PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

NOTE: All of the sessions mentioned below take place in Second Life. To joinSecond Life, you

need approx. 1h time, register and select an avatar, download 20 Mb of software and go

through a brief 20min training program on how to move and communicate in Second Life. It is

free. System requirements: a DSL internet connection and a PC with a good graphics card.

PANEL DISCUSSION of

UNIVERSITIES IN SECOND LIFE

This round table discussion starts with a tour at the University of Western Australia, which is one

of the star universities in Second Life with their innovative campus program and famous 3D artsexhibits by their students. UWA is shortlisted for a Linden prize because of their outstanding

innovative ways of using Second Life. It is a combination of real life reproductions of the

University building and the famous Sunken Garden, a place in Australia famous for the many RL

weddings taking place. By reproducing these gardens in Second Life, UWA hopes to bridge the

gap from what Australians are familiar with already to the postmodern look and feel of Second

Life art and science displays on the virtual ground. After the 30min tour, we will meet on

AVALON Learning island for the panel discussion.

VIRTUAL ATHENS IN SECOND LIFE

This city presentation includes a visit to the Acropolis which is followed by a city tour by train

(20min) and a presentation by the chair [xris Oller] in the main city hall, the Athens Academy

(20min). It is then followed by a round table discussions with those who live and work in virtual

Athens: tenants, shop owners, the priest of the local church, restaurant owners, bar tender,

This city presentation includes a city tour by oldtimer automobile and bus (20min) and a

presentation by the creator Jo Yardley in the main city hall, the museum (20min). It is then

followed by a round table discussions with those who live and work in virtual Berlin: tenants,

shop owners, the priest of the local church, a journalist of the local newspaper, bar tender, taxi

Virtual Harlem is a representation of a portion of Harlem, NY as it existed during

the 1920s Jazz Age and Harlem Renaissance. This project, Virtual Harlem, was

one of the earliest full virtual reality environments created for use in the

humanities and certainly one of the first for use in an African American literature

course. Virtual Harlem has been presented at venues in Paris, The Netherlands,Sweden, Hungary, and multiple sites in the US. In 2004, the University of Paris

IV-Sorbonne, funded the development of Virtual Montmartre and Dr. Carter was

asked to be the project leader and was awarded the prestigious "Professeur

Invite" from the Sorbonne to spend 6 months in Paris. This project realized itself

in the development of an interactive Web Site and a small 3D representation of

the Lapin Agile, the oldest surviving cabaret in Montmartre which is still in

operation. The evolution of Virtual Harlem was funded in 2006 by the National

Black Programming Consortium and the Government of Norway with the

development of Virtual Harlem and Virtual Montmartre in Second Life. Thesesites were two of the most important locations during the Jazz Age/Harlem

How sustainable is this urban second life?

In a world without borders, without time and space, where are the opportunities and

where is danger?

What kind of role do virtual worlds play for the preservation of culture?

How do we overcome the last of all barriers, the language barrier?

We are looking for representatives of lively and active cities in Second Life with an

infrastructure, an economy and a socially active community to present your towns.

We are also inviting universities in Second Life who are involved in the research and

development of fostering a knowledge society in these 3D urban and universitarian

environments.

We are also interested in individuals, trainers and knowledge workers who live and work in

Second Life.

Furthermore we invite those interested in organising round table discussions with experts and

representatives of trades and perhaps of country wide initiatives.

The virtual and real INST-World Conference Cities, Cultures, Knowledge Societies

(Short: CCKS-Conference) from 25th to 28.11.2010 is the 8th such world project

since the first INST World Forum in the UNESCO-Center in Paris in 1999.

The special feature of the CCKS-Conference is not only the expected number of participants

(about 1 million from about 180 countries), but above all the virtuality in a new quality,in the questions, the new forms of cooperation, the formation of synergies and a

polylogue with a scientific orientation of actions.

Special guest of this UNESCO sponsored event will be President Barack Obama.

May we repeat the words of cautions which the conference organiser Mr. Arlt expressed that

although the White House has confirmed Barack Obamas attendance, it may or may not

actually happen.

In the eventuality however that he joins, there is a chance of him observing Second Life

activities which we will be beaming on a large screen at the conference site.

In the eventuality that he might not be able to travel to Vienna, there is a likely hood of him

joining in-world, who knows.

Whatever the case may be, the discussions will be streamed in Adobe ConnectPro and

recorded at the same time.

With the kind sponsorship of the University of Kalmar in Sweden, these discussions are being

documented in the conference typical academic fashion in order for to be published in the INST

journal which is said to have a readership of 100 000 mostly scientists around the world.

The current form of the INST Conferences was developed since the 80s (it is older than the

INST, which was founded on the 14.11.1994). The form of the sections goes back to the

conferences at the University of California at Riverside, where Professor Donald G. Daviau

arranged for conference about Austrian literature every year. His form of conference

organization used an open structure which allowed to organize large conference with nearly no

budget.

Todays sections (working groups) are based on the idea that researchers, artists and

knowledge producers organize a discourse about a topic as individuals or as small group and

then document it.

As far as the time available to contributions there were a number of different approaches. In

general the guideline is: 20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes discussion. If wished by the

section leader, however, other arrangements can be accommodated. There were sections with

10 minutes presentations and others with 50 minutes presentations and 10 minutes discussion.

The section leaders are free to choose their own model and announce it accordingly.

The length of the presentation has no influence on the length of the published contribution.

Bryan Carter [Bryan Mnemonic]

Bryan Carter is an Associate Professor of literature at the University of Central

Missouri. He specializes in African American literature of the 20th Century with a

primary focus on the Harlem Renaissance and has a secondary emphasis on

visual culture. He has published numerous articles on his doctoral project, Virtual

Harlem and has presented it at locations around the world. In addition to these

activities, Dr. Carter is very active with faculty development both locally,

nationally and internationally. He regularly conducts workshops for faculty at

Central on Digital Humanities through the Center for Teaching and Learning aswell as specialized topics such as "Generational Learning Styles", "Podcasting",

"Blogging", and Second Life. He has done summer workshops for the National

Council for Teachers of English on Digital Humanities, led a workshop session

for the Digital Africana Studies Conference at the University of Maryland-College

Park, conducted a 3-day workshop on Technology in the Classroom at Alabama

A&M, and at international venues such as Vaxjo University in Sweden on Digital

invited to venues around the world to offer keynote addresses or to serve on

David Richardson [Davric Rinkitink]

David Richardson is a Junior Lecturer in English at Linnaeus University, based in Kalmar in

south-eastern Sweden. He has been teaching English for over thirty years, twenty of which have

been spent teaching at Swedish universities, but he has also taught in countries as diverse as

Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Angola and Trinidad and Tobago.

David has been using ICT to deliver courses since 1981 and he currently uses technologies and

programs such as Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro, Moodle and Second Life on active courses. He

was a member of the original Kamimo Islands Project in 2007 (a Norwegian-financed project

Edith Paillat is a Language Technology Specialist at Victoria University of Wellington. She is

responsible for the maintenance of three computer language labs in our language learning

centre and support the teaching and learning of 12 languages, including maori, samoan and NZ

sign language. She provides CALL solutions and computer training sessions for in-servicelanguage lecturers and teaches a short introductory CALL course to pre-service teachers at

secondary level. Before that she taught French FL for over 10 years in several countries, her
