1.2 FUEL/FIRING WARNINGS

“NEVER” burn materials other thancoal or split and dried wood logs. Achimney fire or heat exchanger fail-ure could result. This includes largeamounts of corrugated boxes, woodshavings, paper scraps, driedChristmas trees, coke, garbage,tires, or other burnable products.

When and if the chimney pipes orconnectors reach 500 degre e sfahrenheit (maximum temperature),the stove is being over-fired. We rec-ommend the purchase of a HarmanMagnetic Te m p e r a t u re Gauge tomonitor the stove and stack temper-atures relative to the amount of draftthe customer permits the stove tooperate.

It has been verified that creosote willignite at 650 degrees fahrenheit. Itis the owner’s responsibility to fol-low these recommendations.

This stove consumes air when it isburning. It is advisable that a win-dow in the vicinity be opened slight-ly while stove is burning if yourhouse is tightly sealed and insulated.(Information contained in this man-ual is manufacturer’s recommenda-tions and if there is any differencebetween our recommendations andlocal code requirements, we suggestfollowing local code requirements.)

1.3 Curing Paint

During the first few hours of burn-ing, a blue smoke will be observedrising from the painted surface ofthe stove. It is advisable to increasethe amount of fresh air in the roomduring this breaking-in period. Thismay be achieved by opening doors,windows, etc. Don’t be alarmed,this is normal.

1.4 Mobile Home

Harman Stoves are not approved orrecommended for mobile homes.

2.1 Heat Collector

Optional Heat Collector can beattached to the top of the stove todirect heat from the spiral chamberand stove top into a duct. CAU-TION: The duct rising off the heatcollector should be kept ten inchesaway from combustible materials forthe first fifteen feet from the stove.This includes floor joists, suspendedceilings, etc. Clearances may bereduced if fireproof material such asasbestos board or sheet metal withair space is used to protect com-bustibles. The heat collector slideson easily from the front of the unit.(See diagram on following page.)

4. Chimney4.1 Types of Chimneys

The chimney is one of the mostimportant, yet most neglected andmisunderstood portion of any solidfuel burning installation. We do notrecommend that the stove be con-nected to a chimney with otherheating devices.

THE STOVE MUST BE CON-NECTED TO ITS OWN TILE-LINED FLUE. A MINIMUM FLUESIZE OF 8" X 8" IS NECESSARYFOR PROPER OPERATION ANDAPPROVED FOR ALL FUELS.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTA N C E SSHOULD A MANUAL FLUEDAMPER BE INSTALLED IN THESMOKE PIPE BETWEEN STOVEAND CHIMNEY!

No damper, heat saver, or automat-ic vent damper device should beinstalled in or on the smoke pipe.

NO O THE R APP L IAN CESSHOULD BE VENTED TO THISFLUE!

CAUTION: THE CHIMNEY MUSTBE A CLASS “A” CHIMNEY INGOOD OPERATION CONDITION.

NOTE: THE USE OF ALUMINUMTYPE “B” GAS VENT FOR SOLIDFUELS IS UNSAFE AND PROHIB-ITED BY THE NATIONAL FIREPROTECTION ASSOCIAT I O NCODE.

There are three types of class “A”chimneys:

A. Masonry with tile liner toinclude brick or stone. It must besupported on grade level founda-tion.

B. Insulated Class “A” manufac-tured chimney, listed or certified bya national test agency.

C. Triple Wall Metal Class “A”chimney, listed or certified by anational test agency.

If your masonry chimney has notbeen used for some time, have itinspected by a qualified person(building inspector, fire departmentpersonnel, etc.). If a listed or certi-fied manufactured chimney is to beused, make certain it is installed inaccordance with the manufacturer’sinstructions and all local and statecodes. See Figure No. 1 ofManufactured Chimney Installationsand Figure No. 2 of masonryChimney (note roof clearance) inaccordance with NFPA 211.

4.2 Common Chimney Pro b l e m s

In order to have a proper operatingsolid fuel heating system, the chim-ney must be capable of providingthe draft required.

The minimum required draft is .06inches W.C. (water column). Thismust be measured using a draftgauge.

If the chimney cannot supply thisconstant draft, the unit will notoperate properly.

In some installations, a barometricdraft regulator may be used andproperly adjusted to compensate forexcessive draft.

IMPORTANT!

Whenever you measure the draft,the stove must be operating and suf-ficient time given for the chimneyand stove to warm up. This shouldtake a minimum of thirty minutes.

The draft reading is taken 18" upfrom the center of the stove flueoutlet in the smoke pipe.

REASONS for insufficient draftreadings:

A. Leaky Chimney - Air leaking ina round a loose fitting clean-outdoor, flue pipes not tight at thejoints, improper plug openings ordefective masonry.

B. Chimney Improper Height -Chimney does not extend throughthe roof to a sufficient height to pro-mote sufficient draft or causes adown drafting condition to takeplace. (See Figure No. 3)

C. Obstructions in the chimney.Check prior to using by holding amirror in chimney clean-out door.This will give a view of the chimney.

D. Trees or Other TopographicalBarriers - Impeding the chimneysoperation or causing a down draftcondition to exist. This can also becaused by adjacent buildings or theroof of the same structure where thechimney is not high enough. (SeeFigure No. 3)Figure 2

NOTE: The Chimney on the houseillustrated is too low. It should beraised to compensate for drafts.

E. Chimney Size - Chimney is notproperly sized to adequately ventthe appliance. It is either too smallor too large.

F. Chimney Offsets - Chimneyswith offsets should not be used.They cause an obstruction to draftas well as a place for debris to col-lect.

G. Elbow Restrictions - The fluepipe is connected to the chimneywith too many elbows, reducing thedraft the chimney can provide.

H. Multiple Venting - No more thanone device shall vent into the samechimney flue.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGTO REMEMBER ABOUT CHIM-NEYS IS THEIR NEED FOR MAIN-TENANCE AND CLEANING. IFCHIMNEYS ARE NOT CLEANEDON A FREQUENT BASIS, IT WILLAFFECT THE DRAFT, AS WELLAS BEING A CONTRIBUTINGCAUSE TO A CHIMNEY FIRE.

CAUTION

ANYTIME YOU HAVE A CHIM-NEY FIRE THE FOLLOWINGPOINTS SHOULD BEOBSERVED:

1. BE SURE EVERYONE IS OUTOF THE HOUSE.

2. CALL THE FIRE DEPA RT-MENT.

3. CLOSE DOWN DRAFTDAMPER ON STOVE.

AFTER THE FIRE IS EXTIN-GUISHED, DO NOT USE THECHIMNEY UNTIL A QUALIFIEDPERSON HAS INSPECTED YOURCHIMNEY.

4.3 What To Do When You Have A Problem

A. Smoke Puffs From Your Stove:

1. Check the chimney draft. With agood fire burning, the chimneyshould supply .06" updraft.

2. Check draft controls for properoperation.

3. Check the smoke pipe and besure it is clean.

4. Chimney may be too low.Increase the height. Make sure thechimney is structurally sound.

5. Add more air to the room. Yourhome may be so airtight that notenough oxygen is reaching the fire.

6. REMEMBER, open the draftcontrols and crack the fire doorslightly before recharging the fire

chamber or checking the fire.

SPECIAL WARNING: NEVEROPERATE YOUR STOVE WITHTHE FIRE OR ASH DOOR OPEN!

7. Check the smoke pipe andmake certain each joint is tight andthe connections to the stove andchimney are airtight.

8. Check the ashes. Ashpan andf i re compartment may be over-loaded with ashes.

9. Check type of wood beingburned. If too green or wet wood isbeing used, it may cause excessivesmoking and creosote.

10. Check your chimney for downdrafts. This is caused by air currentsbeing deflected down the chimneyfrom higher objects, such as trees,building and hills. This problem canusually be corrected with an open-vented chimney cap.

11. Make sure the chimney clean-out door is tightly closed and sealed.

12. If other fuel-burning devices areconnected to the chimney they maybe causing draft problems. Thismust be corrected by your heatingcontractor.

4.4 Chimney Details

Chimney Liners - Most of the cus-tomer inquiries received are prob-lems caused by poor, or in somecases, excessive draft. A result ofpoor draft could be creosote, back-puffing, and smoky firebox whenloading. Indications of excessivedraft are burning too much fuel andhigh stack temperatures.

The most common cause of poordraft is an improperly sized flueliner. We recommend that the chim-ney liner’s inside dimensions be atleast as large as the appliance’s col-lar size and no larger than 125% ofthe collar for a round flue. Forinstance, an 8" furnace collar is 50square inches; increased by 25"%would be 63 square inches, orapproximately a 9" round flue. Ingeneral for round liners we recom-mend that they not be increasedmore than 1" from that of theHarman’s collar size. The reason forthe above is that Harman appli-ances are designed to produce themaximum amount of heat peramount of fuel burned. A a result,the flue gas temperature is lowerthan for some similar equipment.

TO SUMMARIZE, A HEAT I N GUNIT CAN PERFORM ONLY ASWELL AS ITS VENTING SYSTEMWILL ALLOW IT.

5. Creosoteand Soot

5.1 General and Specific C reosote Maintenance Wa rn i n g s

One of the most critical aspects ofoperating a woodburning stove isthe control of creosote and soot.This is especially important whenthere is a low demand for heat, suchas in the fall or spring. A goodunderstanding of the causes andcures for excess creosote or sootformation is essential to the opera-tion of the stove.

Your stove and for that matter, alltypes and makes of woodburningequipment will give trouble with cre-osote deposits under certain condi-tions. You should be aware of theseconditions and avoid them.

When wood is burned slowly, it pro-duces acetic and other pyroligneousacids that combine with expelledmoisture to form creosote. Highlycombustible in its solid and semi-liq-uid states, creosote is present in thegases given off by burning wood.Creosote may build to a consider-able thickness on the interior sur-face of the chimney and stove pipesubsequently reducing draft. ASERIOUS FIRE MAY BE IGNITEDIF A SUFFICIENT CREOSOTEBUILDUP IS PERMITTED.

Creosote condenses from the fluegases more quickly when the tem-perature of those gases is low. Theactual amount of creosote depositeddepends on (1) the amount of mois-ture in the flue gases, (2) the tem-perature of the stack, (3) the rate atwhich the wood is burned, (4) theamount of draft in the stack, and (5)how completely the combustible ele-ments in the flue gases have beenburned in the combustion chamber.Most problems with creosote aredue to insufficiently dry wood, poorchimneys with low draft and cold

walls, and/or a low rate of burningwhen little heat is required duringthe spring and fall months.

Moisture in the Flue Gases May BeControlled by:

A. Using properly seasoned fire-wood.

B. Mixing small pieces with everyfull load.

C. Never using only large (usuallyless dry) wood during mild weatherwhen combustion is relatively slow.

The Temperature in the Stack Maybe Controlled by:

A. Using as short a length ofstovepipe as possible between thestove and the chimney.

B. Using an insulated flue pipe toconnect the stove to the chimney.

The Amount of Draft in the StackMay be controlled by:

A . Having as few bends as possible.

B. Insuring adequate chimneyheight and preventing air leaks.

C. Eliminating external obstruc-tions in the chimney outlet.

D. Having only one appliance perflue.

YOU MUST CHECK YOURCHIMNEY FLUE PIPE CONNEC-TOR FREQUENTLY WHEN FIRSTSTARTING TO BURN WOOD TODETERMINE THE AMOUNT OFCHIMNEY MAINTENANCE (CLEAN-ING) THAT WILL BE REQUIRED.THIS OF COURSE, IS ALSODEPENDENT ON WOOD TYPE,MOISTURE, AND IN GENERAL,HOW THE STOVE IS USED.

The chimney connector and chim-ney should be inspected at leasttwice monthly during the heatingseason to determine if a creosote

build-up has occurred.

If creosote has accumulated, itshould be removed to reduce therisk of a chimney fire.

If an over-fire situation should occur,be sure ash door and fire door areclosed.

In the event of a soot fire, call yourfire department immediately, andmake sure the ash door, fire doorand drafts are closed.

6. Electrical6.1 Wa rn i n g s

Turn off electric power at fuse boxor circuit breaker panel before mak-ing any line voltage connections.Follow local electrical codes. Besure to route power so that it does-n’t come in contact with the stove.

7. Fuel7.1 F i rewood and Coal Fuel

I n f o rmation Sheet

The energy content of most hard-woods, and all but a few softwoods,is generally estimated to be around8,6000 BTU’s per pound at zerop e rcent moisture content. This,however, would not be a practicalvalue to use in the calculation of fuelneeded to meet a given heat load.All the BTU’s available in wood arenot generated as usable, sensibleheat. Much of this heat is dependenton the appliance’s efficiency and isrequired in the venting system togenerate a draft. Also, firewood isnot available at zero percent mois-ture. Well seasoned, sheltered woodcontains an approximate minimummoisture of 20%, where the same

wood left to the elements may havea moisture content as high as 80%.

One cubic foot of hardwood weighsabout 45 pounds. One cubic foot ofwater weighs 62.5 pounds, and theamount of energy required to evap-orate only one pound of this wateris over 1,000 BTU’s. If the samecubic foot of hardwood has a mois-ture content of 80%, it would weighapproximately 80 pounds, and theenergy lost in boiling off this mois-ture could theoretically be as high as35,000 BTU’s, not to mention asore back from carrying the soggystuff.

In summary, burn only well-sea-soned dry wood. Wood must notonly be of a reasonable quality andseasoned, but to get its maximumheat energy output, it must be dry.

S e a s o n i n g - unseasoned (gre e n )wood, when used as fuel, offersmany potential problems. It is ofcourse much heavier than seasonedwood because of its high moisturecontent. When burned, it losesmuch of its heat value in boiling offthis moisture. It is difficult to igniteand is sometimes hard to keep burn-ing. But its major evil is creosote, aswill be discussed in the next section.Seasoning is easy! The cutting,stacking, and putting it under coveris the hard part; but once this isdone, just leave it alone. leave italone for at least one year -- bettertwo. If wood is cut in the dead ofwinter, little seasoning takes placeuntil the temperature rises abovef reezing. If the wood is store dunprotected, minimal seasoning canoccur. Moisture from high humidity,rain, snow, dew, etc., will beabsorbed into the wood and thenmust be evaporated before the sea-soning process can begin again. Ifyou live in an area where the win-ters are long and hard, you canexpect your wood to take longer toseason than wood stored in a moretemperate climate. However, aswood is susceptible rot, it can be

stored too long. Rotten wood con-tains less heat energy than goodwood, so the more advanced therotting, the less BTU’s can bederived from the fuel.

Choosing a kind of firewood to burnin your stove naturally depends onwhat is available to you. If all youcan obtain is softwood, obviously,that will be your choice.

Softwoods like pine, spruce, and firare easy to ignite because they areresinous. They burn rapidly with ahot flame. However, since a firebuilt entirely of softwoods burns outquickly, it requires frequent atten-tion and replenishment.

This characteristic of softwoods canbe a boon, if you want a quickwarming fire or a short fire that willburn out before you go to bed.

If you do have a choice, for a longlasting fire, it is best to use the heav-ier hardwoods such as ash, beech,birch, maple and oak.

By mixing softwoods with hard-woods, you can achieve an easilyignited and long lasting fire.

So that you have an idea of howfirewood is described and sold, youshould first know that the mostcommon measure is the standardcord. A cord is a well-stacked pile oflogs 4 ft. by 4 ft. by 8 ft. Wood isalso sold by the ton.

If you buy wood by weight, look forthe driest wood. Don’t pay for extrawater! Small twigs and branchesfound in your yard and wood wastesfound around sawmills are alsogood. When you buy wood, requesta mixture of wood species anddiameter sizes. the wood should begenerally sound, but don’t worryabout small pockets of rotten woodthat you may find in logs.

8. Grates8.1 Grate System and Contro l s

A. Heavy-Duty Cast Iron GrateSystem - The functions of a gratesystem are to support the coal andat the same time provide air flowt h rough the grates to the coal.Harman grates have a maximumamount of air flow to produce aneven burning fire. Another functionis to remove the ash from theunburned coal by grinding, breakingor shaking them until the ashes fallthrough the grates. Harman gratesprovide a variable amount of grind-ing action controlled by the move-ment of a long shaker-lever locatedon the left side of the stove. Gratesare removable without tools.

B. Burns Three sizes of Anthracite- You can burn pea, nut or stovecoal with these stoves.

9.1 Unpacking and Inspection of Parts

Inspect the unit for visible damage.Stove parts and accessories arepackaged inside the stove. It is rec-ommended that the owner removethese parts prior to proceeding withthe installation to avoid parts dam-age.

NOTE: The doors, grates, and fire-brick can be easily removed to light-en the weight prior to moving andplacing the stove.

9.2 Warnings

All stoves must be installed in accor-dance with state and local buildingcodes.

9.3 Locating The Stove

Locate the stove as close to thechimney or flue as possible.

Locate stove where there is suffi-cient air supply for ventilation andproper combustion to comply withthe minimum clearance required forfire protection and accessibility.

9.4 General Information

Installation Checklist:

A. Have only a qualified stoveinstaller install the stove.

4. Multiple venting should beavoided wherever possible. Neverinstall your stove into the same ventas a gas furnace.

5. Check for proper roof clear-ances. See page 5 and check yourlocal codes.

6. Chimney must be two feet high-er than anything ten feet around it.

D. Flue Pipe

1. Chimney should be within 8 feetof the stove.

2. No more than two 90 degreeelbows should be used.

E. Check for Proper Draft

The chimney used must be capableof providing a minimum of .06 inch-es water column draft.

F. A Barometric Draft Regulator

May be used and set at .06 to .10inches water column.

Safety and Service Clearances -Regardless if you use your stove as aseparate independent stove installa-tion or in the parallel configurationwith another furnace, the followingsteps will apply in your decision asto where and how you will installyour new solid fuel stove.

Clearance to CombustiblesModels SF-150, SF-250

Safe stove clearance to combustiblewalls is 24" to rear and 36" to sidesand front. Floor protection for acombustible floor should consist of3/8" asbestos millboard or a stovemat providing equal protection. Thefloor protector should extend 8" toeither side and 16" in front of thestove. Floor protection should alsoextend 2" to either side of chimneyconnector.

Leveling Adjustable Feet

A. Lean the stove back and screwon the two front feet.

B. Lean the stove front and screwon the two rear feet.

C. Make final adjustments to bringthe stove into a level position byadjusting feet as required.

Most Harman stoves are equippedwith adjustable feet which areadjusted simply by turning them.They are 4" in diameter to supportthe stove without marring the floor.The shape of the foot adds to theappearance and quality of the stove.

I M P O RTANT! THE FLUE PIPEMUST BE 24 GAUGE OR THICK-ER.

When connecting the flue pipe tothe stove the first section of the pipe

or the elbow should be installedinside the flue connector on thestove. It should be held in place bydrilling three holes through thepipe. The holes should be of suit-able diameter for the sheet metalscrews or pop rivets used for fasten-ing.

A straight section of pipe or anelbow must now be installed.

A barometric damper may beinstalled on this vertical section ofthe pipe. Use a listed barometricdamper.

IMPORTANT! ALL HORIZONTALRUNS SHOULD HAVE A 1/4"RISE TO THE FOOT SO THATANY LIQUID CREOSOTE THATMAY DEVELOP WILL RUN BACKINTO THE STOVE.

Connector thru Walls and Chimney- NFPA 211 does not permit achimney connector to pass throughany floor or ceiling or through anyfire wall or fire partition. However,where necessary, a connector maypass through a partition other than

a fire partition under any of the fol-lowing conditions:

A. Where a ventilated type metalthimble, as shown above is used.Such a thimble must be at least 12inches larger in diameter than thechimney connector.B. Where a metal or burned fire-clay thimble is used and the thimbleis surrounded on all sides by not less

than 8 inches of brickwork or equiv-alent fireproofing material.

C. Where all combustible materialis cut out of the partition wall for asufficient distance to provide notless than 18 inches clearance on allsides of the connector. Any materialused to close this opening must benon-combustible insulating material.

D. Where the section of connectorpipe passing through the wall isreplaced by a properly installed sec-tion of factory-built chimney, thechimney section must be listed forsolid fuel use and be insulated.

Where an existing chimney is used,it must be large enough to provide adraft adequate for exhausting thegaseous products of combustion.The cross-sectional area of thechimney flue should be at least 25percent greater than that of thechimney connector (stovepipe). Forexample, the common 8 inch by 8inch chimney flue liner has an actu-al interior cross-sectional area ofonly 49 square inches (7" x 7") and,thus, can only accommodate a 7"stove connector.

Cleaning The chimney, Smoke Pipeand Spiral Chamber.

Avoid chimney fires. On a regularschedule, check for creosote andsoot buildup in the chimney, smokepipe and spiral chamber. They mustbe kept clean. Keep a professionalchimney sweep in mind if you haveaccess to one.

Steel brushes are the safest forcleaning metal surfaces. Salt solu-tions and some chemicals may dam-age metal surfaces. Do not overfireyour stove. Do not burn anythingthat combusts in seconds. Excessive

flue temperatures may result there-by igniting creosote.

To clean the chimney, obtain a stiffbrush with an extendible handle andinsert the brush into the chimneyfrom the top. Continue the brushingand sweeping downward until thee n t i re length of the chimney iscleaned.

After cleaning the chimney, thedebris will be at the bottom of thechimney at the clean-out opening.Open the clean-out door and sweepthe debris out into a metal contain-er.

The smoke pipe from the stove tothe chimney can be cleaned with asteel brush.

Cleaning of Spiral Chamber - Toclean spiral chamber re m o v ecleanout plate in front of chamberby using a 3/4" wrench to turn thebolt counter-clockwise two turn sand slide plate sideways about 1"and remove. Take putty knife orsimilar tool and scrape accumulatedresidue from the spiral chamber.The residue will fall down to the bot-tom of the chamber and can beremoved from the flue opening inback of the stove by means of a vac-uum cleaner or a small scoop.

Two methods of connect-ing a chimney connectorto a chimney flue wherethe connector must passthrough a combustible par-tition wall. Instead of theasbestos board shown,sheet metal may be used,or a metal lath and plasterfinish may be applied atthat area. Use 24 gauge orheavier metal. Clearanceneeded is three times thediameter of stovepie.

One-eighth to 1/4" accumulationon interior parts is normal. Themost important area is between thepipes indicated by the arrow inFigure 6. Under normal operation itis not necessary to clean the cham-b e r. Excessive accumulation willonly occur when wood is burnedvery slowly for long periods of time.If this is the case, we recommendyou clean the chamber and burn thestove hotter. If the extra heat fromthe hotter fire is too much for yourhome, switching to coal, in thewarmer months may be the answer.We recommend you check yourinterior spiral chamber once a year.

11.1 Starting a Wood Fire

Take about eight sheets of newspa-per, crumble up into balls and placeon top of grates on dual fuel modelsand on the firebrick in the woodmodels. Next, lay some fine kindlingon top of the paper. This kindlingmust be dry and no larger than 3/4"diameter and should be layered in acriss-cross pattern to allow good airflow. Then, lay some slightly largerpieces (2" diameter) of wood on topof the kindling. Open draft controlsfully and light the paper at the bot-tom just inside the door. Now, closeloading door (also ash removal dooron dual-fuel models) and allow kin-dling and wood to catch fire. Afterabout five minutes, open loadingdoor an inch or two for a few sec-onds before opening completely.This method will allow the smoke toclear away from the door opening.Now the fire should be well-estab-lished and ready for some largerwood. Add four or five pieces of 3"to 4" diameter wood. Close doorand let burn for about 5-10 minutes.Now open loading door using thesame method as before and loadstove with wood to the desired full-ness. All Harman wood and dual fuelstoves may be loaded with wood as

full as possible for high output andlong burn time. Then close the doorand allow all the wood to catch fire .After all the wood is burning well,you may reduce the air entering thef i rebox by turning the draft contro l sc l o c k w i s e .

Close and open the draft controlsone at a time to the desired setting.This setting should normally bebetween one and two turns. Lessthan one turn will cause excessivecreosote buildup and over two turnsmay cause excessive heat.

NOTE: EACH STEP IN THISPROCESS WILL TAKE LONGERIF YOUR WOOD IS DAMP ORWET AND WILL INCREASESMOKE. Normally the bottom draftcontrol is kept closed to burn wood.

11.2 Starting a Coal Fire

Start a fire using the same proce-dure as for wood.

Add small, compact pieces of hard-wood when the kindling is burninghot. Keep the draft controls fullyopen to establish a hot fire quickly.The ash door also may be openedduring start-up to accelerate the ini-tial burn.

When a substantial bed of red woodcoals are built up, start adding coal(pea or nut is preferred to stove coalfor starting) small amounts at a time.Keep the draft control open.

Continue adding small amounts ofcoal until there is a solid bed ofburning coal. Do not add too muchat one time. Allow sufficient timebetween each small loading (at least5-10 minutes), so that each loadinghas time to ignite thoroughly beforethe next load is put in. When a sub-stantial bed of burning coals hasbeen established, fill the stove to thetop of the firebrick. A deep bed ofcoal always will burn more satisfac-torily than a shallow bed.

When most of the wood is burnedand the coal is completely ignited(usually 5-10 minutes or less afterfilling the stove), the draft controlshould be turned down to the prop-er operating level. (If the ash doorhas been opened, it must be closedto prevent overfiring, which cancause dangerously high tempera-tures.)

11.3 Loading

Coal should never be added unlessthere is a reasonable hot fire. Thecoal bed should be bright and vigor-ous.

If the fire is burning hot and there isa deep bed of coals, full loads ofcoal can be added at any time.However, if there is not a deep bedof coals, it is best to add smallamounts of coal at first.

11.4 Increasing Heat From a Low Fire

Every effort should be made not tolet a coal fire burn too long so that

the fire has started to die. This willcause the reloading process to bemuch longer, and there is a goodpossibility of losing the fire.

Do not shake or stir with a low fire.

Open the draft control wide or openthe ash cleanout door to get themaximum draft.

Run the stove with the draft controlor ash door fully open until the fireis reasonably hot.

Start adding small amounts of coal.Follow the same procedure as inparagraphs 3 and 4 in Section 11.2

When the new coal is thoroughlyignited or there is a substantial bedof hot coals, the stove may be shak-en thoroughly. Be sure to shakedown all ashes (but do not over-shake).

After shaking, keep the bottomdraft control open until you are surethe fire is continuing to burn hot,then turn the draft control down tothe proper operating level. IF THEASH DOOR HAS BEEN OPENED,BE SURE TO SHUT IT (SERIOUSDAMAGE CAN RESULT IF THESTOVE IS RUN FOR EXTENDEDPERIODS WITH THE ASH DOOROPEN).

Count the exact number of turnsfrom full shut to the normal operat-ing positions so that you can adjustthe stove to the exact level of heatoutput and length of burn youdesire.

11.5 Shaking

Shaking should be done only whenthere is a hot fire.

The frequency of shaking willdepend on the type of stove and thedegree of burning. Shaking shouldbe done at least once a day, andpreferably twice a day.

Best results from shaking withHarman grates will occur if short“choppy” strokes are used ratherthan long, even strokes.

The amount of shaking is critical.Too little or too much, either canresult in the extinguishing of a firedue to blocked air flow. The properamount normally occurs when redcoals first start to drop through ontothe bed of ashes.

11.6 Draft Controls

The heat output of the coal is con-trolled by the primary draft controlon bottom door. Experience will dic-tate the proper settings for heatrequirements.

Coal responds very slowly tochanges in the draft settings.Because of this slow response time,over-correcting is a common prob-lem. When changes in heat outputa re needed, make only smallchanges in the draft setting and waitfor the temperature to stabilize.

11.7 Secondary Air

The two draft controls on the topdoor are used to allow secondary airto pass over the fire when burningcoal.

This adds oxygen to the unburnedgases (primarily methane and car-bon monoxide) and aides in burningthem. The setting for normal burn-ing is from 1/2 to 1 turn open fromclosed position. Adjust both controlsequally. NOTE: THESE SAMECONTROLS PROVIDE THE PRI-M A RY AIR WHEN BURNINGWOOD.

11.8 Ashes

Ashes should never be allowed toaccumulate in the ash pit so thatthey in any way impede the flow ofcombustion air to the fire. Excessash accumulation can cause the fireto go out and also can cause severedamage to the grates because of theabsence of a cooling flow of airbeneath them.

Ashes should be placed in a metalcontainer with a tight fitting lid. Theclosed container of ashes should be

placed on a noncombustible floor oron the ground, well away from allcombustible materials, pending finaldisposal. If the ashes are disposed ofby burial in soil or otherwise locallydispersed, they should be retained inthe closed container until all cindershave thoroughly cooled outside thedwelling.

CAUTION! ASHES SHOULDNEVER BE ALLOWED TO ACCU-MULATE ABOVE THE TOP OFTHE ASH PAN. ASHES IN CON-TACT WITH THE BOTTOM OFTHE GRATES ACT AS AN INSU-L ATOR, INTENSIFYING THEHEAT ON THE GRATES, ANDCOULD CAUSE THEIR WA R -PAGE. WITH AN EXCESSIVEASH BUILDUP, PRIMARY COM-BUSTION AIR IS RESTRICTED (INCOAL MODE); THUS, THEUNIT’S OUTPUT COULD BEREDUCED!

Coal produces considerably moreash than wood, so the intervalsbetween emptying are much short-er. For equal heat output, coal willproduce seven to ten times moreash than wood.

11.9 Safety

Whenever a loading door is opened,it always should be cracked slightlyto allow oxygen to enter and burnany combustion gases that are pres-ent before fully opening. Failure todo this could result in sudden igni-tion of the unburned gases when thedoor is opened.

A stove never should be filledwith excess coal so that the fluegas exit is blocked or impeded inany way. Burning coal generatescarbon monoxide. If the flue gasexit is blocked, the carbonmonoxide can be forced out ofthe stove into the room, withpossible f a t a l c o n s e q u e n c e s .WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THESTART-UP PERIOD, AN ASH PITDOOR SHOULD NEVER BE LEFTOPEN.

Serious damage to the stove canoccur from overheating.

Coal stoves should not be installedin any chimney that has had a his-tory of back-drafting or flow rever-sal. These conditions can causeimproper draft, resulting in carbonmonoxide entering the house ratherthan being drawn up the chimney.REMEMBER! COAL GASES ARETOXIC!

Sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide andother ions released from coal burn-ing may corrode stainless andmasonry chimneys, and even terracotta chimney liners and brick innearby buildings. Coal with high sul-fur content will destroy chimneysespecially fast if soot sits in the fluefor extended lengths of time. It isimportant to clean chimneys regu-larly.

PLUMBING DIAGRAM FOR THERMO-SIPHON METHOD - MAX. DISTANCE 10 FT.

COIL INSTALLATION (See Coil Diagram on Page 14)Place one of the nuts supplied on each leg of the coil. Place coil through the holes in the back of the firebox and adjust the nuts sothe pipes stick out about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches from the side of the stove. Put flat washers and nuts on the outside and tightenwithin 1/4 inch. Then place fiberglass rope around each pipe the washers and tighten. You are now ready to run pipes.

THERMO-SYPHON METHOD (LESS THAN 10 FEET)This is the simplest and most economical method, however, the hot water tank must be less than ten feet from the stove. The waterinlet, where the temp./press./relief valve is located, must be higher than the top leg of the coil. The hot water tank should be ele-vated, if necessary, to allow for proper thermo-siphon action (the method by which hot water will circulate automatically throughthe system.)a) Shut off the hot water heater and the old water supply to it. Drain the tank completely.b) Remove the temp./press./relief valve and discard. Install a short 3/4" nipple and tee (1) along with a new temp./press./relief

valve.c) Run 3/4" copper tubing along with the necessary fittings between the hot water tank and the top leg of the water coil. Install a

3/4" vent elbow and automatic “float type” air vent (2) in the high point of the line. Within two feet of the top leg of the water coil install a 150 lb. pressure relief valve. (7) Run 3/4" tubing from the release exit of both relief valves downward (3) so the hot water may escape the event of overheating.

d) Remove the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Install a short 3/4" nipple and tee and re-install the drain valve to the tee (4). Run 3/4" copper tubing with the necessary fittings between the drain/tee combination and the lower leg of the coil. After all of the connections have been complete, you may refill the tank. Turn on the hot water heater only after the tank has been com-pletely refilled.

PLUMBING DIAGRAM FOR CIRCULATING PUMP METHOD - MORE THAN 10 FT.

CIRCULATING PUMP METHOD (MORE THAN 10 FEET)This method is used when the hot water heater tank is more than ten feet away from the stove or the stove is on a higher level thanthe hot water heater tank. In addition to a circulator pump, you may want to add an aquastat to thermostatically control the pumpaccording to water temperature. This is optional and not necessary if the circulator pump is left run continuously. Another optionis a gate valve placed near the pump to control the rate of water flow.a) Shut off the hot water heater and the old water supply to it. Drain the tank completely.b) Remove the temp./press./relief valve and discard. Install a short 3/4" nipple and tee (1) along with a new temp./press./relief

valve.c) Remove the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Install a short 3/4" nipple and tee and re-install the drain valve to the tee (4). d) Install a circulating pump (6) as shown. Run 3/4" copper tubing from the circulating pump to the lower leg of the heat exchang-

er coil. This is where the optional gate valve (5) can be installed to regulate the water flow.e) Install a 3/4" tee and a 150 lbs. pressure relief valve (7) in the top leg within two feet of the top outlet of the water coil.f) Complete the 3/4" copper line by running it back to the tee at the top of the hot water tank, making sure to install a 3/4" vent

elbow and automatic air vent (2) at the high point of the line. The optional aquastat can be installed in this line a maximum of 6 feet from the furnace. This aquastat must be a close on temperature rise type and must be wired and adjusted to turn on the circulating pump when the water temperature reaches 120 degrees F.

The system is now ready to be refilled and the hot water heater turned back on.
