original pack until installation. If it is repacked, it should be done the same as the original pack to maintain straightness and quality.

• Ensure that it is at least 50mm above ground and stored on a flat surface to prevent bowing.

• It should be stored in a cool dry place out of the weather until ready to install.

ApprovalHas the designer and/or client given a sign off on the design? Sculptform are able to provide sample boards for final sign-offs. Also make sure you have checked the architectural specification and are familiar with the exact product specification required. This then needs to be checked against the quotation and any variances need to be clarified.

..............................................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................................

Consider access panels and servicesFor typical access panel and service details refer to page 19. It is normally necessary to set out these penetrations to suit the sequence of the batten, whether working with the gap, penetrating through the batten or stop/starting the batten around the penetration.

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

Overall depthThe overall depth is the sum of the heights of the batten, base of clip and Ontrax. Formula: Depth of batten + clip base (3mm) + Ontrax thickness. Please refer to pages 6-9 for all component measurements.

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

Setout including corners, junctions and penetrations

Typical detail drawings for these items are shown on pages 20, 23-27. Setout will normally work away from these fixed points so that you can finish with a full batten if possible. Sculptform do have the capability to evenly spread and fix the clips to the Ontrax to work between two fixed points. An alternative is to use a length of blank Ontrax, some loose clips and screw fasten them to the Ontrax on site as required. It is critical that all clips are in perfect alignment from track to track. Align all Ontrax using a stringline or laser as a datum.

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

The following installation considerations are formatted as a checklist to guide the installer through the process of installation, covering many critical issues that need to be addressed.

.................................................................................................................................

Butt joint alignmentButt joints must occur on the clips. The battens will either need to be cut back to align with the clips or the option of cut to increment needs to be used (battens factory cut to 450mm or 600mm increments). It is important that the battens are perfectly aligned by the clip. For Timber, refer: Interiors on page 16; Exteriors on page 22. For Aluminimum refer to page 29.

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

External applications consider durability In external applications, the effects of harsh weather need to be taken into consideration. These need to include: finish type, Ontrax centres, double clips at butt joins and material types.

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

Expansion allowancesNo specific allowance needs to be made for expansion unless high moisture conditions are anticipated.

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

NOTE: These design considerations are a guide and do not take into account all factors in every application.

1 Referring to the architectural reflected ceiling plans, identify any fixed points, edges and penetrations. These need to be taken into consideration when planning the precise ceiling layout so that they can be worked into the batten sequence. In some cases they can be moved slightly to suit and/or penetrations will need to be detailed to suit. Refer to details page 20 for typical ceiling penetrations etc. Bear in mind the need for structural compensation which may be necessary for these details.

2 Work out the point of reference in the space which the battens need to run parallel with, eg. a long wall or bulkhead. This may highlight some inherent inaccuracies within the space if there are walls out of parallel etc. Some measures may have to be taken at this point to overcome this.

3 Bearing in mind the parallel reference line (point 2.) and the fixed point (point 1. (if applicable)) create a datum line to run across all Ontrax to line up the clips perfectly. The datum line also needs to line up with the sequence increments running off the fixed point bulkhead.

4 Consider the edge details. If it is an express joint or shadow line this will need to be taken into consideration on where to start and also how the sequence measurements work in with the dimension.

5 Work out, by sketching on the reflected ceiling plan, the set out of where all the Ontrax will run. Because of the 600mm increments of the battens, you should set the second Ontrax 600mm from one side and then work across to the other side. This will ensure that all cutting only needs to be done on one side.

6 Install top cross rails from hangers, suitably located perpendicular to where all the ceiling Ontrax will run. Refer to manufacturers’ specifications to ensure that it can support the weight of the ceiling. Refer to pages 6-13 for the specific weights of all Concept Click system

components. Ceiling Ontrax needs to be supported at a minimum of 1200mm centres.

7 Install the Ceiling Ontrax onto the top cross rails according to set out previously mentioned, using the top cross rail clips, working from one side to the other, lining the clips up with the datum line and working in sync with any fixed points. If there is a bulkhead corner profile to be installed, work back from this point.

8 Install all services and penetration items to level.

9 Install corner profiles as required. Refer to page 25.

10 Click in the battens onto the ceiling Ontrax, working from one side to the other, and leaving gaps around penetrations. All battens must be joined on a clip (see below).

11 Install access hatches or panels according to details on page 19.

Ceilings installation procedure

Cut to increment: If the battens are cut to increment, you will need to ensure the distance from the end of the batten to the second Ontrax is the increment length, then the Ontrax run at the increment centres.

Square penetrations

Round penetrations

1. Mark out where your ceiling penetrations will be located (considering the batten sequence).

2. Cut the batten to length around the penetrations.

3. Install cut battens around penetrations. At this point an additional length of Ontrax may need to be installed to support the cut batten. An angle bracket can be used to cover cut ends of battens if applicable.

4. Locate or install penetration.

A cylindrical penetration would be installed in a very similar manner to the square penetration (follow steps above). The size of the penetration would determine whether additional Ontrax would be necessary.

Custom detail around penetrations: forward us CAD of your preferred light/register/sprinkler and we can custom detail around this.

1 Familiarise yourself with the architectural specification, finishes schedule and wall elevations to consider how to meet the architectural design intent with the standard details. Consider whether the battens will need to line up with other surfaces especially ceiling battens.

2 Orientate yourself with the direction of the battens, the direction of the Ontrax, the starting height and the finishing height. Compare this with a typical section detail to work out your exact set out. Consider your starter detail at the bottom and how you will integrate with the skirting (if there is one). A L-profile may be necessary here (particularly for vertical battens to prevent slip). See figure 2.5 and 2.6 on page 22.

3 Install all skirtings, substrate framing and bottom angles if and when applicable.

4 Consider all penetrations for example: return air vents, windows, light switches, fire hose reels and signs. Frame around these items and install reveal angles if specified. Refer to figure 2.7 - 2.10 on page 23 for suggested details.

5 Identify any fixed points you have to start from which need to be integrated with the spacing and sequence of the battens. These may be corners, blade walls or doorways which particularly affect vertical battens. Refer to page 25 for a typical corner set out. These will need to be installed before the Ontrax.

6 If you have a length of wall with the battens being applied vertically between two fixed vertical points, you may need to draw on the Sculptform capability of producing Ontrax with the clips spread over a fixed measurement. By creeping the battens slightly in this way, it keeps the sequence constant while the spacing isn’t noticeably different.

7 Install the Ontrax as shown in the relevant diagrams on page 6, working back from the fixed points as mentioned above. Run plumblines regularly to ensure verticality and that the clips all line up perfectly. Run extra Ontrax in areas where the battens may need extra support especially as in point 4. Timber battens have a maximum overhang of 100mm.

8 Click in the battens by locating one side of the clip in the groove and then rolling the other side in with a click. A rubber faced mallet is an advantage due to the tight tolerance of the clip and the natural character of the product.

9 Trim and fill in battens where necessary around penetrations.

Walls (interior and exterior) installation procedure

Page 22: INSTALLATION MANUAL U-TRAX Designed to replace the standard furring channel and clips into standard suspended ceiling clip. Acoustic panel sits on the flange. Ceilings 73x12mm ACOUSTIC-TRAX

22

A Externally, when joining timber battens, the join must be supported with a double clip. Your

Ontrax will need to be the 90 x 12mm size, and the installer will be required to manually screw on the second clip.

B Externally, for sealing purposes, the Ontrax will need to be caulked along the top, as

shown. When screwing the ontrax to the wall, screws with rubber washers must be used.

C Internally, when installing acoustic panels: 1. Fix all Ontrax on wall at 600mm or 1200mm

centres. 2. Install acoustic panel by inserting one edge into the Ontrax groove, bend and slot into other Ontrax groove. 3. Ensure it is flat.

D When installing vertical battens externally, an aluminium L-profile (Sculptform supplied), will

need to be installed, (shown in fig. 2.5), to prevent the battens from slipping. Timber battens need to have at least a 75mm clearance with the ground.

E Like the external battens, the internal vertical battens will need to have a aluminium

L-profile installed at the base (as shown), unless battens run to the floor. Obviously, if the battens are running horizontally this is unnecessary.

3. Screw the Ontrax onto the stud.

2. Screw the Corner Bracket onto the stud.

4. Clip in your battens.

IMPORTANTThe screws from the previous step have been removed to give the drawings a visual clarity. Do NOT remove the screws in any steps when doing the actual installation.

The screws used in these drawings are indicative only, and may not suit your application type. It’s the builder’s responsibility to select the correct screw for the application.

It’s important to note that while this corner solution covers the majority of vertical batten applications, they’re certainly not the final and absolute solution for every application. If any of these suggestion don’t meet your design intent, or aren’t suitable, please contact one of our technical consultants who will be happy to assist.

When confronted with a ceiling bulkhead, one of the two corner profiles on page 12 can be used. Follow these procedures to install:

1. Work out exactly where the bulkhead will be located.

2. Before installing, the last lengths of ceiling ontrax, a mitre must be cut in the correct position.

3. Once the horizontal ontrax is installed with mitred ends, a standard furring channel suspension clip (eg. Rondo component 237), must be screwed onto both sides of the corner profile.

4. Install the corner profile onto the top of the horizontal ontrax and flush with the mitre.

5. Mitre and install the return ontrax, ensuring the battens maintain a consistent sequence.

6. ‘Click’ in the battens.

End matching is a small tongue and groove profile on the ends of the battens. When engaged, these profiles help to maintain batten alignment at the butt joints.

Note: If your battens are cut-to-increment, cut the tongue off the first batten where butting into a wall, or the ends will be visible.

If your battens are random length, a loose clip is required on the join, as shown below.

End matching

1. Position battens over the clip. 2. Push the tongue and groove together. 3. Click both batten ends into the clip together.

In most applications of Concept Click, installers are faced with a junction; whether it be at a corner, or coming up to a window or door. Below are three methods of installation.

L-profileThe aluminium L-profile method is the cheapest option.

1. Screw L-profile to substrate, flush with the adjoining surface.

2. Then work away from the junction, ensuring the battens meet the L-profile.

Square dressed timberThe square-dressed timber method uses a project specific profile of square-dressed timber to cover the ontrax fixings.

1. Face-fix the square-dressed timber to the substrate, flush with the adjoining surface.

2. Work away from the junction, ensuring the battens maintain sequence.

Door jambThe door jamb method is only for door applications. It uses a square-dressed, job specific timber profile to act as a door jamb as well as your last batten.

1. Face-fix the door jamb onto the substrate.

2. Work back from your door jamb to ensure it works with the sequence.

1. Identify the V-channels on the top of the Batten joiner. These will fit snug into the hollow of the batten, where shown.

2. Then squeeze the two arms on the bottom of the joiner in and ease into the batten hollow. This motion will push the V-channels tight onto the batten wall.

3. Once in, slowly push the joiner into the batten, until it comes to a stop at the centre cut.

4. Repeat the procedure for connecting the batten on the other side.

5. Take some time to ensure the butt joint is tight and fully aligned.

1. Cut a neat mitre in the batten where required, ensuring there are no burrs that would affect the aesthetics of the join.

2. Put adhesive to one side of internal mitre aligning block and slide into horizontal batten.

3. With assistance put horizontal batten into place.

4. Put adhesive into aligning block for vertical batten.

5. Slide vertical batten over the aligning block and ‘click’ into place.

6. Ensure mitre cuts are neatly connected and dispose of any excess adhesive.
