services available to them.
This newsletter is here to help you find the
places you can enjoy, community groups
and charities that you can volunteer with,
and the services that can help you.

and healthy, learn new skills, find work or
generally make your life better, there are
plenty of people out there to help.
Please take a look inside to find out more
about your estate, and how you can get
involved in this great community.

GFM Local Radio for Greatfield
Greatfield residents hit the airwaves on 87.7FM
GFM local radio for Greatfield is a community radio project in-volving people living and work-ing in the Greatfield area. Locally produced programmes will be made and some released as podcast episodes before the station launches.
Between 19th - 25th August, the project will "go live" and broad-cast 24 hours a day, on 87.7FM for 7 days from a site on Greatfield. It is a chance for everyone to work together to celebrate life on Greatfield and promote positive change in the area. The people involved have re-cently completed a training course "GFM - An Introduction to Community Radio" and are now ready to make programmes
about issues that are important in the area. The radio station will also feature music shows that are an alternative to those found on other radio stations. The project is managed by Cascade, a group of local artists and edu-cators and is a partnership between local residents, faith groups, youth centres, primary and secondary schools and other agencies working in the local area. It is funded by the BIG Lottery and takes place at the St Stephens Neighbourhood Centre on the estate.
As a part of the project a group of students from Stockwell Pri-mary School will soon visit Hull KR and P&O Ferries in order to interview staff members from
various depart-ments. If anyone living or working in the Greatfield area would like to take part, either by offering sugges-tions, helping to making a pro-gramme, presenting live or working be-
hind the scenes, please contact Claire at Cascade on tel. 213447 or email [email protected] To listen to the latest podcast visit the Cascade website at www.cascadearts.org.uk
"This will be a great op-
portunity for residents of
all ages to work together
and experience what it's
like to work as a team to
achieve their goals.“

You could be one of the Star People... If becoming a famous DJ for the week isn’t for you, there is other ways of becoming a Star in your neighbourhood. UnLtd are a charitable company that provides awards of funding to and support to individuals that use their talents and poten-tial to help their community. They want to meet people who can transform the community in which they live. These community entrepreneurs can meet with a representative from UnLtd to tell them about a business idea. They will help you with the idea and if it meets the needs of the community, they may be able to give you money to get started. There are three levels of award that you can
apply for: Try It, Do It, & Build It Try It These awards can offer you up to £500 to try out your ideas to improve your local area. The award allows people to progress at their own pace, with the right support to develop the business skills they will require to take on larger projects in the future. Do It The average award is £2,500 at the Do It level, but you can apply for up to a maximum of £5,000. Those people who completed a ‘Try It’ award successfully may be confident enough to move up to this level. You will have tested your idea and can now develop it to reach more people or build your community business. If you haven’t done a Try It award, but
you already feel you have the skills and planning to develop a project, you could apply for a Do It award straight away. Build It If you already run an established social business or community project, the Build It award can offer you up to £15,000 to help your project grow much more. A Build It award will help you to develop over the long term, and to reach the whole area around you.
UnLtd are a national charity, but the only place they are offering awards in Hull, is to residents of Greatfield. They are working alongside the Big Local Trust on the estate to help people to make it a better place to live. Applying for funding can be a daunting prospect, but please don’t be put off by the thought of having to fill in application forms. They really want you to succeed, and will help you with your idea. You may have an interest in arts & crafts, DIY and gardening, you may be a good dancer and want to run a com-munity dance class! All ideas are welcome!
For more information on how to apply, please contact Sue Foster
on 07841 205857 or email [email protected]
Sue is the UnLtd representative for the Greatfield area.
Bilton Grange Community Asso-ciation has obtained funding to develop a project celebrating all the things that have made Greatfield Estate a wonderful place to live. Mark Buttle works at the centre and is overseeing the project. He would like anyone and everyone to come forward with photos, stories and artefacts to help him build the Greatfield archive. The archive will represent life on the estate from its birth, right up to the present day.
A local fundraising legend is
raising money to take local
schoolchildren on a learning and
development tour of Australia
next year.
Tony Elvin, a teaching assistant
at the Archbishop Sentamu
Academy has a long history of
fundraising and developing local
amateur rugby league clubs,
youth rugby teams, and at Hull
Kingston Rovers too.
Tony successfully raised funds to
take 4 young men to Australia in
2011 for a six week scholarship
course. The course was very well
received by the kids and made a
big difference to their lives.
Building on that good work last
year, Tony started fundraising
again in January 2012, with the
aim of raising £60,000 to take
17 young people aged 14-16 on
an educational tour of Australia
in June/July 2013.
The tour is a joint venture with a
number of children from Kelvin
Hall School in west Hull joining
A Greatfield Life is full of great memories Many people have already come forward and contributed items to be photographed, such as old tin baths, school exercise books, Rediffusion TV books and more! Any artefacts are returned to their owners after their photo shoot. People are welcome to come to tell their stories about growing up in Greatfield, and Mark will record them as they take a trip down Memory Lane. Tales about buildings, school, love, families, socialising and culture are great news for the project.
Volunteers are welcomed if you would like to do any interview-ing as well as being interviewed, and training will be given to help you master the equipment. A website has been developed by Mark at the address shown below, so please pay a visit and see what events are coming up. The project is building up to an exhibition event in November and the date will be confirmed soon.
Another exciting part of the project is that Greatfield will have its own song! Route 66, the BGCA house band will produce a song based on all of the stories and information provided by all of the contributions. The band would also like the Greatfield residents to sing the chorus of the song, which they will record and make it a memento of the estate that will last forever. You could be a part of it! To find out more, and play a part in the Greatfield Life project, please call or email the team soon.

A trip down under for Archie’s kids
them. Kelvin are fundraising for
their children separately as both
schools look to secure £30,000
each. £14,607 has been raised
so far by Tony and the Sentamu
children. Tony wishes to person-
ally thank all contributors and a
said a special thank you goes to
the proprietors and customers
of The Falcon and The Grange
public houses for their amazing
generosity.
Fourteen young men, seven of
which are from Greatfield Estate
will tour the country, playing
rugby against some local schools
and meeting people of similar
ages from down under over a
period of 21 days. The tour will
benefit their education, their
health and confidence. It will be
the experience of a lifetime.
Three young ladies will fly out at
the same time for a 28 day peri-
od working as football mentors
to local children in schools who
are younger than them. They
will each live with an Australian
family for 7 days to learn about
their way of life as well.
The eldest three years of the
school were given the chance to
express an interest in the tour,
and a number of people with an
interest in rugby, football and
travel took the opportunity.
This is an excellent cause, and it
is having positive effects on the
attitudes towards schooling. The
children must enter into an
agreement where they will
make every effort to maintain
excellent achievements in work
towards their exams, behaviour
and attendance in order to qual-
ify for the trip. The agreements
have seen good improvements
in every aspect so far.
The children will raise funds for
their own plane tickets (which
will cost around £1,000 each) by
conducting their own sponsored
events. The funds raised by Tony
and the Sentamu team will pay
for the kits used on the tour and
the general running costs of the
trip. When the tour is over, the
kits will be donated to a school
for disadvantaged people in
South Africa.
Tony’s long term ambition for
this project, is for it to become a
yearly exchange programme
for children of both countries to
learn about culture and sport.
For more information about the
project, please contact Tony on

excess energy the kids have
during the school holidays?
There’s plenty of places where
you and the kids can enjoy a bit
of outdoor activity.
If you’re interested in a gym
workout, playing a bit of table
tennis, a game of basketball,
climbing a Gladiators style wall,
or playing on the swings and
slides, it’s all here on Greatfield
Estate!
Now a new pathway is being built to

The outdoor gym was something
of a hidden gem until recently. It
was tucked away behind the
Elizabethan Hall before the old
school building was demolished.
Now a new pathway is being
built to make it easier for people
to get to it. You will soon be able
to walk in from Annandale Road.
The Falkland Road park is situat-
ed near the bus turning circle at
the end of the road.
The Stonebridge park is located
on Stonebridge Field. You can
get to it just off the Avenue. It
has a skate park, a basketball
and football pitch, and plenty of
swings, slides and things to
climb on!
No need to call, just drop by and
enjoy.

St Stephens Neighbourhood Centre delivers basic computer courses in conjunction with UK Online Centres – this enables the learner to gain a certificate in Basic Computer Skills and from there can develop onto more training. Recently, a group of learners were asked to be involved with the cabinet office and UK Online centre, hoping to promote these basic skills. The learners were interviewed and photographed; both at the centre and in their own homes and they received a monetary reward for their time.
During the run up to the Olym-pics, SSNC was involved with the UK Online mascot touring around the country and visiting as many centres as it could. For more information on the courses available at SSNC, call Tina Parry on 01482 781223 or email [email protected] As well as the training courses, SSNC has two Outreach Youth Workers on the team; they are there to help young people (13-18yrs) in the community, to enable them to face the chal-lenges of today’s modern world.
Support for families A Personalisation Co-ordinator; for vulnerable people in need of support and advice will help you with any problems you may have. These can include help with money matters, health, community care services or any area of family support. Greatfield Friends and Families is a project that SSNC has now facilitated for 7 years. The aim of the project is to help adults with learning disabilities and their families, who live in the surrounding areas of the estate
to be part of the local communi-ty and to enable them to organ-ise new activities for them-selves. The centre will also be hosting the GFM local community radio station in August 2012, including the launch party on the 19th at 3:00pm. If you’d like to know more about the centre and its projects, give them a call. The centre manager is Rachel Appleyard, who can be reached at [email protected] or by calling 01482 781223.
