Chapter 1Working Environment

The Power System Simulator Advanced Distribution Engineering Productivity Tool (PSS/ADEPT)software was developed for engineers and technical personnel who design and/or analyze elec-trical distribution systems. Compatibility with PSS/U (Power System Simulator for Utilization) isprovided through raw data files and the Construction Dictionary.

1.1 Directory OrganizationThe PSS/ADEPT directory structure consists of a base directory and a varying number of subdirec-tories depending on the optional components or sections installed, and the installation type. Thebase ins ta l l a t i on d i rec to ry fo r a l l PSS/ADEPT ins ta l l a t i ons i s C:\ProgramFiles\PTI\PSS-ADEPT5. We recommends that you use this default location for any Local orWorkstation installations.

The PSS/ADEPT5 subdirectory structure always contains the DONGLE, EXAMPLE, RPT, andSOLOBUG directories. Do not delete or modify the DONGLE subdirectory. It contains files requiredto uninstall the application, as well as files that PTI customer support may need should youencounter any difficulties with your installation. The EXAMPLE directory contains PSS/ADEPTexample and dictionary files, and is set as the default location for these files. (Feel free to add to ormodify these files as needed.) The RPT directory contains PSS/ADEPT report files, used by theapplication to generate output reports. You should not delete or modify these reports, but you mayadd your own custom reports here.

Your Local, Server, or Workstation PSS/ADEPT installations may contain other subdirectoriesdepending upon the options included in your release. The following options may be included:

• Line Constants Calculator

• Protection and Coordination

• Reliability Analysis (DRA)

• Tie Open Point Optimization (TOPO)

• Capacitor Placement Optimization (CAPO)

• Harmonics

If your lease includes any of the options listed above, your serial number will be used to install theappropriate files. Additional subdirectories may be created as needed during the installationprocess.

1.2 Program Folders and ShortcutsFor all Local and Workstation installations, a PSS-ADEPT 5.0 folder is added to the Programs folderon the Start menu. The PSS-ADEPT 5.0 folder will contain shortcuts for each available PSS/ADEPTprogram. The PSS-ADEPT 5.0 program folder and shortcuts are not created during Serverinstallations.

1.3 Installing PSS/ADEPT for Other Users or Multiple UsersIf PSS/ADEPT is not installed by the person who will be using the product, the default Program Set-tings for the Working Directories and PSS/U Raw Data will not be set. These entries will need tobe set for each person who will be using PSS/ADEPT on the PC. Follow the steps below to set thesevalues manually:

1. Login as the person who will be using PSS/ADEPT.

2. Start PSS/ADEPT.

3. Click File>Program Settings.

4. Click the button next to the Input file directory field and select the desired directory, usually C:\Program Files\PTI\PSS-ADEPT5\EXAMPLE.

5. Repeat this procedure for the Construction Dictionary, Report File Directory, andImage File Directory entries. The default values for these entries are listed below:

Construction Dictionary C:\Program Files\PTI\PSS-ADEPT5\Example\pti.con

Report File Directory C:\Program Files\PTI\PSS-ADEPT5\Rpt\

Image File Directory C:\

6. Once you have completed your entries, click OK to close the Program Settings dialog.

Figure 1-1. Program Settings Dialog

1.4 Minimum System RequirementsTo install and run PSS/ADEPT, your computer system must meet the following requirements:

• IBM PC (or compatible) with a Pentium III or IV 1.6 Hz processor.

• 256 MB of RAM is recommended.

• 50 MB of hard disk space is required to install the program.

• Windows 2000, or Windows XP operating system.

• A parallel port or USB port for a hardware lock.

• SVGA (1024 × 768 or higher) color monitor; VGA monitors not recommended becausetheir resolutions severely limit readability and graphics operations. An AGP card ishighly recommended to make sure that graphic options operate at an acceptablespeed.

• Windows-compatible mouse pointing device.

1.5 Display ResolutionAlthough PSS/ADEPT can run at the lower range of display resolutions, the optimal Windows res-olution is 1024 × 768 small fonts. A lower resolution display will severely limit readability andgraphics operations.

1.6 PSS/ADEPT Program SectionsPSS/ADEPT is bundled with a number of program sections, or components, which vary from userto user. The base component for all installations is PSS/ADEPT. During the installation procedure, your serial number will install only those sections or components included with your lease ofPSS/ADEPT. Available program sections are:

• PSS/ADEPT

• Distribution Reliability Analysis (DRA)

• Harmonics

• Line Constants

• Protection and Coordination

• Capacitor Placement Optimization (CAPO)

• Tie Open Point Optimization (TOPO)

Chapter 2Installation

2.1 Important Installation Considerations Before You Begin

2.1.1 Determining Your Installation TypePSS/ADEPT may be installed in two different ways. You may select to install a standard, ’Local’,installation where all of the files required to run the application are installed to the hard drive on yourPC. Alternatively, you may select to install PSS/ADEPT as a shared application where the applica-tion ’Server’ contains the executable files residing on a mapped drive on your network, with’Workstation(s)’ on individual PC(s) connected to that network.

If you select to install a PSS/ADEPT Server with Workstation(s), the server drive must bemapped and accessible by the workstation PC(s) at all times for PSS/ADEPT to run.

2.2 Local InstallationYou must have administrative privileges on the target machine in order to install PSS/ADEPT.If you do not have the necessary privileges, the installation process will stop with a warning

message.

If autorun is enabled on your system insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive and the Initializationand Progress dialog will start automatically.

If autorun is disabled on your system, click Start>Run in the taskbar.

At the prompt, enter D:\PSS-ADEPT5\SETUP.EXE, where D: is the drive letter associated withyour CD-ROM drive, a networked CD-ROM drive, or copy of the installation CD (depending on yourparticular installation).
