Requirements related to the background

When installing flexible floor coverings it is very important to check the background carefully to assess the following parameters:

strength, especially when the floor will be exposed to huge loads,

evenness, to calculate the necessary amount of leveling compound,

moisture, which has crucial impact on the quality of covering’s adherence to the background. If

the background is in direct contact with the ground, an insulating layer shall be applied under the

concrete layer.

The background for flexible floor coverings shall be:

resistant to loads resulting from floor utilization,

dry, maximum acceptable moisture as measured with the CM method shall not exceed 2,0% CM

for a cement background,

free from any cracks, all damages shall be repaired before applying a leveling compound,

even, no beads are acceptable, the surface shall be smoothed using the leveling compound,

smooth and horizontal, maximum deviation from straight line shall not exceed 1 mm per 1 m of

length and 2 mm per 2m of length,

clean and dust-free, the surface shall be free from any dirt and other contamination.

Before you start work...

Installing floor coverings is allowed providing that certain conditions are met:

all construction works shall be finished, including painting and installation works,

plaster and fillers on walls and floors shall be dry,

you should check the tightness of the heating system, the sanitary system, and the windows,

no additional works, which may dirty the covering, increase air humidity or wall and floor moisture, are allowed in the rooms where Tarkett coverings are to be installed,

floor coverings shall be laid in rooms where:

o ambient temperature is between 17 - 25C,

o background temperature is between 15 - 22C,

o relative air humidity is max. 75%,

you shall make sure that the colour of the covering is correct, its quantity is sufficient, the covering

is not damaged and was manufactured in one batch.

All the materials (covering, skirting boards, adhesive) shall be left in the room for 24 hours. The covering in sheets shall be unrolled to allow it to adhere to the background. The panels and tiles may be conditioned in boxes, placed one on another, maximum in 5 level.

When installing on base with floor warming system, heating shall be switched off at least 48 hours prior and 48 hours after assembly. When warming system is switched on, temperature shall be

increased gradually to maximum 27C. Glues designed for floor warming systems shall be used for assembly.

You should not install the coverings on the following backgrounds: carpets, linoleum, PVC or rubber coverings.

Installation of a covering

Before application we recommend performing a background acceptance inspection on the basis of a written record. If the background and environmental conditions are proper you can start to install the covering.

Installation of a covering in sheets

At the beginning you should design the desired colour arrangement. While planning the demand

for different covering colours, you shall take the quantities provided by a unit package into account. For example, planning one 2 m2 - element may require buying 24 m2 of the covering. The excess of the covering can be used not earlier than when the next investment is made. This involves additional storage costs.

Mark the lines on the pre-prepared background as per the colour arrangement plan (scale 1:1).

Cut the covering so that it matches the lines on the background. Begin installation from the floor

edge, which is the farthest from the room entrance.

To install the covering stick its entire surface to the pre-prepared background using dispersion

acrylic adhesive. To do this you should wind up a half of the covering sheet taking care to prevent the other half from changing its position. Then spread the adhesive over the exposed background using an A3 serrated float.

When the adhesive reaches proper adhesive force press the covering against the wall. Then, roll

the entire surface with an impression roller (weight of 50 – 70 kg).

Any residues of the adhesive, which are visible in the joints, shall be immediately removed with a

wet cloth.

Do not utilise the just-installed covering for at least 48 hours.

Do not remove the expansion joints from the background while applying the covering. Then cover

them with a masking moulding.

The heterogeneous coverings with transparent wear layer shall be laid alternately so that the right

edge of one covering sheet stick to the right edge of the next covering sheet. In this away you can avoid possible differences in shades.

Hot welding

In order to ensure a tight floor it is recommended to bond all covering sheets using a welding rod.

you can start welding 24 hours after sticking the covering. If you start welding too early, there is a risk that the covering edges get unstuck while exposed to a high temperature.

use manual or automatic miller to mill the joints

after welding trim the excessive cord to even the surface. It shall be done in two stages:

initial trimming using a special knife with a guiding bar or a special trimmer. The rod shall be trimmed at the height of 1mm above the covering. This operation can be done if the welding cord is still warm,

final trimming shall be done with a knife with no guide bars. Take care not to damage the covering edges. This operation can be done only if the weld is cold.

Cold bonding

Cold bonding shall be used when coverings are installed in houses or small elements have to be stuck, or using the welding rod would spoil the colour arrangement of the floor:

ensure that the covering elements exactly match one another, clean the joint area,

stick the 2-3 cm-wide adhesive tape to the neighboring edges of the covering elements. Then cut

the tape along the joint line,

enter the tip of the tube of glue into the notch so that it touches the background. Then move the

tube tilted at an angle of 30 along the notch and carefully apply the glue,

when the adhesive dries up (i.e. after about 30 minutes) remove the adhesive tape.

Finishing works

To ensure proper appearance of the entire floor and to meet all the relevant requirements some finishing works have to be performed at the wall-to-floor edge. It can be done through:

forming a skirting from the covering sheet. The flexibility of the covering allows making a skirting

along the wall. Such a skirting should be made whenever a covering is installed in wet rooms or rooms, which have to meet high hygiene requirements. The height of the skirting shall be of at least 10cm. A quarter-round moulding shall be used at the wall-to-floor edge.

using a washboard manufactured by Tarkett Jasło. The washboards shall be properly cut and

adhered to the floor covering and to the wall using a contact adhesive by spreading it on the both stuck surfaces. Only in case of 70 mm wide washboards installed at straight walls it is unnecessary to stick it’s vertical part to the wall because washboards show a tendency to straighten and their vertical parts intrinsically adhere to the wall.

Installation of dissipative and conductive coverings

Installation of coverings with static dissipative properties

Thanks to the special additives, static dissipative properties of the coverings (Norma 43, Centra 43,

Ultra 43, Specjal 43 Plus) can dissipate the charges in its entire volume. In the case of floors where

R2 109 Ω you can follow the same installation procedure as the coverings with the other properties.

Installation of coverings with static conductive properties

Static conduction coverings, where R2 106 are installed by sticking the whole surface of Elektra 43

to the background. At the bottom, the covering has a conductive layer which enables to install the

covering with the use of acrylic adhesive.

In order to properly discharge the static electricity from the covering:

prepare the main grounding bus before the installation. The main grounding bus should

be arranged according to the plan and by the licensed electrician,

stick the cooper tape to the main grounding bus. The tape should be placed transversely to the covering sheets, about 0,20 m from the wall and through the whole width of the room. The amount of tape depends on the length of the room:

- in rooms up to 10 m length – one segment of copper tape

- in rooms from 10 to 20 m length – two segments of copper tape

- in rooms above 20 m length – segments of copper tape should be placed every 20 m

in case of sticking the covering sheets, about 1 m of copper tape should be in arranged in the place of connection,

copper tape should be stuck with the conductive adhesive,

floor covering should be stuck to the background with the use of dispersive acrylic adhesive.

In case of floors where the electrostatic conduction properties are required (R2 106) use the conductive Electra 43 floor covering. The background shall be pre-prepared to transfer electric loads.

The background should be prepared using two methods:

With a conductive layer

The loads accumulating on the covering shall be transferred through a pre-assembled grounding. To do this apply a floating layer of a conducting primer. When the primer dries out place a 1m-long copper strip so that there is one grounding on each 30m2 of the room area. The maximum distance between the strip ends shall not exceed 8 meters in any direction.

Applying copper stripes to form a mesh

Copper strip shall be laid on a concrete base along all the walls at the distance of 200-300 mm from them. Another copper strip should be laid under each covering sheet, along its full length, and connected to the circuit described above at its both ends. All the joints between the copper stripes should be soldered.

One connection to the grounding system should be provided for each 30m2 of the room area, however, the maximum distance between the strip ends should not exceed 8m.

Method with a copper mesh - layout of copper strips

The covering shall be stuck in the same way as it is recommended for other flexible floor coverings. Use adhesive with conductive properties.

To install the covering use the primer and the glue provided by the same manufacturer, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Installation of Sport covering

Sport covering can be used in flexible floors of indoor sport venues to practise various kinds of sports. There is a range of solutions to make a sports floor. Only a proper installation ensures that all the relevant requirements can be satisfied. Installation procedure is the same as in other flexible floor coverings.

Resilient sport floor covering Resilient sport floor covering is based on a wooden support, in which the surface is made from sport floor covering. It is stuck to the particle board and attached to joist. After using concentrated force, the floor with this construction creates relatively large area of flexure, which significantly exceeds the scope of loaded floor.

Construction of Sport 3,2 surface resilient floor :

1. Concrete background

made in accordance with the standards of building industry

resistant to pressures occurring during the in-service time

2. Dump insulation

made from vapour barrier foil

arranged with the use of overlap method, minimum 15 cm

3. Glazing – resilient blocks

Tiles Installation

To install the covering stick its entire surface to the pre-prepared background. The assembly of panel and tile (called hereinafter the elements) floor consists in their gluing to the base with their entire surface. The base for tiles shall be prepared as for lining in sheets.

The following is recommended prior the assembly:

check the background condition,

start placing from a center of room,

mix elements from several boxes to obtain the required shade and pattern,

place loosely individual elements to assess the final floor appearance from various points of view,

place panels and tiles in the whole room observing direction indicated by arrow on the back of elements,

check mechanical damages and color differences in panels and tiles during assembly – producer rejects claims when elements with defects are assembled.

Preliminary works

Measure room in both directions.

Indicate room axes: along the main light source – base line AB and perpendicular to it – base line CD.

Place loosely, starting from the room center:

tiles – along the determined AB and CD base lines,

panels – the first row with the longer edge along the determined AB line, the second row with offset in relation to the first one, then place panels perpendicularly to the AB base line.

Check, if it is necessary to place small strip on perimeter. If yes, shift the determined base lines parallel to the room axis so to have rims prepared with bigger elements.

Gluing

Gluing shall be made after precise determination of the base lines.

Apply adhesive in strip a little wider than width of one row of elements.

Start to glue individual elements when glue obtains proper working parameters.

Gluing shall be started from the base lines crossing point.

Successive elements:

Tiles – glue exactly along the determined base lines AB and CD alternatively – on left and right side of the first element.

Panels – glue the first row exactly along the determined AB base line, alternatively on left and right side of the first element, then glue rows with shifting in relation to the previous row.

Carefully press each element on the whole surface against the background, starting from the center and pushing out air to the edge.

Then gradually fill the whole floor segment, moving from the base lines, excluding border areas.

The possible adhesive protrusion from joints or adhesive which stains surface of elements shall be removed with damp cloth systematically.

When the floor segment is finished, roll it in both directions with the divided roller, weight ca 70 kg.

Repeat this procedure on next segments till the whole main floor panel is finished.

Cutting of perimeter elements

The perimeter elements may be cut by various methods, depending on room shape and wall rectilinear.

Overlap method

The overlap method is used when walls are parallel to the main panel edge and for small curvature.

The following is necessary to use this method:

place element to be cut exactly on the last element of the main panel, carefully matching pattern and color,

the next element, which will be used as the template, place partially on element to be cut and simultaneously move it to the wall,

using the template element as a rule, draw line on element to be cut, and then cut off its excess,

prior the glue application, check if the cut element is matched to the wall,

repeat this procedure along a whole wall.

Cutting of perimeter elements

Method with tools for layout

This method is used when wall is not parallel to the main panel edge or for curved walls.

Procedure:

place element to be cut exactly on the last element of the main panel, carefully matching pattern

and color,

place a layout tool to the size of the placed element,

transfer wall profile on element to be cut, holding the layout tool vertically and perpendicularly in

relation to the element edge,

cut off the element along the drawn line and prior the glue application check matching to the wall,

repeat this procedure along a whole wall.

Method with level shear

This method is used when wall is parallel to the main panel edge.

Procedure:

ensure that plate in lower part of the level shear is released,

place the lever shear on edge of the last element of the main panel,

lower the fastening plate,

place element to be cut in the lever shear with face side facing down and move the element edge

against the wall, paying attention on pattern and color,

cut off element to the required size, pressing down the cutting edge with holder,

check the matching of the cut element,

repeat this procedure along a whole wall.

Remark: It is possible to use both overlap and layout tool methods to cut elements with complex shapes, e.g. at the door frames. The contour templates can be also used.

Gluing of border elements

Check the matching of row of the cut border elements.

Move the cut elements on the main panel, observing their sequence.

Apply adhesive on the base.

When adhesive has its proper parameters, glue the individual border elements.

Remove excess of glue systematically.

Roll down the glued elements in both direction, use manual roller in hard accessible areas.

Repeat this procedure along all walls.

Repeat floor rolling after 1-4 hours.

Placing elements on large surface

In the case of large surface, where it’s difficult to determine both axes, the so-called pyramid method may be used to place the main panel. This method consists in placing the successive tiles on both sides of single determined axis in sequence presented on drawing.

Determine the center point to avoid large wastes on room edges.

Start tile placing in pyramid on one side of the base line.

Repeat this procedure on the other side of the base line.

Gradually increase such pyramid, to fill the whole main panel in room.

Figures indicate tile placing sequence

Final works

Floor at the walls may be finished with wooden strip or plastic strip.

Protect the finished floor against high traffic for 24 hour from assembly.

Wash the floor 48 hours after assembly.

Installation floor coverings with wall coverings

In wet rooms or rooms, which have to meet high hygiene requirements floor coverings shall be installed as it is recommended for the other rooms. Follow the relevant installation procedure. However, some additional rules have to be adhered to:

a wall skirting shall be made. The skirting height shall be at least 10cm. A quarter-round moulding shall be used at the wall-to-floor edge,

all joints shall be welded. Only if it is not possible to weld, the joints shall be made using a cold bonding method,

if the Rondo 42 covering (with an embossed pattern) is used and it is planned to overlap the covering with a wall lining, cut the embossed elements of the covering to the width of the overlap,

in the areas exposed to water the floor inclination towards the floor drain shall not be lower than 1,0%,

in other wet rooms, which are not directly exposed to water the floor inclination towards the floor drain shall not be lower than 0,3%,

while adhering the floor covering to the doorstep, make sure that at least 15mm of the covering is turned down onto the doorstep.

Installation of the wall covering

Requirements related to the wall

The wall, which the wall lining will be adhered to, shall be:

even – both the wall and all corners have to be checked with a 2m-rule. If more than two gaps of at least 2mm are detected along the rule length, the wall condition is not acceptable,

perpendicular - the deviation shall not exceed 2 mm along the entire wall height,

smooth – the background shall be as smooth as possible. No surface beads are allowed. The entire surface shall be smoothed using a levelling compound for wet rooms. Before applying the levelling compound all bigger irregularities shall be filled with a cement-based filler. Gypsum-based fillers are not durable enough for this application. The wall surface quality shall be uniform, without any smoother or rougher areas. Areas of different quality shall be corrected by rubbing or applying a filler. In order to achieve required evenness and smoothness plasterboards can be used (in wet rooms the plasterboards shall be waterproof),

resistant – the wall shall be free of cracks, peels, and chips,

dry – maximum acceptable moisture as measured with the CM method shall not exceed 2,0% CM for a cement background and 0,5% CM for a gypsum background. The moisture needs to be measured prior to starting the installation works. The only reliable methods are the CM method and the drier method; the other methods, e.g. measuring the electric conductivity, shall serve only as an auxiliary method,

clean – the background shall be free of any dirt. Oil or grease shall be removed by scraping and filling or by cleaning with detergents.

Before you start work...

Installing wall covering is allowed providing that certain conditions are met:

all construction works shall be finished, plaster and fillers on walls and floors shall be dry,

you should check the tightness of the heating system, the sanitary system, and the windows,

the floor covering is installed with a 10cm-high skirting.

No additional works, which may increase air humidity or wall and floor moisture, are allowed in the rooms where the wall lining is to be installed.

The wall covering shall be laid in rooms where:

ambient temperature is between 17 - 25C

wall temperature is between 15 - 22C

relative air humidity is max. 75%

When the outdoor temperature is low, use portable heaters to ensure a proper room temperature both during the installation and while the adhesive setting takes place.

Prior to installation you should:

protect all exposed metal elements (pipes, supports, etc.) from corrosion through applying a anti-corrosive layer,

disassemble and protect all fixed elements of furniture (wash-bowls, showers, cabins),

make sure that the colour of the lining is correct, its quantity is sufficient, the covering is not damaged and was manufactured in one batch.

All the materials (lining, skirting boards, adhesive) shall be left in the room for 24 hours. The lining shall be unrolled to allow it to adhere to the background.

Wall covering installation

Wall covering can be applied both horizontally and vertically.

Before sticking the lining mark all the lines on the pre-prepared wall as per the colour arrangement plan (scale 1:1). To draw the bottom horizontal line take the following into account:

the height of the skirting formed by the covering (when the joint is made through welding),

the height of the skirting formed by the covering and the width of the lining overlap, which should be at least 30 mm (in case of the overlap joint is applied).

To assemble the lining stick the entire surface of the lining sheets to the pre-prepared wall. Use highly-durable dispersion adhesives for sticking the lining to walls. Contact adhesives shall be applied to corner mouldings and washboards. Dispersion adhesives shall be spread over the wall surface while contact adhesives shall be applied to both faces, i.e. to the wall and the lining or moulding. After the adhesive is spread, it is necessary to allow some time until it reaches proper adhesive force. This time is called an “open drying time” and depends on the ambient conditions and the type of the adhesive.

When the adhesive reaches proper adhesive force place the lining sheets on the wall and fit them exactly to the lines marked. Take care to avoid curling and do not leave any air bubbles under the lining. Then, press the lining against the wall carefully to avoid any damage to the lining. If the background is very absorptive, ground the wall surface first.

If the lining is applied horizontally, its quantity shall be sufficient to finish the room using one lining sheet. If it is necessary to bond two lining sheets together, please follow the recommendations below.

1. External and internal corner

It is recommended to make external and internal corners using one lining sheet. If a corner is out of the perpendicular, it should be covered with the lining. The joint to compensate this deviation shall be made at min. 20 cm from the corner.

Additional recommendations:

if it is planned to weld any horizontal joints of the lining sheets, a quarter-round moulding shall be stuck to the internal corner prior to applying the lining. In this way a camber is obtained under the lining to facilitate welding,

to fit the lining to the external corner easily, you should use a hand-operated miller to shape the bottom part of the lining in the line of folding.

To mount corners mouldings and washboards the contact adhesives shall be used. In this case the adhesive shall be applied to both contact faces.

Note: Do not make vertical lining joints in room corners.

2. Vertical joint

A tight vertical joint of lining sheets can be made by means of:

hot welding,

an overlap joint.

3. Horizontal joint

A tight vertical joint of lining sheets can be made by means of:

hot welding,

overlap joint.

In case of overlap joints the upper lining sheet shall overlap the lower one.

4. End of wall lining

Ends of the wall lining at the top edge of the lining sheet or at the door-way can be made using a silicon gel of an appropriate colour.

5. Wall-to-floor lining joint

A tight wall-to-floor lining joint can be made by means of

an overlap joint-in this case the wall lining should overlap onto the floor covering,

hot welding.

It may be used when the difference between the wall and floor lining thickness is not greater than 0,4 mm

Description of:

welded joint

Prior to welding the lining sheets shall be stuck to the wall without the gap. After min. 24 hours use a

hand groover to make grooves along the sheet edges. Then, weld the sheets using a 3 mm welding rod. Upon welding trim the excess of the cord to ensure smooth and flat surface. As the lining thickness is small be extremely careful no to damage the lining surface.

overlap joint

The entire lining shall be stuck to the wall – except one sheet, on which a 30mm-wide overlap shall be left. Use a contact adhesive to make this joint.
